An interesting read, not written very well
I first heard about "The Manhattan Madam: Se..." etc listening to the Lazlow show. I was intrigued by the Kristen Davis interview, and on a whim imported the book over from the States (I currently reside in the UK). I found that 60% of the book was an interesting insight into the way escort services are run and how the prostitution business is operated, the other 40% was too "personal" in my opinion. Obviously, this is a personal book constructed from the authors first hand experiences. However, I purchased the book to understand a bit more about what drives some men to prostitution and what kind of women are involved, not for a grim insight into how dull and shallow the author's personal life was/is. If you are the same, I recommend you skip the last few chapters!

It's not written very well either, the language is simple but sometimes the grammar is "off" a bit and you have to re-read a sentence a few times for it to make sense. Don't expect very descriptive writing either, the author seems to have a very narrow descriptive vocabulary! This sadly detracts greatly from the level of reader "immersion", but as earlier stated the writing is simple, making it an easy (and quite quick) read.

To summarize, its relatively cheap and overall an interesting read. Worthwhile picking up if you are interested in the subject matter :-)

it was well written from a woman who was educated but learned some hard
lessons in that you don't get involved with the people you hire.You find
out what it means to be both smart but also dumb.She makes a good point
in that life has a double standard and we all know that.

Honestly Moving
I recently attended an event featuring the authors of this book. I haven't read the book yet, but if the book is as genuine and insightful as my impression of the authors, I am sure it will be one that I will treasure always.

Real, touching, intimate and about what really matters
I am so tired of bad news, of discouraging information, of a prevailing feeling that we as a people, as families, as a country have little hope of surviving the pit falls around us. This book is written by real women,speaking the truth about the real issues we all face. Yet in their opennessand honesty there is a sense of hope, commitment and true unconditionallove. The message here is to do the right thing by those you love. It isn'tinstruction on how to be the perfect parent, or how to model yourself afterthose celebrities that our country is so enamoured with. Disagree strongly with previous negative reviews
I think the author was treated unfairly in the some of the earlier reviews. They must have been referring to the older editions of the book.The current edition of the book does talk about the new 529 plans without becoming an accounting textbook.What I likeabout Davis' treatment of the subject is the "you can do it yourself" approach instead of being a referral tool to financial advisors. Especially valuable is the worksheet on federal financial aid which gives one the ability to see how changes in one's finances can change computed financial need.Most financial aid websites just give you a grand total without explaining how the numbers were calculated. This isn't a book for those who love mind-numbing detail, but it is a good basic guide for getting started with a college savings plan.

This is a new edition, published in September 2001
This book is terrifically up to date. I wonder how the three people who gave it one star reviewed itfive months before it was published. If they'd read the current edition (or any. I wonder just who these three people were who all happened to have reviewed the book on April 6. I smell a rat.), they would have found it to be wonderfully current, well written, comprehensive. Anyone with kids--whether teens approaching college or tots--would benefit from this book.

Don't Waste Your Time or Money on Tired Stuff
Should be called "Financing College in the 1990s."But it's now 2001 and a lot of the suggestions in this old clunker of a book just don't hold water any more.Lots of free web sites run by state treasurer's office will give you current advice on newer college investing plansand it's free.Also check out Nellie Mae or Sallie Mae which are not-for-profit organizations that arrange for money so that kids or adults can afford to go to college.Skip this book however because it's N-O-T worth it.

Poorly Written and Stale
I didn't notice that this insipid book was published more than three years ago and a lot has changed since then!

Tax-advantaged college savings investments have improved--some have even been created--since this stale book was written.Even qualifying for financial aid isn't what it was back in the old days when this book was published.

This author should either update this relic or stop selling out of date advice.In the meantime check out the multitude of free web sites that give better and also current advice.

NOT HELPFUL -- Out of Date Advice
Many of the college savings plans as well as the rules for qualifying for financial aid have changed substantially since this book was written three years.

This old book caused my kids to lose out on money that they could have gotten:

1) It doesn't even mention many of the new and improved college savings and investing plans that are now available.

2) And the rules for qualifying for financial aid have changed significantly since this book was published so this bookomits viable options. ... Read more
