Editorial Review Product Description Who among us hasn’t marveled at the diversity and beauty of shells? Or picked one up, held it to our ear, and then gazed in wonder at its shape and hue? Many a lifelong shell collector has cut teeth (and toes) on the beaches of the Jersey Shore, the Outer Banks, or the coasts of Sanibel Island. Some have even dived to the depths of the ocean. But most of us are not familiar with the biological origin of shells, their role in explaining evolutionary history, and the incredible variety of forms in which they come. Customer Reviews (2)

Editorial Review Product Description Named a Best New Chef in America by Food & Wine and Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic by the James Beard Foundation, rising star Fabio Trabocchi offers a unique take on his native cuisine, that of the until-now-overlooked Le Marche region of Italy. Every chef is a product of a place and a tradition. Fabio Trabocchi's soul is in the Italian province of Le Marche. Equidistant from Rome and Florence, Le Marche is on the Adriatic coast, bordered to the north by Emilia-Romagna, to the west by Tuscany and Umbria, and to the south by Lazio and Abruzzo. This geography accounts for the rich variety of Le Marche's food traditions. The first chefs of Le Marche assimilated recipes, ingredients, and techniques from visiting mariners from Greece and North Africa. In his debut cookbook, Trabocchi showcases his signature style of cooking—called "soulful and passionate—not pretentious" by Food & Wine—combining traditional elements of Italian cuisine with a contemporary European sensibility that draws on the many flavors he's experienced throughout his extensive travels and techniques honed at restaurants around the world. Hilarious fun for the Fabio fan
She was 18 not 12 When They Became A Couple!
UGH!
I agree with the reviewer that suggested this as kindling You have your stereotypical beefcake named Marco, who, whenever described, holds a striking resemblence to the supposed author of this book.Marco is your average Italian pirate/womanizer who is his own boss and even the boss of a quaint pirate island somewhere in the Caribbean where prostitutes are welcome to visit and have children with Marco's crew. Marco, on one of his escapades, comes across a rather dilapidated, almost-run-by-criminals island where he saves twelve-year-old Christina, who, upon first being introduced, doesn't appear half bad.Marco gallantly swoops her and her stereotypically annoying crone of a guardian, away to his island.Blah, blah, blah, six years pass. Marco still is an irritating, virtually one-dimensional character who has to walk through doorways sideways because of his overbearing muscles (I particularly loved his episode with the mercenary-like cook and her constant want of a raise, and how he said something along the lines of "Woman! You try my temper!"), while Christina has turned into a spoiled brat.Of course, she's a voluptuous, golden-haired eighteen-year-old who is lusted after by every memeber of the crew, so all her moral short-comings are overlooked.I swear, I have never come across a ...character.And not even in the good sense of the word. There were numerous occasions where I wished I could jump into the book, punch her in the face and then laugh at her while she cried for Marco because her hair got mussed and her immaculately tiny nose was now less than perfect. All in all, you have just about every stereotype imaginable. The steamy ... who thinks she can run the hero's life. The annoying child-turned-woman who thinks she owns the hero's life because of a frivolous promise, the ugly, bearded Spanish pirate rival, the heiress of an American colony company, and her jealous guardian who wants her dead so he can get the money. I think the only likable character was the darn cheetah, who, in a Sigfried and Roy-esque manner, was a pet.And she is oh-so nicely name...Pansy. Anyone who honestly enjoyed this book needs their head examined.I got it as a gag gift, and I couldn't even get through it all, and ended skipping parts. ... Read more |
9. Behind the Gate: Inventing Students in Beijing (Studies of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University) by Fabio Lanza | |

Editorial Review Product Description On May 4, 1919, thousands of students protested the Versailles treaty in Beijing. Seventy years later, another generation demonstrated in Tiananmen Square. Climbing the Monument of the People's Heroes, these protestors stood against a relief of their predecessors, merging with their own mythology while consciously deploying their activism. Through an investigation of twentieth-century Chinese student protest, Fabio Lanza considers the marriage of the cultural and the political, the intellectual and the quotidian, that occurred during the May Fourth movement, along with its rearticulation in subsequent protest. He ultimately explores the political category of the "student" and its making in the twentieth century. Lanza returns to the May Fourth period (1917-1923) and the rise of student activism in and around Beijing University. He revisits reform in pedagogical and learning routines, changes in daily campus life, the fluid relationship between the city and its residents, and the actions of allegedly cultural student organizations. Through a careful analysis of everyday life and urban space, Lanza radically reconceptualizes the emergence of political subjectivities (categories such as "worker," "activist," and "student") and how they anchor and inform political action. He accounts for the elements that drew students to Tiananmen and the formation of the student as an enduring political category. His research underscores how, during a time of crisis, the lived realities of university and student became unsettled in Beijing, and how political militancy in China arose only when the boundaries of identification were challenged. |

Great buy
This needs to be brought back in print!
I love Fabio but does Fabio love me? Other times I would try to put the whole concept of "Fabio" out of my mind so that I could get some sleep. But the idea would creep back into my head. I would be laying there at 3:00 AM considering (for example), the merits of the various long-distance plans that I had been made aware of by several polite callers over the course of the previous couple of weeks, when I could feel Fabio looming at the fuzzy borders of my consciousness. I would try to fight him off but all of a sudden there it would be - the image of Fabio fully formed in my mind's eye - in all his dubious glory. I talked the problem over with my psychiatrist. He was perplexed so he called two of his associates into the room to see if they could help make some sort of sense out of what I was telling him. All three of them are from Vienna. They all had cigars and they all happened to have long full beards. I told them of my dilemma - well my conundrum really - while the three of them sat in stony silence. I noticed that they all stroked their beards in what I am sure (in hindsight) was a subtle system of beard-code that they had worked out for non-verbal communication in just this type of situation. I had just gotten to the part about the long-distance rates when one of them fainted! I learned later that fainting is a common self-defense mechanism the human body employs in order to stave off terrible psychological pain and trauma. The others revived him and they retreated to a corner of the room to discuss my problem. They kept there voices low but I distinctly heard the fainter say "Crazy - just plain nuts"! His face was red and he seemed like he was angry and scared at the same time. The others calmed him and in about 20 minutes they decided on a course of action. After asking me if I wouldn't mind if they submitted this case for publication in a medical journal, my doctor said "Mr. Sprinkel it is, after all, just a few dollars. What is the worst that could happen? Be brave, take a chance. Buy Fabio and see if perhaps this will set your mind at ease". That was 12 days ago. What he said made a lot of sense at the time and I can understand the finer points of his argument but I still have this nagging doubt. My finger is over the "Add to Cart" button and I think I have just about come to the point where I can start to make a rational decision about the pros and cons of this gambit. Yes, yes I am just about there. I'm just going to take another moment to consider it all then I will certainly make a decision...

Editorial Review Product Description The black power movement helped redefine African Americans' identity and establish a new racial consciousness in the 1960s. As an influential political force, this movement in turn spawned the academic discipline known as Black Studies. Today there are more than a hundred Black Studies degree programs in the United States, many of them located in America's elite research institutions. In From Black Power to Black Studies, Fabio Rojas explores how this radical social movement evolved into a recognized academic discipline. Rojas traces the evolution of Black Studies over more than three decades, beginning with its origins in black nationalist politics. His account includes the 1968 Third World Strike at San Francisco State College, the Ford Foundation's attempts to shape the field, and a description of Black Studies programs at various American universities. His statistical analyses of protest data illuminate how violent and nonviolent protests influenced the establishment of Black Studies programs. Integrating personal interviews and newly discovered archival material, Rojas documents how social activism can bring about organizational change. Shedding light on the black power movement, Black Studies programs, and American higher education, this historical analysis reveals how radical politics are assimilated into the university system. |

Editorial Review Product Description Recounted here for the first time is the adventurous life of Frederick Catherwood, the 19th-century English artist who discovered the lost Mayan cities in the jungles of Central America and the Yucatn plateau. In 1839 Catherwood and his American companion, John Lloyd Stephens, were the first Westerners to view the immense terraces, fabulous temples, and elaborate palaces that had been inexplicably abandoned ten centuries earlier. Superbly illustrated by Catherwood, Stephens' lively travel diaries recounting their extraordinary archaeological discoveries were published in 1841 and 1843. Using these journals and his own extensive research, author Fabio Bourbon has pieced together Catherwood's fascinating biography, which until now has been shrouded in mystery. Illustrating this handsome large-format book are more than 200 engravings made from Catherwood's original drawings. Also reproduced is Catherwood's Views of Ancient Monuments in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatna rare color portfolio considered to be his best work. Catherwood's other adventures are also describedhis first trips to Europe and Egypt, his later expeditions to Central America, and finally his experiences in California. This intriguing book about an intrepid adventurer/artist will appeal to anyone interested in exploration, architecture, and archaeology. 208 illustrations, 191 in full color Customer Reviews (5)
