Excerpt: Simon Corcoran is an ancient historian and senior research fellow at University College, London. He received his D.Phil from St. John's College, Oxford in 1992. He was awarded the Henryk Kupiszewski Prize for his book The Empire of the Tetrarchs in 1998. He is working on Projet Volterra, an extensive on-line public database of law (Roman, Germanic or barbarian, and ecclesiastical) for the period AD193-900. Corcoran is a Consulting Editor for the Journal of Late Antiquity and has served on the Council of the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies. Greed is a motive everyone can understand. Lactantius includes greed and avarice as a notable part of the tetrarchic maladministration practised by Diocletian, Maximian, Galerius, and Maximinus, and indeed the cause of the inflation the edict seeks to curb. Thus it is Diocletian's greed that gives rise to the Prices Edict itself. Simon Corcoran , Empire of the Tetrarchs In 2010 the Volterra database was used by Corcoran and Salway to identify previously unknown fragments of the Gregorian Code. The "Fragmenta Londiniensia" are seventeen pieces of parchment estimated to date from AD400, the document having been cut up and re-used as book-binding material. This is the first original evidence yet discovered of the Gregorian Codex. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=15001774 ... Read more

Excerpt: Alfred Edward Housman (pronounced ; 26 March 1859 30 April 1936), usually known as A. E. Housman, was an English classical scholar and poet, best known for his cycle of poems A Shropshire Lad. Lyrical and almost epigrammatic in form, the poems were mostly written before 1900. Their wistful evocation of doomed youth in the English countryside, in spare language and distinctive imagery, appealed strongly to late Victorian and Edwardian taste, and to many early twentieth century English composers (beginning with Arthur Somervell) both before and after the First World War. Through its song-setting the poetry became closely associated with that era, and with Shropshire itself. Housman was counted one of the foremost classicists of his age, and has been ranked as one of the greatest scholars of all time. He established his reputation publishing as a private scholar and, on the strength and quality of his work, was appointed Professor of Latin at University College London and later, at Cambridge. His editions of Juvenal, Manilius and Lucan are still considered authoritative. Housman was born in Fockbury, a hamlet on the outskirts of Bromsgrove in Worcestershire, the eldest of seven children of a country solicitor. His mother died on his twelfth birthday, and subsequently her place was taken by his stepmother Lucy, an elder cousin of his father's whom he later married in 1873. His brother Laurence Housman and sister Clemence Housman also became writers. Housman was educated first at King Edward's School, Birmingham, then Bromsgrove S...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3198 ... Read more

Excerpt: Michael Crawford OBE (born 19 January 1942) is an English actor and singer. He has garnered great critical acclaim and won numerous awards during his career, which covers radio, television, film, and stagework on both London's West End and on Broadway in New York City. With a career that spans over four decades, he is known both in and out of Britain for originating the title role in The Phantom of the Opera, as well as playing the hapless Frank Spencer in the popular 1970s British sitcom, Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, which successfully earned him a place as a household name and made him famous to millions around the world. Michael Crawford was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England as Michael Patrick Dumbell Smith. He was raised by his mother, Doris, and her parents, Montague and Edith Kathleen (née O'Keefe) Pike. His mother's first husband, who was not his biological father, Arthur Dumbell Smith, was killed during the Battle of Britain, less than a year after they married. Sixteen months after his death, Crawford was born, the result of a short-lived relationship, and given his mother's first husband's surname. During his early years, he divided his time between the army camp in Wiltshire, where he and his mother were living during the war, and the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, where he also lived with his mother and grandparents. However, at the end of the war in 1945, his mother was re-married to a grocer named Den Ingram in 1945 and they moved to London. There Crawford attended Oakfield Preparatory School, Dulwich, where he was known as Michael Ingram. He made his first stage appearance in the role of Sammy the Little Sweep in his school production of Benjamin Britten's Let's...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=163368 ... Read more

Product Description
The 4th edition of CHMT continues the trend, initiated with the 3rd ed., of encouraging the use of a numerically based, computational approach to solving convective heat and mass transfer problems. The book also continues its tradition of also providing classic problem solving approaches to this subject. This textbook presents a strong theoretical basis for convective heat and mass transfer by focusing on boundary layer theory.

This new edition provides optional coverage of the software teaching tool TEXSTAN.This boundary layer computer program can be used to enhance the understanding of the relationship between the surface friction, heat, and mass transfer and their respective flow fields.TEXSTAN contains the data structure needed to describe and solve most convective problems encountered by senior and graduate level students.

Other significant changes include: expanded chapter on convective heat transfer with body forces; reduced focus on heat exchanger theory; completely rewritten chapters on mass transfer to include more engineering examples for both low and high transfer rates, to provide the student with more insight to a seemingly difficult subject.

The 4/e will also have a Book Website with password-protected solutions to all chapter problems, web links to industry, and additional information on TEXSTAN. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better grad fluids books out there
I teach a graduate course out of this book.Another reviewer has noted that most instructors are unhappy with most books.I think this one is concise and well written. It has significantly enhanced my understanding of the topic. The TEXSTAN code, while obtuse, is a useful tool for understanding boundary layers without requiring too much of a learning curve. It's use is significantly simpler than CFD or experiments. My students have generally been able to pick it up within a week with a bit of effort.I'm not sure why anyone who wasn't able to put in that sort of effort is bothering with graduate fluids.

1-0 out of 5 stars Who needs standard nomenclature when you can write your own book?
So enthalpy is now i instead of h, Cp is c...why?who knows.

I cannot understand why professors continue to use books when they preface their class each year with a disclaimer on how the book isn't very good.

Book is coupled with TEXSTAN, Crawford's heat transfer code. Some problems in each chapter use the code, but it is poorly documented and requires a lot of browsing his website in order to find all the right options. Also, some versions of the book claim to come with the software enclosed but none do -- it must be downloaded from his website and you have to get access from him.

Finally, book is also rather small for the price.I'm pretty sure it's the most price/cu.in. or price/page of any textbook I own. ... Read more

Product Description

This comprehensive, well-illustrated history of the Bahrain Islands fills a major gap in our knowledge of the archaeology of the Middle East. Home to the ancient civilizations of Dilmun and Tylos, Bahrain was one of the most significant cultural areas in the region and its pre-eminence as a trading center brought it enormous wealth, reflected in the buildings and artifacts that have been excavated in recent years. Many of these objects and sites have never been published before and Traces of Paradise reveals an extraordinary range of materials.

4-0 out of 5 stars Traces of Paradise
The book was expensive but I would suggest anyone going to Bahrain purchase it.The book provides information about the history of the country and details about the exhibits in their National Museum.I didn't have it while I was there and and wish I did-I've had many "Wow, I would have liked to have known (or seen) that" moments since I got back.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource on the ancient Persian Gulf
Some ancient Sumerian writings speak of the island of Dilmun, a paradise created specially by the gods as a holy garden. And other Sumerian writings speak of the merchants of Dilmun, who transport rare and precious commodities from far off lands. This fascinating book was written to accompany an Institute of Archaeology exhibition of artifacts from Dilmun/Bahrain.

The book divides Bahrain's history into four eras - The Dilmun Culture (2500-1800 BC), the Middle of the Second Millennium BC, the Iron Age (1000-500 BC), and the Tylos Culture (300 BC - 600 AD). Information is presented on a number of different topics, and along the way the reader is treated to many different colorful pictures of various artifacts, along with their very informative captions.

As a student of the ancient Persian Gulf region, I must say that I found this book to be an excellent resource. If you are interested in the ancient Persian Gulf, then I really do think that you should read this fascinating book. ... Read more

Product Description
If a scholar wishes to create a picture of a modern society in all its aspects, there is little of what he needs to know that he cannot know, although there may still be much that he cannot understand. For the history of Greece and Rome, there is a great deal which is simply unknowable. From the end of the archaic age of Greece, there is an unbroken sequence of works by Greek and, later, Roman historians down to the end of antiquity. But their vision and range of interest were often limited and much of what they did produce has been lost. Some help may be derived from the documentary material produced in antiquity, material which was the product of officials organising public activities, or heads of families organising their affairs, or individuals leaving their mark on the world. Beyond this, the evidence of archaeology and numismatics may also be helpful. The four essays in this book set out to characterise the nature of the ancient literary tradition, the inscriptional material, the archaeological and numismatic evidence and to explain how and for what purposes they may be used. ...
