5-0 out of 5 stars The Sum of Craig's Fears
Moscow 5000 was the first of two books written by Craig Thomas under the pseudonym of David Grant. Though he didn't use his name, his style is certainly evident. Like his previous novel, Snow Falcon, Thomas uses a large cast of characters and a very involved plot, this time centered around the 1980 Olympics that were held in Moscow.

A group of Ukrainian Separatist radicals, who call themselves "Do pobachenya", (Ukrainian for goodbye), plan to set off an FAE bomb (Free Air Explosion device, or sometimes called Fuel Air Explosion weapon), and they plan to do it at the Moscow Olympics. Oleg Kazantsev and his KGB team try tracking down the group and have to deal with their smaller assauts on Moscow before they strike at the Olympics. Arkady Federenko is an Olympic athlete for the Soviet Union, but his sister is girlfriend to the leader of "Do pobachenya". And ex-British agent David Allardyce is sent to the Olympics under the cover of his real-life reporting carrer to help get out a Russian double agent, Anna Akhmerovna, who just happens to be the girlfriend of Captain Gennadi Leonov of the KGB.

There's a few other subplots, which probably makes this the Craig Thomas novel with the largest amount of characters, none of which are characters from Craig's previous novels or one's he would later re-use, which may be a reason why he pubished it under a pseudonym, although there is a subplot of a later book that mirrors one from here. In the end, despite having a very busy plot with a lot going on, this is actually a really great Craig Thomas novel. Definately worth a read.

2-0 out of 5 stars More Slandering of the Ukrainians
First of all let me make clear that I do not have the slightest sympathies for the Ukrainian nationalists of Bandera. In fact my own grandfather fought on the Soviet side in World War Two. But no Ukrainians would want to bomb the Moscow olympics as many fellow Ukrainians would be killed too. The UPA (ukranian peoples army) contrary to popular belief was a fighting unit not a terrorist one as author makes you believe. It is still a good book with suspense and intrigue but as fellow reviewer said, the use of Islamic or neo-Nazi thugs instead of Ukrainian ones would be better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Terror at the Olympics
David Grant is the pseudonym of a British author whose suspense novels are known for attention to detail and authenticity.Recent world events compelled me to reread this book which has languished in my library for more than 20 years. The setting is the XXll Olympiad, Moscow, 1980; the scenario one horribly relevant today.Terrorists have planted a devastating bomb in the Olympic Stadium, crowded with spectators for the ultimate althletic competition, the "Moscow 5000".The story is thrilling. We follow the runners as they train and compete for the Gold. And we follow the CIA and KGB agents united for the most crucial race of all, to find and difuse the bomb before thousands are killed. The plot is plausable enough for a modern nightmare. The only thing which smacks of improbability: the identity of the terrorists. In Grant's novel, Ukrainian Nationalists of the Narodny-Trudovoy Soyuz concoct the scheme of destruction. This is far-fetched, even for those Soviet times, during which Ukraine strugged under Communist oppression.During the WWll era, the Banderovtsi had alligned itself opportunistically with the Nazis, to fight against Polish and Russian occupiers of Ukraine. But that its successors slaughter unsuspecting sports spectators, including numerous innocent foreigners, is too great a stretch of the imagination.Either then or now.The author chose his villains on the basis of Banderovtsi persecution of the Jews, because religious (rather than political) zealotry would motivate such a heinous act.If this long out-of-print novel were republished -- and it really should be! -- it would benefit by an update.al-Qaeda allied Islamist fanatics, such as those connected with attrocity in New York, Moscow, and of course the Munich Olympics, would provide more realism for readers already reeling from international terrorist trauma.Or would that be too offensive for the anti-religious-defamation police? The film, "The Sum of All Fear", which contained a similar storyline to "Moscow 5000" had to be rewritten (pre 911 PC, obviously) with neo-Nazi instead of religious terrorists.Ironic, isn't it? ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Pricey Brick
Well,

I bought the original Encyclopaedia of NMR (8 volumes) several years ago and I found it
an excellent value for the money (It was pricey then, it's exorbitant now). But, I am
a professional physicist who specializes in NMR, so, it was a necessity, sort of...

The update (which I decided to buy after several years of hesitation) in the form of Volume 9,
is outrageously expensive and offers very little value for that money. I mean, it covers topics
so esoteric that I, a trained professional in this field, find them out of my radar screen; hands
down, each of the entries may interest a whopping group of maybe 100 people worldwide, and these groups do not overlap.

So now, I proudly say I have a compelete Encyclopaedia of NMR. I use if often and I like it very much. But I doubt I will ever need to crack open the Volume 9.

4-0 out of 5 stars 200 key papers
This is only the first volume of a nine volume set. It is the overview of some 50 years of research. Reprints of what the editors have considered to be the most influential of 200 papers on the subject. The original source documents. Invaluable to students of science and history.

All the key papers are here. For example, you can read Rudolf Mossbauer's own words on his research, for which he won the Nobel in record time - just a few years after his papers were published.

Worthy of belonging in a good scientific library. ... Read more

Customer Reviews (1)

3-0 out of 5 stars Welcomed, but Provincial.
Cronenberg is a director worthy of extended scholarly discussion, and as such Grant's collection of seven essays and an interview with Cronenberg is a welcomed entry.Unfortunately, the assortment is uneven, often too narrowly focused, and includes too few essays of import to necessitate reading in its entirety. While the variety of methodological approaches is rather interesting, the utility of the majority of the essays is limited, hardly explaining the film (or films) that the author attempts to unravel, and doing little to explain science fiction/horror films or Cronenberg's oeuvre.
Parveen Adams's "Death Drive", a Lacanian analysis of Crash (1996), is the most interesting, and well written, of the essays in the collection that directly engage Cronenberg's work.Adams attempts to unravel the stylistic complexity of Crash and to align Cronenberg's directorial effects with the narrative estrangement at the heart of the film. While Adams's study is limited to only Crash, she does see beyond the film, linking Cronenberg's visual manipulations in the film to Luc Besson's earlier work, and, by implication, to work outside of Cronenberg's.Engaging and interesting for its use of Lacan and Cronenberg, Adams's essay is worth considering for any film scholar.
Most interesting of the essays is Andrew Klevan's "The Mysterious Disappearance of Style: Some Critical Notes About the Writing on Dead Ringers", which chides both specific film scholars, and film scholarship as a field for its lack of consideration of a variety of filmic elements other than simply narrative. While inflammatory, Klevan's analysis of contemporary scholarship is a vital critical entry, acting as repudiation of the earlier essays in the collection (Klevan is placed last, directly before the interview with Cronenberg, in which Cronenberg also chides scholars for their lack of critical scope).Grant's editorial introduction spends too much space attempting to find faults in Klevan's argument, but his defense is too much a protest, and in both the introduction and Grant's contribution to the collection it is quite clear what Klevan is attacking: Scholars who are too concerned with their own scholastic exercises to actually attempt to engage the text at all, instead building a fortification of "theories" to hide ignorance behind. As such, Klevan's contribution should be required reading for every film scholar.
The interview with Cronenberg is rather interesting, more for his concerns about the uses of scholarship than for his biographical revelations. The majority of the interview is spent considering critiques of his films, as well as arguing against attempts to understand his oeuvre through broad biographical or psychoanalytic means. Thus Cronenberg appears to be endorsing the methodological approaches embodied in the collection, which, with the exception of Grant, employ more contemporary theoretical modes.Otherwise, of interest in the interview is Cronenberg's extension of his earlier discussion of the aesthetics embodied in his work and the response of the audience to the grotesque visions in his films, which he attributes more to the reception of the audience than to his directorial intent.
Finally, the collection is rather myopic in its cinematic interests: A predominant number of essays concern M. Butterfly (1993) and Dead Ringers (1988). Crash and The Fly (1986) are also widely considered (and a number of the essays insist on redundantly summarizing identical scenes); eXistenZ (1999) is largely ignored, as are The Dead Zone (1983), Videodrome (1982), and Scanners (1981), with many of Cronenberg's earlier, more horrific and science fictional works mentioned only in passing. The collection also includes an extensive filmography and selected bibliography of Cronenberg criticism and reviews, which should prove useful for future studies, which will hopefully learn from the mistakes of The Modern Fantastic. ... Product Description
For centuries soldiers and woodsmen have armed themselves with the tomahawk, and for good reason. Its design is simple but extremely effective at both close and throwing ranges; it does double duty as a close-quarters weapon and a field tool, great for dispatching attackers and busting through doors; and it is durable, easily repaired and readily available without a permit or license. Tomahawks: Traditional to Tactical traces the evolution of the tomahawk as a tactical weapon. Though author David Grant examines historical and traditional designs, his primary focus is on the tactical tomahawks of today. He uses his firsthand knowledge of hawks to analyze the contributions of tactical pioneer Peter LaGana, creator of the legendary Vietnam Tomahawk, as well as those of the best modern masters, including Wally Hayes, J. Neilson, Daniel Winkler and Kevin McClung, among others. Dozens of photographs showcase an amazing variety of tomahawk styles, including those offerings from American Tomahawk Company, Bear Mountain Tomahawks, Graham Brothers Knives, Ranger Knives and RMJ Forge. An instructive chapter on choosing the best tomahawk for your needs and contact information for designers and manufacturers round out this indispensable guide to the modern tactical tomahawk. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money...
Gives a short history of the Tomahawk and Great photos and information on modern makers. Some of which are still on the market and others that have turned into collectibles. If your interested in Tomahawks its a must get book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This book is a huge disappointment. It includes about ten pages dedicated to traditional tomahawks, two how which discuss the history of the weapon. The rest of the "book" focuses on modern hawks. Each page is a short summary and black & white photo of tomahawks from specific modern manufacturers. This is basically a buyers guide, without prices or contact information, and fails to include any meaningful information. I think this might be one of the worst books on tomahawks ever printed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superbly presented and enthusiastically recommended addition
The tomahawk is one of the oldest weapons known to man. It appears in one form or another in virtually every culture around the world because it is exceptionally effective in hand-to-hand combat and can be thrown as a missile weapon. A durable field tool, the tomahawk was also good for breaking through barriers like doors and windows, as well as dispatching captives and wounded enemies. In "Tomahawks: Traditional To Tactical", weapons expert David Grant informatively traces the history of this readily available and easily repaired hand weapons, examines historical and traditional tomahawk designs, and analyses the contributions to the development and use of the tomahawk by such luminaries as Peter LaGana (creator of the legendary Vietnam Tomahawk) and modern masters of the weapon like Wally Hayes, J. Neilson, Daniel Winkler, Kevin McClung, and others. Surveying a variety of tomahawk styles from historical sources as well as contemporary manufacturers, "Tomahawks" features dozens of photographs enhancing the thoroughly 'reader friendly' text. Of special note is the chapter on how to choose the best tomahawk for one's personal needs, as well as contact information for tomahawk designers and manufacturers. "Tomahawks" is a superbly presented and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library reference collections. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
Fifteen Seconds is a photo journal that commemorates the 1989 earthquake. The book is a series of pictures, quotes and captions that are put together to show the reader how terribly destructive the 1989 San Francisco earthquake really was. This is a book definitely worth reading. It gives the reader a good view of what happened on October 17, 1989.If you want detailed information in written form, this is not a book to read. If you enjoy learning through art and photographs, this book will be a fun and interesting read.
With photographs, quotes, and captions this book tries to show you how it might seem if you were in the position of one of the many victims of the earthquake. Fifteen Seconds has many quotes that give you even more of a feel for how the victims viewed their situations and how this disaster affected so many lives of so many innocent people.
For example on page 35 a Santa Cruz resident compared the earthquake to her experience in a hurricane and tornado. She found the earthquake to be much worse.

The book sends a message through every single picture. Each picture is individual and has its own significance in its own way. The book Fifteen Seconds starts out with pictures of the great World Series game that was disrupted by the tremendous tremble. It also features a large section on the Marina District fire. Damage to the the Bay Bridge is included as well as the memorial services after the quake.
Even though all of the pictures are still without movement, as I read this book it was almost like I was reliving the great catastrophe of 1989. I could just feel the ground shaking below my feet and I could watch as the Marina fire started to burn. I could just imagine the tears streaming down my neighbor's face as if I were at the memorial service for a loved one who had died.Every picture is worth a thousand words.
One of the pictures that made the biggest impression on me is a picture of I-880. The picture on page 18 and 19 of the bookgave me a good idea of how destructive this quake really was. In the picture there is a long stretch of highwaywhich at one point used to be straight. In the picture the highway is twisted and turned and formed into an almost waterwave like shape. There is smoke rising from the newly formed wave of cementand the caption read simply enough:
"Smoke rises from the mangled top span of I-880 in Oakland minutes after it collapsed, killing forty two people"
That small little note on the bottom of page 18 sums up the picture in what I thought just the best way possible. It tells me what I need to know and lets the picture tell the rest of the story as my imagination carried me away. There is also a quote on that page that read like this:
"I said to myself ` Lord don't let this span collapse,' and just about that time the span collapsed" Dave Rieman
That small quote tells whatever part of the story that had been left out. It tells me something about the people who had actually been there and actually experienced it. It brings me that last missing piece of the puzzle and really pulls me into the scene.

5-0 out of 5 stars Was there
I was in 7th grade in Aptos, CA when the Loma Prieta earthquake hit Northern California. I didn't remember a whole lot about that time, so I bought this book to refresh my memory. ... Read more
