White Sox Fan - Must Read
Excellent book for the real White Sox fan. Wonderful picture, great stories, personal profiles. Honest look at a wonderful, but sadly flawed organization. One of the few honest portrayals of both the Comiskeys and Bill Veeck and how both really undermined this franchise. Hope springs eternal on the South Side. They certainly deserve more success in the future after their long and mostly tragic history.

I enjoyed the book thoroughly. It should be in every White Sox Fan library. It's a wonderful follow up to the first edition. Hopefully Richard Lindberg will keep updating this book every few years.

Newsroom Lore to the n-th Degree
I found that I wasn't as interested in the author's connection with leaning about and reporting the Kennedy murder as I was reading about the adventures he experienced as he felt his way into figuring out how to operate what was then an entirely new medium - the television newsroom.

That in itself is more than worth the time to read Eddie Barker's Notebook.

And every single person who has accepted broadcasting as his life's work should study and accept as his own, Eddie's formula for integrity in news reporting.He advances it plain and bluntly here, so there can be no reason for the reader to say he doesn't understand it.

I don't know Eddie personally, but like millions of others did, I knew his TV work back then.It's nice to read his accounting of those times and his career.

Good story, mediocre writing
Eddie Barker's claim to fame is that he was the face of CBS TV news in Dallas in the 1960s, including during the Kennedy assassination.Since I grew up in Dallas at that time, I was excited to hear this veteran newsman had written a memoir.

Barker says that he admires those who work in print journalism and regrets that he never did. Reading his book, I regret it also - the book is almost totally lacking in overall narrative, consisting of 2 or 3 page vignettes from his career, written in short, choppy sentences.The book has this utter lack of style in spite of being co-authored with an East Texas college professor.

Despite the lack of literary value, however, I greatly enjoyed the stories about Dallas' colorful characters, from Jack Ruby to exotic dancer Candy Barr.Also, since Barker was in the TV business from the beginning, I also enjoyed his insights into the way things were done in the early days.For example, TV stations sometimes received films of football games without sound, and a local announcer would do live play-by-play as the film was broadcast.Recommended for those who want some insight into Dallas of the 1960s and the early days of TV who can ignore the juvenile writing.

I love the book I got, BUT I only ordered this book to be able to get free shipping and the other book was for my 13 year old daughter she still has not recieved her book. I have said in an email to continue to look for it but have not heard anything in about 3 weeks????? So am I happy with my book yes am I happy with Amazon NO. Ultimately disappointing
Let me first say that this is exhaustively researched. Wilkerson has seemingly found every word that Townshend's ever uttered, as well as everything that's ever been written or said about him. But that's basically where the value ends. There's precious little new insight here; the book functions as a 500-page clip job of existing material. Townshend is admittedly a famously contradictory character, and a tough nut to crack, so I wish Wilkerson was able to get some more new insights from Pete himself. As it stands, I think you get a better picture from Townshend (at least through the mid-80s) from Dave Marsh's definitive Who biography, "Before I Get Old."

A must for Who fans
Densely packed with detail on Townshend's life, most Who/Townshend fans will want to snap this up. Who fans should bear in mind though that this is not a history of the band, and has obviously has a focus on Pete alone. The picture quality is not great, and I would have appreciated more detail on how Townshend actually crafts his songs and any guitar related info, but thats my bias! Its a hefty read, but well worth the effort.

Good book... kind of OK
Very well written book by someone who is obviously a great Who fan. In difference from most other tomes on The Who it doescontain a lot of new information on the group and Townshend inlater years and is in that aspect really up-to-date. Indeed, it does in that sense not frustratingly focus on the years surroundingTommy. In that sense it complements really well the other available books such as the one by Dave Marsh. It also does focus somewhat more on the solo work that Townshend has produced which is really nice. Of course again it suffers from being written by a fan who does not allways have enough perspective. It does however contain data from new interviews conducted by the author. This also gives the book a fresh approach missing from most similar books.
Of course it is not written by a master as Dave Marsh and it does come over slightly amateurisch at times but it is refreshing. However for a subject as complex as Pete Townshend, and this is a book about him, there is very little on his life, especially very little is revealed about his wife and divorce and the only quotations come from other already known sources so in that sense it is frustrating because by being too much of a fan book it treats its subject with too much respect again. here again a new book written by a more biting British rock journalist would be wellcome. I suppose however they would not be interested and have, unfortunately, written Townshend off. this is unfortunate because the man has on and off been able to demonstrate that the can still produce some great music and the recent return to form of the live Who is proof that there is still life in the beast. Also the bok, if it is about a musically important subject as PT should at least try to go into detail about some of the stuff that would interest the nerdier contingent of his fan base such as his gear and songwriting. It is well to describe some stuff how it was conceived but it does fail to go into the more daily routine of the songwriting process.
