Product Description
In Slavoj Zizek and Michel Foucault, this book brings together two of the most prominent thinkers in contemporary critical theory. Starting from a critical assessment of the Foucauldian paradigm of discourse analysis, it explores the theoretical scope and political consequences of Zizek's blend of Lacanian psychoanalysis, Hegelian philosophy and Marxist politics. The comparison between the two thinkers throws into relief the commonalities and irreconcilable differences of their respective approaches to critical theory. By unmasking reality as contingent symbolic fiction, the authors argue, Foucauldian criticism has only deconstructed the world in different ways; the point, however, is `to recognize the Real in what appears to be mere symbolic fiction' (Zizek) and to change it. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars strawman debate?
I have to admit I have not read this book. However, I would not buy this book because if the following statement (see below) in the scanty product description reflect the authors' understanding of Foucault, then I think this is very likely to be a strawman debate. But, since the authors favour Zizek's approach, I suspect this book will have a more defensible account of Zizek's work so it may be worth it from that point of view.

''By unmasking reality as contingent symbolic fiction, the authors argue, Foucauldian criticism has only deconstructed the world in different ways; the point, however, is `to recognize the Real in what appears to be mere symbolic fiction' (Zizek) and to change it.''

Firstly, Foucault is not a relativist regarding the truth (see Todd May's book: 'Btween genealogy and epistemology'). In fact, he is not concerned with questions of truth versus fiction.Instead he is interested in how it is that certain practices have historically come to function as truths. He explicitly does not make claims as to what is actually 'true' or not and does not purport to 'unmask' reality as mere fiction. As he has said numerous times, he leaves the question of truth open. Foucault is not concerned with showing that truth does not exist.

Moreover, his approach could only be considered as an entirely deconstructive exercise if one believes, as in our dominant truth regime, truth must be purified of ethics, power and contingencies to be legitimate. Foucault, in contrast, does not think that tracing the elements and exposing the contingencies and power techniques in the constitution of knowledges/truth by itself delegitimizes truth claims. According to him, this neither undermines nor supports these claims to truth. Instead, he thinks we cannot produce truths/knowledge, nor indeed have society, without power techniques of some sort, so it is pointless to try to eradicate them. Instead we should be concerned with modifying and changing them and this should be informed by ethical concerns. So, unlike much of the critical tradition, Foucault is not at all interested in deconstructing the ideological contamination of truth or reason but rather he is interested in how it was put together in order to be able to think/act out different (equally contingent but more acceptable) configurations and discern 'weak' points in the present architecture.

BTW, Foucault is often mistaken for a relativist, in part, because he is highly skeptical of claims to truth made in human sciences, particularly 'human nature', and in his studies he proceeds from the presumption 'what if' we take claims to truth as unproven (eg of human nature) and proceed as far as possible (this can only ever be partial for any given study) without a priori theory to direct and interpret our 'findings'.

It is also inaccurate to characterise Foucault as being concerned with 'symbolic' fictions. He clearly distinguishes his work from the analysis of signs, symbols and communication. He does not dismiss these techniques but he thinks it is more interesting and productive to study concrete, real practices, ie as the complex network of techniques of power that operate at many levels in modern societies. In his approach, communication tools are a possible technology of power among many others (but communication is not reducible to relations of power).Foucault's insistence on this approach is precisely because he is concerned with practical material and political effects of the entwinement of techniques of power both with knoweldge and the constitution of ourselves as subjects - in our very desires, ways of knowing, capacities, will to rule ourselves... etc. So this is no mere concern with 'symbolism' - in fact his work is possibly better described as concerned with'material' fictions (that may or may not also be 'true').

Likewise the authors would be mistaken if they also attribute to Foucault a lack of ethico-political concern for addressing and changing specific practices in our present. The whole point of his historico-empirical investigations has been to provide an analysis that informs not only his own ethico-research concerns but those of practitioners in political struggles. The point is to open up the possibilities for thinking and acting otherwise. To recognise what has been taken for granted as something that can be changed in very concrete ways. He believed the role of intellectuals was not to take up privileged positions as tactical advisors in practical political struggles, because he thought that was better undertaken by those directly engaged in those struggles. ... Product Description
Models for Dynamic Microeconomics provides the advanced student with key methodological tools for the dynamic analysis of a core selection of macroeconomic phenomena, including consumption and investment choices, employment and unemployment outcomes, and economic growth.

The technical treatment of these tools will enable the student to handle current journal literature, while not assuming any particular familiarity with advanced analytical tools or mathematical notions. As these tools are introduced, they are related to particular applications to illustrate their use.

Chapters are linked by various formal and substantive threads. Discrete-time optimization under uncertainty, introduced in Chapter 1, is motivated and discussed by applications to consumption theory, with particular attention to empirical implementation. Chapter 2 focuses on continuous-time optimization techniques, and discusses the relevant insights in the context of partial-equilibrium investment models. Chapter 3 revisits many of the previous chapters' formal derivations with applications to dynamic labour demand, in comparison to optimal investment models, and characterizes labor market equilibrium when not only individual firms' labor demand, but also individual labor supply by workers, is subject to adjustment costs. Chapter 4 proposes broader applications of methods introduced in the previous chapters and studies continuous-time equilibrium dynamics of representative agent economies, featuring both consumption and investment choices, with applications to long-run growth frameworks of analysis. Chapter 5 illustrates the role of decentralized trading in determining aggregate equilibria, and characterizes aggregate labor market dynamics in the presence of frictional unemployment. Chapters 4 and 5 pay particular attention to strategic interactions and externalities: even when each agent correctly solves his or her individual dynamic problem, modern microfounded macroeconomic models recognize that macroeconomic equilibrium need not have unambiguously desirable properties.

By bridging the gap between undergraduate economics and modern microfounded macroeconomic research, this book will be of interest to graduate students in economics, and as a technical reference for economic researchers.

Ultrasonography is effective in the evaluation of joint involvement in patients with rheumatic diseases, and may be useful in diagnosis and in monitoring the synovial inflammation by power Doppler technique, with great sensitivity in comparison with clinical examination. The high-resolution US combined with power Doppler technique is also able to detect the peripheral entheseal abnormality, the bone erosion and the tendon involvement. The purpose of this book is to elucidate the examination technique, the sonographic changes in musculoskeletal rheumatic involvement and the ultrasound assessment of joint rheumatic diseases. The atlas is enriched with several figures, in which the US picture is compared with that of conventional radiography, CT and MRI.

Product Description
Resourceful as James Bond, flamboyant as Austin Powers, and gay as a Christmas goose, there’s never been a secret agent quite like Jackie Holmes, the Man from C.A.M.P.

Writing under a series of noms de plume, Victor J. Banis played a primary role in creating a new genre: gay pulp fiction. Southern Tier Editions and Fabio Cleto, one of the true authorities on the camp phenomenon, are proud to bring back three tongue-in-cheek novellas—and a revealing interview with the author—together in one volume. These fast-paced stories, written and set in the swinging sixties and unavailable for over three decades, will introduce a new generation of readers to the fabulous adventures of gay superspy Jackie Holmes, the Man from C.A.M.P. Armed with a cache of secret weapons, a body that just won’t quit, and a white poodle called Sophie who’s trained to kill with her razor-sharp teeth, the blonde bombshell with a license to thrill known as Jackie Holmes will blow you away!

Espionage! Danger! International Intrigue! And Hot Gay Sex!

In The Man from C.A.M.P., Jackie must use his skills as a world-class expert in gemology, expert marksman, Bugatti mechanic, and irresistible sexpot to stop a gay diamond counterfeiting ring whose illicit activities could ruin the diamond industry and destabilize the world economy! Saddled with a loveable, yet straight-as-an-arrow G-man for a partner, Jackie must use all of his expertise—both in espionage and in steamy man-to-man sexuality—to put the culprits out of action.

In Holiday Gay, the Man from C.A.M.P. comes for Christmas! In this erotically charged adventure, Jackie Holmes takes on his arch-nemesis Birdie Wing (a villain as sinister and colorful as any from the Batman television series) and his fiendish gang of gay midget outlaws, the Swallows. Add a cadre of sinister Santas and dozens of missing jewels to the mix and you’ve got a plot that can only be unraveled by the Man from C.A.M.P.

Finally, The Son Goes Down finds Jackie balls-deep in international intrigue, investigating a bizarre kidnapping ring that takes him from L.A. to Tijuana and on to Lisbon. Scrumptious, blonde American boys are being abducted, force-fed an aphrodisiac potion, and put to work as sexual servants in overseas brothels. It’s up to the Man from C.A.M.P.—the secret organization dedicated to the protection of and advancement of homosexuals everywhere—to set things right. He’ll need all of his wiles, training, and irresistible sex appeal to close this case, but as always, he’ll do his best to get his man in the end.

Readers interested in the camp phenomenon, or simply hankering for a good detective story, will do well to bring home the amazing adventures of the Man from C.A.M.P. Jackie Holmes is one of the most remarkable characters in fiction and the humor, eroticism, and out-and-out cleverness of author Victor Banis has never been more sorely needed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining & Important Trio of Vintage Gay Pulps
This book is a compilation of three hard-to-find vintage gay pulp paperback novels, including The Man from C.A.M.P., Holiday Gay, and The Son Goes Down. These novels showcase a remarkable concept brought to life - the fabulous gay superspy Jackie Holmes.Imagine Jackie as a gay James Bond battling crooked criminals who prey on innocent homosexuals.Jackie Holmes is a refreshingly positive portrayal of a gay secret agent.

The novels deal with diamond counterfeiters, diamond thieves, and kidnappers trading in white slavery, respectively. These nefarious criminals and their deeds provide the back story in each work for Jackie's tongue-in-cheek crime solving and sassy detective work. All three works are refreshingly light, positive, sexy and entertaining, especially considering they were originally written between 1966 and 1968.This is an era when it was not unheard of for publishers and writers to receive lengthy prison sentences for producing mature material which would be considered more tame than most romantic fiction for sale in today's grocery stores.

Each story has a solid theme and reasonable character development, but what really shines are the highly entertaining plots, replete with many twists and turns of fortune for the characters involved.

I highly recommend these books because they are both easy and fun to read - they are especially great for beach or vacation reading.Despite that these books do not contain the "gravitas" that almost seems mandatory for earning modern critics' praise, the works are nevertheless historically important for the gay community.

In this edition, the novels themselves are presented with a thoughtful forward, author's note, an interview with the author, and suggested bibliography, all of which add even more overall value to work for readers who are further interested in the series. The original versions of these books contained redundant text/filler scenes which have been removed by the original author for this compilation.

Once you have read this compilation, consider Tales From C.A.M.P.: Jackie's Back, which contains three more (out of the nine total original) of Jackie's Holmes crime-busting adventures. Two more books in the series, The Gay Dogs and Color Him Gay, are also available individually as modern reprints.

This volume definitely deserves 5 stars.

Happy reading! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Recommended with reservation
Let me start off by saying that if you're looking to add some variety and spice into the fighters in your campaign, this is the perfect book for you. Just about every page will give you new ideas for your game.

The feats, prestige classes and fighting styles are particularly useful. The feats round out a lot of fighter abilities, giving greater benefit to a high Dexterity than the Combat Expertise feat tree, without being too over-balanced.

The prestige classes are a bit of a mixed bag. Some, like the Legend prestige class, are highly useful while others, like the Berserker, seem like pale imitations of other, better defined classes. Still, even the Berserker description contains some abilities that might be interesting to work into a campaign with barbarians.

The fighting styles are a relatively new concept. Basically, you spend some XP and spend some time training, after meeting some prerequisites, and you learn special abilities based on a fighting style. From trick archery to archery from horseback, to fighting with two light weapons, to fighting with the double-bladed orc axe, there's something for just about everyone. Some would argue that the fighting styles are too powerful, but since by the time you've mastered the fifth and final level of a style you've spent 7500 XP, three months game time, quite a bit of gold and focussed your feats, skills and abilities in one direction, I think the costweighs pretty evenly with the benefits.

The equipment section is pretty handy, particularly the section on black powder weapons that gets into a lot more detail than any other book I've seen. The damages on these weapons seem pretty high compared to their ranged-weapon counterparts, but the dangers of a misfired shell, coupled with the long loading time, balances this out. I particularly liked the addition of the magical weapon abilities for black powder weapons.

The OMCS, the mass combat system, seems pretty useful, although it does seem skewed towards creatures with many Hit Dice rather than those with actual combat ability. The system also doesn't take into account the difference in speed between units and how that could change the nature of combat. Still, it's a good basic framework to hang things off of.

The major problem is that the system gives too much benefit to PCs. A single character proficient with two weapons can, at 6th level, inflict nearly as much damage on a unit as an entire platoon of infantry of the same size as their target unit. That just doesn't seem quite right. Also, no credit is given for the effect that attacking from horseback would have on damage, defense and chance of striking one's opponent. All you get are extra hit points.

The book loses one star for the illustrations and story excerpts contained in the book. There are far too many cleavage-baring "chicks in chainmail" done in a simple line-drawing style. The stories, when they aren't directly offensive and misogynist, are just useless and rather drab, not doing anything but taking up space on the page.

The book loses another star for a lack of balance. Using this book, by 8th level I could create a fighter who, 30% of the time he strikes, inflicts quadruple normal damage with his attack, if he confirms his critical. That's just not a good thing, considering that his weapon, the flamberge, rolls 2d6 for damage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best d20 book yet published
I am glad I discovered this book; it is exactly what the doctor ordered. This book is an homage to the "Complete _______'s Handbooks" of AD&D 2nd Edition fame. It's a very good read.

1st, the book introduces the concept of Character Concepts, which are similar to "kits" except less broken.Want to have your PC be of a certain background and not wait for prestige classes to do it?Then the concepts work wonderful.

2nd, the prestige classes are nice, especially the "Legend", which is meant for charcaters above 15th level.Gives your fighter power more in line with a wizard of the level.

3rd, the new feats and weapons help hone the book

4th, and perhaps best of all, there is a system for Mass Combat, where fighting units are assigned HP, making for streamlined epic battles... ... Read more

Product Description

Presenting the first critical analysis of Carl Schmitt's The Nomos of the Earth and how it relates to the epochal changes in the international system that have risen from the collapse of the ‘Westphalian’ international order.

There is an emerging recognition in political theory circles that core issues, such as order, social justice, rights, need to be studied in their global context. Schmitt’s international political thought provides a stepping stone in these related paths, offering an alternative history of international relations, of the genesis, achievements and demise of the ‘Westphalian system.’ Writing at a time when he believed that the spatial, political and legal order—the nomos of the earth—had collapsed, he highlighted the advent of the modern state as the vehicle of secularization, tracing how this interstate order was able to limit and ‘rationalize and humanize’ war. Providing a large number of case studies including: global terrorism, humanitarian intervention and US hegemony, this book will give further impetus to, and expand, the nascent debate on the significance of Schmitt’s legal and political thought for international politics.

The International Political Thought of Carl Schmitt will be of interest to students and scholars of international relations, law and history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cafe Firenze Cookbook
Gorgeous food, great recipes and charming narratives. This book has some of the best cookbook photography I've ever seen...it beats anything in my personal collection.I work in a college library, with a culinary collection, at it ranks right up there with the best of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars great cookbook could be better
when my friend surprised me with book. at first i was like FABIO got a book? and looking through it i got excited seeing all the creative things you can do. but once you sit down and begin to prepare/execute something from this book, you loose the excitement.
this book has more cocktail recipes than it has with actual food. and fabio with the publicity that he has you'd expect a lot better. But overall the book is great and to be honest i really enjoy it. I just thought it needed more recipes than coacktails.

2-0 out of 5 stars Better as a Book than a Cookbook
This is a beautiful book, with a great deal of charm, but I don't know how practical it will be for me.The photography is beautiful (especially for the cocktail recipes, which are mesmerizing), but there aren't very many recipes for food.I don't drink often, and I don't have the hardware to make the drinks, so only half of the recipes in the book are even viable options for me.If you enjoy making cocktails, each food recipe is paired with a creative cocktail that should be consumed alongside, and the cocktails also have step-by-step photographic instructions for assembling the eye-catching garnishes, but I'm not the target audience for those sections.

My main problem with the book, though, is that it's a nice showcase for the two authors to showcase their charm, as they crack jokes about the police taking you to jail if you, say, overcook a chicken, and they use broken English throughout, but after forty pages of introduction, there was still not a recipe in sight. The section on chicken is a four-page essay on why chicken in Italy is better than chicken in the States (it's a convincing essay, I've been persuaded, but it's not what I wanted in a cookbook).

As a book about culture (restaurant culture, Italian culture, Italian American culture), with beautiful photographs, this book works, but it's billed as a cookbook, and the content just isn't there. It makes me want to visit this restaurant, but not try to cook their recipes myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Mother is Always Right
I couldn't agree more with all the Mom's Reviews..Fabio's, Jacopo's and Antonio's!
This is one of the most beautiful books out there. The photographs are so exquisite, they draw you in....and Fabio and Jacopo follow through with fabulous recipes..both food and beverage.
This cookbook will travel between my coffee table in the living room to my kitchen.
Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars A new favorite cookbook!
I am absolutely thrilled with this book. I have owned hundreds of cookbooks throughout my life, and this is definitely one of my top 10 favorites. The food is absolutely phenomenal, and very easy to prepare if you have a basic knowledge of cooking principles. The photography is absolutely stunning, and every page makes my mouth water.

I have to say that I'm not a fan of alcohol. I rarely drink anything but wine, and I don't even drink wine all that often. So I was a bit skeptical when I noticed that every recipe was followed by a mixed drink recipe. I was almost annoyed at first, because I wasn't interested in the drinks, and they were taking up half of the book! But the presentation of the drinks was so beautiful and so skilled that I found myself spending almost as much time viewing the drink pages as I did the food! (Well done, Jacopo!) I am just in awe at how skilled Jacopo is with garnishing drinks! They are truly works of art.

Aside from the amazing recipes and stunning photography, I love the fact that the editors left some of the broken English intact. At first I was a bit surprised, but it honestly gives the book so much character! It's an absolute delight to read, especially if you watched Chef Fabio on Top Chef. This book has more character than any other cookbook I've ever read.

If you're looking for a cookbook that will teach you how to make "Italian American" classics like spaghetti and meatballs or fettucini Alfredo, look elsewhere. You won't find any of those stale recipes here. What you will find is clean, modern, simple, flavorful Italian fare all wrapped up in a book that is as delightful to read as it is to actually use! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fabio wrote this and I'm the Queen of England
With all the reading I do, somehow I read this book where identical twin brothers were mistaken for each other and the very next book I read was a story about identical twin sisters who were mistaken for each other (Express Male by Elizabeth Bevarly).I was a bit dismayed when I read how much Lexi hated Yale and yet she so quickly ended up in bed with him.Okay, it wasn't really him, but she THOUGHT it was him.And as soon as Lexi discovered it was in fact Emmett, she was cool with that too.To my way of thinking, the fact that to Lexi these two brothers were so totally interchangable (if Emmett's dead, I'll sleep with Yale... oops, looks like this isn't Yale at all so I'll sleep with Emmett) made her a very shallow character. Her thinking seemed to be, "I'll just be with whichever brother wasn't killed."Hmmmm, how flattering to the man in her life! But it did not seem to bother Emmett. One would think that he would have some negative thoughts about "his" girl so readily going to bed with a man she thought was his brother but it did not appear to disturb him at all!Maybe Fabio DID write this for surely an accomplished author would have given the characters a bit more dimension and a bit more, well, character!

1-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Bad Writing
I cannot believe that someone actually gave this book 4 stars. Shadow writer or not, the writing was incredibly bad and made the convoluted plot even worse. There were too many characters, the hero has nothing going for him and the heroine has no backbone. This is my first Fabio book and I have to say it will probably be my last.

4-0 out of 5 stars You will enjoy this book!!A keeper:)
There is of course the knowledge that Fabio has a shadow author helping out with his novels. You will enjoy the plot twist and the suprise turn that the story takes. If you are a Fabio admirer you will enjoy this book. What the heck--you will enjoy this even if you do not know who Fabio is.He has the ideas and the shadow author has turned this book into a keeper. You will read this again ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Made For TV Movie
This could be one of those Sunday night made for TV movies, really.Interesting plot with plenty of twists and turns, well-developed characters and the storyline is very plausible. One thing missing for me was the "fluff" factor as I waited for the intimate scenes to really heat up they never really reached a fever pitch, like Rogue did for me, yet the rest of the storyline was all there. You won't believe it as it gets near the end. Oh, the "so-called" violence towards women, just added to intesity and excitment of the book, nice tension builder.

Fabio, keep up the sexy ideas, your better than you may be getting credit for.

1-0 out of 5 stars I can't belive he's a writer...
This book was a joke... Fabio should just stick to his... "I can't believe it's not butter" commercials... I would give this book a half a star if possible. I would also give a longer review if I didn't find this book to be a utter waste of my time and money!

1-0 out of 5 stars just plain bad
I can't believe it's not butter? I can't believe this guy is a writer! The characters don't make any sense, they are all two dimentional, predictable, and have no motivation beyond their own carnal desire.Real people are notlike this, and yes, I know, it's fiction...but as Mark Twain once said,"fiction has to make sense".Nothing about this book did.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't judge a book by it's cover
I've heard friends say Fabio should make a movie out of his books, yet this will not be the one.The characters are flat, and the villians have no complexity behind them at all.I knew from the begining how it wouldend, and that is not romance.Really disappointing work.

1-0 out of 5 stars take away his word processer
the French have a word for books like this..."Le Pew!"This guy is supposed to be romantic? and he treats his women as two dimentional characters who can be beaten and killed? Please, give a contract to somestarving author who can write a novel. This is why I stick to reading theclassics. ...
