Excerpt: The Isle of Man is mostly hilly with only one summit technically classified as a mountain (over 2000 Feet) which is Snaefell. The South of the Island features a small coastal plain around Castletown and Ballasalla but is otherwise hilly and on the South west cost these hills rise up to more prominent peaks such as South Barrule and Cronk ny Arrey Laa which drops almost vertically into the sea. A valley, known as the central valley separates the southern hills from the central range which contains the highest peaks. This central range contains 11 out of 12 of the Island's highest peaks. This area features open moorland and rough rugged terrain. It is very sparsely populated and has just one major road crossing it except along the coast. This then finally drops quite suddenly into a large flat northern plain which has only small rolling hills known as the Bride hills. The Isle of Man contains 5 Marilyns: The Isle of Man contains 12 peaks which stand at over 1500Ft. All of these except for South Barrule (which is found in the south) are found in the central range which spans the region between the central valley and the flat fertile northern plain. Despite the fact that none of these peaks are relatively high they appear quite prominent and impressive due to their proximity to the sea. Whilst many of these peaks are rugged in nature they are not steep enough to provide many opportunities for technical climbing (which can be found in abundance around the coast). There may be limited opportunities for scramblin...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=24019975 ... Read more

Product Description
It has been around since the first rear-impact automobile accident and it will continue to be a problem as long as humans have large, heavy heads perched on slender, highly mobile cervical spines. The subject is whiplash, and some of the brightest minds on the topic gathered in Banff, Alberta, Canada, for the Eighth International Symposium by the Physical Medicine Research Foundation. Editor Dr. Murray E. Allen, Chairman of the Symposium, has collected the findings in Musculoskeletal Pain Emanating From the Head and Neck: Current Concepts in Diagnosis, Management, and Cost Containment to help physicians, physical therapists, chiropractors, and researchers better understand “the new whiplash,” make reliable clinical assessments, and provide more effective treatment.

This thorough collection includes bump studies with human volunteers, research into safer automobile seat backs and head restraints, postmortem cervical spine examinations, reviews of the literature, and other investigations from around the world. Readers of Musculoskeletal Pain Emanating From the Head and Neck will learn specifically about:

  • injury mechanisms, threshold for injury, and impact severity
  • long-term outcomes of whiplash injury
  • psychological aspects of chronic pain and disability
  • dizziness, imbalance, and chronic incapacity
  • intervertebral joint injuries and cervical synovial joint injuries
  • the Neck Disability Index
  • manipulation and mobilization therapies
  • temporomandibular disorders/temporomandibular pain and dysfunction syndrome (TMPDS)

Musculoskeletal Pain Emanating From the Head and Neck is not simply a collection of studies presenting data and findings--rather, it is a compilation of knowledge that illuminates the challenges of treating whiplash and makes some strong and straightforward recommendations for improvement. The contributors and the editor stress to the reader that in order to provide the best possible care, providers must be alert to the many secondary manifestations of whiplash, test for the perception of dysfunction, and be reassuring whenever possible. They must foster an atmosphere of confidence, encourage very early activation, and help persons maintain the momentum of their lives. Furthermore, Dr. Allen calls for caregivers to stop most (if not all) drug treatments, avoid passive failure-mode treatments, and avoid prolonged medicalization of any form of treatment.

By studying the findings and following the recommendations of the international experts contributing to Musculoskeletal Pain Emanating From the Head and Neck, physicians, chiropractors, and physical therapists will foster self-reliance in their patients and improve diagnosis, treatment, and cost containment of whiplash.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Lowest of Lommell
Having treated numerous whiplash victims, and having observed the whiplash controversy from afar, I am continually amazed that some people will not only bring unfair criticism to books like this, but that they will use the opportunity to advertise themselves ("see more about me") so they can make even more money off the whiplash industry. I was rather pleased to buy Allen's book, as it adds fairness and balance to the controversy. I was somewhat surprised that he includes articles by Radanov, Bogduk and Croft, among others.

Interestingly, some people try to use this book to sell themselves to Plaintiff lawyers as hired gun able to deal with defensive 'experts' when they rely on, and vigorously defend Allen's article by using his own book to basically discredit his earlier article. Thanks to Freeman, Croft, Reiser et al's paper later in Spine, some Plaintiff experts have actually been able to reap huge financial rewards, and victimise patients and society at the same time, since they have been hired to serve Plaintiff lawyers and themselves only.

Again, Dr. Murray Allen has a balanced view of whiplash, just as the other international expert, Dr. Ferrari.

I wish that we could find a way to eliminate the 'money-seeking Plaintiff experts' from the academic and medicolegal pool. I get tired of haring the same arguments used for monetary gain and trying to make sure that expert testimony matches what the Plaintiff lawyer wants to hear. Fortunately, the vast majority of care givers do otherwise. I commend Dr. Allen for 'biting his tongue' and letting Dr. Croft have a voice where everyone else has stopped listening to the nonsense thereof. Now, if we just could get someone to wake up Lommell...

3-0 out of 5 stars Murray Allen - reformed 'expert'?
Having treated numerous whiplash victims, and having gone against numerous insurance companies, I am continually amazed at the defense's reliance on Dr. Allen's 'Pertubations' article from Spine.I was rather reluctant tobuy his book, but in fairness and balance, I didn't feel my library wouldbe complete without it.I was pleasantly surprised that he includesarticles by Radanov, Bogduk and Croft, among others.

Interestingly, I amnow able to use this book and the articles in it when I come up againstthese defensive 'experts' when they rely on, and vigorously defend Allen'sarticle by using his own book to basically discredit his earlier article. Thanks to Freeman, Croft, Reiser et al's paper later in Spine, combinedwith this book, I have actually been able to embarrass these guys, andprotect patients they have been hired to assail.

Again, Dr. MurrayAllen has a jaded view of whiplash, just as the other incompatent, Dr.Ferrari.In context, based on the source, one can use this book as atool.

I wish that we could find a way to eliminate the 'junk science'from the research pool.I get tired of having the same 10-15 articles usedagainst my patients trying to 'prove' they couldn't be hurt. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the evidence shows otherwise.Icommend Dr. Allen for 'biting his tongue' and including Dr. Croft after hewas discredited by same. Now, if we just could get someone to wake upFerrari...

1-0 out of 5 stars Perturbations of the Truth
Murray Allen brings to the textbook world more nonsense from his experience as pseudo-researcher.Anyone interested in the phenomenon of whiplash injuries should avoid this shallow book.

Allen wrote an articlefor the journal SPINE (1995) discussing accelerations in low-speedautomobile collisions and compared them to everyday benign activities suchas skipping rope and plopping into chairs. He postulated that injurieswere not possible and that injury cannot exist at lowspeeds.

Unfortunately for Dr. Allen, that article has been debunked inacademic circles in medicine and engineering. The article is an example ofwhat happens when you have medical editors reviewing articles aboutphysics:they haven't got a clue.

Allen failed to understand the physicsof whiplash by looking at the short bursts of acceleration caused byplopping into chairs and skipping rope.TWO factors must be present todetermine the injury potential in whiplash accidents:acceleration ANDdelta V.Plopping, etc. have accelerations APPROACHING those of whiplashat low speeds (still not quite as high, Dr. Allen), but THERE IS NO DELTAV.Car crashes happen over several HUNDRED milliseconds, and in spite ofAllen's use of language devised to confuse, his rope-skippng andchair-plopping delta V's are on the order of magnitude of only TENS ofmilliseconds. And that is a critical difference.

Allen also ignored thefact that vehicles weigh 2500 lbs. and more, that today's cars are HEAVIER(not lighter, as he implies) than the vintage World War II cars he talksabout (Severy et al. research).Since in PHYSICS, Force equals Mass timesAcceleration, or F = ma, Allen ignores the force of a 2500 lb. objecthitting you versus a 50-85 lb. child hitting a chair or the ground (incushioned sneakers no less). In addition, the epidemiological literatureon whiplash is massive.Does he really think that whiplash doesn't existat low speeds? Is the emergency room filled with rope-skippers andchair-ploppers?Are ALL of the people injured in collisions at low speedsfaking? Why is it that several outcome studies show long-term disabilityand chronic pain YEARS AFTER the lawsuits are settled?Epidemiology provesthat most injuries occur at speeds of 6-12 mph, whereas vehicle damagethresholds are higher.Doesn't Dr. Allenknow anything about the physicsof plastic (deformation and damage to vehicles) vs. elastic collisions(low-speed collisions where the damage from the energy of collision istransferred to the vehicle OCCUPANTS)?His "perturbations" studywas TOTALLY BOGUS, and certainly naive.

And that means that Allen is oneof two things:grossly undereducated in physics, biomechanics and themedicine of whiplash...or, perhaps was romancing the auto insuranceindustry who would love nothing more than to continue denying claims forreal injuries.Take your pick.He is NOT TO BE TRUSTED.

Further, Allenclaimed in that article that Severy found no injuries in his crash tests atUCLA in the 1950's.Did he even read Severy?A closer look at Dr. Allen'spast writings will reveal that he draws conclusions from his own studies onwhiplash he has no business drawing. That an article as weak as"Perturbations" could ever be published is a testament to journaleditors' need to SELL journals, and to sell controversy with JUNK SCIENCE. If Allen has ever gone to court as an expert witness and used his article,he should realize that many physicists, hard scientists, medicalprofessionals and whiplash victims are on to him.

I urge all whiplashsufferers to read the scientific literature on low-speed crash testing, especially works by Ono, Kanno, Panjabi, Brault, Siegmund, Croft, Freeman, and the many other real scientists who are telling the truth aboutwhiplash.Injuries start at rear-end collision speeds of 2.5 mph. Surprised? The truth is in the literature.

You will not find the truthin Allen's book.Is he a lacky-boy for the defense attorneys who representthe insurance industry, or the industry itself? Is greed at the heart ofsuch writing? One has to wonder.

I hope Dr. Allen reads this and changeshis ways, if he hasn't since that AWFUL 1995 article.Otherwise, he mightfind himself a patient with injuries sustained in a low-speed rear-endcollision with no one to empathize, and unable to sleep at night. In fact,I don't know how he can sleep now.

This book is no help to the millionsof innocent victims of car crashes. The ideas in this book about whiplashare truly superficial. This book and the one by Ferrari are misusing theliterature to fool people, and to help the auto insurance industry andtheir representatives. There is no reality here, just another perturbationof the truth. ... Product Description
Beyond the techniques and training, baseball is essentially a pitcher and a batter and the psychological battle between them-the head game. Here for the first time is the story of that battle and the people who changed the course of baseball by throwing one. Roger Kahn investigates not only grips, speeds, and tactics, but also knowledge, maturity, and competitive fire. With the help of some of baseball's greatest pitchers and pitching minds-from Christy Mathewson, Don Drysdale, Bob Gibson, and Bruce Sutter to today's reigning pitching coach, Leo Mazzone-as well as his own deep knowledge of the game, Roger Kahn speaks with authority, and with the authorities, bringing new light to baseball's most pivotal contest. His acute sense of how people make history makes The Head Game a delightful and enlightening tour of baseball through the pitcher's eyes.
Amazon.com Review
Inside the great expanse of a ballgame is the essential core of what Roger Kahn, one of the national pastime's most esteemed chroniclers, calls "chess at 90 miles per hour." That core, of course, is the duel between pitcher and hitter. At its best--which is where Kahn wants to play--it's as cerebral, complex, and psychological a contest as exists in sports, hence the title of this fascinating exploration of how baseball's basic confrontation, told from the pitcher's perspective, has evolved over time.

Drawing from his vast knowledge and long experience, Kahn parses the battle from every angle, dissecting the wizardry of hurlers both ancient--Candy Cummings, Hoss Radbourn, Cy Young, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson--and modern--Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax, Bruce Sutter, Tom Glavine. It is vintage Kahn--he manages to mix personal memoir with astute analysis. He examines tangibles, such as the height of the mound, and intangibles, such as the fear factor carried by every pitch, without ever taking his eye off the ball. And he's not above a few laughs and surprises. When he makes out his subjective list of the best pitchers of all time, he naturally includes Matty, Koufax, and Warren Spahn, but he also throws in a guy named Jerry Solovey. Jerry who? Kahn tells us he played in the low minors. So why's he here? "He could," Kahn admits, "almost always get me out." Like an able hurler, Kahn knows how to mix it up. He's got enough command as a writer to know how--and when--to bounce an occasional curveball or scroogie in the dirt for effect. --Jeff Silverman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of Kahn's Most Enjoyable & Knowledgable Baseball Books
Roger Kahn became famous for writing about "The Boys of Summer," but I think this was his most readable book about baseball.....kind of a treatise on pitchers and what makes them tick. He looks at great pitchers ranging all the way back to Christy Matthewson to modern-day men like Tom Glavine.

Kahn really opened my eyes to the achievemnts of longtime Braves hurler Warren Spahn.Anyone who knows baseball history knows Spahnie" was a great left-hander, but this good?Wow.

This isn't just a book about why some pitchers were/are so great but it's also a fascinating look at the history of the game and how it affected the guys on the mound.Best of all, this was a "quick read" and "fun read."

Recommended for baseball fans at all levels.who are curious just what goes on inside the heads of famous pitchers, and want to get a few laughs along the way.

3-0 out of 5 stars Barely rates as a quality start
You can hardly go wrong reading a baseball book written by Roger Kahn. But The Head Game: Baseball Seen from the Pitcher's Mound barely rates as a quality start (in keeping with pitching lingo).

Kahn divides his work into two sections--essentially pitching prior to World War I and pitching after World War II (the modern era). The book is equally divided, but it doesn't come alive until page 140 when Kahn starts to write about Warren Spahn.

In the first half, Kahn writes about Hoss Radbourn, Cy Young, Christy Mathewson. He uses these three pitchers to talk about the history of baseball and the evolution of pitching.I didn't find much about "the head game" in the first half of the book.In the chapter on Young, Kahn mainly discusses the 1903 World Series and memories of author John Tunis. He also dwells on the World Series efforts of Mathewson, particularly the 1905 series. In discussing the 1911 World Series and Mathewson's role in surrendering a crucial home run to Philadelphia A's Frank "Home Run" Baker, Kahn conveniently leaves out the fact that Matty had previously criticized his teammate Rube Marquard (not a gentlemanly thing to do) for surrendering a homer to Baker on a fast ball.Matty made the same mistake the next day.

The second half of the book is worthy of its title and of its author.Kahn discusses Warren Spahn, Johnny Sain, Don Drysdale, Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson, Bruce Sutter and pitching coach Leo Mazzone. There are plenty of insights in these pages.Johnny Sain is perhaps the most interesting pitcher in the book.

Kahn's observations on Koufax are interesting. He wrote, "From 1963 through 1966, Koufax one of the three or four best starting pitchers ever. But to call him the greatest pitcher is silly, and to call him without reservation a great athlete is iron-headed."

If you're a novice baseball fan, read the entire book.If you're a long-time baseball fan, start on page 140.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
A great read off the back of a sports journalist's life experience among both the baseball and sports writer's fraternity. Some great quotes and stories from hall-of-fame pitchers, and the pioneers of the modern game. Not just for those who like pitching, but a great book for all baseball fans who want to hear about spending a life studying the players and the game, and written by a well educated person who has spent his life writing about baseball without the ego of a player talking about himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable, Insightful, Superb
Roger Kahn has given fans another winner with this revealing look at pitchers and their mental approach to baseball.Readers learn about life on the hill from ancient masters like Christy Mathewson, mid-Century stars like Warren Spahn, and modern artists like Tom Glavine. Along the way we learn about different pitches, grips, exercise regimens, and mental strategies. We also learn about their long hours of practice, varying exercises to reduce strain on the arm, and experimentation with the baseball. As many fans know, not every hurler "pitches by the book."Greg Maddux, for example, usually goes after hitters on 0-2 rather than waste a pitch because at 0-2 most hitters are back on their heels. The author also interviews Johnny Sain and Leo Mazzone, two very capable pitching coaches.I wish Kahn had gone further and interviewed catchers (a vital part of the battery), less talented hurlers, and maybe even some hitters.Still, this is a superb baseball narrative, highly informative, and worthy of a five-star rating.

Readers might also enjoy some of this legendary baseball writer's other fine baseball books like THE BOYS OF SUMMER, MEMORIES OF SUMMER, etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Roger Kahn is an American Treasure...
Another homerun (although he would not like that analogy for this particular book) for Kahn.He is America's finest bard of baseball (some may disagree, but as Kahn would say, this is the writer's opinion). This is a fascinating look at pitching history through interviews (and historical documents) with the men who created it.From Ol' Hoss Radbourn (pitched over 600 innings and won 60 games in a season) to Christy Matthewson to Bob Gibson (who I wish had more than 10 or so pages) to Leo Mazzone, the book is wide in scope and stories. The book rambles a bit, but frankly the ride is worth taking. For anybody who loves the greatest of all games, this book will give you a new view of the men who make or break it.The pitchers. ...
