5-0 out of 5 stars A Heart and Life As Big As All Outdoors
Helen Hunt Jackson still has a fan club, apparently, presumably mainly amongst fans of the authentic Old West and people interested in Native American affairs. At least, you can Google your way to places where you can buy Helen Hunt Jackson teeshirts and such. Other than that, Jackson seems mainly remembered today for her friendship with Emily Dickinson, being by birth a New Englander, born just around the corner from Emily D's Amherst Mass home, and in the same year.

Having originally taken to the Western climate for her health, Jackson came late in life to discover, and advocate for, in her writings, the plight of the Native Americans. She was, however, no mere noissome agitator for social justice, but a remarkably gifted, well-tempered writer, seen in top form in many of the short works of which this slim book is comprised, as charmingly authentic in its Western descriptive narration and feel as a collection of Frederic Remington paintings; a lost American treasure, in effect, pregnant with all the delights of rediscovery.

Product Description
About this very sheep-shearing there had been, between her and the head shepherd, Juan Canito, called Juan Can for short, and to distinguish him from Juan Jose, the upper herdsman of the cattle, some discussions which would have been hot and angry ones in any other hands than the Senora's.

Juan Canito wanted the shearing to begin, even though Senor Felipe were ill in bed, and though that lazy shepherd Luigo had not yet got back with the flock that had been driven up the coast for pasture. "There were plenty of sheep on the place to begin with," he said one morning,-- "at least a thousand;" and by the time they were done, Luigo would surely be back with the rest; and as for Senor Felipe's being in bed, had not he, Juan Canito, stood at the packing-bag, and handled the wool, when Senor Felipe was a boy? Why could he not do it again? The Senora did not realize how time was going; there would be no shearers to be hired presently, since the Senora was determined to have none but Indians. Of course, if she would employ Mexicans, as all the other ranches in the valley did, it would be different; but she was resolved upon having Indians,-- "God knows why," he interpolated surlily, under his breath.

"I do not quite understand you, Juan," interrupted Senora Moreno at the precise instant the last syllable of this disrespectful ejaculation had escaped Juan's lips; "speak a little louder. I fear I am growing deaf in my old age."

What gentle, suave, courteous tones! and the calm dark eyes rested on Juan Canito with a look to the fathoming of which he was as unequal as one of his own sheep would have been. He could not have told why he instantly and involuntarily said, "Beg your pardon, Senora."

"Oh, you need not ask my pardon, Juan," the Senora replied with exquisite gentleness; "it is not you who are to blame, if I am deaf. I have fancied for a year I did not hear quite as well as I once did. But about the Indians, Juan; did not Senor Felipe tell you that he had positively engaged the same band of shearers we had last autumn, Alessandro's band from Temecula? They will wait until we are ready for them. Senor Felipe will send a messenger for them. He thinks them the best shearers in the country. He will be well enough in a week or two, he thinks, and the poor sheep must bear their loads a few days longer. Are they looking well, do you think, Juan? Will the crop be a good one? General Moreno used to say that you could reckon up the wool-crop to a pound, while it was on the sheep's backs."

4-0 out of 5 stars A Colorado Story
This book facinates me. The author Helen Hunt Jackson was a close neighbor to our Iles ancestors who came to Colorado in 1871, living in Manitou & Colorado Springs. Family stories handed down have told us they knew Helen Hunt Jackson and they even named a mine up in Cripple Creek after her other book "Ramona." This books describes our ancestors coming to Colorado in detail, only the names have been changed. Did Helen get her story from them? We'll never know for sure. This is a great childrens book, and is a great book to read if you want to know what it was like coming to the Pike's Peak region in the 1870s. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars captivating, astute and indespensible
In "Century of Dishonor" author Helen jackson has written an indepth and scholarly account of the US government's policy of instiutionalized "Indian" extermination. Jackson's account of theinfamous "Trail of Tears" in which 17,000 Cherokees were forciblyremoved from their homes and driven at bayonet point to Oklahoma by the USArmy,an unspeakable atrocity in which only half the Cherokee populationsurvived. In her summation of the treatment accorded to the Cherokees,Helen Jackson writes that "In the whole history of our Government'sdealing with the Indian tribes, there is no record so black as the recordof perfidy to this nation. There will come a time in the remote futurewhen, to the student of American history, it will seem well-nighincredible."

"Century of Dishonor" remains essentialreading for those who wonder where Hitler obtained the background materialon concentration camps and genocide: US government frontier policy. Acaptivating, astute and indespensible addition to American history.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most intriguing books of the 19C
Helen Hunt Jackson was the widowed wife of a succesful Pennsilvanian buisness man.She was acostomed to many trips to the frontier west, upon which she had many interactions with the local indians there. She was greatly distresed at their condition.Which led her to become an author. She once said that regalrdless of where you open the book on the american indian, there is not a year or page without a dark stain. This book was as influential on the people of her time as Harriet Beacher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin was on the people in antebellum america.Certainly a must read for all history enthusiasts ...
