Product Description

Paul Darrow's career has encompassed theater, television, and film. Famed for his portrayal of ruthless and calculating computer expert Kerr Avon in Terry Nation's science fiction series Blake's 7, Darrow has also appeared in Coronation Street, Emergency Ward 10, and many other productions—including two guest appearances in Doctor Who. Populated by familiar names and productions, this is Paul's own story of his life and career. It tells of his association with Blake's 7—how he was cast, his experiences of making the show, what has happened since, and his memories of Terry Nation, the cast, and the crew. It also tells of his childhood, his time playing Elvis Presley, and his near miss with James Bond.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, A Delightful Book!
A wonderful book that I couldn't stop reading. His life has been as interesting as the character he played on Blake's 7 (one of my favorite shows of all time and the reason I bought this book). In many ways a look back at a more pleasant time in our history as seen by a very talented actor and an interesting character in his own right.

5-0 out of 5 stars Paul Darrow is quite funny!!!
Quite funny is this Autobiography by Paul Darrow. Mostly concentrated on his professional career, but he adds relevant aspects of his personal life as well. Highly reccomended for fans of Blake's 7.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Value than just Blakes Seven
Of course I bought it because I was an avid fan of the Blakes Seven TV series. And, like many, intrigued by the characters of the protaganists. Particularly Kerr Avon, as played by Paul Darrow. However the book received one of my highest accolades - "a two o'clock in the morning" read. I stayed up as late as that to turn the pages, and I'm getting older and need my sleep!

It is a deeply interesting memoir, not only of Blakes 7, the making of the show, the other actors, but of Mr Darrow's own life. Which he shares with us up to the age of 17, when he decided on his career, and largely limits himself to professional recollections afterward. Which is great when one is an actor and has another persona, indeed several. As the other reviewers say, it is like chatting to the man, so easy, pleasant and personal is his style.

As he points out, Blakes 7 was a four-year stint in a forty-year career, but he is fated to be remembered as the memorable, anti-heroic, character he created. Not so bad a fate! A rewarding read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lord Darrow, indeed...!
Being a huge fan of Blake's Seven, I was rather anxious to read this; not disappointed in any way! Mr Darrow has led an altogether interesting life, and his writing style lends itself quite well to telling us all about it. It reads less like a book and more like talking to him over dinner and drinks. Overall, a must for any fan of Blake's Seven and anyone with interest in British culture and dramatic history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful!
I purchased this book as a gift for a fan of the Blake's 7 series, and then read it first, to make sure it would be an OK gift.I did not expect to be absolutely delighted by Mr. Darrow's autobiography. Not only is his life very interesting, but his manner of writing is extremely charming, full of wit -- surprisingly friendly and intimate.I felt like I was having dinner with an old friend who had the best stories to tell.I highly recommend this book to fans of autobiography (not to mention Blake's 7 fans!), the theatre, and just pleasant reading.Thank you, Mr. Darrow! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A Terrible Book
Prequel book for the character of Kerr Avon in Blake's 7 (BBC scifi from the 80's).

I love Paul Darrow, I love the character Kerr Avon.Blake's 7 is one of my favorite shows of all time, the writing and dialogue were great!
I was dying to read this book when I finally got it.
Now, I would still recommend it to die hard Blake's 7 fans who want the backstory on Avon, but to no one else.

The writing (despite it being Terry Nation & Paul Darrow's creation) is not that great. The portrayal of women is horrifying. They are all one dimensional sexual objects. The book contains the worst (and some of the more sexist) descriptions of sex I've ever read.[Think Robert Heinlein's misogynistic portral of women].I'm not saying they had to make Rogue Avon seem like a sensitive guy or anything, but his going around 'banging whores' and then killing them is not really what I was looking for in the book.A terrible disappointment.
I finished it just so I could get the full story of Kerr Avon's past.

And now I must geek out and say I was also a little puzzled at the fact that the end didn't quite match what Kerr Avon told Del Grant had happened in the episode "Countdown".Terry Nation wrote that episode and Paul Darrow uttered the dialogue - so why couldn't they keep the stories consistent?Granted I haven't seen a few episodes of season 3, so maybe this is explained later...

1-0 out of 5 stars zero stars
Blake's 7 was an exceptionally well-written series. This book (by far) does not live up to that standard.Avon deserves a good-quality past.

3-0 out of 5 stars Avon's Legacy
I enjoyed this book very much. I was a new fan of Blakes 7
When I bid on a copy of Avon A Terrible Aspect at a Fan convention charity event. Author and Actor Paul Darrow very
graciously autographed my copy...
I wanted to see the character Avon through the eyes of the
actor who portrayed him. I was not disappointed. It was an interesting read.My favorite TV show Blakes 7 and my all time
favorite character Anti-hero Kerr Avon were explained in a way
which brought me full circle as a fan and arm chair adventurer.

1-0 out of 5 stars If the category existed, I would rate this book Minus 3.
Poorly written, stomach-churning potboiler, masquerading as science fiction. The writers of the B7 series would have been appalled, as were many of the faithful fans at this effort. The science is laughably inaccurate, the plot is pure 30's pulp and the characters are disgusting and bear little resemblence to how they appeared in the actual BLAKES 7 TV series. I've read far better fan fiction in this series universe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
Mr Darrow has captured the essence that creates Avon.Power, adventure, and love all twist together to produce the background of the man we grew to admire. This book maps out the road that Avon follows and brings fullcircle many questions left unanswered in the series.Thank you for yourachievement. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A classic ahead of its time
When Mum got me this book from the library I just fell in love with it. Rebecca's World is arguably my favourite book from childhood. Later she bought me a copy and I read it so much it became well-worn and tattered. I lost that copy but I was extremely lucky to find another.

Looking back at it now, I can see it was ahead of its time with its sterling message of mass deforestation brought about by greed and short-sightedness and the ecological consequences which brought misery for all. Nowadays the book would be extremely topical, so why not bring it back? Even better, why not bring it to television or the movie screen? Okay, it may be a little too weird to translate (The Bad Habits and Tongue-Twister Monster, for example, may not work so well on the screen)but you never know.

There is one error I have noticed: Rebecca has seen "television science-fiction programmes" - so why do the illustrations show her clad in Victorian dress?

5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting and memorable story!
Young Rebecca is illicitly peering through her father' brand new astral telescope when she is suddenly transported to another planet. There, she meets the green fur clad Grisby, who has the most painful feet in the universe; Captain K, an unprepossessing superhero with a homemade red costume; and Kovak, a spy with a thousand disguises, all embarrassingly alike.

Their planet, once covered with a beautiful forest, is now occupied by a glittering glass city.Long ago, when the Glister family learned to make glass, their furnaces were fueled by wood, and the forest was soon destroyed. The planet's inhabitants didn't realize that the scent from the trees repelled GHOSTS, horrible shapeless monsters who kidnap people, torture them, and change them into GHOSTS.

When the GHOSTS invaded the city, the already affluent Glisters seized the opportunity to increase their wealth by cutting down the last few trees and creating wooden GHOST shelters.

During the frequent GHOST attacks, the people are charged a fee to enter the GHOST shelters, then charged double to leave.Except for the GHOST shelters, the only remaining piece of wood is a pointy stick Captain K uses to combat the enemy.

According to an old story, the last living tree sits on an unidentified island in the middle of a lake. Its exact location can only be determined by decoding a map that is currently in the possession of the last member of the Glister family, Mister Glister.

When Rebecca is invited to Mister Glister's palatial home for tea, she plans to steal the map and find the GHOST tree, with or without her three unusual friends. Will her quest succeed, or will Mister Glister's greed finally destroy the inhabitants of the Forbidden Planet?

This exciting and creative quest tale is like a cross between The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: 100th Anniversary Edition (Books of Wonder) and The Lorax (Classic Seuss) with a dash of The Phantom Tollbooth thrown in.It illustrates how greed can lead a world to the brink of extinction, and how ordinary people can accomplish the extraordinary tasks necessary to restore the environment.

Not counting the maps on the front and back endpapers, the book contains forty-four whimsical illustrations by Larry Learmonth (thirty-two black and white, and twelve in color).

It is a shame that this book is out of print.Somebody, please reprint this!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best childhood memory!
I was looking at all the other reviews of this book, hoping to find the answer of where it is! I had a copy when i was young and read it till it fell apart, i don't know where it is now, but i like another reviewer really want my children to read this book, it has everything you ever need as a child growing up. extremely funny, educating about the world we live in, how goodfriendships are so rare in this day and age, that to find a good one you are truely greatful. It leaves you not wanting to put it down as you are in this other world Terry is writing about, to put the book down is like shutting this planet off!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of a kind
Excellent, a childhood classic indeed. It's because of Terry Nation that Peter Pan gave it all up for neverending childhood... the kind of story with warmth and vision that children will remember for a lifetime.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favourite Childrens book
A teacher at school read Rebecca's World to us as a class when i was 9, atthe time the environmental theme wasn't apparent becasue it was beforepeople realised the problem. I recommend this book to everyone, particularly to teachers, because everyone I know who ever read it as achild rates it as amongst their favourite book. I wouldn't say that thisbook changed my life (except for spending far too much time in second handbookshops trying to find a copy) but even when i read it now, it sparks offmy imagination.Any book which makes you want to know the charactersbetter is great in my book, and I'm still sad when the story ends because Iwant to know more about the world, and the characters. I eventually found acopy, and it is one of my most treasured possessions, probably more sobecause the child who owned it before me carefully coloured in the map atthe front, and the pictures at the back. This should be on every childsreading list. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Matrix Comic Vol. 2
The Matrix Comic Vol. 2 was delivered promptly and in mint condition. It's a great read and contains spectacular art.Anyone who is a fan of The Matrix(es) will enjoy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great stories, poor binding!
This would have been a 5 star rating if not for the incredibly poor binding. Only reason all pages are still together is because of carefull handling, I'm afraid it'll selfdestruct the second time through.

The stories like in the Animatrix are extremely varied and usually surprisingly good (despite high expectations!). The styles range from comic to realistic and there's even a fully written story in there.

If you liked the Animatrix, you'll probably love these as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Matrix Comix still hold up after all this time!
After a weekend marathon of Matrix movies, a friend told me about the comics, and so I ordered then not knowing what to expect. Thank Goodness I did! These comics were as promised, and a nice addition to my Matrix collection. Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tell me more of Matrix...

Buy it, it's very good reader.
