Every day we put on different masks to conform to the expectations of those people around us. We have different masks to present ourselves to our mothers, our fathers, our co-workers, our lovers, and even strangers. A person who is strong willed and vibrant amongst his friends may become reserved and soft spoken when around his father. Or, someone may project the perfect image of the independent woman at work, while at home she steps into a more subservient role and caters to the needs of her husband and children. Sometimes these masks manifest themselves in subtle ways, a change in the tone of voice or a shift in posture, but people completely without masks are few and far between. As you walk down the street and look at people, you do not see who they really are; you see the persona they project to you. Photographs of people either tear away these masks, exposing the truth of the person underneath, or they build that mask up, making it completely convincing and impenetrable. Occasionally, a photograph both builds up and tears down a person's mask, simultaneously reflecting who that person is and who they wish they could be.Take Roland Dorcean's Second Prize Winning photograph, "Egg-Sercise," for instance. Dorcean's photograph of a well-built man easily provides a testimonial to the benefits of working out. In addition to his impressive physique, the subject's facial expression accentuates his tough-guy image. His head tilts slightly downward, causing his gaze to form into a "no nonsense" glare towards the camera. The viewer wonders if this presumed tough-guy is simply that, or if he uses his outward appearance to hide his true nature.
