Editorial Review Product Description The old saying is wrong-winners do quit, and quitters do win.
Every new project (or job, or hobby, or company) starts out exciting and fun. Then it gets harder and less fun, until it hits a low point-really hard, and not much fun at all.
And then you find yourself asking if the goal is even worth the hassle. Maybe you're in a Dip-a temporary setback that will get better if you keep pushing. But maybe it's really a Cul-de-Sac, which will never get better, no matter how hard you try.
According to bestselling author Seth Godin, what really sets superstars apart from everyone else is the ability to escape dead ends quickly, while staying focused and motivated when it really counts.
Winners quit fast, quit often, and quit without guilt-until they commit to beating the right Dip for the right reasons. In fact, winners seek out the Dip. They realize that the bigger the barrier, the bigger the reward for getting past it. If you can become number one in your niche, you'll get more than your fair share of profits, glory, and long-term security.
Losers, on the other hand, fall into two basic traps. Either they fail to stick out the Dip-they get to the moment of truth and then give up-or they never even find the right Dip to conquer.
Whether you're a graphic designer, a sales rep, an athlete, or an aspiring CEO, this fun little book will help you figure out if you're in a Dip that's worthy of your time, effort, and talents. If you are, The Dip will inspire you to hang tough. If not, it will help you find the courage to quit-so you can be number one at something else.

Worthy concepts -but miss the obvious
After reading this little book and some of the reviews of Godin's other book "Linchpin" it seem to me that an obvious point is being missed. Who wouldn't want a bunch of exceptional people working for them in a business or factory. The problem is exceptional people by definition are few and far in between. And even if those kind of people were plentiful, there is not enough room at the top where these people aspire and companies want them.
Can these authors be overlooking such a simple point or are they just doing a lot of hand-waving and hope the proactive masses don't notice until they have bought the book. I hope it is the former.
Simply excellent
Seth has a profound ability to make sense of things. This book really puts things into perspective, especially when you're in "the dip" and wondering what to do next. Buy it sooner rather than later. The small price is such a magnificent investment in your future.
For when you reach that crossroads in life and business
How many of us have been stuck at that crossroads of not quite being sure whether to continue or whether to turn back? I know I have. I found Seth Godin's book a real inspiration because he has a very simple strategy for dealing with that question. He tells us to go forward to greatness where we know that we have the capacity to reach the top. Not everyone (or every business) does and if we push through 'the dip' we will emerge stronger and ahead of the competition. If we know we can't achieve that greatness, then better to turn back. This is such a simple but such a profound lesson that I find myself coming back to again and again - highly recommended!
Navigating the Stretch Between Starting and Mastery
Seth Grodin's "The Dip" focuses on the dry patches that emerge when one is pursuing a valuable and meaningful objective. All super successful people from Richard Branson to Blessed Mother Teresa have faced the Dip and how they embraced it separated them from all other mortals. It is
* The long slog between starting and mastery. (But actually it is a shortcut because it gets you were you are going faster than any other path.)
* The difference between the easy "beginner" and the expert.
* The long stretch between beginner's luck and real accomplishment.
* The set of artificial screens set up to KEEP YOU OUT.
Life offers us an infinite number of life choices and once a choice has been made, there is excitement and hope then "The Dip." Scott Peck, MD, in his "The Road Less Traveled," addressed the dip in romantic relationships as one moves from the romantic to day-to-day living. The latter is less a feeling and more a decision, a commitment. This is equally true for careers, projects, exercise and diet, raising a family, and much more.
"Almost everything important in life is controlled by The Dip." It is the reason we are here and it is the obstacle that trips up most. Grodin's "The Dip" is a quick, insightful read that provides an in-depth look at the "The Dip" and how successful, the superstars of life, navigate it as this is where success happens.
