Excerpt: Barbara Carrera (born Barbara Kingsbury on December 31, 1945) is a Nicaraguan-born American film and TV actress as well as a former model. She is best known for her roles as Bond girl Fatima Blush in Never Say Never Again and as Angelica Nero on the television series Dallas. Barbara Kingsbury was born in San Carlos, Nicaragua. Her mother, Doña Florencia Carrera, was a Nicaraguan of European and Native ancestry, and her father, Louis Kingsbury, was a U.S. employee of the American embassy in Nicaragua. There is some uncertainty regarding her year of birth, which some sources give as 1947 or 1951, but most list 1945. (She apparently prefers to say 1953.) Kingsbury came to the U.S. at age ten and studied at the St. Joseph Academy in Memphis. She moved to New York at the age of fifteen. Kingsbury began a career as a model at the Eileen Ford agency at the age of 17, at which point she changed her last name to her mother's maiden name, Carrera. In 1972, she appeared on the screen in a publicity role for the Chiquita bananas. Her first film role was as a fashion model in Puzzle of a Downfall Child (1970), which fared poorly at the box office. In 1976, she earned her first Golden Globe nomination for her role in The Master Gunfighter. She later played in such films as The Island of Dr. Moreau, Lone Wolf McQuade, Condorman, Point of Impact, Tryst, and Embryo. For her portrayal of the villainess Fatima Blush in the James Bond movie Never Say Never Again, she earned a 1984 Golden Globe nomination for "Best Performance by an Actress In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture". She worked opposite Laurence Olivier in Wild Geese II the next ye...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1644360 ... Read more

Chapters: Films Set in Nicaragua, Films Shot in Nicaragua, Nicaraguan Film Actors, Walker, Barbara Carrera, Gabriel Traversari, the Mosquito Coast, Lya Barrioz, List of Central American Submissions for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Se le Movió El Piso: a Portrait of Managua, Under Fire, List of Nicaraguan Films, Alsino and the Condor. Excerpt: Walker is a 1987 Acid Western film directed by Alex Cox. The film based on the life story of William Walker (played by Ed Harris), the American filibuster who invaded Mexico in the 1850s and made himself President of Nicaragua shortly thereafter. It was written by Rudy Wurlitzer and scored by Joe Strummer, who also plays a small role as a member of Walker's army. The film, released in 1987 and which by the end is intentionally full of anachronisms such as helicopters, Zippo lighters, automatic rifles, and a car passing a horse carriage, was made in Nicaragua during the American-sponsored Contra War. Alex Cox first visited Nicaragua in 1984, during the national election campaign for which Daniel Ortega became president, to see if conditions were as bad as the American media had reported. He discovered that this was not the case. The filmmaker was persuaded to return by two wounded soldiers from the Sandinista army. He later learned of the historical Walker from an article in Mother Jones that was largely about US foreign policy in Central America and decided to bring his story to the screen. A history professor at the University of California lent Cox a library card so he could do more research on Walker. "The more I read about him the more bizarre this seemed", Cox remembers. He hired Rudy Wurlitzer to write the screenplay because, according to Cox, "He understands American guys and the mad i... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=413426 ... Read more
