Product Description

The #1 bestselling author of Once Upon a More Enlightened Time reads his Politically Correct holiday gift.

Holiday tales have long delighted and entertained us, but until now they've always been burdened with society's skewed values and mores. Stories that reinforce the stifling class system (Dickens' A Christmas Carol), legitimize the stereotype of a merry, overweight patriarchal oppressor (Santa Claus in The Night Before Christmas) and justify the domestication and subjugation of wild animals (Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer) abound in the literature and lore of this season.

Now James Finn Garner has stepped in to revise and improve these familiar tales to free our social consciousness from the ghost of prejudice past. From the newly revised "Twas the Night Before Solstice" to "Rudolph the Nasally Empowered Reindeer," these stories rekindle the true holiday spirit and redefine the idea of "good will to all men" to include womyn, pre-adults and companion animals as well.

Yes, the international bestselling author of Politically Correct Bedtime Stories and Once Upon a More Enlightened Time is back again, to offer a holiday gift that will fit all sizes, welcome all persuasions and nonpersuasions, and be treasured for politically correct generations to come. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars More of the same and not enough of it
PC Holiday Stories has JF Garner applying his standard palette of ultra-far-left lampooning to the topic of Holiday tales. He tackles (or should I say pokes) such venerable classics as Moore's "The Night Before Christmas," "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer," "Frosty the Snowman" and Dickens' "A Christmas Story," but not enough to do much damage. Garner even seems to break character by criticizing the very position from which he purports to write. Having St. Nick tell the eco-friendly parents in "Twas the Night" to "Get over themselves" was hardly the way a hyper-PC writer would have ended the tale. The stories are flat and almost predictable. The endings are lame and obvious targets of satire skitter by, unpummelled. It's telling that Garner left most of the religious tales alone. WHile one would not expect a satirical look at the doings in Bethlehem (Monty Python covered this quite well) how about "The Little Drummer Boy?" It seems that after his initial success with PC Bedtime stories, Garner is just playing it safe and phoning in his work.

The adaptation of the Scrooge story was especially tiresome and borrowed more that a little language from the original. Characters and situations received wan facelifts. Scrooge's last spirit, for instance was an inarticulate punker (so far so good), that Garner didn't do much with. This comes across less as "homage" than as laziness. Given the plethora of existing Scrooge rip-offs and parodies, Garner's version was rather pale.

Get this for a stocking stuffer if you must, but don't expect it to be the rollicking hit of the season.

2-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed "Bedtime Stories" much more.
I looked forward to this book, because I thought "Politically Correct Bedtime Stories" was so funny. This was disappointing. The Rudolph story was okay, and Frosty was okay too, but all in all, the book was a great step down from "Bedtime Stories." Mr. Garner seems to have lost some of his clever wit, and he spends way too much time on Ebenezer Scrooge. That story turns out dry and extremely dull, I muddled through that one, and because Mr. Garner takes such length with it, it turns out to be half of the book. Not funny this time, Mr. Garner. Sorry. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars truly funny
Garner takes some of the most beloved childrens stories and turns them into the most perfect polically correct stories possible by removing any possibly offensive thoughts. In doing so, he has turned the idea of political correctness on its ear.By making the story as politically correct as possible, Garner has shown how stupid political correctness truly is.This book is not for the pollitically correct, but for those who want to needle them.Garner used different spellings of women to wommon so there wouldn't be a reference to men with women. He even apologizes in his introduction for not being politically correct enough. This is truly funny and the politically correct will miss the forest for the trees.Highley reccomended.

This is a great series of stories. I bought these for my first daughter when she was still in the womb. We reaad them to her all the time before and after her birth. Now I want them for my niece and nephew. They are more for the adult than the child, but when they are a year and under you'll both love them.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book is notfor children
this book is for adults, it has adult humor. The reason you found it too graphic to read to your kids is because it is not for them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for the masses.
I found this book to be a little to graffic to read to my children. My kids are coming to the age where they are ready for fairy tales, but I don't think that I want them to learn about such topics before they are drinking out of cups without lids on them. If James Finn Garner intended this book for children rather than a mens bathroom at a truck stop, then he intends to raise his children in a different manner than my wife and I. Some day my children will be ready to learn about sexuality and the humor behind it, but I think when that day comes they will be reading beyond the three little pigs and little red riding hood.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very funny book
This book by James Finn Garner twists fairy tales to drop dead laughers. The new stories are now free of all cruel and sexist remarks and makes it all seem so natural it's funny. I highly recomend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars political satire
My favorite part of these titles is in the first book the story of the 3 little pigs and in the second, the alphabet soup.

This is tongue in cheek satire at it's finest. ... Read more

Product Description
A whimsical adaptation of classic fairy tales and bedtime stories removes all kinds of bias and objective language from such traditional tales as ""Chicken Little,"" ""Rapunzel,"" ""The Three Little Pigs,"" ""Cinderella,"" and many others.Amazon.com Review
James Finn Garner has taken 12 time-tested tales and retoldthem with the newfound sensitivity of our times. Here's a snippet from"Little Red Riding Hood":

The wolf said, "You know, my dear, it isn't safe for a littlegirl to walk through these woods alone."

Red Riding Hood said, "I find your sexist remark offensive in theextreme, but I will ignore it because of your traditional status as anoutcast from society, the stress of which has caused you to developyour own, entirely valid, worldview. Now, if you'll excuse me, I mustbe on my way."

Leap into a fairy-tale world where trolls are "dirt-accomplished andodor-enhanced," witches are "kindness-impaired," and Cinderella wearsa gown "woven of silk stolen from unsuspecting silkworms."We canonly regret that Garner had to exclude "The Duckling That Was Judgedon Its Personal Merits and Not on Its Physical Appearance" for spacereasons. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!
I loved this book! Short, and easy reading. About 80 pages I think. It should have probably been named "Fairy Tales for Liberals," because that's what it was. "Women" was spelled "womyn," and if a man ever tried to rescue a woman, her response was, "I can take care of myself!" Also, the "bad guys" were called "kindness-impaired," and it was always because they were "a product of their circumstances." It's just so funny. I recommend it for anyone interested in political satire.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny stuff
In a world laden with political correctness to overall detriment of society, where we can no longer say anything without someone being offended, it was refreshing to stumble upon POLITICALLY CORRECT BEDTIME STORES by James Finn Garner.

I recently sponsored a book drive where my stores collected donated books and this happened to find its way into one of the boxes. It caught my eye and seemed it might not be completely appropriate for young readers and it does in fact contain a few mild curse words but nothing any public school attending child hasn't already heard, I made the decision to pull it from the book giveaway. After reading it and having several good belly laughs, I will be putting it back in the box for next years giveaway.

Garner basically pokes fun at how rediculous we have become by letting political correctness replace any form of what might be deemed offensive. And yes, some of those easily offended pc-types will certainly be offended by this book. To them I say, "Lighten up. Get over yourself. It's just a book making fun of people like you."

Bottom line, the book is funny. Take it for what it is. Leave the politically correct judgementalism at the door.

In search of an answer, James Finn Garner conducted anexhaustive and hilarious examination of nearly every source readilyavailable for predicting the future, including boiled tea leaves, crystal balls, and severed donkey heads. With plenty of wit and tongueplanted firmly in cheek, Garner seeks to uncover the universal truthsbehind crop circles, harmonic convergence, and channeling. 5-0 out of 5 stars Humor for the woo-fatigued skeptic
First off, is it so hard to take this as something other than Y2K humor? Given the continued survival of people like Deepak Chopra and Pat Robertson, and the general anti-intellectual climate of American life, this book didn't lose relevance when the lights failed to go out on 1/1/2000.

Garner's humor is quite dry and snarky, and admittedly that doesn't appeal to everyone. But I think he captures the attitude of a great many skeptics towards poorly thought out spiritual, pseudoscientific, and pseudohistorical writings and themes that, despite being unprovable or outright ridiculous, still inflame the thoughts of many a true believer. Essentially, Garner's work here presents it, not as the subject for serious debate that many of these ideas' promonents want to frame it as, but illogical garbage worthy only of mockery and ridicule. This offends some? So be it. We skeptics have as much right to informed mockery of these half-baked ideas as their proponents do to put them out there.

Garner does cover a lot of ground, too -- disguised behind Garner's mostly-fictional (and often hilariously inept) adventures are strident criticisms of pyramidiocy, Atlantean obsession, ersatz Native American spirituality (of the type practiced by people referred to by humorist Robert Lanham as Cherohonkees, fluffbunny paganism, and the ominous singlemindedness of Christian fundamentalism, culminating in a three-for-the-price-of-one skewering of media-whore preachers, talk radio, and gematria such as the Bible Code. Numerous sidebars mock the tortured logic of woo practitioners, including measuring out Yankee Stadium with an ever-diminishing hot dog, listing the centuries' many candidates for Antichrist, and shooting down false prophets left and right.

As long as people let themselves be ruled by argument from authority and wishful thinking, there will always be a need for critical thinking. In the same way as Martin Gardner's Fads and Fallacies is still relevant over half a century after its initial publication despite the disappearance of much of the woo it chronicles, Apocalypse Wow! retains its interest despite the turning over of the millennium because even as fads pass, the faulty thought process remains. Even if it is out of print, it's still worth grabbing a copy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wishing the end (of the book) was nigh
"Apocalypse Wow!" is James Finn Garner's take on all things eschatological. He promises a funny take on Nostradamus, Edgar Cayce, the Jehovah's Witnesses, and other who have found the need to predict the end of the world.

After his triumph with "Politically Correct Bedtime Stories," I was hoping for another Garner home run. What I got was a bunt single. The roughest going is Garner's style. It is appropriately snarky, but it's often hard to tell whether he is giving straight history, making a joke, or just making random (and therefore funny?) statements. At the very least, I hoped for a book that explored the foibles of human beings when faced with imminent cosmic catastrophe. What I got was a series of comical remarks without the context to make them funny or educational.

I'm disappointed. I found that I had to push myself to turn the pages. Also, the printing values -- especially the pages printed white on black or using script font -- render some text literally unreadable. Hence the 2 star rating.

3-0 out of 5 stars Take the Doomsday FinalExam
The author of Political Correct bedtime Stories this time analyses the world of doomsdayers from religious nuts to asteroid destroying prophesizors. Like the fairy tale books some of the stuff in here is really good and some is rather average. This book was written in 1997 so analysis of the fear of the new millennium is out of date.Anyway, take the Doomsday Final Exam, examine Nostradumuses predictions, learn what to do in case a Jehovah's witness visits.Learn about the crop circles the media did not tell us about, reincarnation and who the antichrist is.Lots of other stuff is in the book too.If you like to poke fun at things then this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not with a bang, but a snicker.
Okay, so the millenium has passed, but there are still some who say that apocalyptic doom is just around the corner.James Finn Garner has taken all this doom and gloom and dissected it with a satirist's wit, hopefully putting all your fears to rest.Imagine the skepticism of a James Randi combined with the irreverence of a Michael Moore as he tackles everything from the Bible to UFOs.Maybe now you'll be able to sleep at night.I recommend reading this with Stephen Jay Gould's QUESTIONING THE MILLENIUM.

2-0 out of 5 stars Simply quaint
Luckily, nothing momentous happened when the year 2000 came to be, and we can now crawl out from under rocks and out of bomb shelters and openly laugh at our now silly-seeming fears. Or maybe it's just James Garner. Aside from a few interesting gags and factoids, the humour of this Y2K spoof is muddled and repetitive. The chapters cover literally everything from divination to prophecy to Y2K preparations (not to mention the significance of the year MM to McDonalds Corporation), but I couldn't bring myself to anything bigger than a quaint smile.

This book is not for the devout believers. Do notice than in Garner's dictionary, the words "eschatological" and "scathological" are separated only by a single syllable. ... Read more

Macmillian Hardcover with 79 pgs., size: 5.3" x 7 1/4". Once upon a time, in the olden days, heavy-set middle-aged men would congregate in their elitist clubs, sit in overstuffed leather chairs, smoke air-choking cigars, and pitch story ideas and plots to each other. The stories were sexist, discriminatory, unfair, culturally biased, and in general demeaning to witches, animals, goblins, and fairies everywhere. Garner has taken it upon himself to enlighten and liberate these classic bedtime stories and retell them in a way that is much more in keeping with the society in which we live today. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lighthearted satirical commentary on today's PC movement
Politically Correct Bedtime Stories

I found, "Politically Correct Bedtime Stories", a very amusing commentary on our modern, "wossified", don't offend any political group, gender, race, creed, alternative lifestyle or anything else for that matter, (unless of course it happens to be of male Northern European origin). A good friend of mine gave me a copy knowing that I had just read and reviewed, "Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales", and said that I needed a brake from the serious reading, she was right. This was like a cool breeze of fresh humorous air on a hot solemn day. I can relate to Mr. Garner's plight of being , in his own words, "the descendant of dead white European males".

All and all a very amusing satirical look in the mirror. It's a good thing to be able to look at the absurdities of social life and be able to laugh at them. Otherwise you end up believing them. The only problem I have with the work is not the book itself but with the people who read it and say to themselves, "It's about time they redid these!".The scary thing is, those folks are out there.
Well done Mr. Garner, thanks for the laughs.
