A must have for short story fans.
This collection of short stories is nothing short of amazing.Please treat yourself to these underrated and terrifically "performed" pieces.Of particular note is the title piece "Star Quality." Mr. Coward, using his keen wit and history in the theatre, writes ahumorous, touching, and biting story of a play from it's beginning toopening night introducing many memorable characters on the way, from theaging diva, to the gay writer and director (interesting since I believe theworks were written pre-Gay Lib).Bitchiness reigns supreme.If you like"All About Eve" you will certainly enjoy this story as well asthe others on the tapes. ... Excerpt: Denholm Mitchell Elliott, CBE (31 May 1922 6 October 1992) was an English actor of stage and screen, with over 120 major film and TV credits.. Elliott was born in London, England, the son of Nina (née Mitchell) and Myles Laymen Farr Elliott. He attended Malvern College and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. In the Second World War, he joined the Royal Air Force, training as a sergeant radio operator and gunner and serving with No. 76 Squadron RAF under the command of Leonard Cheshire. On the night of 23/24 September 1942, his Handley Page Halifax bomber took part in an air raid on the U-boat pens at Flensburg, Germany. The aircraft was hit by flak and subsequently ditched in the North Sea near Sylt. Elliot and two other crew members survived and he spent the rest of the war in a prisoner of war camp in Silesia and during this time became involved in amateur dramatics. After the war, he made his film debut in Dear Mr. Prohack (1949). Outstanding Bryan Forbes Film
George Segal shines in this very good prisoner of war film as Cpl. King, KING RAT. George Segal shines literally while all the Allied POWs (mainly British) in the Japanese prison camp are reduced to rags, malnutrition, and disease and exposed to all the ill effects of a jungle environment. Only George Segal seems to remain immune. He is a natural born survivor wheeling and dealing his way with the Japanese guards and intimidating the British officers to succumb to his whims. If you want something Cpl. King is your man. The story scripted by director Bryan Forbes and based on the novel by James Clavell is quite interesting if not fascinating. How can a lowly Cpl. King carry so much clout?That is at the heart of this film. King is not only a survivor but also a chauvinist of the first degree showing or having little affinity with his fellow prisoners. This is perhaps George Segal's finest performance. George Segal is the very cold and calculating King right down to his ironed shirts and well manicured fingernails. George Segal is a strange fellow as well taking a liking to Flight Lt. Marlowe played by James Fox. Fox's performance is equally interesting as the well-bred and highly educated Lt. Marlowe who remains unaffected by his own background and is intrigued by Cpl. King. Lt. Marlowe posses the one thing that King will never have, that being social status back in civilian life, and that keeps King intrigued. The acting all around is very effective and convincing. In addition to George Segal and James Fox the strong cast includes John Mills, Patrick O'Neal, Denholm Elliott, Tom Courtenay, James Donald, Todd Armstrong and Richard Dawson. I particularly liked the black and white cinematography by Burnett Guffey which received an Academy Award nomination and John Barry's minimalist score depicting the despair and hopelessness of the less fortunate prisoners. Also, the script worked on many levels making it appealing to a wide audience. I found this film to be both entertaining and thought provoking on both a practical and moral level. I think this is director Bryan Forbes best work as it truly is outstanding. It is shame that Bryan Forbes has gone so unrecognized as a great director since he chose to concentrate on writing after leaving a post as head of production at London's Elstree Studios. ... Pretty bad
Having read many tales of the supernatural (my favorite being Dorothy Macardle's The Uninvited), I looked forward to reading this. But after a promising start, I was disappointed to find this book to be pretty dull and I skimmed most of the last 200 of 300 pages. It's a journal written by a crippled RAF airmen and his rambling discourses are sometimes very boring. The story could have been trimmed by 100 or more pages at least. It's not really a ghost story, either. Not recommended, and hard to understand how it has such a good reputation.

Supernatural Reading
I have the movie and when I heard that there was a book about it, I wanted to get it. I haven't read it yet but I am curious as to what happens in the book. Robert Pattinson plays Toby Jugg amazingly well.

Before you see the Movie, Read the Story of "The Haunted Airman"
Ok, I admit I looked this book up after reading comments regarding the Robert Pattinson film "The Haunted Airman"; normally, a movie does not lead me to a book, but rather the other way around.I still have not seen the Pattinson movie, and after reading this book, I doubt the movie could be nearly as entertaining.

This book was a very well-constructed suspense story that, to my surprise, kept me guessing until nearly the end.Without giving out any spoilers, let me say that the title character, Toby Jugg, ends up in frightning circumstances that could cost him his sanity, his freedom and maybe even his life. The story never dragged or veered off-course with silly subplots or goofy romance.The reader stays trapped with Toby Jugg throughout his ordeal for the entire length of the story, and that is one of things I realy enjoyed about the book. I plan to read the rest of Dennis Wheatley's books; if you are looking for a relatively short and well written suspense story, you will enjoy this book.

Update:I finally got around to seeing the BBC film.The book is still better; the movie omitted too much of the story.Oh well.

Interesting Book
I had watched the movie The Haunted Airman which is based on The Haunting of Toby Jugg before I read it.I usually do not do that but I read that the book was way better than the movie (which it was) so I wanted to see what it was all about.I enjoyed the book very much even though it was tough to get through in some places.There was a lot of religious talk in it that I personally didn't agree with, but I didn't write the book and I know that I don't have to agree with the opinions of others.Anyway, all in all I enjoyed the book and the interesting twists and turns that took place.It was a good read.
