Product Description
Winner of the 2005 FIELD Poetry Prize, Jean Gallagher's Stubborn teaches us new ways of seeing--medieval paintings, for instance--and new ways of thinking: about the infinite, about holiness and terror and vision and loss. Her command of her art is remarkable, and readers will not want to put down this book once they have started to encounter it. It shines with power and crackles with excitement. As poet Bruce Beasley has said, "Jean Gallagher majestically conducts a history of approaches to the sacred in Christian art, scripture, mysticism, theology. She rewrites the Bible as she re-sees the 'gravities, necessities, haphazard plots' behind the frozen sacramental moments of religious art." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A singularly powerful poetic reinterpretation of visual classics
An award-winning poet, Jean Gallagher presents Stubborn, a collection of free-verse poetry revolving about the author's intransigent affection for art and events, above and beyond their aesthetic or beautiful dimensions. Stubborn reaches beyond what the human eye gauges, and strives to express the co-mingling of the mundane and the divine, as well as the natural power of personal will. Each poem is directly inspired by a work of great art from the Medieval and Renaissance periods, many of which depict Biblical scenes. A singularly powerful poetic reinterpretation of visual classics. Self-Diagnosis (Last Supper): Lined up all my cells at the table and said: / one of you will. Which one which one not me: / little birds, the weight of the early elements, / falling off the high wire into / doubt's life-long, unresisting blue.

Product Description
This is the incredible story of the boy from Cork whose talent as a guitarist emerged at an early age. He began his musical career in the showband era but soon founded the rock band Taste. After leaving the band, Rory recorded his first solo album in 1971. It was the gateway to over twenty years of recording, playing live and collaborations with the Fureys, the Dubliners and many others. The tragic death of Rory Gallagher in 1995 at the age of 47 robbed Ireland of one of its finest musicians, an artist whose development closely mirrored that of Irish music in general. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Sad
Like others have stated the writer seemed to believe this was more about his story than Rory's. Sad and frustrating and leaves a lot to be desired.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not The Best
I agree with the other two lower rated reviews. The author does tend to dwell too much on the time he spent with Rory so it becomes more of a buddy story than a real biography. The lack of any detailed information about recording sessions, tours, and record releases is appalling absent. At most, the author devotes a paragraph or two covering Rory's LP's.I would've liked to have read much, much more about them and his tours in the US.This book is a waste of time for the serious fan of Rory or anybody else for that matter as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars An insult to Rory!
I can't believe just how bad this is. It is badly written, the photo's are blurred and you come away wondering if Rory is just a sideman to the author. There is almost nothing about Taste and you'd be forgiven for thinking that Rory was, in fact born in France. The book mentions several times some idiot who jammed with Rory as if anyone cares (lots of people jammed with Rory-you'd need a whole book to name them). Really important facts like what Rory ate(!) are sprinkled through the chapters and how Rory wanted to move to France(yeah, sure) and you come away feeling insulted for buying this tripe and making such a non-author some money and annoyed because Rory deserves better than this. I know, it's a cliche from an Englishman, but only a Frenchman could mess up an oppertunity to write about the greatest guitarist that ever lived.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth reading
I think Rory deserves better and I just hope his brother ends up writing the definitive biography because the Coghe book was downright horrible. I hope it remains out of print in its present form.

Coghe did not give the world the story of Rory Gallagher. He gave the world the story of Coghe and 'how he fluttered around the flame that was the light of Rory'. I came away from the book knowing nothing about Rory except that each of his remastered CDs has 2 'bonus tracks'. The book seems to be a moveable feast after the concerts. I couldn't care less what Rory ate; I wanted to know about his art. How did he write his songs? How did he structure the songs of the old Blues Masters? Why was he an apparent loner? What was he looking for?

His life and death deserve more than knowing that a note from Bob Dylan was by his side when he died. The book is nothing but a self-serving scrapbook of Jean-Noel Coghe. A true biographer would have mentioned in passing that he met Rory Gallagher- not include picture after picture of himself with Rory. What a pompous @#$! His insults to the Irish people were too much. I do not think he consulted any of the references that he mentions in the end of the book. The flowery prose was right up there with that of the National Enquirer. A Rory biography in the hands of Peter Guralnick ( Last Train to Memphis) or Robert Palmer (Deep Blues) would do justice, but not this 'stick and paste' job.

I hope to one day pay my respects at Rory's grave. He was a great artist and deserves better. I would've cut off my little finger to have seen him perform his art. I will be waiting for a better book. In the meantime, I slam this one on the fluttering star-struck moth of Coghe. May he hang his head in shame over his treatment of this man.

4-0 out of 5 stars How To Be A Decent Human Being And A Genius Guitar Player.
This book describes to me the kind of Human Being Rory Gallagher really was. There is information here that I certainly had never known about Rory, having been a fan all my life, and of course being a fellow Cork Man myself. It appears Roryhad attracted a lot of attention from other Rock Blues musicians like Muddy Waters,Albert Collins,Jerry Lee Lewis whom he did some live session work for on some of their recordings,Bob Dylan wanted his services and The Stones also had him play on one of their albums.John Lennon greatly admired Rory, and they were great accuaintences. There are great stories to read in this book, and it is a must for any Rory Gallagher fan.He had achieved almost everything in his 20s.Surely he had a whole lot more to contribute, unfortunately it was not to be.This is an exellent book for giving an insight into the kind of life and Person Rory Gallagher really was.Go out and get yourself a copy before its all sold out. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Wicca Bible
The Wicca Bible is jam packed with information. While this is normally good news, its writing style is some what lacking. because there is much to cover that some times it begins to sound more like an encyclopedia then anything else. But if you want to cover the basics without long drawn out in depth explanations this is your book. If you want to know the whys behind the scenes than this isn't the book for you. For me It was a great starting point for further study.

Product Description
Faith and Culture has become a field of crucial importance in recent years. Clashing Symbols breaks new ground in presenting a wide area of reflection on the relationship between faith and the powerful cultural contexts surrounding believers today. Michael Paul Gallagher introduces readers to the main insights, theories, and controversies being discussed by individuals and church bodies.

Early chapters discuss the many meanings of culture, then specifically religious responses to culture, focusing on Vatican II and resolutions from the World Council of Churches. Themes concerning modernity and postmodernity are explored in detail, especially from a religious point of view. The final four chapters deal with more pastoral themes: the challenges of inculturation, discernment, youth ministry and the outlines of a spirituality for today's culture.

Drawing on the work of some of the leading thinkers in the field, this clearly written work is a natural for specialists and academics. It will also be valuable for anyone who wishes to understand the increasing relevance of culture for theology and for religious commitment today. In addition, it will also help "ordinary" Christians to understand the realities and challenges of contemporary culture with wisdom, with confidence, and in the light of faith. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid pick for community library self-help collections
What seems obvious may not be. "Her Inspiration: Secrets to Help You Work Smart, Be Successful, and Have Fun" is a compilation of wisdom from hundreds of women worldwide, offering intelligent and simple advice for everyday life. From dealing with one's job to one's family to just life in general, the advice is wide-ranging and invaluable to readers of any age, male or female. A solid pick for community library self-help collections.

4-0 out of 5 stars One Word:Inspiring
Her Inspiration is the companion book to the highly successful Her P.O.V. planner series from Franklin Covey. The advice in this book is geared to get you going, give you advice, make you believe in your ability-and support you when needed, as needed. In a word: INSPIRE.

"Wisdom, thy name is woman," author BJ Gallagher wrote in the Foreword to rightfully start this collection of wit and wisdom from women.

Each of the nine chapters use quips and quotes to help you find secrets to your personal satisfaction and success. Each chapter begin with two pages of wisdom, followed by about 60 sayings from famous, infamous and anonymous women (anonymous was always a woman, don't you think?).

The chapters range from this sampling: "Be Inspired to Achieve," "Secrets of Highly Successful Women," "Give Yourself a Break," "Indulge Yourself," "Women Can Do Anything"--and thoughts in between.

My book has about 20 little stickies marking certain pages. It was fun to learn and be reminded who said certain quotes that are bantered about by speakers and writers. Was it Margaret Thatcher or Madonna? Was it Helen Keller of Janis Joplin?

I'll end with one of my favorite quotes by Pat Guritz: "There is a big difference between seeing an opportunity and seizing an opportunity."

This is Mina Parker's third book that follows Half Full and Mother is a Verb.

This would make a great gift book and certain a ready resource on your own bookshelf.

A Modern Mystic Speaks

Christina Gallagher, a humble County Mayo housewife, is a prophetic figure for one times. She speaks about the warnings she has received from the Virgin Mary and of the divine wrath to come. She exhorts all to repent, to pray, to do penance, and to trust profoundly in God's mercy.

Apparitions and visions are a part of the history of the Catholic Church, Marian apparitions were reported as early as the first century, and there have beensightings at Fatima, Portugal: Lourdes, France, and Mediugoric, Yugoslavia, which have transformed these locations into centers for religions pilgrimages. While more than 300 apparitions have been reported from around the world in this century. Christina Gallagher's experience has been singular. Beginning with her first vision of Jesus Christ in 1985 and of the Virgin Mary in 1988, Christina has received messages from Marry, Jasus, and various saints. Christina has been marked by the stigmata -- the wounds of Christ -- and has suffered greatly as a messenger of God. This book is the account of the revelation that God wishes to give the world through Christina Gallagher.

Christina's fascinating experiences have included vivid visions of Heaven and Hell; encounters with angels, the Devil, and demons; and warnings about war and mass destruction and the coming of the Antichrist. The Sorrow, the Sacrifice, and the Triumph is, above all, an eloquent plea for the renewal of faith and the attainment of peace. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Truth is Stranger than Fiction...
A friend lent me his book, he said I would not be able to put it down, and I couldn't. What courage it must take to have apparitions and visions of God, Jesus, Mary and many Saints, plus Heaven and Hell?! Yet, to be belittled by the press, made fun of by others and to be treated at best..as weird. May God's Blessings always be upon Christina Gallagher and upon all of us, especially if we do not have the faith it takes to believe.

5-0 out of 5 stars I think it is the truth because only the truth can come from
I have read the book and think it is excellent. Iam a 25 year old male and I have visited the House of Prayer in Achill Co.Mayo, the ''HOUSE OF TRUTH" set up by Christina. A year ago I wouldn't have taken any heedof Our Lady's messages but having been to the "HOUSE OF PRAYER"my whole life has changed!Christina is a sincere, genuine, loving, warmand saintly woman who has only been trying to do what Our Lady has askedher to do. I think it is terrible that this wonderful person has receivedso much rejection from the Irish people. I have met with Christina on anumber of occasions. She speaks the TRUTH and people have just got tolisten to her messages from heaven before it is too late!Iwas down inthe House of Prayer last weekend (12th of November) and Christina's messagewas very strong! Her most recent message from Our Lady tells us thatthis millenium or year of the millenium will see the world and Irelandbrought to it's knees!Christina warns us of two countries in the worldjoining forces and spreading their errors throughout the entire world. Whenthis happens so much suffering will come about. Christina pleaded with uslast Saturday not to wait for the millenium to change our lives. Shestrongly says CHANGE YOUR LIVES NOW! ,while there is still time. We wereasked to spread this very important message. So, whoever reads my reviewplease take heed of this very serious message and tell as many people asyou possibly can. If people are able to get to the "House ofPrayer" in Achill Sound Co. Mayo please go as if you are in a state ofgrace you will receive the seal of the BLOOD OF JESUS,a very special sealfor the times we are living in,which is of course the apocalypse. Product Description
The language of faith stands in the way of faith. This is the startling and refreshing message of popular author Michael Paul Gallagher in this book. Too often, the Christian message is described in language that is tired and moralistic to many, especially the young. The result is that religion becomes a "turn off." In imitation of Jesus, to reach all, and youth in particular, faith needs to be conveyed through the language of storytelling and dialogue.

Highlights:

· inventive and surprising.
· uses stories, allusions to novels and films, and imaginary dialogues between, for example, Jane Austen and D. H. Lawrence, Shakespeare and Oscar Romero, to show how faith can be found in ordinary situations.
· appeals to a wide, especially young, audience.
· a novel addition to Jesus scholarship. ... Read more

Product Description
Was Robert E. Lee a gifted soldier whose only weaknesses lay in the depth of his loyalty to his troops, affection for his lieutenants, and dedication to the cause of the Confederacy? Or was he an ineffective leader and poor tactician whose reputation was drastically inflated by early biographers and Lost Cause apologists? These divergent characterizations represent the poles between which scholarly and popular opinion on Lee has swung over time. Now, in eight essays, Gary Gallagher offers his own refined thinking on Lee, exploring the relationship between Lee's operations and Confederate morale, the quality of his generalship, and the question of how best to handle his legacy in light of the many distortions that grew out of Lost Cause historiography.

Using a host of contemporary sources, Gallagher demonstrates the remarkable faith that soldiers and citizens maintained in Lee's leadership even after his army's fortunes had begun to erode. Gallagher also engages aspects of the Lee myth with an eye toward how admirers have insisted that their hero's faults as a general represented exaggerations of his personal virtues. Finally, Gallagher considers whether it is useful—or desirable—to separate legitimate Lost Cause arguments from the transparently false ones relating to slavery and secession. ... Read more

Customer Reviews (2)

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding view of Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia
This book is a collection of Gallagher's essays published elsewhere. In this format however, they take on an added dimension and explaination of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and its commander, Robert E Lee.
Gallagher begins by examining Lee's Maryland campaign, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg and the army's campaigns in 1864. His conclusions on the Battle of Gettysburg and its effects on the Confederate home front are particularly interesting. He concludes that the battle was not the overwhelming defeat to the Army of Northern Virginia and the Confederate home front that it would later be portayed as by historians. He makes the argument that the loss of Vicksburg was seen as a vastly bigger loss and Gettysburg was more seen as a small defeat or even a victory because of Meade's failure to chase the Confederates in retreat.
Gallagher also includes an interesting essay evaluating the claims of some historians that Lee was not fighting a modern war with modern tactics and if he had done so, the Confederacy would have been better off. He ably demonstrates that indeed Lee did understand the difference in technology such as the minie ball and its impact on strategy and tactics.
However, the best essay is Gallagher's essay on the Lost Cause "myth". Gallagher explains that many of the claims that were later associated only with Lost Cause historians such as Jubal Early or Douglass Southall Freeman, were actually developed during the war and immediately following the war prior to any claims made by Early and others. Thus some of the "myths" such as the overwhelming numerical superiority of the Union as part of the central cause of the Confederacy's defeat, is actually true. He draws the wonderful and correct conclusion that to dismiss the Lost Cause myths in their entirety does a major disservice to the historical profession and that discussing those Lost Cause claims that do have a basis in fact is not in fact giving any legitimacy to any neo-Confederate point of view concerning the centrality of slavery to the origin of the Civil War.
The one quibble, and the reason I gave this book four stars instead of five concerns Gallagher's essay "Fighting the Battles of Second Fredericksburg and Salem Church." I really couldn't find a point as to why this essay was included in the book, unless it was to demonstrate a hard and fast friendship link between Early and Lee that Gallagher does build upon in his essay on the Lost Cause. However, I still think the essay about Fredericksburg really doesn't belong in this format.

5-0 out of 5 stars A top notch critical evaluation
With the skill of a surgeon, Gary W. Gallagher dissects the myths and legends surrounding Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia, past and current, to reveal a fascinating new look at the "marble man".Positioning himself squarely between the Lost Cause proponents and the current pack of revisionists, Gallagher relies on primary sources (newspapers, diaries and letters of civilians and soldiers, official correspondence) and careful, well-reasoned analysis to discover the real truth surrounding Robert E. Lee, and in the process lands an effective blow worthy of the general himself upon both sides.Gallagher's claims that Robert E. Lee was indeed an able proponent of modern warfare (though I would dispute the term modern) and also a capable administrator fully capable of being as strict or lenient with his subordinates as the case required breathes new life into the continuing quest to discover this fascinating man and effectively destroys the myths held by both sides (ironically enough, both sides often seem to wind up arguing both sides of the same coin) that Lee was first of all a member of the landed Virginia gentry far too short-sighted and stuck in the past for command of the Confederacy's main eastern army as well as being far too gentlemanly to deal strictly with subordinates. In fact, Gallagher presents Lee, through his own words and letters, as a man fully aware of the forces arrayed against him and as one who from the beginning knew full well that the Confederacy needed to marshall all of its resources in order to win the war and gain independence and that tough decisions and hard sacrifices would be required, and that a strong government would be required to take charge in order to ensure this was done and coordinate everyone's effort. Also, the idea that Lee "bled" his army to death (the fact that Lee's army at the beginning of the 1864 Overland Campaign was basically the same size as it ever was seems to have escaped the notice of many) also comes across as rather weak thanks to Gallagher's fine research. The weakest argument Gallagher refutes is that Lee's myth was wholly created after the war, and he does this by proving most emphatically that Lee and his army were indeed the primary source Confederates looked to for hope as well as the national symbol of the Confederacy (much like Washington's Continentals) worldwide. The fact that the main part of Grant's thrust against the South hit here against Lee proves this as well. However, do not mistake Gallagher as a Lost Cause proponent in disguise; though he defends the points Lost Cause proponents make that are actually rooted in fact, he spares them not his swift, sharp sword in pointing out the concerted effort to preserve and protect the memory of the Confederate armies, and Lee in particular, by shaping history through their own eyes. Also, he cuts like a knife through as many of their arguments as those of the revisionists, who, in their zeal to cut through the myth of the Lost Cause (and rightfully so, since we must be as objective as possible) often go too far and wind up rejecting legitimate conclusions and research in favor of their own modern myth.In conclusion, Gallagher, the good professor has taught us all a valuable lesson; look not through the lens of your own eyes to view history, but search ever more diligently for the real facts and take nothing for granted.Though I'm sure we all carry our own biases (I fully admit my admiration for Lee, and I fail to see how anyone can remain truly and completely aloof), we can all separate ourselves, at least partially, from our opinions in order to get at the facts and reach reasonable conclusions, as Gallagher has so beautifully done.Good job, Professor Gallagher. ... Product Description

With roots in the brewing youth scene of the 1990's, Hugh Gallagher's debut novel tracks a young man's search for self through the scattered shards of a culture in flux.

Neil is a dentally challenged, reluctantly hip downtown scribe whose life's work is Dusted, the 'zine that once earned him the title of New Jack Poet Warrior. But when the mag folds, Neil is left with an aching mouth and the realization that the icons of his time are either dying young, cashing in or dropping out. It's a time of reckoning—the perfect moment to cancel dental appointments and take off on a drift through the global ghetto. From the gritty grind of New York to the dark glitter of Hollywood, through the tropical wilds of Indonesia and the crumbling squats of East London, Neil embarks on a soulful search for a woman to love and a place to call home. But answers will remain elusive until the roaming writer tests both his friends and his beliefs, and commits to a plan to make peace with his teeth.

With deft insight, sly humor, and dazzling prose, Hugh Gallagher captures the conflict of finding one's way in a culture that mocks ambition while craving celebrity. At once a saddening chronicle of childhood's end and an epic dental saga through a world of possible futures, Teeth is a touching resonant anthem for all those truly hungry for a solid bite out of life.Amazon.com Review
Gore Vidal calls Hugh Gallagher's Teeth the "dental masterpiece we've all beenwaiting for." The protagonist, Neil, is the sort of hip, jaded, MTV-pumped,post-postmodern, literary punk who will appeal to street-savvy teensacross the globe, and he's probably the most dentally challenged guyreaders will ever encounter. After a freak accident leaves his teeth inshards in his mouth, Neil skips his suburban town, leaves his boringparents in the dust, finds a hovel to call home, crashes classes at arenowned New York City college, and earns his 15 minutes of fame by penningpostpunk literary manifestos for a reckless zine called (what else?)Dusted. The truth is this: All of this glory and excitement isjust a mirage, a facade, a set of sparkling dentures in an otherwise rottedmouth. Neil is running away from something. But what? He crosses theglobe, sells his soul, and abandons his calling all to discover that the key to lasting happiness may rest inside himself--maybe even in hisown mouth. Teeth is a coming-of-age tale like no other. Younger teens maybe mystified by it, but older teens will sink their ummmm ... teeth into it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally something else from Hugh Brown Shu!
To date, the only other review I've bothered to write on here was for a certain spoken word album titled "Bomb The Womb" by Hugh Brown Shu.Well, Hugh Brown Shu and Hugh Gallagher are one and the same person, and I have been waiting for more from this brilliant wordsmith ever since hearing "Bomb The Womb" in the summer of 1997.It was worth the wait...

Altho not as sharply brilliant as his album, this first novel of his is a great read and a must for anyone who ever might have considered themselves "punk," not to mention anyone who has even a drop of contempt for pop culture and the shallow veneer of MTV.His fictionalized versions of well known young celebrities are a bit thinly veiled, but in my opinion, if you're going to hurl rocks at sacred cows, make sure everyone knows what pasture you're aiming for.Besides, self-important celebrities deserve just as much ridicule as the undeserved worship they get from the sheep-like masses.I'm not much of a fan of contemporary literature, mostly because I see more literary television on the New York Times Bestseller's list than actual literature, but this book will proudly share shelf space with Kerouac, Salinger, Maughm, Vonnegut, and Dostoevsky.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes you think
Sure, some might say, at times Gallagher goes too far or overflows with a plethora of narcissistic comments about his teeth. All in all however, this is a classic. Witty and smart writing that makes you think (and makes your friends think you belong in a correctional facility) and that is perhaps what Gallagher intended to achieve.

To me, the book climaxed with the hilarious "youre my tooth" comment, directed at Sleek, one of Gallagher's slick characters. All in all, a top notch effort, which reminds me of books by banned russian authors Victor Pelevin or Eduard Limonov - classic's in their country.

Buy this now. Even if you wont like it, it might teach you something..

4-0 out of 5 stars clever, but sometimes goes too far
Hugh Gallagher does an excellent job at satirizing 90's MTV culture.Yep, he satirizes everything and everyone from Lollapalooza to Big Bop to Drew Barrymore...and it's all very funny and very clever. On the other hand, satirizing River Phoenix's death was in pretty poor taste.Besides that, excellent book.I'd definitely recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Narcissism is boring
In movies, it's always a bad sign when supporting characters spend a lot of time telling the main character what a great dancer/singer/actor he or she is.You know that the climax, when the star opens his mouth or busts a move, is going to be a disappointment, if not an outright embarrassment.

Too many supporting characters in TEETH spend too much time telling the protagonist -- a thinly-veiled Hugh Gallagher, we must assume -- what a great writer/punk poet/cultural avatar he is.In fact, TEETH is riddled with lazy descriptions, trite satire, sloppy grammar, and suburban Irish-American angst that was tired twenty years ago.

There is a great novel to be written about Generation Y and the collapse of the 'zine culture, but this isn't it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs Braces
Gallagher is the author of the now-famous college essay that is perhaps the single greatest essay written. With it, he established himself as a bold, fearless writer with an incredible sense of humor.I wish he was able to write a novel that consistently exhibited these same strong qualities.

Teeth is a fine, funny novel, its reasonably well written, the humor is brilliant and his characters are well developed.Yet there's something that keeps this from becoming a truly great novel.Perhaps is Gallagher's reliance on 90's clichés (yet Coupland's been able to pull it off and Bret Easton Ellis has used the entire decade of the 80's to his advantage).Gallagher satirizes the decade, its culture and its music with fake brand names, bands and magazines that are, perhaps, a little too close to their real counterparts (Rage Against the Chili Peppers?).

Overall, Teeth is good. Its worth reading and you won't regret picking it up.Contemporaries like Douglas Coupland, Brett Easton Ellis, and Dave Eggers have produced similar - probably better - novels but Gallagher's talent is well worth experiencing. ... Read more

A very good introduction into astrology, mixed in with alot of humor. This is great for a begginner and just as informative for thoose who have dabbled awhile. Enjoyable to read, as she gently walks you through each understanding, having you laughing all the way.

4-0 out of 5 stars This was a fun book to read
This book is a nice little addition to my personal library collection.
I found it to be very amusing to read and it taught me some new things as well. You won't regret reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars funny... and insightful!
i find some of the astrology books which try to take on a playful and funny tone can be dumb, and fall short of the mark in terms of content. not so with Kim Rogers Gallagher! she is the master of "light-hearted" astrology.. this book is informative and very insightful!

there is a part of AFTLSOTB which pops into my head all of the time. Pets.... and where they belong. As both and astrology and pet lover myself,I would like to weigh in on this issue. Intuitively, I'd say the 5th, where loves, children, creativity, and play goes. Pets in my family are like little friends/ family, and my dog definitely sparks my creativity. Also, the after work walk is what breaks up my day -- right in between work (6th house) and home (4th house): the 5th house.
I think the single down-side with pets is that their lives are too short, so we can only have them for a limited number of years. This would also be the down-side of our other 5th house experiences -- childhood, love affairs, play time.

anyway, if you are looking for a fun and funny beginner's astrology book, this one is tops. i also like the sequal, which deals with transits.

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique book!
Astrology for the Light Side of the brain is a great read. Rarely is a book both informative AND fun -- this book is just that. Kim Rogers-Gallagher's writing is colorful and vibrant, and I couldn't put the book down. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent!
I bought this book during my first semester of nurse anesthesia, and put it on the shelf thinking I would probably only use it when I get to clinicals this summer.I was wrong.

This book has helped me in lab classes, where I've had minimal, vague, fast demonstration and instruction on how to insert central lines.I was even able to discuss things that had not been brought up in class, and people thought the info was valuable.

Worth every penny.Very different than all the other stuff on my shelf, and therefore, it fills a gap the other books leave.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dummies guide to anesthesia
Perfect for those interested in expanding their prior knowledge of the field. The pictures walk you through step-by-step and the humor keeps the boredom from setting in. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the time and money
Somehow the authors have taken the very serious subjects near and dear to the heart of any anesthesia provider and made them dead-on funny -- but truly helpful and informative.I can't you how many times I've been saved by their tips and hints. This is a MUST HAVE reference for the anesthesia student.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anesthesia Unplugged
LOVE this book.It has practical information and tidbits with clearly defined illustrations.Very humerous as it brings it down to earth and does not create the "usual" anesthesia textbook.I recommend it especially to students and anesthesia providers to have as a reference.

Historical images of Robert E. Lee and his lieutenants have been shaped to a remarkable degree by former Confederates, who in reminiscences and other writings constructed the Lost Cause interpretation of the conflict. They portrayed Lee as a perfect Christian warrior, Stonewall Jackson as his peerless right arm, and the Army of Northern Virginia as the backbone of Confederate resistance. In this collection of thirteen essays, prominent Civil War historian Gary W. Gallagher explores the effect of Lost Cause arguments on popular perceptions of Lee and his most famous subordinates, astutely examining the ways in which historical memory is created and perpetuated. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Lee, His Generals, A War, Remembered
Gary Gallagher is a virtual one man industry of Civil War history, although at times I worry that he is spreading himself a bit thin and in danger of repeating himself. While I at first thought that this was a collection of essays by others that he edited, it is actually a collection of his own essays. One benefit of that fact is that this work offers the reader a chance to see the breadth and depth of this knowledge about this conflict and particularly about its most famous figure - Robert E. Lee. It also offers the opportunity to see beyond the marble man Lee to the real historical man and military leader.

The essays are grouped under four themes - Lee, Lee's Generals, Fighting for Historical Memory, and Distant Reverberations. Within each theme, Gallagher presents essays on Lee as a commander and a leader of men in an unequal struggle; Lee's complex relationships with his key subordinates - both the good and the not so good - with emphasis upon Longstreet, Jackson, Magruder, A P Hill, Ewell, and Early; the identfication of Lee by the creators of the Lost Cause version of Southern history; and finally the legacy of Robert E. Lee and of the Civil War in the age of Ken Burns, Shelby Foote, and a broadly supported battlefield preservation movement (among other Civil War related phenomena including battles over the Confederate battle flag adn the election of Barack Obama - though Gallagher doesn't mention either of these). To my mind this is one of Gallagher's best works and a worthwhile read for anyone interested in the Civil War both as history and cultural phenomenon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lee and his generals in war and memory
A collection of essays by Gary Gallagher (not an anthology like many of the other books with his name on them) mostly about Lee, his generals, and Lee's image during and after the war.

Gallagher writes with clear, sensible precision, tending to rationally examine evidence and the arguments of others rather than to leaping to "definite" conclusions or shoehorning the evidence into predetermined pet theories. I found his comments on Ken Burns' The Civil War and on the preservation of battlefields to be interesting, pertinent and something a bit different from the usual historical paper. Other articles here examine Lee and the ideology of the Lost Cause, Confederate leadership at Gettysburg (about which I am in entire agreement with Gallagher's conclusions except that I would be less generous to Hill), the 1862 and 1864 Valley campaigns, and other, often controversial, topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Detail on Lee, worthy of Douglas Freeman
Excellent book on Lee and his generals. Covers Lee's unique hands off style and his relationships with his senior staff with mini biographies. The best part of the book is how Lee deals with adversity particularly after Longstreet is shot down in the Wilderness, Ewell is relieved at Spotsylvania and Hill becomes bed ridden. Lee has to rise above it all and pick interim successors in a time of crisis with Grant bearing down. Lee has to make crucial personal decisions with limited experienced staff and take a greater role. One of Gallagher's best books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful Essays on the Confederate War Effort
Professor Gary Gallagher is a rarity among writers on the Civil War in his ability to appeal to both scholarly and lay audiences. He shares this ability with Professor James McPherson but with few others. Unlike Professor McPherson, Gallagher's writings concentrate on the Confederate war effort. He brings an obvious sympathy and understanding for his subject without overromanticizing of glorifying it.This is also highly unusual among writers on the Civil War.His essays are informed, through, balanced, and inspiring. They are a pleasure to read.

Professor Gallaher's "Lee and his Generals in War and Memory" (1998) consists of thirteen essays, most of which have been published elsewhere.I think the unifying theme of this collection is Professor Gallagher's attempt to find a middle ground between the "Lost Cause" interpretation of the Confederate war effort and recent, critical and revisionist accounts.

The "Lost Cause" school sees the Southern cause as entirely noble, tends to glorify Robert E. Lee and the valor of the Confederate troops, and attributes the defeat of the Confederacy almost entirely to the Federal's overwhelmingly superior resources and numbers. The revisionist school emphasizes the origins of the Civil War in the institution of slavery, tends to be critical of Lee and his aggressive and costly (in terms of casualties) approach to battle, and emphasizes Union skill and tenacity, among other factors, in finally winning the war.

The first section of Professor Gallagher's book consist of four essays on Lee which both explain the high regard in which he was held in the South while acknowledging mistakes and shortcomings. There is an introductory essay, "Lee and the Southern People" followed by essays on the Seven Days Battles against McClellan, Lee's actions on the second day of Gettysburg, and Lee's role in the Wilderness campaign of May, 1864.

The second part of the book, "Lee's Generals" includes a discussion of Stonewall Jackson's military reputation and how it was in large part deserved but also partly the result of chance and circumstance. In this regard, the section also includes an excellent essay comparing Jackson's 1862 Shenendoah Valley campaign, which was one of Jackson's great successes, with Early's 1864 campaign, generally regarded as a disaster. Professor Gallagher offers some unusual insights. This section also includes a thoughtful essay on A.P. Hill's and Richard Ewell's controversial roles during the first day of Gettysburg, as well as essays on Longstreet and John Magruder.

The third section of this book covers the history of Southern interpretations of the War, particularly the "Lost Cause" school of interpretation.Gallagher presents a well-balanced account of Jubal Early, whose writings became predominant in the "Lost Cause school" and a discussion of the Civil War letters frequently attributed to George Pickett -- of Pickett's charge on the third day of Gettysburg. Gallagher describes the history of these letters and concludes, in common with most scholars today, that they are in fact forgeries written by Pickett's wife.

A final section of the book offers a discussion of Ken Burns' "Civil War" series on public TV, which has much good to say about it, and Professor Gallagher's assessment of the continued importance of Civil War battlfield preservation to help educate the public about our Nation's history and about this seminal conflict.

I learned a great deal about the Civil War and about Confederate leadership from Professor Gallagher's fine collection of essays.

5-0 out of 5 stars A CIVIL APPROACH
Dr. Gallagher brings Civil War discussion into the modern era by using first rate scholarship and sound reasoning to evaluate many of the lingering controversies. Eschewing many of the ideologically driven, axe to grind efforts that often taint Civil War history, Gallagher has produced a balanced account of such topics as "Lost Cause" Historiography, the Longstreet blame game, and a candid assessment of Lee. Gallagher, a historian from the Univ. of Virginia, has attained one of those rare feats in historical writing by compiling a work that is congenial reading for both the academic and the layman. Seeking neither to glorify or desecrate some of the luminaries of the conflict, the author relies on the evidence, and letting such evidence speak for itself. There is also thoughtful commentary on the current state of historical sites, and the flood of film and print fiction works. The latter is particularly instructive, as it commends the likes of Burns and Shaara for promoting interest, while cautioning about the Eastern Theater biases contained in such productions. Teachers seeking an excellent supplemental reading to Civil War courses can do no better than LEE AND GENERALS. It isa masterful job of separating the fact from the fiction and should remain an enduring contribution to Civil War Historiography. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual companion and gentle guide
In his book, Healing Takes Time, Dr. David Gallagher gently takes the reader's hand and together they walk the tough journey towards spiritual wellness through scripture promises and quiet reflections. His support and guidance smooth the rough spots as his gentle voice quiets the restless and provides hope for those who need understanding. Above all, his faith in God's love and compassion for each of us brightly lights the way.

3-0 out of 5 stars Map for a Healing Journey
In his dedication, Gallagher mentions individuals who have lost babies, children, and spouses as well as those who will face any serious loss in the future. Throughout the book's 52 chapters he makes clear that the cause of grief is less an issue here than the journey to healing. Each two-page topic begins with an affirmation and reflection, often based on Gallagher's own experience. For example, the fourth chapter opens with"Today with God's help: I will remember that burden bearing means sharing." The reflection takes us to a hospital room where the author's father is dying. Gallagher is there, accompanied by a friend whose comfort comes in the form of total silence. Sometimes, Gallagher writes, burden bearing is about sharing things other than words."

The remainder of each chapter consists of a scripture passage and questions for meditation, suggested action, a brief prayer, and space for writing a brief journal entry. The author encourages readers to use the book in any way that works, be it weekly, monthly or otherwise; individually, with a friend, or with a group. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book by Jackie's "aide"
As the leading civilian authority on the Secret Service, I recommend this book for several of the gems re: the Secret Service and their failure on 11/22/63 when JFK was killed under their watch. We learn that Jackie felt Greer was ultimately responsible for JFK's death ("he just as well could have been Maude Shaw [little John John and Caroline's nanny]...get yourself a good driver so that nothing ever happens to you") *and* there are several unique photos inside depicting Secret Service agents' Floyd Boring (in charge of planning the Texas trip), Sam Sulliman (smiling, in the doorway of the trailer), George Hickey, Lynn Meredith (twice!), Jerry Behn, and Roy Kellerman (listed as "Roy KILLERMAN": A Freudian slip, perhaps?), among others. Get this!I spoke to most of the agents depicted in this book and Meredith, for one, liked it.
