Macabre masterpiece
The bravery of a hero.The savagery of a psychotic killer.This classic conflict between the hero and the heinous criminal has formed the basis of comic books and graphic novels since their beginnings.However,in The Green Woman graphic novel, written by Peter Straub and Michael Easton, illustrated by John Bolton,the line between hero and fiend is, at times, very tenuous.As Jules, one of the characters in the book, perceptively points out , "It's easier to destroy the good inside than it is to fight the bad that's all around you."The central conflict of this graphic novel, as with many classic works of literature, is between the good and evil aspects of the soul, represented here by the characters Fielding Bandolier, war hero turned serial killer, and Bob Steele, the brave alcoholic cop tormented by his inner phantoms,One confronts the darkness within and either becomes engulfedby it or manages to subdue it.But the darkness never completely goes away.It lurks in the foundations of the psyche, manifesting also as an evil presence haunting and possessing buildings, such as the Green Woman and the Black Galleon pubs featured in the story.It assumes the power of an obsession, a violent consuming hallucination which summons all the darkest regions of the subconscious.It becomes a devouring demon demanding obedience and carnage.

Michael Easton has made me a fan of graphic novels, after my reading them the first times when I got his "Soul Stealer" series and became captivated by the merging of art and literature that he and Christopher Shy did so well with Easton's love story, combined with battles through the ages, and Shy's unique art style beautifully illustrating the love and pain of those characters.When I learned Michael was doing another graphic novel with legendary horror novelist Peter Straub, I could not wait to see what that might bring to the genre!Now, I'd like to see all Peter Straub's novels with graphics to go with the amazing stories!In this one, fans can see the two writers' talents, styles and specialties merged for something to savor like never before!



Straub and Easton have written the ending to Straub's Fielding "Fee" Bandolier character, a long time serial killer, pursued this time by detective Bob Steele, named after a cowboy movie star.Steele is a damaged detective, with good instincts, who drinks and hooks up with women, accidentally marrying one in Atlantic City, Jules, who turns out to be a good mate for him in spite of all the wildness.Bob Steele is on the case of a so-called virgin killer who kills young women and dresses them in white.In Steele's chase, he finds the virgin killer in Ireland at a pub that just happens to be made of wood from the same ship that the wooden green woman, in The Green Woman bar back in the US, came from, that's the haunted hang out of the aged Fee who's got a wannabe serial killer successor named Billy who comes to the deserted old bar as well.The evil entity, that talks to Fee in the old midwestern bar of bad guys from 100 years back, where he sees and hears his victims over the years, even has an evil supernatural effect on Bob Steele, across the ocean in the Irish pub, where it also talks to Steele.On the former ship, where the wood from the Irish pub originated, the shipmates had gone insane and murdered each other.Detective Steele's supernaturally altered Ireland actions got him some time off, until he was called by his former partner about the murder of an Asian woman, reminiscent of Fee's slaughtered yet beloved wife in Vietnam, that leads him to Fee in a spectacular finale.



I cannot imagine any fan of Straub's or Easton's missing out on this blood-tingling dark adventure of stories within stories so masterfully written!As a decade long fan of Easton's, I was delighted by references from names in Easton's life and career, lines from his "One Life to Live" character, as well as "Soul Stealer", and a line with the title of his poetry collection.It's a fun read just catching those, add the intricate detective mystery and horror aspects of this story, and it's a perfect indulgence, especially now at Halloween.I actually thought I might save my copy for a haunting Halloween read, but once I opened it, there was no way to resist!



Straub and Easton dedicated this novel to Robert S. Woods, their great friend who portrays Bo Buchanan on "One Life to Live".Having been a fan of Robert S. Woods since I was 16, I was moved by the dedication, and even that made me have to halt everything and read this book!I think one of their reasons for the tribute, besides love of a dear friend, is probably that Bob is a Vietnam War hero, and they did a great story with amazing illustrations by Bolton from when Fee was a sinister soldier in the Vietnam War.Also, Robert, as Bo Buchanan, has been working on compelling murder mysteries for quite some time on the daytime drama "One Life to Live"!



All in all, the 3 geniuses involved in making the "The Green Woman" have a 5 star work of art here that I hope gets turned into a 5 star movie one day.With the graphic novels, as I first realized from Easton's "Soul Stealer: Book One", you get all the benefits of a great movie, and the pleasure of actively participating in the experience.It would take more phenomenal brilliance to ever make a movie as good as this graphic novel.In the meantime, I highly recommend reading "The Green Woman" for a wicked thrill ride like none other!

I purchased both of Michael Easton's books.I was disappointed with both.I thought I was purchasing novels, not 'comic books'.I hadn't read anything to tell me this was a comic book.I won't purchase the third one when it's finished.

The "Mind of Michael Easton" would be a fascinating place to explore!As revealed in the book, Easton's mind houses complex thought processes woven together to spin the tale. "Soul Stealer" is the most unique novel I've ever read. Are you kidding me?
I love Michael Easton's characters on Soap Operas. That's why I searched for his books; however, I've never been so disappointed in anything I've ever purchased.Nowhere did I get the idea that this was a "DARK" 'comic book'.I thought it was a novel.One review said it was a wonderfully illustrated 'novel'.That's what I thought I was purchasing...a novel to read.I won't buy the third issue.Sorry, Michael, I didn't enjoy it.There is a terrific story behind the dark sketches, but a few paragraphs here and there is not a novel.

Unsettling beauty

Michael Easton does an amazing job with his writing/story telling and Christopher Shy does the most beautiful/amazing art work I have ever seen!! Together these two put out there a graphic novel that once you read the book's you will not be disappointed with your purchase and will be left wanting more!! I eagerly await the arrival of the third book!!

THE MIND OF MICHAEL EASTON - REVIEW OF SECOND INSTALLMENT OF SOUL STEALER
The second installment of SOUL STEALER - BLOOD AND RAIN - TIME HEALS NOTHING - brings a return trip to the "MIND OF MICHAEL EASTON"!This second trip again takes us into the creases and crevices of that mind.EASTON again takes us on a complex journey through time as Kalan is still seeking for lost love Oxania.

This writer's thoughts focused on the title and subtitle of the book - BLOOD AND RAIN - TIME HEALS NOTHING!What connotations could have EASTON thought of to bestow this title on the book?

This writer took a bit of time to focus and reflect on the Biblical sense of blood and how it could have intertwined in the thought processes of EASTON.I truly believe there are similarities to the mention of blood in the Bible to the use of blood in the book.Blood in the Bible is used from beginning to end to represent people, to show death, ancestry, sacrifice, the power of God, the love of Jesus, and of course redemption.The Book of Leviticus describes the value of blood - "For the life of the flesh is in the blood:and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls:for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul" (Chapter 17: Verse 11)

As in the Bible, blood was shed during trials and tribulations.Biblical characters such as Daniel were taken into the lion's den, through the fiery furnace.EASTON conveys these types of metaphors as Kalan continues through his own set of trials and tribulations in order to reach Oxania.Kalan, through bloodshed, through unimaginable and immeasurable pain, keeps his eyes on the prize!That prize is grabbing the soul of Oxania and making her one with him!What a prize that is, huh!

The subtitle of the book - TIME HEALS NOTHING.As this writer was reflecting upon these words, it came to me that yes, time on earth really does not heal anything, especially when one loses the love of one's life, when our souls are so lost that we would do anything to reclaim that love.From personal experience, and from losing the love of my life, my husband Ken, I can certainly relate to Kalan's journey.I seek my own prize when it is time to join Ken in Heaven!Oh what a day of rejoicing that will be!What a prize that is, huh!

LAST TO DIE - the third installment in the SOUL STEALER trilogy - will complete the journey.BLOOD AND RAIN didn't quite reach the prize.Will EASTON choose to have Kalen find that prize?Will EASTON bring Kalan through the fiery furnace unscathed this time?Will the finale echo the title?Yes, love never dies, that deep abiding love that can sometimes make our hearts and souls ache.We think we cannot breathe without that love.This writer loves happy endings and would write it herself if she could.I intend to realize my prize and I hope Kalan reaches that ultimate prize as the trilogy is over.

Complimenting EASTON's words is his artistic collaborator, CHRISTOPHER SHY.I continue to be enthralled as SHY illustrates what came out of the "MIND OF MICHAEL EASTON"!EASTON most assuredly captured his own prize in SHY.What a prize that is, huh!

Blood and Rain absolutely amazing!
Blood and Rain is even more amazing than is the first book of the trilogy, which I didn't think was even possible.Christopher Shy's artwork is beyond compare.I found myself torn.I was anxious to turn the page and see what dark and mysterious world the next page brought me to, but hated to leave the page I was on because the story had me hanging on every word.Which segues nicely to the story itself.I'm forever fascinated by the workings of a mind that can produce a story that unfolds quickly enough to keep you interested, but slowly enough to torture you with the need for more. Michael Easton's writing style does just that.His words bring you through such intense drama, such heart-wrenching sadness, such complete joy, that you are positively riveted by them.And, coupled with Chris Shy's magnificent artistry, the book Blood and Rain is a feast for every sense. ... Best Poetry Book ever written by a wonderful actor and Man
I recently picked up a copy of this book. I have been a long time fan of Michael Easton since his days on Port Charles. I usually don't read too much poetry, but this was exquisitely written and beautifully articulated by this wonderful actor and writer. This being the story of Michael Easton's life during his "dark time", it is a must read. It truly allows you to look into the soul of Michael Easton and get to know a little about the man himself. TRULY BEAUTIFUL!

i don't really care for poetry, but i do enjoy michael easton on "one life to live" and have been curious about this book since i first heard of it a couple of years ago. i wondered if the darkness he personally experienced while coming of age was what he draws upon while acting out intense scenes.
i think i have my answer. the book can be dark, but enlightening all at once, and i admire him for putting it down on paper for all to see. it would be wonderful if everyone that had experiences such as these could rise above them and become an expressive, functional human being.

Honest and Real Poetry
I usually like more traditional poetry, Donne, Keats, Shelley, but Michael Easton has written a beautiful, real and honest book of poetry about his life.It is not all hearts and flowers but very powerful and moving nonetheless.I hope he finds the time and the muse to write another book of poetry.His honesty and truth were quite refreshing.

Comprehensive; a bit dry
This book is mostly balanced, but strongly accuses Kerry of being an elite oppertunist. What person with political ambition isn't? You kind of have to be. But they go overboard.
Other than that, this book is a highly informative read. The prose is a bit dry, borrowed from their newspaper chronicles largely, and can be laborious to get through. It is the content that makes it worth while, even if they try to steer you at times.

The fairest attempt to portray the great John Kerry.

Seems decently balanced to me; well worth reading
John Kerry has had some real accomplishments, and the book lists those. He's not perfect -- if nothing else, he's long focussed on the presidency as an end goal, not a means to an end -- and the book reports on that, too.

Comprehensive, Fair, and Detailed. Excellent Read.
As with other readers at Amazon.com I wanted a quick introduction to Kerry. I knew essentially nothing about him other than what is in the news. So I bought the Douglas Brinkley book "Tour of Duty" about Kerry in Vietnam and the present book. When I got the two books, it seemed that the current book is a little less biased and shorter 400 pages versus 500 pages for the Vietnam book, so I read it first. I have still not read the other book as of today. I just read "Tony Blair' by Philip Stephens and in many ways that is quite a different story and unusual story. Kerry has had a stronger relationship with the military because of his experiences in Vietnam and later working in the US Senate. Few politicians can claim live fire combat as can Kerry. That seems to have set a certain tone in his life.

In any case this is definitely a well researched and written biography by three reporters from his home state - reporters from the Boston Globe. They claim to have double and triple checker their sources. According to the preface, the story started off as a series of seven installments in the Globe in the summer of 2003. The paper, being located in Kerry's home state, wanted to publish a comprehensive series of stories on Kerry. According to Martin Baron, the Editor of the Boston Globe who has written the preface, the stories were immediately attacked by the Kerry Campaign. Later the campaign acknowledged that it was largely an accurate portrayal. That series has been expanded by the three writers into this present book. All three had covered Kerry (Mooney since 1977) and had previously written detailed stories on the candidate even back to the time when he was an assistant DA in Middlesex County. So by any reasonable standard the authors are well qualified and it shows in the book. Kerry did not help with the writing of the book and declined recent interviews. Overall I would call the book neutral in tone - just good reporting and writing. In addition to the roughly 400 pages of text there are 30 pages of notes.

As a book I found it to be engrossing and I was able to quickly run through the 400 pages. My attention was continually held. It is a page turner but not strongly so.

Kerry comes from an interesting background where his father's side of the family is second generation from Austria while his mother is related to the Forbes and Winthrops, the latter having a history dating back to almost the start of the Massachusetts colony (John Forbes Kerry). There is a family tree in the book going back three generations. His father was in the foreign service and has in fact acted as a sort of consultant to John Kerry; he did not pass away until 2000. Because of various foreign service postings such as Berlin, Norway, etc. by his father, Kerry traveled around Europe as a child and attended a school in Switzerland. There he was exposed to more European languages and culture than the average young American boy. But other than that he seemed to live a relatively normal youth including playing in a rock band. He did not inherit large amounts of money or a large trust. In fact one relative paid for his tuition at St.Paul's prep school near Boston.

The book covers his youth, education at Yale, his marriages (not much time spent on his personal life), the swift boats in Vietnam, his medals in Vietnam, and then his career back in the US after Vietnam. From there we follow his race for Lieutenant Governor, Senator, his fight for re-election against Governor Weld in 1996. The latter was a very difficult campaign that Kerry managed to win only by 7% riding on the coattails of Bill Clinton, but he did win against a very tough opponent.

Without trying to show bias one way or the other, Kerry comes across as a strong individual that has faced death many times serving his country with honor in Vietnam, a war that killed some of his friends. In politics he made many strong political alliances in the past to win elections - such as with Mayor Flynn of Boston. In the senate he took on unpopular issues such as Nicaragua and was partially responsible for directing investigators to look into the illegal activities of Ollie North and others. For that he was vilified as being somehow weak or soft on communism in the press, but eventually he was proven to be correct. Kerry does not come across in the book as an elitist or someone with a personality problem. He is ambitious and has been interested in politics since his youth - but I think that would be expected from a US Senator. In any case this book gives a lot of information on Kerry in an entertaining and a compelling read. You will not be disappointed.

Excellent book that is well researched and written. Five stars.

This book attempts to accurately portray the life of John Kerry, which it does wonderfully.

Informative though a little dry
I enjoyed this book.I agree with other reviewers that it was a bit dry in places and seemed to sail along at a fairly quick pace.It gives a broad view of Kerry's childhood, education at Yale University, service in Vietnam, and then goes into quite a bit of detail about his Senate Career and then race for the White House.A great book for any student of Political Science or just anyone interested in learning about a person who has led an amazing life. ... "Soul Stealer 3: Last to Die", the end of the graphic novel trilogy by Michael Easton and Christopher Shy, is like the delectable dessert after your enticing appetizer and fabulous main course that were "Soul Stealer 1 & 2"!I say that after reading the 3 back to back for the ultimate feast of Easton's riveting story-telling and Shy's exhilarating graphics, which only improve as they bring us the climactic conclusions for their uniquely fascinating characters in "Soul Stealer 3: Last to Die".The heroic Kalan has his one track mind that cares about little more than finding his lost love Oxania, and getting her back from his nemesis Apis Bull; but as his bud Altimus and other wonderfully wise characters make him see, they are going to have to defeat the evil Kreimchild who has destroyed the paradise and hell of the story and enslaved innocent souls.There are Immoratalis who have been protecting a gate that they expected Kreimchild would eventually get through and destroy them all.Kalan is the chosen one who the wise ones know is their most likely savior; thus giving him a big, new mission whether he liked it or not.In "Soul Stealer 2: Blood and Rain", Easton's story spoke of both good and evil, coming from the same place, having something to prove.We learn more about that in this third book, with a very satisfying revelation about the mostly good Kalan and mostly evil Apis Bull.

Having enjoyed the somewhat Biblical themes in the story, I was pleased that there is redemption, forgiveness, and bad being eventually turned around and used for good.There are some magnificantly illustrated David and Goliath type scenes when Kreimchild made himself "bigger and badder" towering over our hero Kalan.While there are battles with heartless brutality, Easton maintains his beautiful depiction of the grandest eternal love theme throughout.

When I first had to give "Soul Stealer 3: Last to Die" a quick read (during the actual book release weekend), because of the cliffhanger that left me starving for it; I was impressed by how especially sexy Shy drew the women this time.Their male characters were sexy as well, as much as some of them could be missing eyes, and patched together and such, still like super heros; but the women, Oxania, Lasa, Ravlam, and the female Immortalis, were beautiful and more super heroine-like.Oxania reminded me of a sexy cat-woman in a scene in the first few pages.

In recommending Easton and Shy's "Soul Stealer" trilogy, I must say that I wanted this beautiful art and literature at my alma mater so much that I bought and donated copies, as well as initiating a project for fans to donate copies to other university and public libraries in honor of the author.I truly felt this trilogy to be a genuine and new masterpiece of our time, giving it's readers one deeply heartfelt emotion after the other until "Soul Stealer 3: Last to Die" answers Easton's question for Kalan and Oxania, "How far would you go to get back someone you love?".Not a detail was left forgotten as Easton tied up his story for all the characters in a very satisfying, poetically perfect conclusion; though I could imagine more, for at least a couple of the characters, should he ever decide to delight us and revisit his captivating story again!

A must read-- and a work of art
I really enjoyed reading this book as well as the prior 2 in the trilogy.Michael Easton and Christopher Shy have created a work of art.The words and imagery work seamlessly together to bring this romantic, yet haunting and tragic story to life.It was riveting, imaginative and so beautifully written and designed.As a fan of romantic novels, this was a new way for me to experience a love story and I was captivated the whole way through.

resplendent and enigmatic
Last To Die, like the two preceding graphic novels in the Soul Stealer trilogy by Michael Easton, transports us into infernal realms of resplendent beauty and sublime insight.Easton 's vivid, poetically intense, concise prose wastes no words in depicting the eternal battle betweenthe demonic, soul-draining forces of darkness and the heroic but intrinsically flawed Kalan.In this war, no one is spared anguish or contagion. To destroy the monster, as Kalan wisely points out, one must become it.To reunite with his beloved Oxania, Kalan must confront self-shattering truths. Enemies must discover their common origin, working together to struggle against the poisonous powers threatening them all.

Brilliantly envisioned, the Soul Stealer trilogy intermixes ancient mythological imagery with contemporary film-noir archetypes (Oxania as femme fatale assassin, Kalan as world-weary cynic doomed by his love for her).Within the sinister subterranean depths, nothing is ever as it seems. Characters shape-shift, assuming other forms, stealing identities and souls.Chief among these soul-stealers is the chameleonic, diabolical, charismatic Kreimchild (a play on words, perhaps of "Crime Child"?), one of Easton's most intriguingly macabre creations, a primordial being who can only assume physical existence by feeding on sin "until matter forms."

As with the previous two Soul Stealer books, illustrator Christopher Shy masterfully brings to life the terrifying yet alluring regions ruled by selfish, amoral, sadistic gods.Sunsets bleed with flesh-flayed offerings; dark blue obliterating skies swallow the lights and shadows of urban civilization as chaos smothers human systems of order.

Although the Soul Stealer trilogy presumably concludes with this third installment, its ending is as compelling enigmatic as the dreams and nightmares that haunt our darkest imaginings.It leaves us thrillingly unsettled, enthralled.
