Product Description
Written by Tom 'Jack' Sullivan Green, AB of Bristol in the 1920s, "Escape to the Sea" is an inspiring, first-hand account of survival against the odds of an orphan boy in early Victorian England. Recounted in a fluent style and peppered with dialogue, this gripping tale of a seaman's life chronicles both tragedy and comedy amongst the everyday lot of a working world unimaginable in the modern era. Tom traces his early life when cholera claimed his Irish immigrant parents in the London slums of 1848; being apprenticed to a tailor before running away to sea to escape a 'miserable life'. His new life as an Ordinary Seaman began at Rochester on a West Hartlepool-based ship, but when a new and tyrannical skipper made terrifying death threats he was again forced to run away.Walking from London to Liverpool in 1866 to try his hand on trans-Atlantic passages, he gives a chilling account of the last public hanging at Stafford of a murderer, William Collier. Later in the same year, Tom's travels take him to Georgia, USA where he gives an eye-witness account of the tragic plight of slaves who were freed after the American Civil War.Homeless and weakened by starvation and disease, they came to the river bank to collect driftwood only to be grabbed by alligators. This description and other harrowing sights he saw ashore leave a searing impression of the aftermath of a devastating conflict. Following various brushes with authority, Tom changes his name to Jack Green and lies low taking shore jobs near Cardiff where he turns down working digging the Severn Tunnel due to claustrophobia. Eventually settling and marrying near Bristol, he experienced more exotic times as a mariner before he 'swallowed the anchor'.These included plying the former slave routes to West Africa; accompanying the third mate of his ship with some locally-recruited native sailors to collect the future bride of a chieftain which incurred a series of adventures, some at gunpoint. "Escape to the Sea" is complemented with documents such as the author's discharge certificates, illustrations of vessels and harbours visited, maps and photographs including his handwritten will, which required that 'when the breath is out of my body' it should be buried 'with no ceremony whatsoever'.A modest end for a colourful character whose wish was that his experiences should be made available to a wider audience than his immediate family. This action-packed maritime autobiography will be of especial interest to anyone with an interest in maritime history, ships and shipping and anyone looking for a good read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From DV to Web without loosing your mind
Fantastic training book for video professionals breaking into web delivery.Easy to understand explanations and examples, perfect for someone who understands the basics of the web, and wants to get their work out there for people to see. This book shows you how to create interfaces just like myspace and youtube, so your site can be easy to navigate for any web audience. However, it also gives you the tools to get really creative with your video viewer - so you can say, with gusto, 'what box'?This is a must have for ALL video professionals, even if you're not on the web yet - you will be.

1-0 out of 5 stars Huge Disappointment
I bought this book being a big fan of the Friends of Ed series and expecting that an entire book on just Flash Video would cover all I need to know and then some. Wow, was I wrong. There is hardly anything to be learned here.

I'd be willing to bet you'll learn a lot more from a video chapter in a general Flash book like Flash Bible than you will from this.

As an example, one thing I wanted to do is display a video's current and remaining time (like YouTube does). None of the current FLV skins support this, only the Media Player component which you can't customize. This is not covered anywhere in the book. Maybe its just me but I think that is a HUGE omission. The chapter on customizing your skins is short and elementary...nothing new to learn. And that was the main reason I bought the book. I emailed the author about the time thing, and got back a link of an FLV showing only the current seconds in decimal form. Much like the book, no effort was put into this.

Luckily in an online forum someone was good enough to post their code on how to link up text boxes with the current and total playing time of an FLV, in conventional time format. Honestly I learned more from those 3 small blocks of code than I did from this entire book.

Steer clear and save your money for an ActionScript book. You won't learn anything from this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Foundation
This is a well-written and enjoyable immersion into the nuts and bolts of creating and publishing video on the web using Flash 8. Aimed squarely at those beginning to work with Flash Video, the book is quite thorough for that audience. Most importantly, it covers all the essential principles one needs. From data rates for encoding videos to alpha channel effects to using the BitMapData and other classes, this book will set you up to launch that internet tv channel you've been thinking about.

However, if you're looking for the mind-bendingly master kung-fu video tricks that break existing rules of reality, I'm afraid you'll have to look further. Or write it yourself!

I like the clear organization and simple instructions the writers give. The book serves as a handy reference for those just starting to use video and other related objects in Flash. The code is broken down and explained for the reader and one can use these building blocks in combinations to stunning effect. Especially helpful is the section on playing multiple videos.

The writers make the whole thing fun and light. Hell, we're all playing around figuring out what we can do with these toys. I'd like more heavy, serious passages as well, though. Still, worth the cover preice, though.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Place To Start
Title: Foundation Flash 8 Video
Author: Green & Chilcott
Publisher: Apress/FriendsofEd

Begins with an overview of video file formats with brief descriptions of each. The various steps involved in creating an FLV file are covered using the Video Wizard and the Flash 8 Video Encoder. Ample screenshots with settings selected are provided, as are descriptions of all the menu options, etc. Basic video editing is described using readily available programs like MovieMaker and iMovie. Alternative FLV creation tools such as Sorenson Squeeze and ON2Flix are covered also, with start-to-finish examples provided for both. FLV components as well as the video object are introduced also.

Alpha channels and keying are described with various tutorials using Premiere Pro, After Effects, and FinalCut Pro. Using a single clip, users learn how to remove background from video with these applications. The keying plugins used in the Adobe program tutorials are specific to the Creative Suite Production Bundle. Users of the standalone versions of these programs will be able to achieve the same results using other included plugins.

Filters, blend effects, and masking provide an insight into the creative potential of Flash video. One compositing tutorial I found particularly useful used a single FLV file to demonstrate the different effects possible using drop shadows. Others use Illustrator shapes to create masks, and ActionScript code samples enable the manipulation of mask color as well as creating motion. Other useful topics with their own chapters include creating video walls and choosing and playing multiple videos. Bandwidth issues and their importance are stressed several times here.

Streaming video using the camera object is described in detail, as well as creating a video box and flipping video. The creative possiblities seem endless. If you have a webcam installed, you can see yourself on multiple billboards in Times Square using the Chapter 10 tutorials. The last two chapters get further into ActionScript and motion graphics using After Effects.

The book itself provides a solid introduction to Flash video, and demonstrates the many ways Flash now increasingly interacts with other programs. The tutorials are straight-forward and practical, and keep the reader interested. Like other FriendsofEd books, all the source files are

Foundation Flash 8 Video
by Tom Green and Jordan Chilcott
Publisher: Friends of Ed
Copyright: 2006
ISBN:-13(pkb): 978-1-59059-651-7

If you need some inspiration, this is a good book to read. It starts out basic and gets becomes advanced.

It explains the whole video process from scratch. One part that I liked was the description of buffering. The book explains that the key to successful playback is the data rate and storing enough packets before the video starts.

This author has fun with video. He is always showing you the amazing things you can do with a very small amount of code. He starts with showing you what the components can do and then ramps up with a very simple code sample that is required
to connect a video object to a web server.

Next Tom and Jordan go into Alpha Channels. They show you how to make a video clip with a green screen mask, attach it to a video object and add a drop shadow. Other exciting topics are: trim a video and use it like an ad banner, play video on video, adding cue points to trigger Flash events, and having someone walk across your web page in a browser. You can do amazing things like having a talking head discuss car models and adding a race car in another video zooming by in the background.

Filters are discussed and how they are added to a video embedded in a movie clip. He warns you that adding filters can be processor intensive.

Some of the things you learn are: moving your mouse across a video and creating trail of blur as you go. Also projecting a video onto an underlying image
with a screen blend mode.

Masking videos is discussed. You can create a mask in Illustrator, drag it into Flash and make it a mask layer. In Illustrator you would apply the roughen filter to 0.5 and the chalk scribble brush stroke. This would be placed as another copy above the mask to enable the details of the artwork to show.

Tom and Jordan show you how to fill Times Square with your own videos by removing the ads, and making masks for your own video feeds.

There is quite a lot of information about building a video wall. He explains getting the Flash Media Server 2 for no charge.

One of the crucial things about working with video the authors say is "Watching the pipe". This means always considering how much bandwidth you are using.

This book is not a complete resource on the Flash Media Server 2 or After Effects but, it touches on them just enough to get you interested.

The authors even leave you with a bit of information on video cameras and how to hook them up with just 2 lines of code. I enjoyed the fun approach in this book and its simplification of a complex topic.

1-0 out of 5 stars What Stewart said
Stewart (below) had already written my review for me before I logged in to do it...he's right on the money.I'm not new to web development or Cold Fusion and am so fascinated by Dreamweaver MX 2004 (absolutely buy the beyond excellent "Missing Manual" book for it, BTW) that I bought Studio MX 2004 and I hoped this book would get me up and running. After 115 pages of cryptic how-to's that assume you already know how-to, and a lot of discussion about how to deal with your client and draw a flowchart (the diamond shape is a decision box, it sez here...really!), I threw up my hands and realized I had made a bad buy.If you already know the individual products in Studio well, this may be of great help to you.If you're coming from Cold Fusion Studio and have limited exposure to graphic design, run far, far away from this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much saying we're great, too little technique!
We purchased this book hoping (from the great reviews it got in Amazon) it would be the missing link to learning the techniques advertised, however the book does a fairly poor job of presenting the advertised techniques and makes quite a few mistakes. After using the excellent "Training from the source" books published by Macromedia, this book is a real let down. The book seems more like a pat on the backs for corporate style departmentalized development than it does a training manual. The authors start off wasting several chapters telling you that you can't develop competent websites by yourself as an individual web developer anymore then waste more space convincing themselves that wasted space was valuable. They do eventually get to some technique development but when they do they don't make their presentation in a straight forward fashion. If we were not already developers used to Macromedia Studio MX 2004 tools and capabilities this book would have been impossible to benefit from.Having such knowledge, this book is of little help.We would have given the book a two star rating except for the fact that we bought it because of the five star ratings we saw on Amazon (that's all it had then), and we cannot understand how it could ever get more than three. If we would have had any idea how little help this book would be we would not have bought it.If these authors would have stuck to presenting the techniques advertised in a step-by-step progression, editorially reviewed their work for accuracy and eliminated all of the fluff regarding departmentalization for development, they might have created a valuable product. As it is, it's not worth recommending.Macromedia's Training from the Source books like:

3-0 out of 5 stars Who proofread this?
Although I am learning a lot from this book, it is a struggle. The step by step instructions are not always clear and sometimes omit important information. Other times the text is just sloppy. For instance, the authors say to name a file, say, file1. Through the rest of the example they refer to the file as file_1. Saying a button is the second from the right on a vertical toolbar is another. It's a good thing you can download the project files from the publisher's website to see what they really are talking about. If I didn't already have experience with Dreamweaver 4 and Fireworks 4, I'd probably be really lost.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is set to become a classic.
Hands up those of you who have been to one those free Macromedia seminars where a team of speakers attempt to present all the wonders of Studio MX 2004 over a period of a few hours? Absolutely riveting stuff. Database driven Flash, Cold Fusion interaction, calendars and booking systems, streaming media, fantastic looking demo sites, css tricks, templates, Flash chat rooms. Now hands up those of you who could remember how to do any of it 10 minutes after leaving the conference centre. Frustrating isn't it?

Enter "Building Dynamic Web Sites with Macromedia Studio MX 2004". This book is set to become a classic. It will change the way you work with "Studio MX 2004" forever. For a start you will find yourself using the entire package to it's full potential as opposed to just tinkering around the edges.

The book revolves around the building of a Web Site for the "Oakbridge Recreation Center". Excited yet? Stick around. This is not just any old Web Site. This is state of the art Cold Fusion / Flash / DMX / MySql masterpiece complete with a Virtual Tour of the facilities based on the visitors interests, an online booking facility and the piece de resistance .... an online meeting facility flexible enough to offer services ranging from a text input chat facility to streaming video and audio.

Scared yet? Don't be. The authors go out of their way to guide you step by step through the process using ample diagrams and screen grabs. Their writing style is up close and personal, almost as if they were sitting next to you having a chat. Their approach throughout is to let the software do all the hard work.

This book is a trip of discovery and along the way you will encounter Flash Remoting, The Flash Communication Server and the use of Flash MX 2004 components, dynamic templates, Dreamweaver's new CSS capabilities, the advantages of using Fireworks as your primary graphics tool and much much more. Just take a look through the Table Of Contents to get a feel for the scope of the book.

This book is aimed at the intermediate user. The guy who has used Dreamweaver and messed with a bit of Flash and is now ready for greater things. If you own Studio MX 2004 you NEED this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Reference for Web Production
Once again, this writng team has pulled off an excellent book! This book is an excellent referecne for anyone in the web production industry, from project managers, to programmers to designers. It gives an excellent overview of the entitre production process, with actual task-based projects.

While this book will not make you an MX 2004 expert, it will do a wonderful job of showing you how all the pieces of the MX 2004 suite work together, and how this software package can save you time.

I was very impressed with the way the book is broken out into production phases - from the minute the phone rings with a new client asking questions - to the finished project.

This book is not jsut a reference, but a production tool in itself. I know I will make use of many examples during my own web design courses. ... Read more

Product Description

Hear this history-making serial novel -- from cliffhanger to cliffhanger -- in its entirety.

When it first appeared, one volume per month, Stephen King's The Green Mile was an unprecedented publishing triumph: all six volumes ended up on the New York Times bestseller list -- simultaneously -- and delighted millions of fans the world over.

Welcome to Cold Mountain Penitentiary, home to the Depression-worn men of E Block. Convicted killers all, each awaits his turn to walk the Green Mile, keeping a date with "Old Sparky," Cold Mountain's electric chair. Prison guard Paul Edgecombe has seen his share of oddities in his years working the Mile. But he's never seen anyone like John Coffey, a man with the body of a giant and the mind of a child, condemned for a crime terrifying in its violence and shocking in its depravity. In this place of ultimate retribution, Edgecombe is about to discover the terrible, wondrous truth about Coffey, a truth that will challenge his most cherished beliefs...and yours.Amazon.com Review
When Stephen King originally wrote The Green Mile as aseries of six novellas, he didn't even know how the story would turnout. And it turned out to be of his finest yarns, tapping into what hedoes best: character-driven storytelling. The setting is the small"death house" of a Southern prison in 1932. The Green Mile is the hallwith a floor "the color of tired old limes" that leads to "Old Sparky"(the electric chair). The charming narrator is an old man, a prisonguard, looking back on the events decades later.

Maybe it's a little too cute (there's a smart prison mouse named Mr.Jingles), maybe the pathos is laid on a little thick, but it's hard toresist the colorful personalities and simple wonders of thissupernatural tale. And it's not a bad choice for giving to someone whodoesn't understand the appeal of Stephen King, because the one scenethat is out-and-out gruesome (it involves "Old Sparky") can be easilyskipped by the squeamish.

The Green Mile won a 1997 Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel; andTom Hanks stars in a film of the novel by Frank Darabont, the directorof The ShawshankRedemption (from King's collection DifferentSeasons). --Fiona Webster ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Painful read
SPOILER
Indeed it was a painful read. This exceptional Stephen King's novel is far from his typical genre which is 'horror'. It tells about a magical, rather rare human experience.

It has a very sad ending that almost brought me to tears. The last pages were just outstanding. One, for example, when Paul's wife was dying in his hand after the accident, Paul was shouting at John Coffee to bring her back to life, but afterwhat? After putting John Coffee to death? Ofcourse Paul was imagining that he saw Coffee walking by.

This part was so sad, I don't know why it wasn't in the movie. And the ultimate surprise in the end, where Paul (in the nursery home) confesses that he is very, very old as well as the poor mouse! (I don't remember the number now), and that was a punishment from God making him live long and see all his loved ones die around him because Paul didn't save Coffee from the murder he was innocent from.

Enjoyable read from the beginning till the very ending sentence. It is indeed one of the greatest books I will ever live to read and appreciate.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best I've ever read!
I'm an avid King fan and I can honestly say that I've read almost everything he has written.Yes, Stephen King is an amazing author for thr horror genre, but I feel that The Green Mile tops them all. It's compelling and it will grip onto your heart and dig it's fingers in until the very last page.A must read for all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I started reading the Green Mile when it first became available, in the "mini-series".I absolutely could not wait to get the next book. The story was exceptional, I felt like I was an inhabitant of "the mile".When I found out that they were making a Movie, I was immediately disapointed, becasue I felt there was no way that it would do the book justice (like so many of King's books).I could have been more wrong, I loved the movie almost as much as the book, Michael Clark Duncan was born to play John.Whether you read the book(s), or watch the movie, do not miss this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars once captured, you don't want to escape
After "Needful Things," and the destruction of Castle Rock, Maine, I wondered where Stephen King would find another setting to lock his loyal legionsin, and turn up the voltage. He found it, in a '30s Georgia prison. The book is only about a million times better than the movie--nothing new for a King novel. The narrator, head guard on Death Row, and his henchmen are, with one exception, kinder and gentler guards than the monsters of "Shawshank Redemption" fame.We all could do well to follow the values of the narrator, who clearly loved his wife, and put his future in peril to save the life of his boss's wife, in the only way possible, using the powers of a convicted killer. As always, the characters are memorable--they are even in King's worst books. But here, as in his very best books, the plot and characters together create a novel from which you wouldn't want a reprieve.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but misrepresented
The picture shows a thumbnail of the cover of one of the six original installments.I was therefore expecting the six separate books, and instead recieved a single copy with a big picture of Tom Hanks' face on the cover.I know it's just personal preference, but I HATE getting the books that have the movie cover on them.Again, just a personal thing, but I do wish that representation had been more straightforward. Also, the cover had a relatively large tear in it, which is obviously not very cool.On the other side of things, I absolutely loved the book itself, but that's a given. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars pass on this title
Numerous mistakes; instructions are very difficult to follow because nearly all of them are not illustrated. A very frustrating experience. Normal projects that should have taken 20 minutes to complete toke nearly two hours try to figure out what the author meant. Not up to FriendsofEd's standards but then again a few of their more recent titles are really showing rush work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Poetry Doesn't Have to Rhyme, But It's Easier to Remember if it Does.
Another great book for the beginner. Not so great for the experienced. Those familiar with Flash and just getting started with After Effects will enjoy this tour of possibilty. You CAN use these two powerful tools together to get more done in a better way for the medium you choose. The message of the book is clearly: 'Use the Right Tool for the Job'. There's a lot you can do with Flash that's just easier with After Effects and vice versa. Why make life difficult for yourself? Buy this book. Lighten your load. (Or borrow it from a library. Or just read it at the store.)

When is it best to use After Effects or Flash? And why? Don't expect this book to answer those questions for you. Oftentimes, choosing the right tool depends on your situation. And the examples given in the book focus mostly on neat, yet basic, effects exported from After Effects and delivered through Flash. All good starting points for the motion graphic artist, but not necessarily finished to a fine... erm, point. (As media converges, so do my metaphors.)

The authors walk us through the basic steps of working in After Effects. But, an After Effects book this is not. It simply points the way. And the way is convergence. (See?) After reading this book I feel the need to read a lot more books. Or get an AE expert and Flash guru in the same room and interrogate them aggressively.

Many techniques are touched upon, but not much is dissected in a truly deep manner. There are three chapters on text effects, much about particle effects, masks are explainedas are track mattes. Even a little about 3D, and some Illustrator tips, too. Also, a chapter on audio for good measure. When you bite off that much, you really have to chew for a long time.

All that being said, it is a well-written and useful book for those of us just starting out with this stuff. And the can-do, fun tone of the authors is always appreciated.

From After Effects to Flash Poetry in Motion Graphics
By Tom Green and Tiago Dias

ISBN:-130pkb:978-1-59059-748-4

Sometimes video can be seen as a very difficult area of Flash. This book gives you the courage to go forward. The author's refer to video as uncharted or "Dragon Country" They cite an artic map of the 1500's that has wording on it stating "Here be dragons"

The book tells you how Flash and After Effects play well together and how to avoid dragons. After Effects functionality really beefs up what can be accomplished with Flash.

Tom Green describes the creative process as learning the fundamentals and then "driving a truck through it" He talks about how the lines are blurred between what is a video and what is an animation.

The authors teach through causing you to ask, "How did they do that?" They give you a completed project and you reverse engineer it and answer for yourself how it was done.

This book helps you decide when to encode the FLV in After Effects and when it is better to use the Flash FLV encoder.

Of course the fundamental maxim of DV is "data rate controls quality." Other maxims are "Bandwidth controls the user experience" and "always keep an eye on the pipe." The Flash developer must have a solid bandwidth strategy in place for the user, the sever and the video.

Tom Green shows you how simple it is to make a custom video player with pause/play rewind, scrubber and on/off buttons. The simple steps are: CONNECT, STREAM, and PLAY.

The book shows you how to create a rich media ad with Illustrator content. Then it moves the file to After Effects for the Raining Characters, Drop Bounce and Boomerang, Wiggle and Chaotic preset effects. Then it brings the files into Flash and makes them FLV's. Then they show you how to use a glow effect to turn on a light bulb.

Destructive cue points that are hard wired into Flash (not removable) and non-destructive cue points (removeable) which are done with code are discussed. Discussion of playing multiple videos in a Flash movie by using multiple net streams is mentioned.

Practical tips are given such as: how to trim down the dimensions of an After Effects file and bring it into Flash to avoid slowing down the video.

Sine wave animation is done in After Effects without complex coding. Using a ramp filter to make gradients, blinking and melting text, and a strobe light effect is described. Use of plugins for After Effects by Cycore demonstrate how to shatter everything and blow it up. 3d - the Holy Grail of Flash and how to get a creative jolt with After Effects is previewed.

This book is helpful whether you are thinking of learning After Effects or would just like to know how to work with an After Effect expert when doing Flash movies.

3-0 out of 5 stars Should be a Foundation title
By now, everyone knows the great enhancements to working with video that Flash 8 brought with it.As someone who works closely with a motion animator in After Effects, I figured it'd be a great idea to check this book out and see what others are doing with it.I have to admit, I was sorely disappointed with what this book had to offer. To its credit, the book never did state that it was going to show me any groundbreaking After Effects stuff and how to leverage it in Flash to create a crazy, dynamic, animation driven website. However, when I think of the stuff that has been done with AE and Flash over the past year or two, I don't really consider the awesomeness of the text animation and lens flares (Chapter 5) and exploding Flash text (Chapter 7).

There is much more to working with After Effects and Flash than things like this which were possible to do 5 years ago.I look at sites created by companies such as Big Spaceship and North Kingdom and always wonder, how did they do that.I know that they used video/After Effects for some of this stuff but I'm not quite sure how to wrap my head around the process of doing it since I'm not extremely familiar with AE and how to compress everything properly to bring into Flash for ease of use.

I'd like to see even something as simple as a particle system effect from AE used in a Flash button, which hundreds of sites are doing these days, or a particle system on a preloader (which always puzzles me since you have to keep the size of the preloader really small so that you don't have to make a preloader for a preloader), but instead we get fed with some drivel about preset text effects in AE (Chapter 3) and masking videos (Chapter 9).That now makes a total of 3 chapters that are talking about text.I'm not sure about you, but I don't spend a plethora of hours on each project trying to figure out how I want the text to animate in on an intro animation (one reason being that I very rarely ever create intro animations unless a client just flat out insists on having one, but still...).

This title would have been better served being labeled a Foundation title which friends of ED usually dishes out to introductory level books. It doesn't have the pizzazz that I was hoping from a title this misleading and I would not recommend this book unless you are absolutely just starting out using video in Flash 8 and After Effects (although, if you're a Flash guy, I'd suggest their other video title, Foundation Flash 8 Video, which could be the reason why this book didn't get the Foundation stamp in the first place).

1-0 out of 5 stars A Different Kind of Williamsburg
I was initially drawn to this book by the front cover with its brilliantly colored fruit and flowers in an epergne similar to one I own. However, I was quite disappointed. The cover and title led me to believe there would be a much richer content, like the reputation and feel of the historic city. Instead I found more of a 4th grade "arts & crafts" theme. (C'mon, really.....dough ornaments, orange clove pomanders, gingerbread houses???) Many of the photos reminded me of an outdated late 1980s/early 1990s decorating style. (Ronald Reagan and Wham! called....they want their era back!) This book was a genuine disappointment. I would love to read one with more "grown up" entertaining and decorating ideas that seamlessly meld the Williamsburg of old with this century's take on freshening up the look.

After reading book 1, she started reading 3, got confused but said she'd enjoyed book 1. I ordered the set. After reading book 1 again, she went on to 2. From there she read all 6 books. 4-0 out of 5 stars Funny and Inspiring, Easy Read
I bought a copy of this book based on a recommendation from a running website.I didn't expect it to be a collection of short stories from runners.I guess the title "Ultimate Runner" threw me off.I expected it to be a guide for ultramarathoners.I know... I know... I should have read the preface or something but I sometimes don't like doing that because I don't really want to know much about what I'm about to read.

Even though my expectation was different, I very much enjoyed reading this book, and it was indeed an easy read. There were times when I couldn't stop laughing and there were times I had to shed some tears. There's also a section of miscellaneous tips about running in general which is a great help particularly if you're a newbie in the running world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy and Inspiring Read
This is a very easy to read book of short stories organized into seven sections. The first six sections are stories written by common/regular people, with the seventh section composed of advice articles by experts. Most of the stories in the first six sections are 3-5 pages of large font type, so they are quick reads.

I found the first section "Why We Run: Physical Transformation" to be the most difficult to read as it was not capturing my attention. I'm not sure if was because the stories seemed to be similar or they dealt with challenging circumstances - overcoming drug addition, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. Once I got into the second and later sections though, it became an easy and enjoyable read that I readily reached for when I had a few moments.

If you know someone who is just taking up running, consider giving them this book as a gift. Likewise, I would recommend to anyone who has been running for sometime and is getting a bit burned out. It is impossible not to be inspired by the stories in this book and one of the reasons that it took me so long to read it is that I could only make it through a story or two before I wanted to go for a run.

My only complaint about the book is that some of the stories were too short. There were several stories where I cried "no" at the end because I wanted more. These were real people, I had become invested in their story, and was not ready to give up. In the end, this marks it as a good book - the fact that I still recall specific stories and think about the people and what happened to them after the story ended.

The articles in section seven "Must-Know Info" may not contain any new information for regular readers of Runners World or those who visit sites such as [...] on a regular basis, but is a concise set of "Must Know" information in one place. This information is very beneficial for the experienced as well as the new runner. I recently pulled my calf muscle and if I had paid more attention to the Must Know articles, this most likely would not have happened.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun, easy read
Have you heard of Runners' Lounge? It's a pretty cool place where you can interact with runners from all over the place. In addition, the creators, Amy and Tom, are all about getting to know your runners of all types. From the person who does run/walk 5Ks to the person who runs super-fast marathons.

Together Amy and Tom decided they wanted to create a book to celebrate all these runners that were sharing there stories in the Runners' Lounge. So they teamed up with a publisher and The Ultimate Runner was born!

I was lucky enough to receive a free copy of this book from Amy and Tom and they asked me to share my review with all my readers. I started it last week and even though I'm an admittedly fast reader I can tell you that it would be a quick and fun read for anyone who likes running. Especially those of you out there that like to read blogs.

Imagine if someone combined your favorite blog posts about why someone runs or her most memorable race and put them into book form. And then, just to top it all off, added helpful information about cross-training, nutrition, stretching, and injuries. What a great idea, right?

Well, that's what The Ultimate Runner does. The first part of the book is divided into sections talking about the emotional, the physical, the social, the memorable and all the other aspects of running that inspire us to get out there. The second part is devoted to advice from fitness and running experts.

I truly believe that any runner, aspiring runner, or family of a runner would find at least one story in this book that he or she could relate to. Whether it's the story about the woman who tried running only to decide she makes a better support team for her running family or the story about the woman who does Ironman triathlons. Or the story about the people who run after a cancer diagnosis or just because they need something to make them feel alive even when they're healthy. There really is something in there for everyone.

Some of the expert advice might be repetitive for anyone whose read more than one issue of Runners' World or hung around any online running forum so I admit that I sort of skimmed that part. But, you never know what you don't know so there's always a chance you'll learn something new.

I think my only criticism is that I wanted more stories of runners! Also, since I'm sure that Amy and Tom found many of these stories via blog submissions I would have liked to see some acknowledgment of whether or not the authors had blogs I could go check out. Thankfully they are doing some of that over in the Lounge and I can understand why, editorially, they didn't include links to blogs that might not be there permanently. But, still, would have been nice.

Regardless, it was a nice, easy read that left me with a few gems to think about the next time I'm in need of some inspiration. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For lovers of Barry and Hal!
Fantastic stories that feature Barry Allen as the Flash and Hal Jordan as Green Lantern, in their earlier days. A little glimpse into the kindred spirits of two of DC's most legendary heroes and their fun, adventurous, and at times trying friendship.

Your appreciation of Mark Waid's excellent work here will be much greater if you already have a love for these two characters, however this is a great read for anybody wanting to get to know them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flawed and funny characters....
There is always a debate between comic fans as to who is better: Marvel or DC?

Marvel usually wins out because it is believed that there are more flawed, or 'down to Earth' characters.

Reading this very interesting entry with The Flash and Green Lantern, we see the goings on with two friends as they deal with issues in and out of uniform (particularly Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern): Friendship, financial woes, living up to expectations...(as both The Flash and the Green Lantern meet, and spend time with their predecessors).

I personally didn't really get into these two characters until recently. (I only had a passing interest). Also, with all the superhero films out in the theatres: 'Fantastic Four' and 'Batman Begins' I have gained an interest in all superheroes from both Marvel and DC....(and other publishers)....and pretty much a bigger interest in comic books.

I recommend this book. It's a quick read, and very enjoyable.

I also recommend JLA: Year One, which kicks off the relationship between The Flash aka Barry Allen and Green Lantern aka Hal Jordan....

5-0 out of 5 stars I Wished That This Story Would Go On FOREVER!!!
Mark Waid and Barry Kitson made me a believer in the Silver Age characters with this book. I've always been a Golden Age and Modern Age comic fan. For some reason or other, I'd never gotten around to reading the Silver Age John Broome creations (namely, Hal Jordan's Green Lantern and Barry Allen's Flash). This book changed all that.

Mark Waid understands these characters very well. And he writes their unlikely friendship very well indeed - even surpassing, in some ways, the Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams pairing of Green Lantern with Green Arrow in the 1970s. For the guest-stars, we have the Golden Age Flash (Jay Garrick) and Green Lantern (Alan Scott) putting in an appearance to guide or "build a bridge" with their Silver Age counterparts. And it's always neat to see another Hard-Travelling Heroes tale (drawn eerily like Neal Adams by Tom Grindberg). Fan-fave villains, Sinestro and the Star Sapphire also appears, rounding up this collection of tales.

Finally, I love the way Waid sums up the characters' chemistry with each other : Hal admires the Flash's freedom and Barry's discipline. Barry admires the Green Lantern's discipline and Hal's freedom. They sort of complement each other in their dual identities and makes the pairing a lot richer. I wished this story never ended...

2-0 out of 5 stars Dull story telling and drab artwork combine for a snoozer.
Tremendously mediocre work. Spend the money on dinner instead, it's more memorable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mark Waid at his best
One reason old DC fans love Mark Waid so much is because of his real attention and devoted care for the company's old Silver Age icons, like the Hal Jordan Green lantern and the Barry Allen Flash. Both characters were killed off by the company years ago in favor of hipper new versions, but Waid shows what a mistake this was by showing enormous depths behind this old pair of Justice Leaguers. The cocky, skirtchasing Hal Jordan and the staid, reliable Barry Allen always seemed like the most unlikeliest of pairings, but Waid gives a plausible account for how two such dissimilar men could actually become the best of friends. The best story, by far, is the last, which analyzes the differences between Barry's utter devotion to his dead wife Iris and Hal's neurotic ongoing longtime relationship with his troubled boss Carol Ferris; it builds beautifully off of years of characterization and plotting by former FLASH and GREEN LANTERN scripters (in particular Cary bates and Steve Engelhart), and offers the return of one of most greatly missed Silver Age DC villains, Star Sapphire. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating ommissions
I've used several other QuickStart Guide titles in the past, so I trusted this one without seeing it in person.I was very frustrated in trying to use it as a reference, since MANY times it didn't include the pieces of info I needed. Instead of explaining what many options mean (like in the publishing dialog for example), it just lists them - just like the software does.I got the sense that the author didn't know what some things were or was rushing to get this done and wasn't as thorough as I'd expect. While it's a good basic overview of a lot of things, it's not great for looking up specifics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for quick learning
I had never worked with this program before and this book was a good reference to jumpstart into Captivate.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as useful as I thought it would be
This didn't cover the topics I wanted it to, but it may still work for you if you are learning to use Captivate. It is definitely easy to read and use, if that is your priority, but it didn't tell me much I didn't already know. I purchased this because I was running into some brick walls while using Captivate and the book was touted as containing some tricks and tips.Honestly, I think the software itself is restrictive, and it isn't the author's fault that they couldn't remedy Captivate's shortcomings.

I have been experimenting with Captivate for 3 months (not continuously) to create training programs for our software products.Lets face it, Captivate it isn't all that complicated. If you are competent enough to put together a Power Point presentation then you are competent enough to use Captivate. It is really a fantastic program to create demonstrations or training programs. The problem that I ran into, like many Macromedia programs, is that there are usually little tricks and features that are hidden in the program. This book really outlines not only the basics of Captivate but digs down a little more and explains these hidden features.I looked at several books for this program and some were just too basic, in fact most were just Crayola basic. If you are looking for a book to show you the all the different features of Captivate including creating and editing movies, exporting, creating basic or in-depth presentations then this is completely the book for you.Heck, the book even gets into exporting presentations to work on a PDA....what else do you need? Enjoy! ... Read more

Excerpt: Carolyn Jessop (born January 1, 1968) is a former Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints member who wrote Escape, an autobiographical account of her upbringing in the polygamist sect and later flight from that community. She is the cousin, by marriage, of Flora Jessop, another former FLDS member and advocate for abused children. Carolyn Jessop now lives in the Salt Lake City area with her children. On April 21, 2003, when Jessop was 35, she left her husband's family and the FLDS church, fleeing to a safehouse in Salt Lake City. Subsequently, she sued for custody of her children, and became "the first woman ever granted full custody of her children in a contested suit involving the FLDS." In 2007, she co-authored her book Escape with Laura Palmer and chronicled her life in the FLDS organization, her adulthood and disillusionment, and her eventual flight. It was published by the Broadway division of Random House. She followed its publication with a book tour. In 2008, actress Katherine Heigl announced she had signed to produce, and star in, a feature film based on the memoir. Jessop was born Carolyn Blackmore and raised by her parents in Hildale, Utah with her older sister and younger siblings. She is a sixth-generation descendant of a polygamous family, all of whom were faithful members of the FLDS church. Her father became a polygamist when he married his wife's niece when Carolyn was a child. Jessop describes her relationship to her parents as emotionally distant, with her father domineering her mother, and ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=14708761 ... Read more
