5-0 out of 5 stars Great Rome guide
This is an excellent guide, with entries by a variety of Romaphiles who know the city. The scope of their "secrets" is very helpful. The reader will find some true treasures.

2-0 out of 5 stars Contains no secrets
The title is misleading. This book contains no secrets, but merely erudite opinions about very commonly visited sights and attractions. The book is tiny and lovely at first glance-- it might make a pretty gift, but it is in fact hard to read because the type is light and tiny, the paper translucent.

It is not really a guide book, but more of an introduction to the possibilities of Rome. You could maybe use it to whet your appetite before you leave, but even as small as it is, leave it at home and bring a better, more complete guidebook in its place.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best possible 2nd guidebook
City Secrets makes no claim to be a comprehensive guide to Rome.Buy another book to get the overview and to see the major sites (I liked Rick Steves' approach), but then also bring City Secrets to really begin to get to know the city. The suggestions are personal, quirky, and always interesting.

4-0 out of 5 stars rome-ah... wish I had more time
this is not a travel journal as much as a history book.I will keep in my library because I love rome and will return again. Read this in advance of your trip and get a moons book for carrying with you. this is great advanced reading with great off the beaten path stuff but read ahead of time and take a more generic book with you and some notes rather than carrying this as extra weight. Also if you thinking about rome (why think...do it) read this to get excited about how rich in history and architecture this great city is then book your tickets and go.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to read and of limited use
I don't recommend this book for the average person. The type is teeny tiny and in pale greyscale against a vellum background; very artsy but impossible to read. The content is comprised of personal opinions by academics and artists. ... Read more

WITH A NEW INTRODUCTION BY ROBERT D. KAPLAN
COMMENTARY BY VIRGINIA WOOLF, HAROLD BLOOM, EDWARD SAID,
F. R. LEAVIS, AND ROBERT PENN WARREN

"        Never were Mr. Conrad's felicity of phrase and charm of atmosphere more obvious. . . . A book of the rare literary quality of Lord Jim is something to receive with gratitude and joy."--The New York Times

Originally published in 1900, Lord Jim is one of Joseph Conrad's most complex literary masterpieces. The story of a young sailor whose moment of cowardice haunts him for the rest of his life, Lord Jim explores Conrad's lifelong obsessions with the nature of guilt and the possibility of redemption.
Nostromo is considered by many to be Conrad's supreme achievement, and Conrad himself referred to Nostromo as his "widest canvas." Set in the fictitious South American republic of Costaguana, Nostromo reveals the effects that misguided idealism, unparalleled greed, and imperialist interests can have on a fledging nation. V. S. Pritchett wrote: "Nostromo is the most strikingly modern of Conrad's novels. It is pervaded by a profound, even morbid sense of insecurity which is the very spirit of our age."
Robert D. Kaplan's Introduction explains why the two novels together form Conrad's darkest glimpse into the flawed nature of humankind.

JOSEPH CONRAD (1857-1924) grew up amid political unrest in Russian-occupied Poland. After twenty years at sea in the French and British merchant navies, he settled in England in 1894. Over the next three decades, he revolutionized the English novel with works such as Youth (1902), Heart of Darkness (1902), Typhoon (1903), The Secret Agent (1907), Under Western Eyes (1911), Chance (1913), and Victory (1915).

ROBERT D. KAPLAN is a correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly and the author of seven books of travel and foreign affairs that have been translated into a dozen languages, including Balkan Ghosts, The Ends of the Earth, and An Empire Wilderness, all bestsellers, and a collection of essays, The Coming Anarchy. He lectures frequently to the U.S. military. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good choice, tough price
This is an excellent selection, Conrad's best novel, NOSTROMO, and his most popular, LORD JIM, which is also an excellent novel it its own right.

Price is the big sticking point, since you can get both novels and lots more by Conrad for about an eighth the price. Modern Library does a fine job on this ebook, as on most of its others, and the introduction is very good. If you want an unusually readable and well proofread Kindle download go for this.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!
This is a truly excellent edition (and compilation). It may seem like a small point, but I really love the typeset used. And the prefatory material, especially that of Robert Kaplan, is particularly good. The selection of Lord Jim and Nostromo was also well done, for it juxtaposes two of Conrad's best and, perhaps, most representative works. On the one hand, there's Lord Jim, largely psychological and personal, in which the title character struggles with, and constantly returns to, a trying moment in which he acted questionably. On the other, while no less psychological, there's Nostromo, which enters the realm of politics, revolution, and ideology--a more mature Conrad and certainly much more complex, stylistically and thematically. The works themselves, of course, deserve five stars, but so, too, does this stunning Modern Library edition. ... Product Description

Thousands of entrepreneurs and small businesses suffer from not understanding their customers. They don't what they are doing right that causes customers to come to them. And, importantly, they don't know why customers choose to shop a competitor instead. Essentially, they lack a clear understanding of the needs of their customers and prospects which, if exploited, would assuredly grow their business. Often ego or downright stubbornness prevents entrepreneurs or small-business executives from using market research. They think they know the needs of their customers better than the customers themselves. Frequently, they feel that marketing research is too expensive, complex or just won't provide new answers. Guerrilla Marketing Research extends the well-known Guerrilla Marketing franchise to explain how to use marketing research as a tool for more effectively developing marketing, sales promotion or new product. It illustrates how big companies use market research to make money and how small companies can do the same at a fraction of the cost. It destroys the myth that only big companies can afford marketing research and makes clear to small and mid-size companies and entrepreneurs, and even larger businesses without an in-house research function, how marketing research can add to their bottom line.

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't live up to the title
I'm hard pressed to understand why this is titled "Guerrilla" anything. It is a review of conventional market research techniques, primarily of concern to consumer marketers, large companies and academics (you'll notice that half the reviews here are from academia.)

Having done marketing consulting for small to medium size businesses for 20+ years - I can state that most of this book would be over their heads. Additionally - it's not market research they need per se, but rather a better understanding of their current customers and how to increase the number of top-spending customers. The customer research techniques I used for those clients are very simple and straightforward (nowhere near as complicated as those in this book), and allowed their marketing to focus on attainable, practical results.

I had studied all this stuff in grad school, but quickly realized when I stated consulting that it's for the F500 crowd and the academics - business owners need information that is actionable and will get results - quickly.

The author is also hung up on certain stereotypes - for example, he says it's hard to do a telephone survey for more than 20 minutes. For one of my larger clients (an industry consulting firm)- I've interviewed between 200-300 senior executives over the last six years, and even though I tell them at the onset that it's only 20 minutes, in almost all cases I can't get of the phone in less than 45 minutes or an hour. And these are C-level executives. All depends on the subject, positioning, appeal and the skill of the questioner. In almost all cases I'm designing the research from scratch, not just reading someone else's questionnaire.

Small companies and business owners would be better off just collecting as much data as they can on their current customers, segmenting those customers according to buyer characteristics (perhaps get some help there) and determine ways to best reach them with marketing messaging and both build and expand the customer base.

If you are a small business, this book really isn't going to get you there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Marketing Research Techniques
We use this book at UCSD for our Practical Research Marketing Class.

This book is a great textbook for our class but also for people who want to know more about marketing research.

In 18 chapters and 223 pages the author explains his models and insight how to help any business and make more money.

If even UCSD uses this book than it is a must have for every marketing student or marketing professional.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
Very good book for a basic understanding of how market research works.
There is very little about statistical measures used to analyze research data, so if you're into that then I would reccomend going with a more econometrics/mathematics oriented book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money
This book hardly covers marketing research at all, but it does talk a lot about how market researchers are not taken seriously enough in big companies. Far from talking about "guerilla tactics",i.e. outsmarting but not outspending your competition, it sets research budgets at 0,5 to 5% of your "$50 million marketing budget, anywhere from $250,000 to $2,500,000". Not what I would expect for "guerilla tactics" for small companies. But I have to admit that I have only read the first half and then gave up....

5-0 out of 5 stars I Use this as a Text When I Teach
I teach at a major university and use this text for my students to have for background material, along with my book Pain Killer Marketing. This book provides useful insights into practical market research methodologies and their problems. The examples are up-to-date, unlike many of the standard market research textbooks. It is easy to read and well-written. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

Product Description

This is the adventure story of the year -- how Conrad Anker found the body of George Mallory on Mount Everest, casting an entirely new light on the mystery of the explorer who may have conquered Everest seventy-five years ago.

On June 8, 1924, George Leigh Mallory and Andrew "Sandy" Irvine were last seen climbing toward the summit of Mount Everest. Clouds soon closed around them, and they vanished into history. Ever since, mountaineers have wondered whether they reached the summit twenty-nine years before Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.

On May 1, 1999, Conrad Anker, one of the world's strongest mountaineers, discovered Mallory's body lying facedown, frozen into the scree and naturally mummified at 27,000 feet on Everest's north face. The condition of the body, as well as the artifacts found with Mallory, including goggles, an altimeter, and a carefully wrapped bundle of personal letters, are important clues in determining his fate. Seventeen days later, Anker free-climbed the Second Step, a 90-foot sheer cliff that is the single hardest obstacle on the north ridge. The first expedition known to have conquered the Second Step, a Chinese team in 1975, had tied a ladder to the cliff, leaving unanswered the question of whether Mallory could have climbed it in 1924. Anker's climb was the first test since Mallory's of the cliff's true difficulty. In treacherous conditions, Anker led teammate Dave Hahn from the Second Step to the summit.

Reflecting on the climb, Anker explains why he thinks Mallory and Irvine failed to make the summit, but at the same time, he expresses his awe at Mallory's achievement with the primitive equipment of the time. Stunningly handsome and charismatic, Mallory charmed everyone who met him during his lifetime and continues to fascinate mountaineers today. He was an able writer, a favorite of the Bloomsbury circle, and a climber of legendary gracefulness. The Lost Explorer is the remarkable story of this extraordinarily talented man and of the equally talented modern climber who spearheaded a discovery that may ultimately help solve the mystery of Mallory's disappearance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lost Explorer: Finding Mallory on Mt. Everest
I am a math and science teacher at a high school.I found that the book was very informative, and opened my eyes to the many problems that mountain climbers have.We live in the mountains, and a formidable solid granite rock called "Devil's Slide" is near us.

George Mallory made many mistakes in/on his fourth attempt to climb Everest. And, from the description of his attempts to summit the mountain may not have been able to do so.

Thanks for the book, Jeff Campbell

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
George Leigh Mallory was probably the greatest mountaineer ever to scale a mountain. This book does him justice. Though we'll never know if Mallory and Irvine actually made it to the top of Everest, the circumstantial evidence I think points to the probability that they did in fact do that. When Conrad Anker and his team discovered Mallory's remains, they discovered that Mallory's goggles were secure in his back pack. This means that Mallory was mountaineering after the sun had set. One of Mallory's teammates reported that he had seen Mallory and Irvine on the second step, less than 500 feet from the peak, in the early afternoon when the sun was bright. Thus, it seems very probable that Mallory and Irvine made it to the top and, during their descent, tookoff their goggles because of the increasing darkness. If anyone could have made it to the top using the inferior equipment avaiable in the early 1920s, it was Mallory. Given the fact that he was within 500 feet of the top of Everest in the early afternoon makes it more than likely that Mallory and Irvine were the first to conquer Everest.

5-0 out of 5 stars As Close to the Real Truth as One Could Imagine
This story is told in a dual format style; Anker uses the 1st person and Roberts the third, recounting the history of the 1924 British expedition, and the loss of Mallory and Irvine. The backgrounds of both these hardy early climbers is investigated in great detail, including several earlier scouting expeditions.
The book was a fabulous read and I finished it in two sittings. I was interested in the subject, having seen the BBC/NOVA TV production and heard the comments of other climbers on the discovery of the lost Mallory.
I was impressed on the multi-points-of-view taken by both co-authors, and the discussions of what the range of possibilities were for the results that were discovered. At the same time, there are many interesting yarns recounted by both writers, themselves very strong and sensitive adventurers.
If you are going to read only one book on the subject, let it be this one!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and fascinating
This is an interesting, concise account of the 1999 discovery of George Mallory, possibly the first to climb Mt. Everest.

In 1924 Everest veteran Mallory and his promising junior partner Andrew Irvine famously disappeared some 1000 feet below the summit.Did they reach it before they perished, 29 years before Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay? In 1999, Conrad Anker of the Mallory and Irvine Research Expedition found Mallory. Yet the great question remains.

In this book Anker and fellow climber David Roberts discuss Mallory's life, the discovery, what Mallory and Irvine mean to them. Anker recounts his attempt to replicate a key part of Mallory's climb. Roberts' biography of Mallory alternates with Anker's account of the events of 1999.

After finding Mallory, Anker's team removed key items he was carrying, which were both clues and historic artifacts. They also published photographs of part of the body. Some called this desecration. Anker responds.

Interestingly, Anker and his collegues all initially thought they had found Irvine.

Mallory's camera was absent, much to everyone's disappointment.A few days later, Anker and his partners assisted in a rescue.Afterwards, fresh snow obscured the search region, scrapping a planned search for Irvine and the camera.

Roberts discusses Mallory's somewhat bohemian youth, his attitudes about bottled oxygen, his prior climbing achievements, and his famous quote: "Because it's there".A full chapter is devoted to the 1924 expedition, discussing why Mallory chose to climb with Irvine, Teddy Norton and David Somervell's record climb just before Mallory's attempt, and Noel Odell's tantalizing last sight of the lost pair.

The book concludes with Anker's account of his own summit climb, his near-disastrous descent, and his best speculation about George Mallory and Andrew Irvine's fate. His reluctant conclusion: the key obstacle called the Second Step was most likely unclimbable under 1924 conditions, the two turned back there if not earlier, and they fell to their deaths descending as fresh snow fell.

This fascinating book is dedicated to Mallory and Irvine, who both authors greatly admire regardless of the exact events of June 8, 1924.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even better to HEAR Anker tell it...
They found George Mallory's body on Everest.I had the pleasure of hearing this story- before I read the book- from Conrad Anker himself at a Wilderness Medical Conference this past year. What an amazing story. Some have been critical of the handling of the remains and possessions but there is no doubt in my mind after meeting the man that the intention was to 'do the right thing'. It's just that the right thing isn't so clear in this situation. What do you do when you find the remains of a legend in an environment as inhospitable as Mt. Everest? The profits or a portion thereof of book sales at the conference were donated to charity-the Alex Lowe foundation and the possessions recovered, as I recall, were turned over to family members or historical societies- it's not like Anker is selling them on Ebay. Also, maybe there is some pride or ego in the discovery but rightfully so. I think it would be hard to accurately describe the events without sounding a little boastful, although again, Mr. Anker seems like quite an unassuming man and I didn't get that impression in person. The book is interesting and a quick easy read to gain historical perspective about George Mallory, Sandy Irvine and company and the early exploration of Everest and about the discovery of Mallory's body which is monumental in mountaineering circles. In fact, I think I'm going to go read it again.
