A Good, if Dated, Introduction to Finno-Ugrian Languages
This book was first published in 1975, and traces the development of Finno-Ugrian languages and their speakers (Hungarians, Finns, Estonians, Khanty, Mansi, Udmurts, Mari, Mordvinians, Lapps, etc.). This is mainly by means of linguistic paleontology, i.e. reconstructing material culture and societal structure by means of examining which words have cognates in the languages being considered. If a word can be reconstructed for "fishing net", for instance, historical linguists infer that fishing was part of the economy of the speakers of those languages in which the cognate is attested.

Also, plant and animal names can be used to limit the search for the geographic area in which the peoples lived. For instance, both "bee" and "hedgehog" can be reconstructed, so the homeland must include those regions in which these creatures have (had) their habitat. Additionally, there are early loans from proto-Indo-European speakers ("pig", "hundred"), so early Finno-Ugrians are considered to have lived adjacent to early Indo-Europeans.

Professor Hajdu has an excellent introductory chapter explaining the assumptions and methods of this kind of reconstruction, and then proceeds through the breakup of the various branches and groups of the Finno-Ugrians, with numerous examples. He also explains in layman's terms the structure and characteristics of Finno-Ugrian languages. I found all of this to be quite fascinating, since although I am only familiar with Indo-European languages, I am very interested in knowing something of the Finno-Ugrians and their languages.

In later chapters, Prof. Hajdu tells something of the later history and culture of the various Finno-Ugrian peoples. The only two drawbacks to this book, in my opinion, are: 1) the later history of the Finno-Ugrians is somewhat colored by Soviet propaganda, as it is well-known that the authorities in the Soviet Union engaged in a systematic Russification of these peoples while simultaneously proclaiming the phony ideal of national self-determination and cultural fulfillment, and no listing of the numbers of radio stations broadcasting, or theater groups performing, in some language will convince me otherwise, and 2) since the book came out in 1975, there is no information about how the Finno-Ugrians are faring today (this, of course, is only due to the fact that the book is somewhat dated).

That being said, this is a very interesting and worthwhile book for anyone interested in Finno-Ugrian languages and peoples.

A clear and simple layman's introduction, though not much on recent events
Peter Hajdu's FINNO-UGRIAN LANGUAGES AND PEOPLES was originally published in Hungarian in 1963, and was expanded and translated into English by G. F. Cushing in 1974. The book is an introduction for laymen to the ethnic, linguistic, and cultural richness of these related peoples of Europe and western Asia. As it was originally written for a popular Hungarian audience, the Hungarian language is used as a basis for many of the linguistic comparisons.

The first part of the book is concerned with the languages in themselves. It begins with an introduction to the comparative method, the linguistic technique of determining the relationship between languages by searching for regular sound correspondences. It was through this process that the affinity of the Finno-Ugrian languages was discovered, and in a sense the entire field depends on it. Once Hajdu shows how this relationship is established, he discusses the questions that arise from it, such as the original homeland of the speakers of the proto-language, the relationships to other language families (mainly loan words from Indo-European), and the stages by which the language family broke up and its speakers dispersed.

The second part of the work treats individually each of the peoples speaking Finno-Ugrian languages: Mari, Mordvins, Finns, Hungarians, Udmurts, and so forth. This is a very basic history and ethnographic sketch, discussing such things as traditional wedding ceremonies, costume, music and poetry, etc. Unfortunately, the book does not have much information about the development of literary culture among the peoples in Russia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the many tragedies that befell their writers during the time of Stalin. For a better view of 20th century events in these regions, see Rein Taagepera's THE FINNO-UGRIC REPUBLICS AND THE RUSSIAN STATE (Routledge, 1999), although its linguistic details are suspect. ...
