Very Mediocre at Best
I read this and it does read quickly but it is SO NOT WORTHY of a "bestseller" status. But, I guess we know that books that sell a lot are almost never books that DESERVE to sell well. Ppl love "Little House". So did I, thus, why I bought it.

Ms. Gilbert lives in a very different world than most of the rest of us and cannot for the life of herself fathom anything different than the wealth and heavy influence she grew up in/around. We cant really fault her for this but I feel it is worth mentioning.

Boring life with the exception of ACTING.... OOH! "Big names"! All of whom are likely burning in Hell now.

I recommend this book ONLY to rent from a library. Not worth owning and once again, SO NOT deserving of being a "bestseller." Dont be misled by that, as if it means a book is GOOD! WRONG!

Its ok. She had an easy and and easily enviable life, I will say.
Far too much detail regarding her sinful relationship with the actor, Rob Lowe. Nowhere near enough info regarding her time on the TV show that made her famous!

OMG! What a self absorbed Tramp! Funny book though
I can't believe she has such an inflated ego and her language is awful for someone with money and fame.Goes to show it can't buy class!
She claims all these men were/are in love with her and personally I never thought her to be that attractive, she's actually vey plain looking even with her nose job and implants. Yes she was on one of the highest rated shows of the 1970's/80's but that had alot to do with Michael landon and Alison Arngrim and yes Laura was a big part of the show, but Melissa has had very little success after Little house ended, so she needs a Ego check! She puts down Valerie Harper who is an astounding actress who is now on Broadway and could carry a show on her own and for her to disrespect Valerie just shows what a disillusioned woman Melissa is.
I find this book very DESPERATE and SAD. Melissa is not all that as she likes to think. By today's standards she would have never made it as an actress with her limited acting talent and she's far from pretty or glamorous! She just used sex and alcohol to make up for her short comings and I think all these men she claims loved her just knew she was a cheap easy lay!

Great book
As a life-long fan of "Little House on the Prairie", I bought all three biographies as soon as they were published. Melissa Gilbert's was my favorite and answered so many questions I had about the series - and her. I highly recommend it.

Oh Puhleeze!
The only insight I gained into Melissa Gilbert's life is that she slept with anything that moved and let's not forget that every man, and I mean EVERY man, was madly in love with her!Why?We don't know!Whole fazes of her life are obliterated in this book, we don't know why she stopped talking to Michael Landonwho she owed her whole career to.Very disjointed book!Seems like the whole thing was a giant pat on the back to her, inbetween feeling sorry for herself.Blaming her birth parents for all her shortcomings!Read something else!

Avoid if You Want Lots of Little House Details; Gilbert is a Typical Product of Hollywood
As others have complained, this memoir has very little detail regarding the series Little House on the Prairie, despite the title "Prairie Tale."It probably should have had a different title, as I has hoping for Melissa's perspective on the show, the set, the characters, the actors - particularly Victor French and Michael Landon.

I was mildly disappointed in the language Ms. Gilbert uses throughout the book - I just don't think a woman with class needs to use the f-bomb to be "real."Contrasting this book with Maureen McCormick's autobiography, you find a lot less potty-mouth language even though I think Ms. McCormick was the "raunchier" of these two young ladies of Hollywood...yet, she told her story with more dignity and class, and I actually felt empathy for Maureen, and found her to be a likable person as presented on the pages of "Here's the Story."

That said, Prairie Tale was interesting enough for me to finish it, but for some reason, I closed the book having less respect for Ms. Gilbert than before I opened it.She seemed very self absorbed, whiny, and rather annoying throughout the entire book.Empathy was difficult for me to garner up on her behalf.Whether it's her writing style or personality I know not....I just found myself rolling my eyes at her "struggles."

If you are a fan of Little House on the Prairie and want to add to your Little House collection, I would pass on this book.If you are interested in Melissa Gilbert the person, apart from her role as Laura Ingalls Wilder, this will probably satisfy you.

Joe Eszterhas has created a genre
This book is as unique and entertaining as an 8 course meal served by a team of strippers in a library.

I like Bill Clinton MORE after reading this book and suspect that he is privately a Joe Eszterhas fan.And why not?Joe Eszterhas has more closet fans than any modern American writer.

No closet for me, thanks.Joe rules.

And a P.S. to Bill... America didn't hold the knobber against you.It's just that after JFK and Marilyn, we have pretty high standards.No hoggin' in the oval office, bro.If it had been Charlize Theron we would all have high fived you.Even Hillary would have understood.

Irresistably preposterous-- But know what you are in for
Eszterhas the book writer is more intriguing and ideosyncratic than Eszterhas the screen writer.Be prepared for a 60's counter culture apologia pro vita sua with interesting detours (such as a tribute to Barry Goldwater).

The book is ultimately a tour of America the Horny across the life span of baby boomers."Life span" is the proper term, since there is raunch enough for a lifetime.The organizing principle is that Bill Clinton is the avatar for the sexual acting out of the rock and roll lifestyle.Clinton is not particularly revered here, although Hilary is portrayed as so cold (and maybe gay) that Bill had little choice.

There is a lot of malicious gossip here, but some is true.The challenge is distinguishing between gossip that is malicious and that which is false and malicious.

For all the astoundingly diverse sexual activity described, there is a clinical detachment.Eszterhas uses few words (save when quoting others) that the New York Times would not print.

Eszterhas narrates lots of the book and is not an especially skilled reader-- although the ring of authenticity he gives keeps it from being annoying.Ed Asner is a fine reader.

Be prepared for Eszterhas's substantial ego.

I tend to vote Republican but refuse to align myself with the Right Wing or Moral Majority. I'm the guy in the middle that the candidates are really after.I say that as any review on this book should be tempered by the politics of the reader.JE is an avowed Democrat with socialist leanings.Read his most recent book "American Animal" to verify this.So it was surprising as I read the first third of this book that after an initial bow to Clinton as the Rock & Roll Prez, one of "us", he then seems to chastise him for his fatal flaws.This part of the book is interesting, engaging, but also somewhat repetitive.I still couldn't wait to read it my allotted hour a night.

But there is only so much you can talk about this subject and JE rambles on and on until he finally manages to really offend me.How?Well, I just finished his most recent book, "American Animal" an autobiography which I immensely enjoyed.Full of Hollywood stories.But reading this, I see that JE has included many of the stories I enjoyed from his autobiography in this political commentary/fantasy.So is he a writer with a message or is he just repeating his few stories to make a buck?

I don't know what to make of this book, thus my title.Did I enjoy some parts?Yes.Are there some interesting stories?Yes.But there is a lot of waste.It's like wandering thru a jungle with a machete looking for your trail.When you find it, it's worth the work.So maybe the only item I can add of interest came from reading this with some years of aging.JE takes on Arianna Huffington who he spends quite a bit of time describing her history to show what a bad person she is and how she climbed to the top while stepping on other people's faces.But would JE have included these chapters in this form if he had known that within a few years she would shift sides and now disavow her right wing leanings?I think not.

This is not a great book.But if you enjoy reading, maybe you will enjoy it.

Decent and Deplorable- in prose from the spheres.
This is the truth! I never read any other of these exposes and during the majority of the media coverage of the episode that led to Clinton's impeachment- I switched to the animal planet. After reading some reviews on Amazon, I bought this book and I'm glad I did."The Comeback Kid" takes plenty of flack from the author, but Eszterhas spares none.I like the names: The Big Kielbasa- Wilt Chamberlain, "The Bag Lady of Sleaze"- Lucienne Goldberg, the lady who got the story into the media,"Hilla the Hun," "The Night Creature"- Nixon- "The Manchurian Candidate"- McCain- "The Rat Woman,"- Linda Tripp, it goes on to the current president named, "The Crown Prince."The coarsest individual does have the funniest lines, i.e.LBJ- too much to repeat here. The few who seem to get off lightly, like Monica, and believe it or not- Barry Goldwater and Newsweek Magazine who had the story and never printed it.
Perhaps the most effective and distressing part of the book is when Eszterhas does a mini retrospective of all the things we didn't want to know,but did over the years, here are a few: Sen. Harkin blowing his nose on CNN without a handkerchief, Bush Sr. throwing up in China, Buchanon saying "Congress is an Israeli occupied territory," Bob Dylan and Elizabeth T., LBJ turning to the side and taking a whizz at an outdoor press conference, Nixon and Kissinger kneeling together and praying, Spiro Agnew, "If you've seen one city slum you've seen them all," Michael Jackson and his chimp, David Bowie and Mick Jagger. Eszterhas obviously knows more and remembers more than is probably good for him, but his prose is stunning as is the manner by which he weaves the book together- even with some fiction.The author was the screenwriter for Fatal Attraction and had a relationship with Sharon Stone- who also takes some upper cuts and was rumored to have been intimate with Clinton as well. I definitely recommend reading this- for the humor and frankly, The gossip is completely consuming.

MUCH more than smutty tell-all
What a memorable and highly rewarding read.This book is much more than the sum of it's salacious and often repugnant contents; it's also a lecture on morality and a history lesson as well.I don't see how someone who reads this book can be derisive regarding the interlacing of fiction or the sheer amount of sordid detail.Given Eszerhas' talent for script writing and keen interest for the underbelly of the American society, how his book is put together should be no surprise.It's certainly not a novel or a bucket of heresay poo.
I am one who is generally both revolted and amused by the tabloids, and shows like Entertainment Television.But I could not put this book down.The book is informative and revealing, and I found myself lauging out loud and cringing, often while reading the same paragraph.I particularly enjoyed the moments where Eszterhas reflects on his own life; it's probably the most engaging aspect of the book.Expecting to find a smutty and over the top tell-all, I found something rich in intelligent, values-based writing. ... Great classic for children
I first read the abridged version of Anne of Green Gables from my school library as a kid. I read it because I really liked the summary given at the back. But after sometime I forgot all about it. When my sister bought the unabridged version of this book I started reading this book with a renewed interest and greater understanding about the plot and character.
Marilla and Mathew have lived in the Green Gables for as long as most of the people of Avonlea remember. Marilla persuades Mathew to send for a boy from the orphanage to help in their farm. But they are surprised when a talkative 12 year old girl with an overactive imagination arrives instead of the boy they had sent for. Red-headed Anne with her hot temper and romantic ideas causes havoc in the peaceful society of Avonlea. But with her jovial and good nature she soon wins over the practical minded people of Avonlea.
Anne ,the protagonist of the book has an overactive imagination which get her into scrapes many a time. She loves romantic namesand instantly flares up if any one teases her about her hair. She is headstrong and mostly jumps into things without thinking twice. Though she is liable to get into trouble but she does try to get out of them by telling lies.
Marilla, who has no experience in bringing up children,is always brisk in her mannerisms and is practical minded.
Mathew is the shy and introvert brother of Marilla. Though he lives in mortal fear of young girls he develops an instant likeness for Anne. Mathew though rarely goes against Marilla's wishes is ever ready to twist some rules for Anne's happiness. He is a hard working man and is happy to handle the farm on his own. He has an unwavering belief in Anne.
I think Anne as a character reminded me a lot of myself as a kid, with an unecessarily overeactive imagination.Though the book starts with the right speed but by the end of the book it becomes a little too fast, so much so that the reader tends to lose the track of time in the book. Like most books it's not the only the story which makes a book readable but also how the story is told. Montgomery takes a simple story of the everyday life a young orphan girl and manages to win the heart of the readers. The simple yet humorous way the writer tells the story keep the reader interested in story right through the book. Though there are other books on similar themes like the Anne of Green Gables but this book is unique in itself. While reading the book the reader would never feel as if they had read something like this before. The author stuck to the story right through the book. The storyline is not lost anywhere in between the book. Maybe that's what is special about this book- the author manages to tell such a simple story without once wavering from the plot. The readers would never feel that any character is bland. The author has defined all characters of the book so finely that the reader can almost imagine how a characters looks, walks or talks. The author has accomplished to make her characters breathe for the readers. All characters have their interesting points from the nosey Rachel Lynde to the practical Marilla.
Something that I didn't like about this book is that the author made the main character a little too perfect. Anne seems to be liked by most of the characters in the books which seems a little too unrealistic as even the best of people are not liked by many. Indeed the author has shown all most all of her characters as saintly people . But I recommend the people to read this book at least once.
What I liked best in the book was the innocence of the main protagonist of the book. Though she is gets into a lot of scrapes but she never intentionally breaks the rules. The humorous yet fascinating way in which the author has described the antics of Anne won the book for me. Anne has managed to win my heart by her romantic ideas and far fetched imagination.

I would like to recommend it to all children over the age of eleven and to all adults who want to refresh their childhood memories. It is a really good book for light reading. The story connects with all of at one point or the other. Be it the regular scrapes we got into when we were children or the absurd ideas we had about various things. Mrs Lynde could remind the readers of their nosey yet good natured neighbour. This book teaches us take pleasure in simple things in life and to put people before riches.
Some other similar books I recommend are the Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and What Katy Did by Susan Coolidge. Though these two books are different from the Anne of Green Gables in many respects but they all relate to the everyday lives of young girls. While Little Women is about the five March sisters who learn to live happily even in poverty while their father has gone off to the war, What Katy Did is about the tomboyish twelve year old Katy Carr who learns to happily face the adversities of life. Those who liked this book may also like to read the other parts of the book which follows Anne's story in various stages of her life. Though the other books are too are good but my firm favourite is the Anne series. Maybe this is so that I am a bit partial towards books written with humour in it.

Anne of Green Gables
I like all of the Anne books I have read so far, my least being Rainbow Valley. I like Anne's humor - chatty and and peppy- and I like most of the characters. I give the entire series four stars. I just finished House of Dreams, and it may have been my favorite in all. I really like Anne of Green Gables.

Review of Anne of Green Gables
Anne of Green Gables is the story that comes to mind when I think about the books I read alone as a child.

There are very few in the readers world that are unfamiliar with this story. The movies made were fantastic and Megan Follows the perfect choice to play Anne with an E, but nothing can compare to the original story.

I picked up Anne of Green Gables because I was challenged on Twitter to pick up a book I loved and read it, instead of picking up a book I should be reading. I read half of the book in a single evening, devouring it with the same satisfaction that I would my mom's potato salad or my grandmothers Texas cake.

My favorite scene in the book is when Anne, just after her performance at White Sands, speaks to the girls and talks about how she likes being just Anne of Green Gables. I'm a person who loves and cherishes home and that, I think, is why I love this book so much. Anne understood me as a child, a teenager and as an adult. She was my literary kindred spirit, as I'm sure she was countless others as well.

One last thing before I wrap this sentimental review up. I still own the 1983 Junior Illustrated Edition of Anne of Green Gables. This is the only book I've read the story in. It's spine is broken and some of the pages are loose and stained with fingerprints or sustained water damage. The illustrations inspire memories of their own, laying on the top bunk of the bunk bed in my grandparents basement, sitting on the big, green chair in my parents living room, eating a sandwich at the battered, scuffed dining table. Each illustration felt like an old friend had emerged from the shadows of my memory and waved hello, and just like that, once again, Anne has inspired my dramatic imagination to flare again.

A Timeless Classic!
Anne of Green Gables is one of my all-time favorite books! I'm re-visiting some old classics from my youth this summer, and L.M. Montgomery's beautiful series about the "Anne girl" is at the top of my list. The story is well-known and loved - purely by mistake, plucky orphan Anne Shirley comes to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. They wanted a boy to help with the farm work, but what they got was a charmingly verbose little girl who quickly makes a place for herself in their lives. Anne gets into so much trouble that it would be nearly impossible to chronicle in a review without retelling the whole story, so suffice it to say that she is definitely the queen of the caper!

Anne Shirley is wonderfully relatable - she is a smart and creative girl, full of spirit and amazingly introspective for someone her age. Anne is a unique and entertaining character in a novel full of interesting characters - I want to be Anne Shirley when I grow up! From Marilla and Matthew to their curmudgeonly neighbor Rachel Lynde, Montgomery created a fascinating cast of characters that are impossible to forget.

L.M. Montgomery crafted a true masterpiece with Anne of Green Gables. The story is timeless and the setting is meticulously illustrated with a graceful use of words and phrases. The writing is simply delightful - there is true magic between the covers of this book!

Oh, what a perfect novel!
This book will always stand out in my memory as the first book that ever made me cry - and while hundreds of other books have brought me to tears since then, even in re-reading this book nothing makes me cry harder than this one! Re-reading this has given me such pleasure, that I think I will have to re-read the whole series! In fact, I don't know how far I ever made it in the series, I don't think I have read them all, to be honest. I am looking forward to this project! This book just fills me with such joy!
