Just a few chapters into Inkspell, Mo (a.k.a. "Silvertongue") sagely says to his daughter, "Stories never really end, Meggie, even if the books like to pretend they do. Stories always go on. They don't end on the last page, any more than they begin on the first page." A fitting meta-observation for this, the unplanned second installment in Cornelia Funke's beloved now-trilogy.

Of course, it's that sort of earnest, almost gushing veneration of books and book-loving that made the absorbing suspense-fantasy Inkheart so wonderful in the first place, with that lit-affection getting woven integrally into the plot (Inkheart being both Funke's first book in the series, and the fictitious book within that book, authored by the frustrated Fenoglio, now trapped within the book, er, within the book. Fenoglio, perhaps not surprisingly, self-referentially wishes in Inkspell that he had written a sequel to Inkheart.) Inkspell should serve as a special treat for fans of the first book, as characters from Inkheart who have found themselves in the "real world" (if there is such a thing) find themselves read back into their own mythic, word-spun world--along with some of our favorite "real-world" characters. As with the previous book, Funke's greatest accomplishment here is telling such a rich and involving (and fun!) story, while still managing sweet, subtle commentary on the nature of words and meaning. Realistic fantasy?
Inkspell is the thrilling sequel to Inkheart. Once again, it follows Meggie and her family, but instead of in our world, they are in the Inkworld. Basta has found himself another reader and goes after Dustfinger, who has returned to the Inkworld. Of course, Farid and Meggie must follow to warn Dustfinger. Then it's only a matter of time for her parents to follow (unfortunately not of their own will). They are then mixed up in the politics of the medieval fantasy world, in a battle between good and evil. In the Inkworld, there is more to fear than just the mythical creatures.

I really enjoyed this book. Despite taking place in a fictional world, it feels real. The characters are multifaceted and the Inkworld is anything but idyllic. The world is very similar to our own during the medieval era, complete with women having no rights, marrying early, and tyrants. For example, a strolling player (an outlaw) was killed and the murderer wouldn't be persecuted in any way. This is almost unthinkable to our world. Some of the themes and plot lines seemed a bit adult for the age group it was aimed at, such as Dustfinger's daughter having an affair with the married Prince Casimo. Just because it's a fantasy world doesn't mean that it can't have its own harsh realities.

Another aspect I really liked is Dustfinger. We get to see him in his element, the Inkworld. In the last book, he was a morally grey person just out for himself. In this book, he really comes into his own as a hero. We get to see his unique powers over fire in this world, as well as his newfound sense of bravery and honor. There are quite a few stunning fight scenes involving him in the book. It really lends an excitement that wasn't as apparent in the first book.

The first book was good and the second was better. Inkspell really stepped up the action and suspense. I highly recommend this for fellow booklovers.

Return to Inkworld where the story has a life of its own
This is the second book in the Inkheart trilogy.When Dustfinger finally finds a way back to his homeland, there is much disruption back in this world. Farid, who wanted to go with him, finds Meggie and convinces her to read him into the book and Meggie decides to join him to warn Dustfinger about Basta. After their disappearance into the book, her parents and aunt are held hostage and then her parents are also brought to Inkworld along with some of the villians.Meggie finds out that the storyworld is a darker and more dangerous place than she ever suspected and the two search for Fenoglio, the author to attempt to put things right. As the story changes and goes out of control, the world that Fenoglio created is altered beyond his expectations leading to the death of a major character which I expect will be explored in the final book in the trilogy.

Good Second Book in the Trilogy
Inkspell carries the themes, characters and plot forward from Inkheart, as some of the characters move from our world to the inkworld and come face to face with the fantasy conjured by the mind and writing of Fenoglio who finds his pen continues to create as he lives in his own created world.The story is exciting and holds plenty of suprises and twists. The characters become more developed, and it is interesting how the inkworld characters illustrate a certain fantastical quality that is in line with being made up by Fenoglio. What I found tedious were some of the redundant situations such as Basta and Mortola arriving again at Elinor's and taking everyone captive, etc. We already went through this. I also found that this book had more chapters with little or no action. Even so, it is a worthy ready and enjoyable.

As Good as INKHEART
In this very nice addition to the first book, INKHEART, all your favorite characters return but instead of coming out of the books, they're going in! This time, Meggie, Mo, Farid, Dustfinger, and Gwin are pulled into the mysterious book INKHEART, a medieval land filled with thieves, horrible creatures, tyrant rulers, and robbers. Still sought after for their talents and stuck in the world of INKHEART, Mo and Meggie search for the author of the perilous book (who previously was read into the book accidentally) who could write them out of the book forever. This book, as compelling and jaw dropping as the last had me laughing, sweating, screaming, and crying the whole way through!

Such a good book. I read it over 5 times and it always stays interesting and new to me.Funke's words are used so specifically in this book, how the main characters feel, what scene one of stories is set in... Her writing is always strong and creative, in a way. I mean, I think this book should be available to ages 10+.You really should read it, if you're not afraid to read it...

a must have!
The long awaited Brendan Fraser biography is here, and to anyone with an interest in this incredible talent this bookis a must have. Fans suffering from cases ofblind faith may wince a bit at the author's honesty and objectivityregarding some of Mr. Fraser's career choices and box office results. But Denise Tyrell's job was not to sugar coat the truth, instead she goes so far as to dispel many myths supported by magazine articles and talk show hosts. The book confirms what Brendan Fraser admirers have known for quite some time: that he is a completely unique individual with an incomparable gift. To those of you who are just now discovering his body of work,don't look for any behind the scenes dirt - there simply isn't any. The fact that such a genuinely pleasant person could be thriving in today's Hollywood isjust one of the facts this book brings forth.

Brendan Fraser
I am a huge Brendan Fraser fan; I think he is the most charming, energetic and fresh actor in Hollywood today. In this autobiographical book, Denise Tyrrell is able to capture that energy and charm in a very eloquent narrative of Brendan's life. When you think of Brendan Fraser from Encino Man to The Mummy, he does not necessarily appear to be an actor with a life story worth reading, but NOT so!!! I found his life story to be very provocative, intriguing and entertaining, with very engaging use of language by the author.

This book is required reading for anyone who enjoys Brendan Fraser or his movies. The best part is that there is still a long way to go in his career! So hopefully the author will update this great story soon.

Faascinating Reading about a Fascinating Actor

Great and funny movie
I love this movie it keeps your attention. Its funny and it seems so much like it could be possible.

A book that enhances the movie!
I watched the movie and fell in love with the characters. When I read this book it made the movie even better! There are parts of the book that the movie didn't cover that enhanced the story and made the good characters even more likeable...and the bad ones even more creepy!

A Terrible and Offensive Book!
My friend and I have watched the movie a zillion times, and have memorized almost every line.We wanted to read this book because of our love for the movie.This book was the WORST book based on a movie I've ever read!The dialogue was awful, and so were the character portrayals!Evie is portrayed as a racist snob commenting on Ardeth's people ("Yes, such amusing notions these primitives have.").Rick is portrayed as a stupid smart-aleck welcoming Izzy ("Izzy!Is you is or is you ain't my baby!").Alex is portrayed as a whining baby saying to Lock-nah ("I'll just pee in my pants, and I'll tell your boss lady you wouldn't let me go to the bathroom...").Meela/Anck-su-namun is portrayed as a smart, upbeat woman saying to Jonathan ("You see, I have a photographic memory..."). Jonathan is portrayed as a wise-cracking idiot replying to Meela ("That's a coincidence.I have a pornographic memory, myself.").Imhotep is portrayed as a weak, sympathetic man when he is barely able to lift Alex up, and then wags a finger at him, scolding him ("Naughty, naughty.").Also, some of the dialogue was not set in the right time period (1934).For example, Alex says that his visions are "better than a ViewMaster," and Jonathan says that a picture looks like a "surveillance photograph."I was VERY offended at how this book was written!If you LOVE the movie, DON'Tbuy this book!

Great Novel, Great Movie
The Mummy Returns is easily one of the best movies I have ever seen. I find it fresh, original, emotional, and suspensful, and reading the novel is just as gripping as watching the movie.
I found the first movie to be very cliched, with Evelyn as a clumsy damsel in distress. In the Mummy Returns, her character undergoes a considerable and very welcome improvement: Evelyn is now as strong as rick, and she even saves the day herself a couple of times. This book is differant from the movie, and that involves the methods of worshiping the scorpian King, but the story still wraps up satisfying

So, The Mummy was great. The Mummy Returns was awesome. Now, the book, The Mummy Returns is Excellant! If you want entertainment, read this book. If you loved the movie, read this book. If you want a book that'll keep you intrested to the very end, and then it'll make you want to read it again, this is THE book. Even if you've seen the movie, you still should read this. If you haven't seen the movie, then read the book and then see the movie. Or see the movie and read the book, it dosen't matter...It's still worth your while. The only thing is that it's ALMOST identical to the movie, except a few situations. And when reading, they make the Scopian King sound much better than what he looks like in the movie. Which he looks like a giant... crab! But all 'round this is not just another book, to add on your list. It's a GREAT book that will satisfy your entertaining needs. This is one of those books that people who suffered as a student in math class will appreciate especially if they have to teach math conceptes to their children or others. It's a fantasy, it's long, and it's got dragons in it. Dragon Rider is bound to be another hit book from Cornelia Funke! Ever since the popularity of bestselling fantasies The Thief Lord and Inkheart went global a few years ago, legions of fans have demanded more books from the German author than she can reasonably hope to write each year. So, re-discovering this hefty, earlier novel from 1997 was a logical development--and her keenest readers will devour it as before.

Aimed at slightly younger readers than her previous novels, despite its massive five hundred pages, Dragon Rider is about a brave young dragon called Firedrake who embarks upon a dangerous journey to the Rim of Heaven in the Himalayas--a magical place where silver dragons can rest easy, free from the threat of destruction by mankind and their only hope of sanctuary. The key to its location is a map rendered by a rat who is a master cartographer.

Firedrake is joined on his quest by Ben, an orphaned boy, and Sorrell--a wise-cracking Brownie that is an odd, but ingenious, grumpy kind of fairy. Their journey is not a straightforward one by any means. Created by an alchemist called Petrosius Henbane in 1424, Nettlebrand (a malevolent creature covered in impenetrable gold plates) is their biggest threat--he is intent on destroying them. Nettlebrand is aided by Twigleg, a homunculus who has stowed away in Ben's bag and who is feeding reports on their progress back to his master.

Enchanting Adventure
This book is a wonderful read for any age.Cornelia Funke entrances the reader with witty humor, magical phenomenon, and excellent writing.I have enjoyed this story over and over again. It is a wonderful choice for middle school ages especially.

Overflowing with Whimsical Creatures and Lovable Characters
Once again,Cornelia Funke has enchanted readers (myself included) with her tale of an orphan, a dragon, and a brownie. When the humans discover the dragons' valley, Firedrake, one of the remaining dragons in existence, and his brownie friend Sorrel embark on a perilous journey to find the Rim of Heaven, a safe haven where the dragons can live in peace. On the way, they are found by an orphan named Ben, who, having no family or friends, decides to come with them on their seemingly impossible journey. This book is filled to the point of overflowing with whimsical creatures and lovable characters. If you've got a young reader in your family, I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Venture Forth, With Ben, Sorrell and Firedrake!
Dragonrider is an exciting fantasy fiction book by Cornelia Funke.It tells the amazing story of a young boy Ben and his adventures with Firedrake, his dragon friend, who must return to the Rim of Heaven to escape the evil Nettlebrand, who is trying to destroy the last remaining dragons on earth.In the start of the adventure, Ben meets Firedrake, a heroic dragon, and his mate, Sorrell, a grouchy magical Brownie.Ben learns to ride on Firedrake's back, and offers to go with him and Sorrell to find the Rim of Heaven.The middle of the book is full of amazing chapters, each telling the tale of a different mythical creature that they meet along the way.It is not an easy ride!By the end, they have adventures that change them all forever.I think the point of the story is that we should take chances and venture out in life, which can be full of magic and possibility.

In the beginning, the other dragons are all cowardly and don't believe in the Rim of Heaven.They want to just stay where they are, safe and sound in their caves.Unfortunately, most of them get eaten by doing this.Sorrell is cranky and wants to stay with his Firedrake, without others, but he ends up adventuring forth with Ben.Ben leaves his small corner of the city and takes a big risk by getting on that dragon's back!They have a lot of setbacks, and fearsome encounters with magical creatures.Some of this is awful, but it's all exciting, and they grow as characters.In the end, they... well, you'll have to read that for yourself, I won't spoil it for you!

Overall, I think this is a fantastic book, and you may be convinced, as I was, that you too should take some risks and go on your own adventures.Don't be afraid and cower in your own little corner, get on that dragon, and venture forth!

Awesome story and outstanding narration
I initially started reading Cornelia Funke's writing with "Inkheart" and subsequently found this book while looking for her other books. "Inkheart" may be geared towards older children, but "Dragon Rider" is really geared towards younger audiences. I love the story of friendship and the quest/journey they go through. My 6 year old daughter loved listening to this book while we were in long car drives. As with any story, there were times of tension/suspense in the book, but it never got as dark as the Inkworld trilogy. Just the right amount of tension for a younger child to process/deal with.

The narration was also very spot on. Brendan Fraser also narrated "Inkspell" (which is quite good too), but I like his narration of "Dragon Rider" the best. The voice of Sorrell, Twigleg, and Gravelbeard were my faves. And, unlike more traditional audio book narrators, he would sometimes include sounds (like a thud, a splat, etc) that are not literally written in the book but described in the book. This definitely added another dimension to the entire experience.

This is one book where I'd recommend the Audio CD over the book. Two thumbs up!

Perfect for young advanced readers
We bought this book for our very young advanced reader and we were not disappointed.
