It's Nice, But Not for Professionals...
Great Resource I recommend this one!
Great Resource I recommend this one!
Great Overall Reference to Using VB6 for Today's Development The authors of this book have done a very good job of bringing together some of today's hottest technologies under one cover.Experienced VB developers will find the chapters within a practical reference (if not a valuable introduction) to modern APIs, such as ADO, COM+, MSMQ, XML, and SOAP.In the short time that I've owned this, I have already pulled it off of the shelf to reference the text and examples on several occasions. Having said that, though, there is only so much that can fit into any one book, so it does not serve as an absolute reference manual for any single technology. The book comes with a CD that contains the usual source code from the book, plus 10 Case Studies and 5 Wrox titles in PDF format.Just a technical note, though: I couldn't open the PDF files using Acrobat Reader 4.05, but a simple upgrade to the latest free version resolved that problem.
A great resource for all VB 6 developers |

Good For Additional Practice
Mixed Bag
Frustrating Experience I've been a big fan of other books by Wrox, but this one leaves a lot to be desired.
Easy to follow I love this book. The best part is that I can read it and follow the examples without having to sit at my computer. The key word in the title is beginning. I have found it to be a great foundation book on its subject matter. The authors should get an atta boy for this one.

Editorial Review Product Description The 2nd edition of this sucessful book has several new features. The calibration discussion of the basic LIBOR market model has been enriched considerably, with an analysis of the impact of the swaptions interpolation technique and of the exogenous instantaneous correlation on the calibration outputs. A discussion of historical estimation of the instantaneous correlation matrix and of rank reduction has been added, and a LIBOR-model consistent swaption-volatility interpolation technique has been introduced. The old sections devoted to the smile issue in the LIBOR market model have been enlarged into a new chapter. New sections on local-volatility dynamics, and on stochastic volatility models have been added, with a thorough treatment of the recently developed uncertain-volatility approach. Examples of calibrations to real market data are now considered. The fast-growing interest for hybrid products has led to a new chapter. A special focus here is devoted to the pricing of convertible bonds and inflation-linked derivatives. Since Credit Derivatives are increasingly fundamental, and since in the reduced-form modeling framework much of the technique involved is analogous to interest-rate modeling, Credit Derivatives -- mostly Credit Default Swaps (CDS) and CDS Options - are discussed, building on the basic short rate-models and market models introduced earlier for the default-free market. Best book on interest rate models
The best book I have read on the subject Anyone interested in implementing the LMM/BGM/MSS model in practice is well advised to read it. I would just say that this is certainly a must have in the field.
New stuff and nice overview: hard to beat! I've followed a similar path from control to finance, and having worked with interest rate models, I couldn't help but order this Brigo-Mercurio book. I had high expectations 'cause these two guys are working in a bank on the real thing. 1-factor models are handled with great care, a ton of formulas and recipes are given. I've never seen this kind of analysis of pricing with Gaussian 1-f models. The new upgrade of the CIR model is interesting and accurate. "CIR++" is now my favorite 1-f model. I like the treatment of lognormal 1-f models and the explanation of Monte Carlo and trees -- the flow-chart for Bermudan swaptions is crystal clear! Plots of market implied structures and volatility calibration are useful additions. The chapter on 2-f extensions has one of the best discussions on volatility, and two tons of useful formulas/recipes. Two dimensional trees! The HJM chapter size is OK. I agree - the useful models embedded in HJM are short rate models and market models. Market models - these three chapters alone are worth the book. You'll find yourself nodding as you read the guided tour. They make it look easy all the time. The exposition is focused, clear, intuitive, detailed. There's also new stuff, just check the calibration discussion! Smile modeling begins with a brilliant tour and ends with Brigo-Mercurio's new approach - the mixing dynamics - deserving a whole chapter if expanded. The detailed explanation on products is a much welcome original addition. Cross currency derivatives! Quotes - as in Brigo's old work - are a pleasant diversion while reading. The 500 and more pages are a treat given the competitive price. Still there's room for improvements - more "CIR2++"! Something on 3-f models. Historical estimation of the correlation matrix and low-rank optimized approximations. Expand smile modeling! More hedging. Something on structured products. Cross currency libor model. chapter 9 - other interest rate models - sounds out of place and can be suppressed for other things. This book rings true and has useful teachings for students, academics and practitioners. Although it requires some background in stochastic calculus, it's hard to beat on the pricing front. Kudos to Brigo and Mercurio! It only harms there aren't enough books like this.
Nicely written overview of interest rate models The book contains a "rational" catalogue of models used in practice ( as opposed to models which are impossible to implement!). In contrast with academic books on interest rate modeling which deal with HJM formulation, there is a lot of emphasis here on LIBOR and Swap market models Part II: Interest rate models in practice is particularly useful because it deals with implementation and calibration which, as any practitioner knows, are important and usually delicate issues. This book can also be used for a graduate level/PhD course on interest rate models. There are a lot of numerical examples in the book and mathematics is kept to the necessary level while keeping the

FROM BACK COVER
This is one of Fabio's finest efforts.
To my surprise, I liked it A new resident, Sawyer Howland has a strong feeling that someone needs his help.He has learned over the years not to ignore his visions and thus goes out in a blizzard.Herescues Jorey. Both are attracted to each other, but for different reasons both are frightened of the other. However, someone is killing Jorey's childhood friends, leaving her to wonder if the MYSTERIOUS Sawyer is the killer. Super model and sometime author, Fabio has scribed a well-written romantic suspense that will elate his myriad of fans while pleasing readers of the sub-genre.The fast-paced story line moves forward and readers will feel Jorey and Sawyer's angst.Though most fans will be a bit disappointed with the ending, Fabio has written a romance novel that will be well received by more than just those readers who judge a book by its cover only. Editorial Review Product Description Due to the diverse diagnostic imaging techniques available (x-ray/CT, Magnetic Resonance, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasonography) radiologic examinations are made of an enormous amount of images, which means that the elements to be described and interpreted by the radiologist are sometimes exorbitant. Furthermore, the expectations of the population and the ones of the physicians requiring examinations are growing, so that besides patients, also so-called clients (i.e., supposed healthy people) flow into everyday clinical practice of a radiology department, based on disease prevention/screening programs. Registration and interpretation/reporting modules of a computer-assisted radiologic reporting system were created to help the radiologist in his task. However, the radiologist is also expected to write a report with a diversified language, according to diagnostic technique(s), population type (client vs. patient; pediatric, adult, geriatric), pathology, and across all body areas. The authors wish to suggest a shared methodology to uniform as much as possible the way of writing a radiologic report, how to most effectively communicate the results of an examination. The important role played by language also from a legal-forensic point of view is also considered. |

A good introduction... This book was exactly what I was looking for. It just covers every possible way of integrating XML into C++ applications. This book is a wonderful survey of all possible solutions. The fact that this book covers every possible technology is of course very appreciated, but its coverage of every technology is very brief and may only serve as an introduction. Worse, the very comparison between every technology and the "when to use what?" section is of a mitigated quality. The author just doesn't explain well his point. The book looks more like a compilation of chapters than a unique book with a clear vision. After reading this book, I fell like I know more how to integrate XML into C++ and dispose of some information on which technology use, but definitively need to buy another book to cover the chosen technology. Overall, this book is a very good introduction to the integration of XML into C++ apps, but a better "guidance / technology comparison" would be appreciated.
The only one on the subject, but far from being perfect In such an environment, a book devoted specifically to processing XML The good: - the book covers all major XML processing technologies - It will not bore you with XML basic description, excessive quoting The bad: - Even though all of the technologies are compared, the comparison is - Most of the large examples are Windows-oriented. - Source code for the examples is only available on an attached CD. - Speaking of the examples on the CD, they are presented in the worst The bottom-line: this books falls way short of my "golden standard"
There are dozens of books on XML and Java and one for C++? It will get out of date pretty quick as most tech books of this kind do but as a reference it does nicely.

Editorial Review Product Description Are you ready for the future of data access in .NET? At the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference (PDC) 2005, Microsoft previewed a new technology, Language-Integrated Query (LINQ). It captured a lot of attention because it addressed the fundamental issue of merging object-oriented applications with relational data. The LINQ Project team demonstrated how to use LINQ to query a variety of data sources, such as a SQL Server database, an XML file, and an array, and how to manage the data using an object-oriented approach. Fabio Ferracchiati has written a comprehensive guide to the three main parts of the LINQ May 2006 CTP: managing in-memory data (LINQ to Objects), accessing relational databases (LINQ to ADO .NET), and manipulating XML documents (LINQ to XML). Each chapter offers many practical examples that you can try yourself with the downloadable source code. Youll quickly learn everything you want and need to know about LINQ by actually using LINQ. The future of.NET data access is already hereand its a very bright one! Customer Reviews (1)
