Excerpt:This article concerns the television program. For the television listings magazine, see Due South Magazine Due South Due South is a Canadian television police comedy-drama from the 1990s. It was created by Paul Haggis and produced by Alliance Communications. The show first aired in 1994, and ran until 1999. It followed the adventures of fictional Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer Constable Benton Fraser and his wolf companion, Diefenbaker, who find themselves living and working in Chicago . Fraser's methods, usually more sensitive and understanding than is typical for police work, gave the series a reputation for well rounded characters. Being overly polite, Fraser's probably best known short quotes were: 'thank you kindly'; when he found himself in trouble an understated 'oh dear'; and when faced with contradictory circumstances from other characters an all knowing and eloquently stated 'understood'. Another humorous angle of the show was that his sidekick, a wolf named Diefenbaker, though deaf, could read lips. History Due South originally debuted as a made for television movie aired on CTV in Canada and CBS in the United States . After higher than anticipated ratings, Due South was turned into a continuing drama series with its first season launching late in 1994. It was the first Canadian-made series to earn a prime time slot on a major US network. However, CBS moved its time slot continuously, and often preempted it with other programs, so maintaining an audience was a challenge. After the 24-episode first season, CBS cancelled the series. But due to the show's success in Canada and the ... ... Read more

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Angelo State University is a public, coeducational, doctoral level granting university located in San Angelo, Texas, United States. It was founded in 1928 as San Angelo College. It awarded its first baccalaureate degrees in 1967 and graduate degrees in 1969, the same year it took on its current name, Angelo State University. It offers over 100 undergraduate programs and 23 separate graduate programs. It is a member of the Texas Tech University System. As of 2009 enrollment stands at approximately 6,400 students with plans to increase to 10,000 by 2020. Angelo State was named one of "The Best 371 Colleges" and "Best in the West" by The Princeton Review in 2010. Angelo State University EntranceThe history of the university can be traced to 1928 when San Angelo College was established, following a municipal election held in 1926. Organized as part of the city school system, the two-year college for many years occupied a site on North Oakes Street near the commercial center of the city. The voters of Tom Green County in 1945 created a County Junior College District and elected the first board of trustees. In 1947, the first building was constructed on the present university site. The university has experienced a rapid transition from the status of a regional junior college to that of an accredited senior institution of higher learning. San Angelo College transformed into Angelo State College in 1965 by an act of the 58th Session of the Texas Legislature in 1963. The transfer of authority from the Board of Trustees of the junior college to the Board of Regents, State Senior Colleges, became effective on September 1, 1965. In May 1967, the first baccalaureate degrees were awarded. The name of the institution was changed to Angelo State University in May 1969. The graduate program was initiated in 1970 with the start of the university's College of Graduate Studies. During a major realignment ...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Excerpt: Exodus 1947 was a ship that carried Jewish emigrants, that left France on July 11, 1947, with the intent of taking its passengers to Mandate Palestine. Most of the emigrants were Holocaust survivor refugees, who had no legal immigration certificates to Palestine. Following wide media coverage, the British Royal Navy seized the ship, and deported all its passengers back to Europe. The ship was formerly the packet steamer SS President Warfield for the Baltimore Steam Packet Company, carrying passengers and freight between Norfolk, Virginia, and Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States, from the ship's launch in 1928 until 1942. During World War II, it served both the Royal Navy and the United States Navy; for the latter as USS President Warfield (IX-169). The ship was built in 1927 by Pusey and Jones Corp., Wilmington, Delaware, for the Baltimore Steam Packet Company. Initially named President Warfield, for Baltimore Steam Packet Company president S. Davies Warfield (the uncle of the Duchess of Windsor), it carried passengers and freight on the Chesapeake Bay between Baltimore, Maryland and Norfolk, Virginia from 1928 until July 12, 1942, when the ship was acquired by the War Shipping Administration (WSA) and converted to a transport craft for the British Ministry of War Transport Manned by a British merchant crew led by Capt. J. R. Williams, it departed St. Johns, Newfoundland on September 21, 1942, along with other small passenger steamers bound for the United Kingdom. Attacked by a German submarine 800 nautical miles (1,500 km) west of Ireland on September 25, the ship evaded one torpedo, and, after the scattering of its convoy, reached Belfast, Northern Ireland...http://booksllc.net/?id=2921836 ... Excerpt:Warren Steed Jeffs (born December 3, 1955 in San Francisco, California) was the president of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS Church) from 2002 to 2007. He may still be the Prophet of the FLDS Church, as no certain statements have been made that he stepped aside from this position after his conviction in 2007. While president and "Prophet, Seer and Revelator" of the organization, Jeffs wielded considerable religious as well as secular power, in line with the FLDS Church's theocratic principles. Jeffs gained international notoriety in May 2006 when he was placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution on Utah state charges related to his alleged arrangement of extralegal marriages between his adult male followers and underage girls. He was arrested in August 2006 in Nevada, and agreed to be taken to Utah for trial. In May and July 2007 the State of Arizona charged him with eight additional countsincluding sexual conduct with minors and incestin two separate cases. His trial, which began early in September 2007 in St. George, Utah, lasted less than a month, and on September 25 the verdict was read declaring him guilty of two counts of rape as an accomplice. On November 20, 2007 he was sentenced to imprisonment for 10 years to life and has begun serving his sentence at the Utah State Prison. Jeffs resigned from the presidency of the FLDS Church on the day he was sentenced. There are also reports that Jeffs admitted his position of prophet in the FLDS Church was a usurpation in a conversation to his brother, and declared that "Brother William E. Jessop has been the prophet since Father's passing", though Jeffs' ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=555604 ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is a mess.
This review probably comes too late, but I feel it's my duty to spell it out anyway.

Right from Chapter One, things go wrong. The book attempts to talk you through specific steps in creating basic shapes and animations in Flash using their downloaded files. Nice idea, but unfortunately, the starting downloaded file looked NOTHING like it was described in the book, so going through the following procedures was pretty useless. Right from the get-go I was frustrated and confused because the book was saying one thing, and I was looking at something altogether different. Beyond this, the steps themselves were confusing. I honestly don't think they took much care in making sure the steps were clear and understandable. Steps were repeated for no reason, menu items were mentioned without introduction or explanation, and there was no elaboration on the step given so that the whole thing was reduced to a simple "monkey-see, monkey-do" exercise. Unbelievable.

If you are brand new to Flash, steer well clear of this book. You will find no enlightenment in this disorganized, mess of a manual.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hard to read and hard to follow
If I ever opened this book in a bookstore, I will never buy this book home. The font they use in the book is san serif and size is small. It is a lot of work just by reading the words itself. and too many things they pointed it, and then move on... It's like you only surf the surface and not dive in. Anyway, I was very disappointed in this book and odd high review for this book. I think I will never buy any book from this series...

3-0 out of 5 stars Book is ok but watch for defective copies that are missing pages
I ordered this book at the end of September, 2008. I didn't get too far into the book, with work taking me in another direction. Now I'm back in Flash CS3 and needed the book again. I have discovered that I am missing a whole chunk of pages - 429 through 476. I have contacted the seller, StageCoach Books, and Amazon.com. Nobody will man up and resolve the problem for me. I have paid $28.00 including shipping for a DEFECTIVE COPY. StageCoach hasn't answered me at all - AbeBooks is the one that answered my email. They say to contact Amazon. Amazon says its too late for a claim. Great experience in passsing the buck. So, just wanted to warn others, when you order from StageCoach Books, please check the book right away - they seem to buy rejects and sell them as good products, and I don't care how long a time has passed - they should send me a replacement but won't. BE WARNED!

Other than that, the book seems ok but there are many times, when doing the exercises, that the ActionScript just doesn't work as it should. I've had to repeat exercises 3 or 4 times before it works. Could be me, maybe I'm entering the script wrong. It does have to be entered precisely. Not a bad book. I was a beginner when I got it. Seems that you will need a few other books and a lot of practice. Flash is not a simple application to learn. But, anything worth learning takes a lot of work on your part. I would have liked the book more if it had some color - its all black and white and does get a bit boring. As designers, we tend to respond more to color. This book is lacking in that area. For $21 + S&H, I would have expected a more polished production.

1-0 out of 5 stars Gobbly Goo
I've tried several Flash Books for beginners, and this is not it.Most designers are visual learners. This book is not for a visual learner.I labored diligently through the first few chapters.I was more confused then when I began.I wish I had not spent the money on this totally useless book.

I was very impressed overall with this product. It had an affordable price and came in really nice condition. Thanks! ... Read more

Product Description

In a work that synthesizes crucial developments in international relations at the close of the twentieth century, Bruce Cumings—a leading historian of contemporary East Asia—provides a nuanced understanding of how the United States has loomed over the modern history and culture of East Asia. By offering correctives to widely held yet largely inaccurate assessments of the affairs of this region, Parallax Visions shows how relations between the United States, Japan, Vietnam, North and South Korea, China, and Taiwan have been structured by their perceptions and misperceptions of each other.

Using information based on thirty years of research, Cumings offers a new perspective on a wide range of issues that originated with the cold war—with particular focus on the possibly inappropriate collaboration between universities, foundations, and intelligence agencies. Seeking to explode the presuppositions that Americans usually bring to the understanding of our relations with East Asia, the study ranges over much of the history of the twentieth century in East Asian–American relations—Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Korean War, and more recent difficulties in U.S. relations with China and Japan. Cumings also rebuts U.S. media coverage of North Korea’s nuclear diplomacy in the 1990s and examines how experiences of colonialism and postcolonialism have had varying effects on economic development in each of these countries. Positing that the central defining experience of twentieth-century East Asia has been its entanglement first with British and Japanese imperialism, and then with the United States, Cumings ends with a discussion of how the situation could change over the next century as the economic and political global clout of the United States declines.

Illuminating the sometimes self-deluded ideology of cold war America, Parallax Visions will engage historians, political scientists, and students and scholars of comparative politics and social theory, as well as readers interested in questions of modernity and the role of the United States in shaping the destinies of modernizing societies in Asia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Structured by Observations and Misperceptions of Each Other
Arguing that the central defining experience of 20th century East Asia has been its entanglement first with British and Japanese imperialism, and then with the US, Cumings ends Parallax Visions with a discussion of how the situation could change over the next century as the economic and political global influence of the United States declines. In a work that fuses and simplifies critical developments in international relations at the end of the twentieth century, Cumings gives us nuanced explanations of how the US has come into view vis-à-vis modern history and culture in East Asia.

By offering a new perspective as well as corrections to previously widely held yet largely inaccurate opinions of the goings on in this region, Parallax Visions shows how relations between the United States, Japan, Vietnam, North and South Korea, China, and Taiwan have been structured by their observations and misperceptions of each other. Using information based on thirty years of research, Cumings offers a new perspective on a wide range of issues that originated with the cold war. Cummings seeks to deconstruct the presuppositions that Americans traditionally bring to the understanding of our relations with East Asia including but not limited to Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Korean War, and more recent difficulties regarding US relations with China and Japan. Cumings also refutes US media coverage of North Korea's nuclear diplomacy in the 1990s and examines how experiences of colonialism and postcolonialism have had different impacts on economic development in each of these spaces. Bringing to presence the sometimes self-deluded ideology of cold war America, Parallax Visions engages in questions of modernity and the role of the US in (re)shaping the destinies of modernizing societies in Asia.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is mainstream
This book written by Bruce Cumings displays the intellectual capabilities of a true professor, the deep descriptions and accounts of East Asian relations are conceptually flawless. I can proudly say that my older brother Ian has this work of impecable art for bedtime reading. Forget Green Eggs and Ham and the Cat in the Hat, my 17 year old brother demands perfection in the field of asian history. Thank to you, my son has entered the field of history as the youngest professor at South-East Oklahoma State University.

The word "parallax" in this title is quickly explained: by changing your position the thing you are lloking at will also seem to change. In observing East Asia, there has been a tendency (at least prior to the april 2001 incident) you might think that American influence was declining as China and Japan are emerging as regional - global - powers.Cumings is not alarmed and believes that capitalist and democratic counties w111 continue to co-operate while and the move towards free trade and international will remain strong as more asian countries participate. As values are increasingly shared between Asia and America, it is misleading to stress the differences. America will remain the region's dominant power for a long time yet. The biggest threats to n Asia are misperceptions, exaggerated fears or imaginary "sunspots".One not so imaginary spot is Afghanistan and Central Asia.the near future will provide an ideal testing ground for Mr. Cumings theory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting new perspectives, but some problems
This book offers a lot of new ideas, and if half of them are true then it is worth reading. But some of the ideas put forth, like for instance trying to relate the cult of Kim Il Sung in post war Korea to the Japanese cult of the emperror when Korea was a colony are a bit of a stretch. Also, the author seems to know much more about Korea, he is okay with Japan, and biased about China, and undestimating its place in the world. It is definitely worth reading but read it critically. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rates a place on the bookshelf
Colonial Williamsburg... sets a high standard for illustrated books on gardens, the Colonial kitchen, and the decorative arts in the occasional books it publishes.

The latest from CW's presses is Susan Hight Rountree's "From a Colonial Garden: Ideas, Decorations, Recipes" ($24.95). The first section introduces the reader to the formal but colorful gardens visitors can admire in the restored area -- but these gardens also serve a practical purpose as succeeding sections attest...

The book is strong on weddings, offering a winter reception at the Williamsburg Inn or a summer ceremony at a James River plantation. Ms. Rountree... also uses garden materials to make gifts, wreaths, table decorations, and other items throughout the year. The section on Christmas is especially useful, and readers will want to remember to consult the book in early November, before the holidays, for fresh ideas.

This not primarily a cookbook, but Ms. Rountree includes recipes for seasonal dishes to round out her sections... As with all CW publications, this new book upholds the benchmarks of taste and style readers have learned to expect, and will rate a place on the bookshelf of gardener, cook, and home decorator.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining with a 'Colonial' Flair
The newest entertaining and decorating book from Colonial Williamsburg combines touches of elegance with moments of fun and fantasy.

The 212-page book, "From A Colonial Garden: Ideas, Decorations, Recipes" is divided into chapters that take you through the seasons and many special occasions such as weddings, bridal showers and rehearsal dinners. There are 287 color photos and 24 illustrations to guide you every step of the way.

Best of all, most of the projects are simple to create... For example, veggies such as colorful peppers are used to create a zesty-looking centerpiece on the nail-studded wooden cone that's typically covered with apples and sprigs of boxwood...

One of her easiest and sunniest table arrangements is perfect for a summer picnic or cookout. A partially hollowed-out watermelon serves as a container for a bouquet of zinnias, rudbeckia, coreopsis, apple mint and rosemary...

Rountree says the chapters on ideas from the spring garden are her favorite sections because they encourage you to use so many fresh flowers. "I'd like to see more people doing that," she says. "Fresh flowers are so many places these days--in the markets or you can grow your own."

A chapter on garnishes from the spring garden also features Rountree's garden pet--the Cheshire Cheese Hedgehog... English folklore says it's a sign of good luck when you find a hedgehog in your garden. The book features an easy cheese-based recipe for making the hedgehog. "I've had such fun with him, he'll be in every book," she says.

3-0 out of 5 stars Is there a future for the JLA?
This Infinite Crisis crossover finds founding member Batman having dissolved the JLA but Green Arrow determined to keep it together as one of the seven deadly sins, Envy, and telepathic supervillain the Key begin causing problems. The JLA aren't seen as gods here; they're mortals arguing with each other over the power they wield.Green Arrow, Raven, Black Canary, and Batman take center stage here.

3-0 out of 5 stars An Uneventful End to a Great Run
This volume collects issues #120-125 of the JLA series, and is also the final volume in the run of Justice League comics started by Grant Morrison in JLA (Book 1): New World Order. The league has dissolved following the events of Identity Crisis (DC Comics) and JLA: Crisis of Conscience (Identity Crisis) (Countdown to Infinite Crisis). As Green Arrow struggles to pull together a new alliance of heroes, one of the league's earliest foes returns more dangerous than ever.

This is a perfectly enjoyable story, but in hindsight it's not one that needs to be told. Everything that needed to be said about the League's breakup was already covered in "Crisis of Conscience," so this arc really doesn't do much except re-tread the hurt feelings and bickering from past issues. I suspect the only reason JLA was even extended to these last 6 issues was so DC would have something to fill in the publishing schedule until the Justice League was relaunched with Justice League of America, Vol. 1: The Tornado's Path. Writer Bob Harras does the best he can with the material, and the narrative flows pretty well. This is pretty impressive considering the middle sections of the story seem to exist purely to tie into the events of Infinite Crisis. The OMACs from The OMAC Project (Countdown to Infinite Crisis) appear, and Donna Troy drops by to randomly yank a few characters off into space to face the threat from The Rann-Thanagar War (Countdown to Infinite Crisis). Even the real bad guy of this story is tied to the fallout from Day of Vengeance (Countdown to Infinite Crisis). As you may realize by now, this was one of DC's more "involved" tie-in crossover epics, and a lot of the story is pretty much an aside to the real action that is happening elsewhere.

Which is too bad, because the 90s JLA was a great comic that had a mostly solid run, and it deserved better than to fizzle out like this at the end. One or two issues of memorial would've seemed appropriate, six is overkill. Worth a look if you're into the Infinite Crisis saga or if you've bought all the other JLA volumes and just want to round out the set. Otherwise this is pretty skippable for the casual reader.

1-0 out of 5 stars Argg...Boring
I got this book based on a recommendation from a user on this site and boy, that was a big mistake!Basically, this is just a bunch of stories, each about a member of JLA who is facing a personal problem mostly involving the weight of the world on his or her shoulders and not being able to save everyone and grieving the people they were not able to save. The stories don't really link together, although some stories get revisited at the end.Artwork is on low-quality non-glossy paper and the colors look washed-out.The drawings are less than average. The whole book is really short and while I'm not suggesting it should be longer due to the boring subject matter, I am suggesting to not buy the book at all because it's just a waste of time and a pretty uninteresting read.By far, the weakest book in my collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
The story was suppose to make the league feel more human and let everyone know they are even able to fail. It starts out with Superman and unfolds into stories on the rest of the league going in the order Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Wonder Woman, and finally Batman. Even though each seems like it could almost be a one shot it is more of an overall story with an individual focus on a different character in each new chapter. Art was pretty good but, a fall off a little bit from the previous volumes but, I'd recommend it to anyone wanting a good JLA read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Angst in the JLA
One's greatest enemy can be oneself. When talking about a team, a group of individuals, just one virulent seed need be planted in order to grow into a divisive force which could bring the collective whole down. Add to the internal flames of friction external pressures from mysterious outside forces and you have the makings for an inferno. In this case the particular team that we are discussing is the powerful Justice League of America, who due to these factors, among others, is currently a team on the brink of destruction. At the forefront of this conflagration are Batman and Green Arrow, polar opposites even in the best of times. As a leading member of the JLA, Batman's mistrust of the other members due to the infamous mindwipe incident is contrasted by their mutual resentment over his private dossiers that he kept on them and which resulted in such dire consequences and ramifications during the Tower of Babel storyline. The JLA is a microcosm of society as a whole, with the moral being we all must put aside our petty jealousies and work towards the greater good. Through work and pain we can overcome the obstacles and become stronger. Critics knock this book for its' angst-centric theme, a direction that many do not want to see DC head towards, myself included. However in this case it works well and was made more palatable by the many witty verbal battles, along with a few physical ones, most primarily between Batman and Green Arrow. This was during the peak of Batman's dark loner period, which was referenced often, and he was thus the object of most of the verbal barbs. It was a pleasant change to see G.A. take a few blows himself and be exposed as the hypocritical jerk that he is though. This isn't just another superhero good guy vs. bad guy tale. This goes to the core of what heroes are and what they are made of, with all of their flaws and warts exposed for the world to see, and more importantly, for themselves to see. From the ashes arises something greater. This wasn't as much a story about resolution as it was about transition, and thanks to Bob Harras' well written script, an enjoyable story at that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hoover Wilderness Map Nice but Incomplete
I have been studying the Central Sierra wilderness areas rigourously for enjoyment and trip planning. I purchased this map of the Hoover wildernees and it is nice for the Nothern and Eastern areas only. It does not include the most southern areas of the Hoover wilderness. It is missing the Saddlebag Lake and Warren Fork trailheads and their surrounding areas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Explore the Hoover Wilderness
I must confess that I had never been into the Hoover Wilderness prior to this summer.I stopped in the Bridgeport Ranger Station to inquire about other trailheads in the Humbolt Toiyabe National Forest and a trailhead ranger there noted that he never visited Yosemite since the Hoover Wildernes had so much to offer. So I purchased this map and set to hiking the area. One thing that is immediately apparent from the map:the Hoover Wilderness is not typical of Eastern Sierra hiking. It offers lots of long broad canyons with relatively little elevation gain. You get spectacular scenery with relatively little effort.

The Hoover Wilderness lies between the lowlands of Bridgeport south to Lee Vining and north to Hwy 108, just east of Yosemite. This map clearly shows the Yosemite border and Hoover Wilderness trailheads are probably the best way to access northern Yosemite.Like other Harrison maps, this one is printed in color on waterproof and tear resistant paper.Trail heads and access points from Hwy 395 are clearly shown, and contour interval is an easy to read 80 feet.Harrison does a good job distinguishing well maintained trails from secondary routes and on the ground I found the trails easy to read and follow. For those addicted to technology, this map is of course GPS compatible.

My only complaint about Harrison Maps is that sometimes his miles seem a bit longer than other found in other sources:for example he has the trail to Green Lake as 2 miles, while a popular guidebook has 2.3 (and from the new trailhead it may be even farther).Still, the Hoover Wilderness has a lot to offer (an afternoon at Barney Lake is as close to Heaven as most humans can get in their lifetime) and this map is a helpful tool for exploring it. ...
