Product Description

From the foreword by Dr. Douglas Kerr, Director, Johns Hopkins Transverse Myelitis Center

"The Autoimmune Epidemic by Donna Jackson Nakazawa is an astounding book....It is the kind of book that will rivet you and scare you. It will make you angry. It will amaze you with the courage of some of the people described in the book...The Autoimmune Epidemic is every bit as compelling as Upton Sinclair's The Jungle...It is also every bit as necessary as An Inconvenient Truth....

You will leave this book with no reservations about the veracity of the conclusions: put simply, there is no doubt that autoimmune diseases are on the rise and increasing environmental exposures of toxins and chemicals is fueling this rise. The research is sound. The conclusions unassailable....

Reading The Autoimmune Epidemic is a necessary first step. Reading The Autoimmune Epidemic is a life-altering event. It needs to be." ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Less than objective
The author's personal connection to the topic may make her less than objective on the facts she reports. The examples and studies she cites are startling, however, she presents no opposing viewpoints. As a health care professional who also experiences autoimmune issues, I found this book to be informative but also a bit alarmist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking and a tad scary
I definitely enjoyed this book. It's been out for a few years so I'm sure that there is some newer information and studies that could be included, but overall I thought that it was an interesting introduction to Autoimmune Diseases, the research being done on them, and the potential causes of them (some of which may lead to a scary surge in numbers over coming years).Lightbulbs certainly went off for me on a few topics when reviewing possible causes.I'd recommend this for anyone interested in autoimmune disorders, medical research, and science non-fiction.It can be a bit dense at times with scientific terminology - I enjoy that stuff, but it may be a slower read for some.

5-0 out of 5 stars should be required reading for all
I'monly 100 pages into the book so far, and find it both fascinating and scary. It is clear we have our work cut out for us going forward to keep this epidemic in check. The author does a great job in making the science accessible to those with little knowledge of the immune system. I think it should be required reading for every student in medical school.

4-0 out of 5 stars Treating the Epidemic
Yes this book is timely but it does not address the solutions we as physicians can not practice in our current health care model. As physicians in practice the system as well as the pateare forced to treat symptoms and that is what created the epidemic in the first place. It is the short sited use of medicating our patients, overuse of antibiotics, ignoring clear signals of serious progressive disease to use palliative treatment for cost saving and expediency that got us here in the first place. It's a numbers game treat the patient quick, don't do extensive lab tests to truly understand the syndrome.

I dropped out of that model years ago and now can stop the insanity. Examine, understand, treat and retest monthly if necessary - until I'm able to slow or reverse the progression of these syndromes. In order to do this I now work for my patient not their insurance companies, yes I see a lot less numbers but I can go to bed at night knowing the patients are responding within months even weeks. The sad part of this is those millions and millions of patients without proper treatment lose cognitive function so they can't complain or picket.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book - Made me understand why I have more than one of these diseases and how I got them
This book was delivered as promised via Amazon.com. I could not put the book down for a few days until I read it. It told me everything I wanted to know about Autoimmune diseases and more, and gave me much more appreciation for my Rheumatologists Doctors Philip Sedrish and Marielisa Sedrish at Gulfcoast Rheumatology at Slidell Memorial Hospital. They have been doing everything like clock work with me and I have been a very trying case for especially for Dr Philip Sedrish. These doctors are definitely experts in Rheumatology and all the other Auto-Immune Neuromuscular and Skin Diseases such as (RA, PM, DM, IBM, Sjogrens, Scleroderma, Lupus, ALS, etc...) that go along with their specialty. They referred me to the best specialists: Dermatology - Dr Eric Tabor; Cardiology - Dr Ignatius Thomas; Pulmonology - Doctor Dennis Dale and Doctor Janine Parker; Opthamology- Dr David Slagle; Gastroenternology - Dr Anthony Albright. These doctors all work well with each other and me to address all my symptoms associated with Dermatomyositis, Sjogrens, and Psoriasis. Thanks to these doctors, I have not had to drive 100 miles a trip to the MDA Clinic at Children'sHospital in New Orleans or even further as may others end up doing.

Thank you to the authors of this book and my friends from The Myositis Association, Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis forum.

I recommend this book to anyone diagnosed with a Auto-Immune Disease and associated Cancer.

Product Description

General Douglas A. MacArthur's extraordinary life of leadership spanned three wars and more than six decades inside and outside the military. He defined principles of leadership that were decades ahead of their time: principles reflecting extraordinary wisdom about strategy, motivation, organization, execution, and personal growth. Now, Theodore and Donna Kinni distill 52 powerful leadership lessons from MacArthur's life. On MacArthur's command, millions of American soldiers risked their lives. After winning the peace in World War II, he led 80 million citizens of Japan to embrace the most radical and successful cultural change any nation has ever achieved: the transformation from militaristic emperorship to modern democracy. Those extraordinary achievements arose directly from MacArthur's singular approach to leadership.  This book reveals what MacArthur knew about defining victory and setting the right priorities for achieving it; building sleek, fast-response organizations; inspiring subordinates to unprecedented performance; focusing relentlessly on results; transforming organizational culture to value speed, knowledge, and honor; pursuing personal excellence; and winning.

4-0 out of 5 stars The business success lessons in this book have been battle-tested...literally!
Much of modern business management theory and leadership philosophy was born out of battlefield necessity during actual military campaigns of the 20th Century. Even common business language such as strategy, tactics, mission, operations and resources were co-opted from the armed forces, which show relevant parallels between the needs of business and actual battle. In the book titled - "There's No Substitute for Victory" - author Donna Kinni explores the life and leadership practices of Gen. Douglas MacArthur - arguably one of the greatest leaders the U.S. has ever had.His more than 60 years of service went far beyond his military career into education, public administration, consultancy and business.According to Kinni, MacArthur was one of only five, five-star generals in the history of the U.S. Army and his principled-based leadership style was revolutionary. Soundview recommends this book because some of MacArthur's driving principles were the value of the individual within the context of a team; the need to respond quickly; lean organization; esprit de corps; and a relentless focus on results. Regardless of how you feel about war and conflict, these ideals all sought to resolve disputes quickly with minimal losses and maximum outcomes. These lessons are battle-tested (literally) and can be used by virtually anyone and any organization. Don't engage your enemy without it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Management as Myth
To use MacArthur as a management model is a corruption of the term. What next, Risk Management by Admiral Kimmel and General Short. The writers of this book obviously have never reviewed the General's career and his actions. Since when as megalomania, persecution complex and wishful thinking been part of a managers curriculum?

From the pathetic lack of preparation against air strikes in the Phillipines, despite having adequate warning, to the woeful disregard of Chinese intentions in Korea this mans record was spotty at best. Other men died to keep his ego alive.

There are better books with much better and more deserving role models.

4-0 out of 5 stars Management advice - plus war stories
The stereotypical military general wields authority like a blunt instrument: Issue an order and it's followed. The reality of military leadership is more complex, as this intriguing study of General Douglas MacArthur shows. MacArthur took a deliberate, nuanced approach to inspiring his troops. His arsenal included motivation, knowledge, intimidation, praise and self-deprecation. Authors Theodore and Donna Kinni combine a short biography, compelling anecdotes and a keen understanding of MacArthur's career and personality to build this episodic analysis of his approach to strategy, motivation and management. They include relevant study questions after each chapter. We recommend this to managers who need to take their leadership skills to boot camp and to those who enjoy good military tales.

5-0 out of 5 stars He Came Back
I am a bit of a World War Two history buff so of course I have read a number of books about the involvement in any number of campaigns that MacArthur was involved in.That is why I was excited to read this book.I had always heard that MacArthur was considered a great leader and here is the book that tells you exactly why he was considered as such.MacArthur was one of our nation's preeminent military leaders with a career that has rarely been equaled. Not only was he in the military for want was almost his full life, but his military accomplishments stand out as one of the most accomplished in the U.S. military history.

This book covers the basic principals that made MacArthur not only a great military leader, but as a leader overall. The authors tell us that there were three founding components of successful long term leadership. They are values, vision and proficiency. They argue that great leadership is first and foremost moral leadership.Values guide us in our actions and the authors tells us that many of the scandals he hear about on the news are when leaders put aside the morals of the situation.

Overall the book describes many of the skills and talents required of leaders. The authors detail why each of the skills are important and how MacArthur developed and used them. The book is interesting and at times exciting.Given I also have an interested in his military career the book was doubly interesting. You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life Distilled to 50 Leadership Lessons
General Douglas MacArthur was in many ways a man ahead of his times. His life of leadership spanned more than six decades.

Theodore Kinni and Donna Kinni introduce a new generation of students to 50 leadership lessons that guided his life. They can be adopted no matter what the goal or challenge.

The lessons fall into five categories:

1. Define victory . . . and purse it relentlessly.
2. Use all your weapons - especially speed and surprise.
3. Start on the right foot: take command, establish trust.
4. Personal resolve and language have power.
5. Enduring values and constant learning transform institutions.

MacArthur lived a life of extraordinary achievements. The 50 lessons give a rare insight into what MacArthur knew about goal setting and building lean, responsive organizations, leadership, performance and focusing on winning results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dear Donna, It's only 45 Hours from Bien Hoa
Well written book! While it is a work of fiction, it is very fact based, and has reminded me of many things that happened in Viet Nam.While the subject itself may not be that appealing, it has enough humor mixed with the element of fact to make the book very enjoyable to read!

5-0 out of 5 stars The gut-wrenching personal account of a year in Vietnam
Dear Donna It's only 45 Hours from Bien Hoa by Douglas Neralich is the gut-wrenching personal account of his year in Vietnam. An elementary school teacher turned Army medic, Douglas was only twenty-two when called to serve his country as part of the 36th Engineer Battalion, stations at Vinh Long, in Vietnam in 1970. The vignettes presented are both gripping and horrifying, sometimes gentle, sometimes cruel, and taken altogether form an unforgettable picture of the war in this engaging memoir. Enhanced with occasional pencil sketches, Dear Donna It's only 45 Hours from Bien Hoa is a welcome and recommended contribution to Vietnam Military History collections and reading lists. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I truly liked this one - just a few brief comments
Although it seems that most of the reviewers commenting on this book were not totally convinced, I did like it very much and for one reason:each member of the dramatis personae was three dimensional for each one hid some sort of personal difficulty or trauma and each dealt with it in a a serious and adult manner not usually found in short form regency novels.I liked it because each character had to examine him or herself deeply to identify and overcome motives coloured with suspicion of self and others.I felt that the interaction of the various couples/combinations was well drawn. The sexual tension was well portrayed and, I think, realistic. And, of course, the ultimate surprise was the story of the hero's much adored aunt - certainly her own heart required a great deal of self-examination for her life was so nearly wasted.

All in all, I thought this was Donna Simpson's best effort thus far.It is not particularly an easy read and one could easily be frustrated over the behaviour of the various characters. But, in the end, it was a very mature, well drawn look into the hearts and minds of a group of people I personally found exceptionally interesting.None has an easy journey to happiness but you feel that you know and understand them when the story ends. Not "lite 'n' fluffy" - it takes some degree of commitment to read but I felt truly rewarded when I came to the end.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good story - but claustrophobic
This book falls very much into the middle of being liked and disliked. There was much that was good, but there was much to counterbalance and drag it down.
The Duke of Alban, disillusioned with life, leaves Brighton to visit his favourite aunt. Alban is wary and cynical regarding women. His wife ran away with a lover and his most recent mistress was playing a double game with him. Three men accompany him, an old friend, a social acquaintance and a slight acquaintance who somehow tagged along. Unbeknownst to him, his aunt has become blind and very much needs her companion, Mrs. Kittie Douglas.
Kittie is a widow in need of employment, due to her dead husband's gambling. She has an unrealistically noble picture of Alban, as she has been reading his letters to his aunt. Of course he appears all that is good and she suspects she is more than a little in love with this idealised picture. Hardly surprising that she should immediately be strongly attracted to him when they meet.
He finds himself similarly drawn to her. However, his thoughts are not at all honourable. He feels torn between his instinctive desire to seduce her and his conscience telling him he should not, because of her position.
The second man, Lord Orkeney muddies the waters, by immediately flirting with Kittie.
Two friends of Kittie's then arrive to complicate relationships with the other two men. Spring might have been in the air.
Basically this is a story of how Alban and Kittie fight within themselves regarding their deep attraction. He wants her, but will not consider marriage. She wants him, but cannot reconcile herself to being a mistress - to her it is an insult and debasement.
Orkeney is all the time complicating the issue, on purpose as is obvious. He is lying to both of them. Alban may have wanted excuses to see Kittie as being open to being his mistress, but he does see behaviour that is strong evidence to that effect. Here Kittie is astonishingly stupid.
A strong story, but I really could not get to like Kittie and Alban more than tepidly. They were both so bristling with resentments and suspicions. Maybe being so privy to their thoughts made it a bit too claustrophobic.
There were also several secondary plot threads that were created and showed promise of interest, but then were not developed. A pity.
The ending was good and made up for some of the sluggish internalising of hero and heroine.
As usual Simpson recreates the era convincingly. The characters do actually think as such men and women of the period would have done.

3-0 out of 5 stars Unromantic
Kittie Douglas, a widow for 4 years and companion to Lady Eliza, is happy to find out Eliza's nephew will be visiting their Yorkshire estate. Over the years, Kittie has read his letters to his aunt, and she is intrigued by the very thought of him. She wants to meet the man whose late wife abandoned him. Could he really be so bad?

The Duke of Alban was hoping for a peaceful visit with his aunt, who he hasn't seen in 3 years. He and a few hanger-on friends travel to Yorkshire. But there are a few things Alban didn't expect. He did not know his aunt's companion was a beautiful widow, and he didn't know his aunt was blind. The duke has never desired a woman like he desires Kittie. Unfortunately, his friend, Lord Orkenay, has also set his sights on her.

Eventually, someone makes an offer that changes everything...

"The Duke and Mrs. Douglas" had its good points and bad points. I liked Kittie. She was willful and opinionated, but hardly overbearing. Those expecting a light-hearted Regency should look elsewhere, as this book is somewhat dark, and deals with some very serious issues. I also liked the fact that the characters were at least a decade older than the average romance characters. It was a refreshing change of pace.

Now, the bad points. I didn't care for the Duke of Alban. I thought he was rude, bold and prying. I don't think his interest in Kittie ever extended beyond physical attraction, and I certainly can't imagine why she liked him. In terms of romance, it was lacking. I thought some of the "secondary" plots were more interesting, though slighted. I was more interested in Kittie's friend's dalliance with a younger man. I would have liked to see more of Alban's saintly friend, Mr. Norton. The central characters often left something to be desired.

Overall, it's very average. In the past, I've read better from Donna Simpson. The book is somewhat weak, but it does deliver in certain areas. For instance, I was COMPLETELY blindsided by a twist in the end.

3-0 out of 5 stars okish read -- not up the usual standards though
Donna Simpson is one of the few authours who can (successfully) write a novel that almost exclusively focuses on the feelings and private thoughts of her characters and still not end up with the book that is either maudlin or awkward. It takes a real talent to write such a novel where nothing much ever happens save for the characters talking to each other and ruminating about the behaviour of others and themselves. Which is why I so enjoy reading Ms Simpson's novels. But this time around, I rather felt that Ms Simpson fell short of her usual excellence.

Feeling gloomy and having had his fill of the back-stabbing lot that surrounds the Prince of Wales, the widowed Duke of Alban decides to leave Brighton and repair to the North in order to visit his favourite aunt. And he takes with him his best friend, Bartholomew Norton, the Earl of Orkenay (not a very close or well liked friend) and another gentleman he knows little of, Sir John Fitzhenry. It's a trip in which he will reestablish his close link with his adored aunt (an aunt he hasn't seen in almost three years, not since he arrived broken over his wife's desertion), and spend time hunting and riding with his friends. But all his plans go out the window when he arrives to find that his aunt has hired a comely young widow, Kittie Douglas, as her companion -- a ravishing and voluptuous lady moreover who makes his pulses races with longing and desire. Can the duke, who had been seriously and publicly betrayed before trust that seemingly virtuous and tenderhearted widow is exactly what she seems? Or does the comely Mrs. Douglas have some conniving plan up her sleeve?

Part of the problem with "The Duke and Mrs. Douglas" was that the duke and Mrs. Douglas spend very little time with each other in a constructive manner at all. They both spend a lot of time thinking and obsessing about each other, but when they do converse, they are, quite frequently at daggers drawn and completely misunderstanding each other. So that when, somewhere towards the end of the book, Kittie laments to her friends about the duke's poor treatment of her esp when she had thought they were becoming friends, I wondered how she had arrived at this conclusion? When, exactly, had they become friends? Had I missed a few chapters somewhere? Kittie, actually spends more time with the cad of the group, and allows the man more liberties than a respectable widow would have (I thought), and I really wasn't too surprised that the duke got, and maintained, a certain impression of Kittie. Also, because the duke and Kittie never really establish any kind of relationship with each other (at least none that I could see aside from lusting for each other), the book does tend to stagnate a little.
