Best App for Sharing Your Adventures
by Josh Clark

Whrrl v2.0
Free; Version: 2.0.0; Pelago

Turn your outing—or anything you do—into a slideshow to share with others. Whrrl bundles photos and text messages into “stories.” Friends can add to the tale from their phones, too. Anything’s fair game: Your kid’s birthday, a paintball match, a night out, a conference, whatever. Take photos, post messages, and when you’re done, sign into whrrl.com to edit your story into a slideshow to share on the Web, on Facebook, or on Twitter.

Storytellers: Whrrl’s main screen shows a rundown of “featured stories”: a mix of slideshows posted by you and your friends, along with publicly shared slideshows selected for greatness by the Whrrl staff. Tap a story to see the slideshow, or start your own by tapping “Say where you are.” Announcing your location creates a new story where you post photos and messages.

Location, location, location: Stories are pegged to places. If other Whrrl-toting friends are in the same place, they can join the story and add their own photos and messages. You control who can see the story as it’s happening, changing the privacy settings anytime. You might share the story with more people, for example, after you get home and edit it into shape. The story ends when everyone leaves the location.

Feed me: Stories have two layouts, “feed view” and “story view.” Feed view shows the blow-by-blow events that construct the story, listing the messages, photos, arrivals, departures, and comments that float through the location as the story happens. In either view, visitors can add a comment by tapping the speech-bubble icon next to messages and photos. Tap a profile photo to see more about a person, including their stories.

Story view: This is the slideshow of the event. Photos and messages are each individual slides; the effect is like a silent movie where images and dialogue weave together. The front “card” shows who was there as well as visitor comments. When you’re done making the story, the slideshow remains on the Web, and you can edit it, share it, keep it private, or toss it out. (You have to sign into whrrl.com to edit or delete your stories).

Share with anyone:Friends, family, and coworkers don’t have to use Whrrl in order to see your adventures. Post stories on Facebook or Twitter while they’re in progress. (After a story is finished, you can still share it, but you have to do it from the website.) You can also have Whrrl create a photo album on Facebook for every story you create, copying your story photos automatically to your Facebook account. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I really like this book
This was fun experience to explore the different apps in this book. I felt that the apps recommended were of high quality. A fun and easy read for iPhone lovers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Humorously Helping You Navigate Through an Ever-Growing Maze of iPhone Apps
There is irony that a printed book is one of the better ways to explore the possibility of the iPhone, but Josh Clark's eminently readable tome is a terrific resource on what he considers the best programs to download across a variety of categories. Apps are popping up at such a prolific rate that the selections can become overwhelming when rifling through the Apps Store. That's what makes this book so valuable since the author breaks down his choices over seven broad if not mutually exclusive lifestyle topics - At Work, On the Town, At Leisure, At Play, At Home, On the Road, and For Your Health. Graphically, it's pleasing as well with each topic color-coded and vibrant screen captures provided to give the reader an idea of the capabilities associated with each program. Clearly, Clark cannot keep up with the number of apps popping up, but he has done as thorough job as possible given the over 50,000 programs available currently through the Apps Store.

He is concise in his summaries and still shows off a sharp sense of humor, for example, "Park n' Find" ($1.99) helps you find your car in a vast lot, and "SitOrSquat" (Free) pinpoints the closest public restroom, which includes a blog of toilet humor for extensive bathroom reading if necessary. The breadth is pretty startling from tracking airline flights ("FlightTrack Pro", $4.99) to reporting Elvis sightings ("Elvis Mobile", Free). There's a great music section, Rockin' Out, that includes the best apps for naming that tune ("Shazam", Free), sharing music ("Simplify Music", $5.99), or robot crooners ("Bebot", $1.99) where an animated robot sings whatever ditty you compose on the spot. The offbeat selections are combined with more predictable ones such as "Facebook" (Free) for (unsurprisingly) Facebook, "Yelp" (Free) for local recommendations, and "Stanza" (Free) for reading books (with "Kindle for iPhone" receiving honorable mention). Some of Clark's choices are arguable, of course, but it's hard to beat the easy readability and genuine usefulness of his small, 228-page book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Here ya go, iPhone Admirers....
With the number of iPhone apps approaching 100,000, this title may show you some things about what's out there for you iPhone nuts. And, give you ways to find new ones when they surface. This selection gives you ways on over 200 ah-ha apps that can benefit you and yours......

Another winner from Safari/O'Reilly

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent place to start for new iPhone owners.
When a box of O'Reilly books descended upon my desk, the book that caught my eye because of it's full color contents and beautiful cover was "Best iPhone Apps" by Josh Clark. From the front cover alone, I recognized about half of the apps that were going to be reviewed.I have to admit, I am iPhone app junky. I have pages upon pages of apps installed on my first generation iPhone, and am always reading the internet for reviews and suggestions for more and more apps to try.

Truthfully, I didn't think that a book on iPhone apps was such a great idea. Apps come and go at a rather quick rate on the iTunes store. What's in today could be out tomorrow. But with all things, those of substance have a way of sticking around.I am online enough that I get my recommendations for apps so I didn't think that a book would help me much.

Then I loaned the book for the weekend to a new iPhone user. A coworker had just gotten his government issued iPhone a week before, and he was looking for suggestions on apps to try out. After going through the book, he came back to work on Monday having filled out five pages on his iPhone with new apps as suggested in this book. He couldn't say enough nice things about being able to sit on the couch, flip through the book, then go to the app store on his iPhone and download app after app.

The book is organized by into seven major categories of apps. Each of those categories is further subdivided the best 8 or 9 apps in that category. Each app gets a full-page description including screen captures, summary, pricing and app developer contact information. For most of the best of apps, the picks are apps that I currently already use, so it would seem that I agree with Mr. Clark's best of selection process.

I would recommend this book to someone new to the iPhone and someone who would rather flip through a book than scour the various iPhone app review sites on the internet to get started on their iPhone app collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suzie Housley, Midwest Book Review
With the invention of the iPhone a new era in the technology world emerged. An iPhone is not a simple device that allows a person to make a call. Instead, this invention enables a user to discover new and exciting applications that can help simplify their life.

With over a thousand applications to choose from, a new user can quickly become overwhelmed at what to select to download for their phone. With Josh Clark's Best iPhone Apps: The Guide for Discriminating Downloaders he has conducted in-depth research that was needed to reveal the best applications that Apple has to offer.

The book is broken down into seven different categories that include:

-At Work

-On the Town

-At Leisure

-At Play

-At Home

-On the Road

-For Your Health

Each section highlights the best iPhone applications that relate to the topic. What I found impressive was each application listed the price and a short summary of its strengths. This book explored both free and paid applications. It allowed the reader to compare what they would receive from a paid to a free application.

Being a new owner of an iPhone, I was so impressed with this book. It offered me the knowledge I needed to get the most out of my phone. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is new to the iPhone or iPod Touch. The wealth of information contained in this one book is invaluable.

How Grids Help You Build Better-Looking Pages Documents
by Josh Clark
It’s not always obvious, but just about every professional layout is built on top of a very specific formal structure, a sturdy framework lurking under the surface of even the most complex and dizzying designs. For centuries, artists, printers, and designers have organized their compositions with grids composed of horizontal and vertical lines that invisibly slice the canvas into blocks, or grid units, that help the designer to align and size page elements, as you can see here:
A grid keeps things clean, giving you guidelines to provide consistent placement and spacing throughout your document and to ensure well proportioned elements within individual pages. Grids can help to organize any design, but they’re particularly helpful in providing internal consistency to lengthy documents like books, magazines, or newsletters.
The previous figure shows a pair of pages from the catalog, both of them organized with a six-column grid. For standard portrait pages like these, it’s common to use five- or six-column grids, but that doesn’t mean that you have to crowd your content into five or six narrow columns. Those columns are simply your building blocks, the lines of an invisible ruler that you use to line up your page elements. A six-column grid might contain only two text columns, for example. Both text columns could be three grid units wide, or one could be four and the other two. Or you could reserve one column entirely for white space. While the grid itself is built of uniform blocks, in other words, the design elements that you build on top of it can be all different sizes.
Using alignment guides
You build a grid in Pages using alignment guides, vertical and horizontal guidelines which you conjure from Pages’ rulers and place anywhere on the page, like a virtual T-square. These lines aren’t part of the document itself—they’re visible only when you’re editing, and they don’t show up when you print. They’re unique to every page of the document—every page has its own set of alignment guides that you can tweak and nudge without affecting guides on other pages.
You pluck vertical guides from the vertical ruler, and horizontal guides from the horizontal ruler. To add an alignment guide, choose View-->Show Rulers. Click anywhere inside the ruler and drag the cursor into your document—your pointer now has a blue guideline in its craw, as shown here:
Add alignment guides to your page by clicking in the ruler and dragging into the document. Pull horizontal guidelines (left) out of the top ruler and vertical guidelines (right) from the left ruler. As you drag, Pages shows you the distance of your guideline from the edge of the page.
Drop the line wherever you want it in your document. To move an alignment guide, just drag it to its new location. To remove it entirely, drag it out of the document, and the guide goes up in a puff of smoke.
When you add or move objects, the objects snap to these alignment guides, jumping over to line up automatically with these magnetic guides whenever you drag objects within a few pixels. This makes it effortless to keep things aligned, neatly avoiding the dreaded “one pixel off” syndrome.

I'm not a fan of using online help with software.I like to have the manual right next to me and the iWork 09: The Missing Manual is right on. It is easy to follow and has a wealth of information. This is the second "Missing Manual" topic I've purchased and I highly recommend it and all the rest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is an essential guide for using iWork'09.I was a PC user and a Microsoft Office user so it was very difficult for me when I changed over to a MAC and to iWork'09.I didn't know what to do and this manual cleared it all up for me.All the answers I need are right there in this book.I highly recommend it to everyone who is trying to learn iWork'09.

Am still working on it - it's so comprehensive.

Worth the money? definitely (get a used copy).

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous Book
This is a great book that goes along with iWork 09.However, be alerted to the fact that you can buy the same book from iTunes for your iPhone or iPad for $4.99.

5-0 out of 5 stars iWork09: The Missing Manual
iWork is truly a good program and this book is the best at getting to know how to maneuver around it.Enough detail, yet not overwhelming, itis860 pp. including the index. However, iWork is a three function program and the complete and straightforward explanations in this book due justice to the program. The book, like Apple programs, is easy to use and lets the user feel in control. You can take it one step at a time and easily skip around the book to the section you want. My first "The Missing Manual" and I like it. ... Read more

  • Learn to use iPhone controls the Apple way
  • Create your own personality-packed visuals
Ten Tips for Crafting Your App’s Visual Identity

  • Choose a personality. Don’t let your app’s personality emerge by accident. Before you start designing, choose a personality for your app. The right personality for the right audience and features makes an app irresistible and creates a bonafide emotional connection. Tapworthy designs have the power to charm and beguile.
  • Voices (left) has a Vaudeville personality appropriate to a funny-voices novelty app. iShots Irish Edition (right) creates a gritty dive-bar ambience for its collection of drink recipes.

  • Favor standard controls. Because they’re commonplace, the standard set of controls is sometimes dismissed as visually dull. Not so fast: commonplace means familiarity and ease for your audience. Conventions are critical to instant and effortless communication. Before creating a brand new interface metaphor or inventing your own custom controls, ask whether it might be done better with the built-in gadgetry.

  • A coat of paint. Standard controls don’t have to be dreary. Use custom colors and graphics to give them a fresh identity. This technique requires a light touch, however; don’t distract from the content itself or drain the meaning from otherwise familiar controls.
  • Wine Steward uses standard lists (known as table views in iOS) but creates a vintage ambience by draping a backdrop image across the screen. The app adds a parchment graphic to the background of each table cell, making each entry appear to be written on an aged wine label. The burgundy-tinted navigation bar maintains the app’s wine flavor.

  • • You stay classy. Luxurious textures applied with taste increase your app’s perceived value.

  • • Keep it real. Realistic lighting effects and colors create elements that invite touch and create an emotional attachment. They also provide subtle guidance about what your audience can interact with.

  • • Borrow interface metaphors from the physical world. Lean on users’ real-world experience to create intuitive experiences. People will try anything on a touchscreen, for example, that they’d logically try on a physical object or with a mouse-driven cursor. Besides these practical benefits, using an everyday object as an interface metaphor imbues an app with the same associations that folks might have with the real McCoy--a shelf of books, a retro alarm clock, a much-used chessboard, a toy robot.

  • • Don’t be afraid to take risks. Make sure your interfaces are intuitive, sure, but don’t be afraid to try something completely new and different. Designers and developers are hatching fresh iPhone magic every day, and there’s still much to explore and invent. While you should look hard at whether you might accomplish what you need to do with standard controls, it’s also worth asking, Am I going far enough?

  • The app icon is your business card. The icon carries disproportionate weight in the marketing of your app, and it’s important to give it disproportionate design attention, too. Be descriptive more than artistic. Make your app icon a literal description of your app’s function, interface, name, or brand.

  • Use a dull launch image. Disguise your app’s launch image as the app background for a faster perceived launch. Always cultivate the illusion of suspended animation when switching in and out of your app.

  • Be kind to new users. Provide simple welcome-mat pointers for first-timers. Beware of more complex help screens; they’re warning signs of an overcomplicated interface.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every iOS Developer needs this book
I had the opportunity to meet the author of Tapworthy earlier this year at SXSW where he led a session on UX for the iPhone. At the end of the session, I knew we had to bring him into our office to speak to our creative department on mobile UX and design.

While this book is most definitely targeted at iPhone, there is an abundance of information that is applicable to mobile applications in general. Any designer or developer should grab a copy of this book and use it often.

There are a lot of great apps available in the AppStore, and with more arriving daily, only those that provide value and offer GREAT usability and design will be successful. This book is your guide to create stand-out, gorgeous applications.

2-0 out of 5 stars You can get most of the info in the book for Free
Generally an OK book with a lot of fillers and rehashing though. The author mentions HIG which is more substantive than the book itself.

Download the Human Interface Guidelines produced by APPLE at [...] or just Google Human Interface Guidelines

Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Staple read for any developer/designer
It introduces a lot of common sense concepts that are reinforced by a good a narrative and some excellent examples. I have referred many people to this book already and I hope they find it as useful and enlightening as I did. If you are doing/want to know about mobile application development, buy this. If you want a good read and to discover some hidden iPhone application gems, buy this.

5-0 out of 5 stars should be in every developers library
finally!some guidance for developers as they design their apps...much needed (have a look at the app store for some real clunkers that could have used the advice and instruction from this book)

even if you have a design background you'll benefit from this book.well laid out, lots of examples and 'real world' writings.proving design is as important as the code you write.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Purchase For iPhone/iPod/iPad Developers
Buy It.

Wait, I didn't explain, so sorry.

There's no doubt that the iPhone/iPod/iPad Developers medium for development has been the hottest in quite some time, and this writer feels that this is just the tip of the iceberg, and not any kind of fad.Making great apps for the user that touches as opposed to moving a mouse is a different science, a different kind of beast. The thing that makes this so important, is that we as humans find that touching is more the 'right' way to do things, it just feels 'right' and is easier for nearly anyone. If you want to get the most of getting around the interface, creating icons, layouts, anything that relates to this type of development, you MUST buy this book. Not only will it turn you into a better developer for this platform, you will enjoy the writing and overall feel in FULL COLOR.

It's great, now go get it and enjoy the quality yumness of this book!!

2-0 out of 5 stars worth a read for beginners
It's not that this book was bad, it was pretty decent, just not the holy grail to screenwriters. It does a decent job covering all the major elements of screenwriting from conceptualizing, to the story process to script format to business and legal advise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches you to build a career, not win the lottery
The bare Bones Book of Screenwriting is the perfect starting point. It's written in a friendly, knowledgable and razor-sharp witty voice. I liked how it has 3 simple chapters, story, format and business. I felt like i got some real insight into the reality of screenwriting for beginners. The author doesn't tell you how to write a script and sell it for a million dollars. Instead he teaches you how to start thinking of screenwriting step by step... by building essential story skills, technical conventions, starting small by building credits, contacts and gaining ground in the industry. Every other book I've read wants you to believe you can win the lottery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bare Bones Recommended
The few dollars to buy this book is definitely worth it. It's an incredibly valuable tool which I reference from time to time being heavily involved in my own business that focuses on development.

I've read various books on screenwriting at film school, but in my opinion, no other book does a better job at simplifying the process and actually inspiring you to start writing your script. I've always been confused at where you start and this book helped me get going in that perspective.

It's really the simplest explanation I've ever read that helped me understand plot, format, and the reality of marketing my screenplay. It's a quick read and actually takes the confusion away. ... Read more

Mathis played club soccer at a young age for Rockdale Youth Soccer Association, and then for AFC Lightning, a Georgia powerhouse producing players such as current U.S. international Ricardo Clark, in Fayetteville. He played school ball for Heritage High School, a state champion, and played college soccer at the University of South Carolina. Mathis was drafted sixth overall by the Los Angeles Galaxy in the first round of the 1998 MLS College Draft. After two and a half years with Los Angeles, Mathis was awarded to the MetroStars in the dispersal draft after the Galaxy signed Mexican forward Luis Hernández. Mathis immediately took his game to a new level, flashing an "I NY" shirt after scoring goals and breaking the MLS record by scoring five goals in a game against the Dallas Burn on August 26, 2000. He finished second in the league in scoring with 16 goals and 14 assists and was named to the MLS Best XI. 2001 saw Mathis score seven goals in his first six games, including the league's eventual Goal of the Year on a half-field run against Dallas. Product Description
In the 1960s, a trio of rebellious young gangsters, the Gallo boys, sought to overthrow the reigning New York Mafia Dons and create a dynasty for themselves—an underworld revolution that was fueled by their leader’s immersion into the era’s countercultural revolution. The Gallo boys are steeped in legend, from being the subject of a Bob Dylan ballad to serving as inspiration for The Godfather trilogy to appearing in photo spreads in Life. Yet never before has their complete story been told.

Now, “with the authority, swagger, and flavor of a true insider” (ForeWord magazine) Tom Folsom finally gives Red Hook, Brooklyn’s most notorious figures their due and captures the radical spirit of 1960s New York City. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Oh please!
Very, very tough read. With this subject this could have been a great read.So difficult to follow makes this even more of shame. The writer is almost trying to hard to be a writer.Going out of his way to be some kind of "hip" writer to try and get you into the times but is so far off it makes you want to put this book down for good. Then there are times where it holds your interest for a few pages then not.Great subject for true crime fans but as I said, Not a good read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Interesting topic....Poorly written
First, I'm thinking this book was written to create a television documentary. There was such potential to present this story of Joe Gallo and sadly, the "story" skipped so much it was hard to follow.Secondly, I can't imagine the author is lazy.Just to write any book least of all one that is nonfiction is a serious and challenging undertaking. However his writing style seemed lazy to me.Failing to attribute quotes to characters in a conversation, I found it difficult to know who was saying what.Okay, it's a book and not a screenplay? Wait, maybe it was a screenplay?

With the parallels and links to The Godfather stories, Joe Colombo, Profaci, Persico, Gambino, etc., so much more could have put into this book.Even Joe Gallo's entry into New York society might have been interesting.Yet readers are left to an insipid presentation of what might have been.I've read some fascinating books about Giancana, Spilotro, the Westies, Roy DeMeo and even "Joey the Hitman".All were very well done. Clearly we tend to romanticize members of the mafia and yes they have been cancers on our society but they are figures of the American experience. I'm disappointed to say the least.

To put into context about the potential this book had, "potential means you ain't done nuthin' yet."This book does nothing.Try again Mr. Folsom, I'm ready to read something well done.

1-0 out of 5 stars unreadable!
The cover for the hardback or the paperback are the only positive things that I can say about this "book". It is so disjointed and lacking in actual substance it is truly unreadable. There is just enough information to want to keep reading in hopes that author will actually get to the point. Sadly, he never does. It feels like he was trying to write a screenplay not a biography. It was so frustrating, however, that I hit Google and looked up Crazy Joe and his history. I suggest that you save your money and go buy a cup of coffee at your favorite coffeehouse and log on and read about a truly interesting character in U.S. history.

2-0 out of 5 stars cool cover boring story
I was all excited to read this especially with the Kerouac and Dylan references. I'm 1/2 way through the book and I just want to finish it and sell it on here. I'm not interested in the characters at all. Don't even bother with this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A mob reader MUST!!
Great book about organized crime. I didn't realize the Gallo brothers stirred up the 50's and 60's mob to that extent. A fun read. ... Read more
