Product Description
During a period of forty years I was intimately acquainted with Colonel Burr, and have reason to suppose that I possessed his entire confidence. Some time after his return from Europe in 1812, on different occasions, he suggested casually a wish that I would make notes of his _political life_. When the Memoirs and Correspondence of Mr. Jefferson were published, he was much excited at the statements which were made in his Ana respecting the presidential contest in Congress in 1801.

He procured and sent me a copy of the work, with a request that I would peruse the parts designated by him. From this time forward he evinced an anxiety that I would prepare his Memoirs, offering me the use of all his private papers, and expressing a willingness to explain any doubtful points, and to dictate such parts of his early history as I might require. These propositions led to frequent and full conversations. I soon discovered that Colonel Burr was far more tenacious of his _military_, than of his professional, political, or moral character. His prejudices against General Washington were immoveable. They were formed in the summer of 1776, while he resided at headquarters; and they were confirmed unchangeably by the injustice which he said he had experienced at the hands of the commander-in-chief immediately after the battle of Long Island, and the retreat of the American army from the city of New-York. These grievances he wished to mingle with his own history; and he was particularly anxious to examine the military movements of General Washington on different occasions, but more especially at the battle of Monmouth, in which battle Colonel Burr commanded a brigade in Lord Stirling's division. I peremptorily refused entering upon any such discussion; and, for some time, all communication on the subject ceased.

Colonel Burr, however, renewed the conversation relative to his Memoirs, and agreed that any thing which might be written should be confined to himself. With this understanding I frequently visited him, and made notes under his dictation. I never asked him a question on any subject, or in relation to any man or measure, that he did not promptly and willingly answer. On his part there was no desire of concealment; nor did he ever express to me a wish to suppress an account of any act of his whole life. So far as I could judge, his only apprehensions were that "_kind friends_," as he sometimes termed them, by attempts at explanation, might unintentionally misrepresent acts which they did not understand.

I devoted the summer of 1835 to an examination of his letters and papers, of which there is an immense quantity. The whole of them were placed in my hands, to be used at my discretion. I was authorized to take from among them whatever I supposed would aid me in preparing the contemplated book.

Product Description

In 1896 William Randolph Hearst sent journalist Richard Harding Davis to Cuba to observe the guerrilla warfare being waged against Spain and to inquire into reports of atrocities. Hearst wanted to boost circulation of his recently purchased New York Journal by filling his paper with accounts of rapine and brutality.

Initially, Davis noted in his articles that fighting, as in most wars, created unpleasantness, and neither side deserved accolades for decency. Nevertheless, Davis proved influential in drawing the United States into the war when he began to condemn Spanish actions in print. His anger at Spain stemmed primarily from Spanish boardings of American vessels in Cuban waters rather than from the supposed atrocities that other reporters were vigorously documenting—or making up entirely—to stir up anti-Spanish sentiments in the states.

This Bison Books edition of Davis's influential 1898 book, beautifully illustrated by Frederic Remington, traces a journalist's abandonment of objectivity and serves as a cautionary tale of the media's—and the public's—susceptibility to grossly sensational accounts of death, pestilence, famine, and war.

From the depths of catastrophe, a glimmer of hope

After the capture of Coruscant, the mighty heart of the New Republic, a stunned galaxy fears that nothing can stop the Yuuzhan Vong. Still, that crushing defeat produces one small miracle: Jacen Solo is alive. Yet he can scarcely imagine himself in stranger circumstances.

The young Jedi Knight is in the care of Vergere, a fascinating creature of mystery and power, her intentions hard to fathom, her cruelties rarely concealed. But this master of inscrutable arts has much to teach the young Jedi . . . for she holds the key to a new way to experience the Force, to take it to another level—dangerous, dazzling, perhaps deadly.

In the wrong hands, the tremendous energies of the Force can be devastating. And there are others watching Jacen’s process closely, waiting patiently for the moment when he will be ready for their own dire purposes. Now, all is in shadows. Yet whatever happens, whether Jacen’s newfound mastery unleashes light or darkness, he will never be the same Jedi again. . . ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I really didn't like any of the NJO series.
I have read almost all of the SW universe novels... and the NJO series was painful to read. By far the worst SW-EU noel series (and of course the longest). I only read this series because I started reading the Legacy of The Force series that came after the NJO and those books kept referencing back to things that happened during the Vong war that I didn't know about... so I read the NJO series... almost every book in this 19 book series was boring, poorly written, predictable and incredibly dry. I would only recommend reading this series if you are just DYING to know what went down in the war word-for-word. If you can live with the abridged version, look it up on Wikipedia or something and find out the main details.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life, the Universe and Everything
The entire reason that I eventually began reading Star Wars books in the first place was because of a couple other Matthew Stover works set within the universe: Star Wars, Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Shatterpoint. Both are fantastic, creative and visceral novels: none of the qualities that I'd ever expect from a Star Wars book. There is always that temptation, you see, to fall into the movies' way of telling a story in this universe. To have Jedi triumph over Sith, Light against Dark, Wisdom over Passion. As I have quickly learned over the course of these novels, and finally through this entry, TRAITOR, these clashes are almost meaningless, because the Force knows none of these aspects. It is all a lie, as well as the truth.

Though I had heard many good things about this book, the only reason I hesitated for so long was because TRAITOR is Book 13 in the New Jedi Order series. I had no real interest in reading the previous iterations, save for the introductory novel by one of my heroes, R.A. Salvatore. But curiosity eventually got the best of me, I started reading and I certainly don't regret picking this up so late in the series. Stover does a lot to make sure everyone is up to speed, and that his story doesn't necessarily rely on the NJO storyline too much - but even if he was, I certainly couldn't tell. I was rarely, if ever, lost.

The story begins with Jacen Solo imprisoned inside the Embrace of Pain, a torture device that does its job very, very well. He isn't told exactly why he's being held, or tortured, or kept alive for that matter. In addition to this, his connection to the Force has been severed, removing the one stable aspect of his life. All that he is told, he is told through one of his captors, one of the Yuuzhan Vong who insists on speaking to him in cryptic messages that make absolutely no sense to him at the time. Over the course of the book, he is given over to new ways of torture: some natural, unnatural, and even self-induced, all in the name of a purpose which he is never made aware of but is of galaxy-wide importance.

TRAITOR is Matthew Stover at his absolute best. There is no wasted space here, he keeps everything moving and it never lets up. He's an author who has much to say, and in a condensed form as this he's a force to be reckoned with. Despite its length, nothing seems rushed. The action is intense and, true to Stover form, as bloody as LucasBooks would likely allow. And Jacen Solo, a character who I had never read about before, is easy to sympathize with; he shares the reader's idea of what a Jedi's role should be, and is justifiably crushed when it all comes toppling down. And given Stover's talent for allowing his reader to feel what his characters feel, it makes for a very emotional ride.

This story, like KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC and Stover's own SHATTERPOINT, is one that I never expected to find in the Star Wars universe. It plays at not only our preconceptions of what a Jedi should be, but what the true nature of good and evil might be. It poses a lot of questions, most of which aren't restricted just to Jacen to answer. The whole book is an epistemologist's playground.

This is definitely one of my favorite books now, without question. It has action, but the drama is top notch. And while it's brief, it has a lot to say - most of it is a lie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pain, betray: a must-read for everyone, not only Star Wars fans
The more I read through this series the more I belive it could perfectly be a completly apart collection, not necessarily Star Wars. Anakin learned in "Edge of Victory" how to copy with the abscense of the Yuuzhan Vong in the Force and not judge only by the sides of the Force or a whole race. More than this, he was very near to reach something... something very important for the Jedi philosofical problem and for the war. Then he was killed in "Star by Star".

What is learned in pain, always remains etched stronger. That is what "Traitor" shows us. I had been expecting for years the arrival of the book to my country, hoping to find out the revelation. The last step on Jacen quest. I had a lot of expectetions. Everyone said the book was great. Well, finally i picked up the English version. It was. A spectacular book, very inquisitive... perhaps with a too-much open end.

Jacen at last lives the present and stops his future ethic to land on the reality. A reality of pain and accion, were nothing will be the same it was (Coruscant). Jedi filosofy runs out for him, and captured, he will have to end his passivity. In real world the fight for the inocent is alive, even when it requieres killing.

But has Jacen clear the limit and the difference when he progresses on his quest? It's curious the use he makes of the slaves, or how he controls the sentient worldbrains, to finally fight the Vongs. At last he realize and accept that they must be fought and that (a word, a feeling or a two-sides Force) there are some "dark" accions neccessary in war. Jedi use them too, they are Jedi despite their occasional hipocresy. But not everything is permisible. It's not defense or attack, but objetive agressor and inocent people. And you can't generalize or have a single jugment way (the Force and its sides). You can't kill innocents eitherfor the "greater good". Filosofy of Vergere is ambiguous and dangerous.

Jacen choose at last. Liberty and implication es a key factor in our own paths. Will it be the same good Jacen in the future wven when he states he "has no enemies"? "Everithing is a lie". Well a perfect Jacen, a perfect book and Ganner... well, the same. You must read it with "Edge of victory" to realize the whole Vongrevelation. Pure philosophy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing
This is the best book i have ever read. Period. It answers practically every question, it provides an all encompassing UNIQUE way of looking at life. And not just Star Wars life. Practically everything said is applicable to real life. It has warfare, psychology, philosophy, amazing (and believable) character development, gut wrenching turns and love.

4-0 out of 5 stars The breaking of Jacen Solo
Four books after the devastating events of Star by Star (Star Wars: The New Jedi Order, Book 9), we finally get a chance to see what became of Jacen Solo in Traitor, the 13th volume in the massive New Jedi Order series. Unfortunately for Jacen, things aren't looking too good. His brother Anakin was killed and he remains a prisoner of the Yuuzhan Vong, tortured regularly in an attempt to break the young Jedi. The Vong have plans for Jacen, but the mysterious creature Vergere has plans of her own, guiding Jacen along a path to the Force that calls into question everything we previously held to be true about the ways of the Jedi.

This fast-paced novel was certainly an entertaining read. After all, who doesn't love a good prison break story? Vergere's manipulation of Jacen as well as his Yuuzhan Vong captors only adds to her enigmatic appeal, and Jacen's on the Vong ship and the devastated Coruscant are the stuff of legend. He never chooses the path you might expect, and the results of his actions may just be the beginning of the end for the Yuuzhan Vong invasion.

While author Matthew Stover definitely tells an interesting story, the execution is at times too high-brow for its own good. There's a fine line between clever prose and self-importance, and that line is crossed a few times in Traitor. This is a sci-fi action/adventure story after all, not high art. His handling of Ganner Rhysode seemed clumsy and out of character until the epic events at the end of the book, and even those deserved a more thorough telling. Still, you can't help but be impressed with the way he handled Jacen Solo and Vergere, and to a lesser extent Nom Anor.

All told, Traitor is another worthy addition to the New Jedi Order saga, and unlike Dark Journey (Star Wars: The New Jedi Order, Book 10) it should have a wider impact on events in books to come.

From the supplier: Ishmael Reed's 'Flight to Canada' is an improvisation and rearrangement of African-American history and depends on the thought of William Wells Brown, one of the best-known authors of ante-bellum slave narratives. Reed's emphasis on the literary strategy of anachronismand his belief in Neo Hoo-Doo recall Brown's, as does his lack of faith in Canada. Both refuse to allow themselves to be limited by historical fact, although Reed adheres to the spirit of slave narratives.
