An important book
I worked on the Natchez Trace for two years and I had a hard time finding any scholarly information until I discovered this book.It was a godsend.It was one of the few things around that actually had footnotes!The more popular "Devil's Backbone" is awful-a good story, but no sources noted, making it impossible to follow up on what was factual and what wasn't.This book is well laid out; rather than chronologically, it was thematic, which worked well for me as a tour guide. Davis also did a great job debunking some myths, such as the number of people murdered by outlaws on the Trace.If you read any "stories" about the Trace, do yourself a favor and read this as well, for a little perspective.

Poor.
I like the majority of William C. Davis works but this work is not a good effort. It does not even begin to focus on the Natchez trace, does not adequately describe the impact of the city of Natchez on the early Southern frontier, ignores the separateness that characterized early southwestern America and barely touches on the existence of another road, the Military Road from Charleston to Mobile to New Orleans that had just as much impact on the settlement and development of this portion of the early southwestern United States. Whew, that was a mouthful!

Unfortunately, these are the high points of this book. The book is poorly written, disorganized and follows no chronological sequence. If you are interested in the fascinating history of early Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia, consider The Old Southwest, 1795-1830 by Thomas D. Clark and John D. W. Guice. It appears that many passages of Davis' book are lifted directly from it.

An excellent, readable, yet scholarly work.
Few books have been written on the Natchez Trace. Of those books, most focus on the lurid background of the roadway or on its current scenic beauty.This book provides a well-researched, scholarly, yet extremely readable look at the history of one of the Nation's most interesting early roadways.I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the Natchez Trace. Thomas Reid (1710-96) was one of the most daring and original thinkers of the eighteenth century. His work became the cornerstone of the Scottish School of Common Sense Philosophy, and was highly influential in nineteenth-century America; it also anticipated the thinking of such twentieth-century figures as Moore and Wittgenstein. Now, after a long period of neglect, his philosophy is again the subject of increasing attention across the world. For Reid, knowing about ethics is a matter of having 'good evidence' supplied by a sense-like moral faculty. William Davis's book shows how such a view can be both consistent and plausible in the twenty-first century. "Thomas Reid's Ethics" begins by characterizing the state of moral epistemology at the time when Reid was writing. It goes on to recount Reid's central claims about the moral sense, and describes the various problems that confront those who would explain and defend his views. Too generalized.
This is a short book, just over 100 pages in printed form and far too vague and general to be a lasting real interest.
The subject matter, Medieval Europe, needs a fuller more detailed study.
I skipped the pages on the crusades for instance as I have an excellent full length study, "God's War" (900+pages), already.
Medieval Europe is a free book of course, and if you know nothing of European history maybe you could start here. Otherwise give it a miss. ... Read more

Useful Reference for Consultants & IT Professionals
This book is a compendium of tools and techniques that are routinely used in one consulting engagement after another.The topics are standard fare and are covered in a plain, straightforward manner.

I use this book as an encyclopedia of techniques when I am searching for a method or procedure that fits a particular situation or requirement.I also use it as a refresher when I set aside time for professional reading.

What I like about the book is the wide range of techniques covered - everything from control charts to structured analysis is addressed, with an apparent bias towards project management techniques (crash mode analysis, PERT, critical path method, etc.) It also covers object-oriented techniques, database design and rapid application design.

I also like the fact that techniques are grouped into chapters under sections that cover Principles, Information Gathering,/Problem Definition, Project Management, Systems Analysis (some great material in this section), Identifying Alternatives, Design, Testing/Implementation, and Operations & Maintenance.This makes finding a particular technique easy to locate and to also place into the context of whatever project you happen to be working on.

Why four stars?The writing is dry, and in many sections too verbose.Also, there is a discernible difference in writing style between authors Davis and Yen, which could have been rectified by a good editor.Other than this minor complaint I recommend this book to consultants because it does provide a single source of reference material on a wide range of topics and techniques. ...
