David Wilkie was born in Sri Lanka, the offspring of Scottish parents who were stationed in that country. He was a pupil of Daniel Stewart's College in Edinburgh, and while a student there he joined the Warrender Baths Club, one of Scotland's most prestigious swimming and water polo clubs. It was there that he began to develop his specialist stroke, the breaststroke. Wilkie first came to the public's attention when he won bronze in front of his home crowd in the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in the 200 metre breaststroke. He wore a swim cap for that event during the commonwealth games, making him the first elite swimmer to wear one in a major competition. Wilkie's world breakthrough came as a surprise to many when he won silver in the 200 m breaststroke at the Munich Olympics in 1972. Unique Must Read for Depth of Heart and Conscience
From the heart with brilliant writing. I don't like violent books but its about so much more than that. The author shared far more with me than her personal story or of ugliness in the world. She bared her life to expose a strong spirit that shone through - and helped to inspire me to do the same despite the unforeseen challenges in life. Insight and intelligence with beauty.

Extremely Engaging
Rarely does a book hold my interest like this book did. I could not put it down.

Author's Search for Resolution
Terri Jentz took a harrowing piece of her past and opened it up for public consumption in this memoir of her close brush with death at the hands of a man with an axe.She recounts this terrible event in her young adult life with gripping details that make readers feel as if they too were witnesses.Beyond that, however, Jentz lets the readers share the journey that she went on to find resolution to her drama by trying to discover the perpetrator in this never solved crime.Traveling back to the Eastern Oregon high desert which was the desolate backdrop to her experience, Jentz finds that many people in the area have "known" for years which local boy almost killed her.She then sets out to find him, traveling to places such as the Tri-Cities in Eastern Washington and other Northwest towns.Her writing is powerful and leaves the reader wondering why law enforcement was never able to bring justice to this case.I do have to say that I was disappointed by the new cover for this version of the book.The older one was much more atmospheric and showed the landscape of Eastern Oregon.However, I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys memoirs, true crime, the Northwest, or who can relate to trying to overcome tragedy in one's life.

Splendidly crafted... a haunting memoir
You will either love or hate this book.If you are looking for the typical true crime narrative or like books without lots of description, go no further.However, if you are like me and submerge yourself in a good book (food stains, water stains on your paperbacks)... if you love the details and appreciate well written prose, you will fall in love with Terri Jentz.I simply could not put this book down.Sometimes it took me five or ten minutes to read one page because I would almost go into a trance putting myself in her shoes.Maybe it helps that I am also a survivor of violent crime and I could relate to some of the more bizzare things she did in her post-traumatic years, such as her need to keep her blood stained sleeping bag, a touchstone to the wounded self that remained in that camp ground until she confronted it 15 years later.I so would do the things she did, like lie down on the ground that had soaked up her blood. These things are part of the healing process, probably why I am still drawn (28 years later) to drive by the scene of my abduction whenever I visit o the city where it happened. In one of Terri's interviews, she said that rather than "get over it" what we need is to bring it closer, make it part of our story, and I agree. I also could relate to need of finding the perpetrator and bringing some kind of justice to her ordeal.I cried with her over the loss of her friendship with the one person who could have perfectly shared her journey back to wholeness, her room mate and friend who experienced the trauma with her.She is a brave woman with remarkable insight and a beautiful writing style (reminded me of Daniel Mendelsohn's style in The Lost, another book I loved.) You cannot experience this book without being moved... it made me want to meet her and say, "Well done!"

Truth and Resolution are Prerequisites for Healing from Trauma
About twenty years ago, Terri Jentz and a college friend from Yale decided to take a bicycle trip across the country.What started out as idyllic ended up in horrific tragedy.While camping in Oregon, Terri and her friend were viciously attacked and almost died.Up to the time of the Ms. Jentz's writing this book, no one had been apprehended for this crime.

Peter Straub strikes again with The Hell Fire Club
I only recently read The Hellfire Club, and as usual, Straub's style did not disappoint me. His written is articulate, and he creates very interesting characters, indeed. However, one must be careful to stay on top of all the different elements that constantly shift and change, as Straub handles this with ease and perfection.
He is a master of mystery; The Hellfire Club will keep you thinking, wondering right up to the end. And along the way, you will walk with some very intersting characters, especilly the illustrious Dick Dart. He will carry you into some very odd situations.
Moreover, if you are a fan of Peter Straub, you will not be disappointed. If you are not, you soon will be. If circumstance allows, pick up a copy. And read on...

I really loved the book that i bought from this seller. The book was in perfect condition and the seller mailed it in no time. Thank You!

Good technique, but lacking everything else.
I can tell from this book that the author is talented at weaving a tale, but this book was just terrible. Good technique cannot save this story.

None of the characters in the book are well-developed. The author did not create any attachment to the main character, which is a fatal blunder.

Most of The Hellfire Club is filler. There is too much detail, and too many parts that could have been left out without affecting the plot. The only salvageable parts of this book are the parts with the villain. This novel is 463 pages long, yet it easily could have been around 200 pages.

After reading The Hellfire Club, I was left scratching my head. It is not scary nor suspenseful. The book is simply boring. I had much difficulty finishing this book, and I admit I had to speed-read through at least 150 pages.

I'm very glad I did not purchase this book, and I recommend that you do not waste your time with it.

Dick Dart, the villain, is wickedly twisted.
It's a little slow in the beginning & didn't reach out & grab me until I read maybe 100 pages, however once it got going, I couldn't put it down. The the mystery is intriguing, the action is suspenseful & the humor is dark. It's filled w/ interesting subplots that are all woven together nicely.

The characters are nicely developed.Maybe the villain, is a bit "over the top," but what a villain!

My main complaint is or should say what disappointed me was...the title.All while reading I was just waiting for the club (The Hellfire Club) to fit in. However, The Hellfire Club really didn't seem to have much to do with anything.Oh well, still an enjoyable read.

Just a note...Some people might not care for the graphic descriptions.

I like a nice knife
For me, Peter Straub's most interesting phase was the Blue Rose short stories and novels (including "The Buffalo Hunter") which culminated in The Hellfire Club. Don't get me wrong, The Hellfire Club doesn't belong to the Blue Rose series, but coming after it, is able to utilise its dense and imagistic style. The Hellfire Club is the best type of experimentation - it's a great story which also creates a series of stories-within-stories in an absolutely authentic way. So Straub is able to ventriloqise a Djuna Barnes-style poetry in "Unwritten Words", mimics a frustrated housewife's gargantuan roman a clef written partly on hotel stationary and bar coasters from around the world, and most pivotally creates a pastiche of Lord of the Rings in a "talking trees" fantasy trilogy which inspires insane cult devotion and a whirlpool of litigation and pre-Internet Internet-style exegesis. It's also the best serial killer novel that doesn't feature Hannibal Lecter. The more I try to explain this book, the more convoluted I seem to make it. But it's hilariously funny, deadly serious, deeply emotional, scathingly satirical, is a fantastic mystery with an endangered and endearing female amateur sleuth (think Rosemary's Baby - piecing together a tapestry of clues while in extreme danger), and has some beautiful and lyrical descriptive writing that makes scenes spring to life. While Hellfire Club sets up its main characters in the first hundred pages, and we grow to know and like Nora Chancel, the book goes completely ballistic when Nora is kidnapped by Dick Dart, a DIY surgeon (he's not a serial killer - that's libellous talk!) with some refreshing and not altogether wholesome social philosophies.
