4-0 out of 5 stars Great for teaching children the basics of sailing
I read this this book to my 4-year old daughter, Sarah. She loves it, and has learned some important sailing concepts from it. We are building a live-aboard sailboat, and have been very concerned about child safety. After reading _Sarah's Boat_, we find her playing sailboat in the back yard, coming about and ducking the imaginary boom! She has been able to stand on a beach and judge the direction of the wind, and predict whether we could take a straight course to the opposite shore, or whether we would need to tack. She gleans this knowledge from what she considers a bed time story. I wish there were more books like this! ... Read more

Product Description
Come back home to God! A central theme in John Wesley's writings is salvation. He urged people to become and continually grow as committed disciples of Jesus Christ. His appeals and reasoning are just as relevant in the 21st century as in the 18th. ""Wesley's 'Way of Salvation' is a road map of the journey of humanity toward God,"" writes the authors. ""It's a pathway of grace in which we respond to God with increasing self-awareness of our separation and our need to come back home. Our aim is to help people understand and apply Wesleys teachings to their lives...and to transform them from being 'almost Christians' to being 'altogether Christians.'"" The authors are passionate about returning to the roots of Methodist tenets of salvation. Covering biblically based doctrinal topics such as sin, grace, justification, sanctification and ethical living, Reclaiming the Wesleyan Tradition explains Wesleyan theology in an easy-to-understand way. The book's format makes a dense 13-week study especially accessible. Margin notes highlight excerpts from Wesley's sermons, hymns and journal with the authors providing context and analysis of the themes. Daily reading and writing assignments are designed to open theological discussions and to deepen spiritual growth. Wesley's words can reshape your daily walk. Expect to be spiritually awakened and brought into a deeper communion with God while celebrating a powerful legacy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rediscover theological riches!
Reclaiming the Wesleyan Tradition offers a short course in the practical teachings of 18th century British preacher John Wesley. Instead of spending time writing abstract theology, Wesley's theological insights are found in his sermons, which have not been the easiest pieces of literature to read since they are written in the voice of an 18th century Anglican priest. The authors of this book make the language real, providing commentary, guidance, and a most important glossary. They also suggest daily readings and ways to engage in the study within a small group, which is a very Wesleyan approach as well. My group and I gained fresh insights into our own lives of Christian faith from this 18th century preacher. ... Read more

Product Description

The most ancient and least disturbed forest ecosystem in eastern North America clings to the vertical cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment. Prior to 1988 it had escaped detection even though the entire forest was in plain view and was being visited by thousands upon thousands of people every year. The reason no one had discovered the forest was that the trees were relatively small and lived on the vertical cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment. The Last Stand reveals the complete account of the discovery of this ancient forest, of the miraculous properties of the trees forming this forest (eastern white cedar), and of what is was like for researchers to live, work and study within this forest. The unique story is told with text, with stunning colour photographs and through vivid first-hand accounts. This book will stand the test of time as a testament to science, imagination and discovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Worthy of its Subject
Anyone who knows the forests of eastern North America has to have a soft spot in her heart for the arborvitae, or northern white cedar (eastern white cedar to these Canadian authors). Its grace, its fragrance, the beauty of its ropy bark and foliar sprays, and the deep green that contrasts with the hardwoods it mingles with -- all set it apart as a conifer of special qualities. The Native Americans thought so, and used its foliage, its scent, and its ashes as cures for whatever ailed them. This evergreen species was never considered a long-lived tree. In its moist flatland habitats it seldom exceeds 400 years of age, and those trees are mostly long gone. But in the 1990s the authors of this stylishly-written book constituted the "Cliff Ecology Research Group", started dangling from ropes off the edge of cliffs of the 400-plus-mile-long Niagara Escarpment, and were bewildered to encounter dwarfed, contorted, stunted, kinky, and barely alive white cedars growing from cracks in the limestone cliff faces. No other trees shared this habitat. Not only were these trees present, they were also very old. Like up to and beyond a thousand years -- at maximum 1320 years right now in 2007. Working out of Ontario's Guelph University the authors and a band of grad students conducted serious and fruitful ecological and physiological research on the cedars that grew upwards, downwards, straight out, or in all combinations of these orientations, held in place only by the tenacity of their roots ramifying through cracks in the limestone. The story of this research is told here in a text that is often chatty, always straightforward, frequently humorous and sometimes sublime. For flavor, here is Peter Kelley describing a 1213-year-old cedar rooted in an incredibly narrow crack in the rock: "The entire root system of this cedar is therefore crammed into a space just a few millimetres wide but within a sprawling area of unknown extent stretching back and into the cliff face. Its root system is sandwiched between two massive blocks of dolomite like a treasured leaf pressed for safekeeping between the pages of a book." Now that is fine writing.

Mixed in with accounts of author Larson checking out cliff faces in Europe and the U.S., and discovering old cedars and other species older than the locals imagined, we are treated to Kelly's experiences with bees, ants, vulture chicks and poison-ivy while spinning out of control at the end of a tether. There is detailed information on Indian medicine and mythology regarding the cedar, nutrition and water conduction in the trees, and much more. Kelly's photos (70 in color!) and his exquisite sketches of numerous individuals rooted in the rock, as well as some archival photos, illustrate the book sumptuously. There are chapter notes, a bibliography, and an index. The only downside to reading this lovely book is learning that the vertical old-growth forest of cedars is endangered in places by the quarrying of limestone and the selfish behavior of rock climbers to whom a millenium-old tree may be just an impediment to their heroics.
This is a tree book to be savored. ... Read more

Product Description
She flew the swift P-51 and the capricious P-38, but the heavy, four-engine B-17 bomber and C-54 transport were her forte. This is the story of Nancy Harkness Love who, early in World War II, recruited and led the first group of twenty-eight women to fly military aircraft for the U.S. Army.

When the United States entered World War II, the Army needed pilots to transport or "ferry" its combat-bound aircraft across the United States for overseas deployment and its trainer airplanes to flight training bases. Male pilots were in short supply, so into this vacuum stepped Nancy Love and her Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS). Initially the Army implemented both the WAFS program and Jacqueline Cochran's more ambitious plan to train women to do many of the military's flight-related jobs stateside. By 1943, General Hap Arnold decided to combine the women's programs and formed the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), with Cochran as the Director of Women Pilots. Love was named the Executive for WASP.

Nancy Love advised the Ferrying Division, which was part of the Air Transport Command, as to the best use of their civilian WASP ferry pilots. She supervised their allocation and air-training program. By example, Love won the right for women ferry pilots to transition into increasingly more complex airplanes. She checked out on twenty-three different military aircraft and became the first woman to fly several of them, including the B-17 Flying Fortress. Her World War II career ended on a high note: following a general's orders, she piloted a giant C-54 Army transport over the fabled China-Burma-India "Hump," the crucial airlift route over the Himalayas.

Young women serving today as combat pilots owe much to Love for creating the opportunity for women to serve. Now author Sarah Byrn Rickman, aviation historian, presents the first full-length biography of Nancy Love and her role in the WAFS and WASP programs. Her book will appeal to all with a love of flight. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nancy Love's biography
The book's title, "Nancy Love and the WASP Ferry Pilots of World War II" is a little misleading. I suggest it would be better tilted as a biography of Nancy Love because: 1) the book covers all of Nancy love's life; and 2) The pages on the Wasp ferry pilots is limited to Nancy's role in that organisation.
The book is detailed and a very interesting read for those whom have an interest in Nancy, and it should also interest those whom wish to discover some of the problems that faced a capable woman-pilot during World War 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem of a book I discovered accidentally
An excellent book from the point of historical accuracy with full footnotes, bibliography, and exhibits. But,it is also enjoyable reading as a pure biography providing insights into the complexities of a wartime marriage with lengthy separations. The postwar trials of the Love family, while not unusual for a relationship of any duration, add depth to the story and make it more than just another World War II, or Rosie the Riveter book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The high-flying life of Nancy Love
"Rickman's delightful writing style transports the reader right into the high-flying life of World War II pilot, Nancy Love. A compassionate, yet honest, focus on the human side of our hero makes this a captivating and educational read. Detailed research, including many first-hand interviews, gives Rickman a commanding grasp of her subject. Warfare, aviation, women's rights and family matters all join together for a portrait that informs and inspires."

5-0 out of 5 stars Swell story of a spunky lady pilot circa WWII
One who chooses to read this story presumably is interested in the subject matter. It is, indeed, a compelling story of a young woman who wanted to fly since riding a in barnstormer's plane as a teenager.Bartering and bargaining her way through flight lessons, she parlayed her love of flight into a job as head of the Women's Airforce Service Pilots of WWII.Along the way, Ms. Love managed to have a happy and fulfilling domestic life as well.
Ms. Rickman wrote the story based on hours of interviews and intensive document research. She did a great job of making factual/historical a good entertaining read.I laughed out loud at more than a few passages and felt a range of emotions as I read of the trials, thrills and perils of flying in the forties.Included are many nice photos showing the fashion of the day."Ladies" wore dresses, silk stockings, and heels to pilot those airplanes.Imagine working the pedals and controls dressed like that. Sarah Rickman transports us in space and time with her vivid descriptions of open cockpits, near misses, and battles with the "boys' club" mentality.I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating biography of a truly extraordinary woman aviator.
Award-winning author Sarah Byrn Rickman presents Nancy Love and the WASP Ferry Pilots of World War II, the fourth installment of the "North Texas Military Biography and Memoir Series" published by University of North Texas Press. Nancy Love and the WASP Ferry Pilots of World War II tells of the women who served their country as ferry pilots when the United States needed them most, during World War II. A trailblazing figure for women's service in the military along with her rival Jacqueline Cochran, Nancy Love was a dedicated and determined aviation enthusiast and served admirably as the Executive for the unified women's programs under the name Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). Extensive notes, a glossary of military and airplane terms, and an index round out this captivating biography of a truly extraordinary woman aviator. ... Read more

The writings of six choreographers are assembled in this book and the leap they have taken to go from the medium of choreography into written text constitutes a form of translation. Some of the texts investigate the possibilities of written language as invention, others use it as a means to illustrate specific tenets or describe choreographic projects. All yield insight into the process of coaxing language from the body. ... Read more

Product Description

In the past decade, there has been a convergence of transdisciplinary thought characterized by geography’s engagement with the humanities, and the humanities’ integration of place and the tools of geography into its studies.

GeoHumanities maps this emerging intellectual terrain with 30 cutting edge contributions from internationally renowned scholars, architects, artists, activists, and scientists. This book explores the humanities’ rapidly expanding engagement with geography, and the multi-methodological inquiries that analyze the meanings of place, and then reconstructs those meanings to provoke new knowledge as well as the possibility of altered political practices. It is no coincidence that the geohumanities are forcefully emerging at a time of immense intellectual and social change. This book focuses on a range of topics to address urgent contemporary imperatives, such as the link between creativity and place; altered practices of spatial literacy; the increasing complexity of visual representation in art, culture, and science; and the ubiquitous presence of geospatial technologies in the Information Age.

GeoHumanties is essential reading for students wishing to understand the intellectual trends and forces driving scholarship and research at the intersections of geography and the humanities disciplines. These trends hold far-reaching implications for future work in these disciplines, and for understanding the changes gripping our societies and our globalizing world.
