Marion's book of poems, "Father"
Jeff Daniel Marion's recent volume of poetry, Father, resonates with vivid imagery, revealing such sensory delights as "Wind sighs in the long, leafy/ arms of willow" and "...only when death is ready/ will your wings unfold/ to lift you free/ beyond this dark weather,/ beyond time." Marion draws on deeply felt observations and shares them with us in compelling words that reveal not only the connections between father and son but also the son's memories of times and places. His words often recreate images in specific timelines, in such titles as "VICTORY GARDENS, 1945" and "78 RPM," and "CHRISTMAS FIREWORKS, 1948." Then, again, sometimes his words tell stories of fatherhood and childhood, of early impressions and later understandings. The poems resonate within their myriad settings--the ink room at the print shop, the bedside vigil, the closet floor; and the language Marion uses is concrete, sharp, and warm. In these settings memory reveals itself as a living part of the present polished through the years like his father's Omega watch and treasured as his father valued the life of a hummingbird: "Then the bird stirred and rose/ to perch on his thumb./ As he slowly raised his hand/ the wings began to hum/ and my father's breath lifted/ and flew out across the world." What did you expect me to say?Lent.
This play is amazing.I'm a theatre major and was introduced to it this semester during an acting class - I had to act out the religious lunch scene between Annie and Elliot.It went well, but I completely fell in love with the play when I read it to know what was going on.

Oddly enough, The Purple Rose (Jeff Daniel's theatre in Chelsea, MI) was showing it these past months.I didn't get to go see it, but I bet it was awesome.

Regarding Amazon though, I was really amazed with their speedy shipping.I was told 5 days. So, when I wasn't expecting it for a couple more days and it showed up, I was really happy.Good job, Amazon!

Hilarious and Human
I purchased the play after seeing it a few years ago. It has moments when your eyes tear up from laughter (a character mentions getting turned on by a documentary on animal mating habits), and also moments when the characters feel entirely vulnerable and human (the woman tells the story of how she discovered her ex cheating on her). There is enough foreshadowing that I had an idea of where the ending was headed, but others in the audience audibly gasped at the final twist.

For those out there interested in reading this play for the possibility of producing it, do it. It's a great show. The scenes and sets are supposed to flow into each other, so it's ideal for a small space. The biggest downfall is that the cast has 1 female role and about 4 male roles (thus perfectly perpetuating the claim that only 20% of roles in theatre are for women). That said, the female role is the main character, and it's a juicy role if you have a great actress for it. Two of the male characters are large roles, and the others are minor characters.

If you are an actor looking to buy this play for potential monologues, I wouldn't. The female character has a couple of great monologues (including a plea for donations to a public broadcasting network in which she claims that Big Bird will die if they don't get enough money), but as with any great monologues, they're horribly overused for auditions. There are a couple of shorter monologues for the men, but they seem tricky to use out of the context of the play.

If you are looking for scenes to use (for classes or for competitions), this one has male/female scenes, and male/male/female scenes, but that's it.

It's one of my favorite plays to read. I recommend picking it up.

Food for the brain: Creative systems poetry
First of all, I hope this gets back into print soon. Also, there are at least two different covers, the one not shown above being a nice illustration.

This is a book that has grown on me over time, and today I'm very glad I kept it around. It's the kind I often return to to read a short section, a single "poem", which leaves me sitting lost in thought for a while.

These are unusual poems that can be seen in their various stages of life, each equally presented as a final piece. Like a computer program or a DJ processing a sample of sound, a text snippet is passed through various filters and processes that re-arrange, sometimes wildly, the content to create various stages of the poems evolution. These are not just the output of some computer randomizer however, the processes are to my mind much more creative and human than could be achieved by software. Some do things like mix up all the words which is fairly easy, but others do things like "Find A Story" from a jumble of words, which obviously involves a lot more decision making and creativity from the author.

Just as in modern music samples, the source material covers a huge range, from serious literature such as Shakespeare, to pedestrain things like "things that happened to Jeff Noon today". The results are always amazing and inspiring, both for the actual content, creativity and beauty in the text, as well as the concepts used for types of manipulation.

This is one of the most creatively inspiring books i own, from someone very interested in poetry, systems processing, modern art, modern music, deconstruction, etc.

The process behind the products
Jeff Noon is a wonderful writer. Shades of Haruki Murakami by way of early Jonathan Lethem (and others), his sharply pointed science fiction-like stories and novels are deliciously active idea demons and concept farmers. In Cobralingus, Noon introduces those familiar with his work -- it is not the best introduction to Noon by any means -- to a game that writers can use to recombine disparate texts, apply a set of rules, and develop outlet texts that read like some of the most imaginative skiffy out there -- even if they're mutations of pre-existing texts.

After explaining the game's process and offering a key to the rules, what Noon terms "filter gates," the writer serves up 10 example stories, starting with the original, or inlet, text -- and stepping through the process until the resulting outlet text arrives. It's a fascinating, albeit occasionally confusing and mind-bending process, but the end results are wonderful. At the end, Noon divulges his source texts, which range from a 1591 madrigal to a BBC shipping forecast transmitted in 1999.

This is a book for readers, but it is also a book for writers. The text -- and the game -- made me want to write. And should I develop writers block, I now have a new game-like process I can use to get back on the horse and ride.

"Cobralingus" was my introduction to Noon's work...the processes he used to remix/process text are a bit "fuzzy" compared to the well documented algorithms used by the Oulipo writers...but his techniques yield some very nice pieces and have enticed me to check out his other work...

review for calc book
this product is good only if your have the book. it is the solutions manual to the original book. the only thing is that it has every other odd number. so not all the odd numbers are in there. and it would be better if it went through steps more carefully instead of just having the answer because sometimes i get lost. but overall it is a great item and it helps when i am stuck.

The book goes into decent detail about how to solve the problems it has, the only problem is that it doesn't have the solutions to all the odd problems.It skips around.

I think that the product is good and when I need help it lays out the solutions in a way that makes them easy to understand.However it is very limited on which problems it chooses and a lot of the times cant help me with some general questions I have.It is a good resource, but I dont know if I would recommend the guide to people.

When I took cal 2, I had to get this. The book does a terrible job of teaching integrals and series. The engineer that was helping me do the homework always pulled out a different calculus book to help teach me.

Geonosis and the outer rim worlds.
Its a good book for any star wars rpger.

A good, but incomplete resource
After a wait of several months, gamers finally have a new SWRPG sourcebook in the form of Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds.If you've read Coruscant and the Core Worlds then you know the pattern that this sourcebook follows as well.While there are some gaps, players and GM's will probably be slightly more interested in this sourcebook than its older sibling, because as we all know, most of the actual action in the Star Wars universe takes place in the Outer Rim!

Let's cover the aesthetics first.As usual, the SWRPG team has given us another attractive book.The image of a Republic gunship blasting its way through the sky is pretty darn cool.Between the covers this book is full-color throughout with a large amount of quality original artwork.There are a handful of photos this time as well.In short, it just feels like a Star Wars sourcebook.

On to the content.The book's main focus is on 29 Outer Rim worlds.Each planet receives an overview which includes vital statistics, a basic description, a short history, a description of its people (if any), and a selection of important locations.Each planet also has a GM-only section that includes a few adventure ideas, new NPCs, and any new races, creatures, or equipment.Note that there are no new feats or prestige classes at all.Minor worlds like Roon and Kintan receive an average of 5 pages of attention, while major worlds like Geonosis and Kamino receive 8-11 pages each.Again, keep in mind that each entry is a generous but broad overview, not an exhaustive description.

Most worlds, like Bespin, Dathomir, and Ossus have appeared in the movies or novels at some point.Some worlds seem to be brand new.However, three notable worlds are missing entirely: Hoth, Naboo, and Tatooine.Sure, Hoth doesn't have a lot going on, but a page or two would have been nice for the sake of completeness.The authors also explain that Naboo and Tatooine were left out because they already have their own sourcebooks.And they do- but they were (in my opinion) mediocre sourcebooks that are now years out of print.I understand the logic, but it's not an omission I care for.On the other hand, the authors state in the foreward that they may produce a second volume on the Outer Rim if there is sufficient interest.I hope they do.

I also found it interesting that the table of contents lists the NPC's, creatures, equipment, and other extras by page number, and not in alphabetical order.That's not a choice that I would have gone with, but everything is still listed by category as well, so locating an entry is still easy enough.

As a player, the main thing I like about this sourcebook is how sharply the worlds contrast with each other.That makes for excellent character background material.As a GM, I really liked the adventure hooks.The authors have taken the hooks a step further by linking some of the worlds together for two-part adventure ideas.That was a nice touch.

There are also 86 new NPCs (each with a personality and background, and most linked to a specific planet), 15 new species, 10 new pieces of equipment, 10 new vehicles, 1 new starship, 28 new creatures, and 1 new droid.The vast array of new NPCs and creatures in particular seem to provide a wealth of options for roleplaying, combat, or just as a spur for new ideas.

And oh yes... there are many maps as well.Compared to previous books, map quality has really improved.The maps are bigger than they have been, and finally, every single one actually has a key!In fact, the map of the Great Temple on Yavin IV takes up a whole page and is perfect for anyone running a Rebellion or New Jedi Order campaign.

Overall, despite a few flaws and ommissions, Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds is a good, solid reference.Players will like it for its wide array of background material, and GMs will also appreciate the ready-made worlds, adventure hooks, NPCs, and creatures.In short, this is fertile soil for any campaign that ventures into the Outer Rim. ... Not quite what I expected
An interesting book but one that I expected to be much better. Jeff Daniels purports to take a new slant on the history of the Jaguar marque by studying its 'product engineering'. Whatever that may be, it is represented in this book by a fairly random mix of technical detail, supply chain background, a bit on marketing pressures and some mention of personalities in the Jaguar hierarchy.

I am an enthusiast of 1960s Jaguars and found the book offered nothing much new on the engineering of the raft of different models made in that era. Indeed, it skips very lightly over some ... for example, the 420 is dismissed as a "stop gap" with no mention of the modern engineering features that separated it from the original S Type and pointed the way to the XJ6. Background on post XJ6 models was, however, new to me and seemed a much more worthwhile read. Nevertheless, the author's four days spent in the Jaguar archives do not seem to have been quite enough to make this book the rich resource it could have been. ... Read more
