Product Description
Funny and gentle, John Candy was loved by millions of movie fans for playing ture-to-life characters. Whether as the irrepressible bon vivant in Splash, the misunderstood slob in Uncle Buck, or the generous lonely salesman in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, John Candy struck a perfect balance between self-deprecating humor and irresistible, emotional warmth. But behind the scenes, beneath the booming laughter, award-winning journalist Martin Knelman paints a compassionate portrait of john Candy--a man blessed by comic genius and goodness of heart who was ultimately an sadly undermined by self-doubt and misguided ambition.

5-0 out of 5 stars life of john candy
this book is what it is and the only thing is that have time to read it from cover to cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars as good as it could be
Actually, the author interviewed me for this book, as John and I were close friends. If it is found lacking in depth, it is only because John's actor friends closed ranks and very few would speak to Mr. Knelman about him, probably for fear of potential yellow journalism. In Toronto, Mr. Knelman is presently Arts critic for The Toronto Star and has an excellent reputation. At the time of writing, Mr. Knelman wrote for The Globe and Mail, Canada's most respected newspaper. Perhaps if more people had been aware of this, much more, insightful commentary could have been written. Mr. Knelman quoted me exactly and did not attempt to spin anything I said to him. It's really an indictment on journalism that so few trusted the author enough to grant interviews. Perhaps the definitive biography is yet to be written. I hope that Mr. Knelman revisit this project and update it some time. This book, under the circumstances, was as good as it could be and I am proud to be part of it. Jonathan O'Mara, Toront

2-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
This book seems to be the only one I can find having to do withJohn Candy, so I can't abandon it completely until something better comes along.

I'll save the book from a one-star rating because it is mildly enjoyable to learn about the life of the man, but the faults of the book outweigh its merits.

For instance, the author likes to annoy with his insistence on getting his fill of being a movie critic and putting down virtually every film/tv show John Candy appeared in, with the exception of "SCTV" and "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles." Instead of giving us insight into the making of the films, he seems to have more fun telling the reader how bad they are, and his opinion of the acting of the rest of the cast. There is nothing here for movie purists; as mentions of life on the set are limited to phrases of how everybody loved John and so forth. Good for reminiscing, but not for reading.

Second, the author is too heavyhanded in parts. While Candy's childhood is hardly referenced, nor is his family life; long-winded anecdotes about his business dealings with Wayne Gretzky and Bruce McNall, former owner of the LA Kings (NHL) occupy much of the book. Those familiar with Candy's films and not his early television work will feel shut-out at the beginning, as it is obvious the author is partial to the latter rather than the former. There is a frustrating lack of balance to the flow of story, particularly at the end. It seems as if the author wearied of writing about Candy and finished rather quickly, as the conclusion of the book felt stale and hollow. Scant sentences after passages on Candy's death go by, and the book has come to an end. Disappointing when it took so long to finish the introduction.

To further infuriate, the quotes taken from personal friends and fellow actors seem to have been lifted heavily from magazines and other sources, rather than anything from the author's own sweat and blood. Although put together in a satisfactory fashion, one cannot help but wish for deeper commentary and juicier gossip than this book only touches on. For all its talk about "deep, hidden sadness," this book fails to deliver on anything "deep."

4-0 out of 5 stars An OK Biography
All in all, I thought this was a pretty decent book.Even though the author doesn't speak much of John Candy's childhood, there is a lot about how he rose to becoming a star. The only things that I don't like in this book are:
1. The author always spells words like "Honor" and "Favorite" like this: Honour; Favourite.

2. The author acts like too much of a critic. He seems to have something against John Hughes and kind of makes him out to be a bad movie maker. He makes certain films like Ferris Beuler's Day Off and Uncle Buck seem like bad movies. He also says something like the Great Outdoors is a ripoff of National Lampoons Vacation. But the only thing those two films have in common is that they involve a family on a vacation and everything goes wrong, and that John Candy appeared in both of them.

Other than that, this book was alright.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating book
I really liked this book and in fact, couldn't put it down.I read it in one sitting.Martin Knelman did an excellent job in documenting what was really a very sad story.I grew up in Toronto and was a fan of John Candy, watching his career from the earliest days of SCTV.I found this book to be a very accurate and an interesting historical review of the Canadian TV and media industry.Candy clearly made an amazing number of poor career choices but was also taken advantage of by many people in the show business industry which is unfortunate. This book would make a good movie. ... Product Description
For eight years after her untimely death in 1991, the evidence of artist Candy Jernigan's life was stored in a quiet Manhattan basement. Drawers and shelves were crammed with paintings, collages, drawings, journals, and eclectic installation pieces like Ninety-nine Bottles of Beer on the Wall-composed of, well, ninety-nine small laboratory bottles of beer on a wall. Little known until now outside a circle of New York's artistic avant-garde, Jernigan's one-of-a-kind talent is finally brought to light in Evidence. The works collected here reveal a fierce and funny creative spirit, an artist whose commitment to documenting life as she really found it led her not only to record sample swipes of the food she consumed, but also to stuff a roadkill rat and lovingly arrange it in a diorama. Jernigan's method-using the precision of a scientist to reveal the souls of discarded objects-makes her advocacy of the overlooked at once surprisingly charming and thought-provoking. Including four gatefolds, Evidence is an art book that gives readers a witty, transformative vision of the stuff that composes our lives-and bears witness to the genius of a truly original thinker. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Evidence: The Art of Candy Jernigan
I waited years to get this book and it was not like the review. It was more like a travel journal then her art work.Would like to see more of her art work. Was not worth the wait.

5-0 out of 5 stars a touching book
This is a great book. Not only is it well-organized, it also shows a great deal of love and empathy for the artist. Candy's work grabs the viewer's attention like the work of few other artists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revolutionises the mundane!!!
This book has become one of my bedside companions, and certainly will make you reflect upon the world in a manner that is foriegn. It is nothing like you will have ever seen, and it is more wonderful than you can imagine.

In Candy's world, everything; the smears of sauces, the crusts of bread, the crack vials found in New York, a crushed saucepan, a dead rat and the bottletop nearby Jim Morrison's grave, become worthy of attention and transformed into art.

She will make you peer at the sidewalk, wondering about the origins of that dust, make you pocket that docket in the desire to transform into a collage of your day's events.

While much of this book is her collected items, there is life to be found in her minute drawings of bugs and sausages, her tiny print and evidence of her personality is found within her dream based art.

Contrary to the previous reviewer, I find this book marvellously and wonderfully beautiful. In the tiny collections and wry but subtle observations of Candy, her life is documented and her personality radiates to the reader.

This book, seemingly a collection of food scraps and other tidbits, is evidence of her life, yes, but evidence of the beauty we can find within the seemingly mundane, the tiny, if only we give that bread crust, the leaves in the Pere La-Chaiseand that dust a chance to be noteworthy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Evidence:The Art of Candy Jernigan
This weekend I read and looked through "Evidence:The Art of Candy Jernigan."It's a fast biography with lots of pictures from Candy Jernigan's journals. It's an amazing and inspiring book.

Jernigan's journals aren't pretty but they are witty and wry and artistic.Candy included smears of food from her meals, dust collected from the steps of the Parthenon, and crack vials collected from the streets of New York.Toward the end of her life, she chronicled lists of the medications and treatments she took to fight liver cancer.(She died in 1991 at the ripe old age of 39.)

Candy's journals show that she LIVED and lived big. It's a pity she's gone but we're lucky she was here and left her wonderful journals behind.

5-0 out of 5 stars How well do you remember your last vacation?
How well do you remember your last vacation? Or a great meal? What do youdo to record the beauty around you? Do you notice the horrors of everydaylife to which so many people are oblivious? Ms. Jernigan was aconsumate story teller. Her stories are not of the obvious, but of thethings most of us overlook, ignore and wish we could remember. Absorb thisbook and you'll never take a trip again without thinking of her work. This book is a true delight. The visual content is wonderful, the textinformative and reserved, and the book's design and construction is almostas unique as the subject matter. If you are an artist, traveller - if youare alive - this book should be in you library. More importantly, in youlife. ... Read more

Product Description
In the 26 years since The Control of Candy Jones was first published, the controversy surrounding this wrenching tale of how one of America's most famous models was used by the CIA as a human guinea pig in its infamous mind control experiments, has never completely vanished. It has remained a "cult book," fueling the cause of critics of the CIA, and further defining the now proven (and accepted) thesis that the minds of certain people can be manipulated and controlled, in this instance, for evil purposes.20th Century Fox paid significant money for it as a film vehicle for Jane Fonda, yet never produced the movie despite attempts at screenplays by three of Hollywood's best, and has refused to sell the rights to the many producers who've expressed interest in making the film. Why? The CIA attempted to suppress the book, as did one of the doctors, a physician to the stars, who spearheaded the intelligence agency's mind control experimentation. This edition, with a new foreword by the author, presents another opportunity for every concerned citizen to share the compelling tragedy suffered by Candy Jones during that dark, tumultuous period in our history known as the "Cold War." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I Believe This
I have books by two other people, though not as well thought out as this one.I believe these claims because it is so unlikely that these three got together.Besides, Candy Jones ran her own business and has a very logical, pragmatic, mind. She also had enough money to get to doctors who she trusted to help get her back to normal, or at lest function as normal.

I listened to her on the radio and remember her not wanting to tell this story because it is embarrassing and she was so afraid of the people who did this to her.

She warned people to take a tape recorder with them to the doctor's office.I respected Candy very much and was so sorry to hear that her patriotic motivations were turned around by the government to cause her harm.

I was Conservative at the time, the first two books I read, for entertainment mostly, were very disjointed, hard to read, and not organized properly. But the thought did occur to me that if these women had gone through what they claimed and did not get a lot of serious help, perhaps that is the way that they would write.

When I read about Candy, who I respect, it was the start of my entire political outlook changing because there is no way that I can deny her story.

It appears as though many of the things that we used to accuse the Soviets of are things that we are guilty of, too.

I recommend this book to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very readable book of mind control by a CIA-military doctor.
I couldn't put this book down once I started it.It gives an account of how the military and CIA gained her trust, then used drugs and hypnosis to split her into two personalities to make her into a Manchurian-Candidate like person to do their bidding. This is the most readable book I have read on mind-control. I would recommend read this book FIRST to gain an understanding of mind-control, THEN read the other books. ... Read more

Excerpt:Rowing club logo The Argonaut Rowing Club is an amateur rowing club in Toronto, Ontario . It is located on Lake Ontario at the foot of Dowling Avenue, south of Lake Shore Boulevard West , west of Exhibition Place . The club was founded in 1872. In the past, the club fielded teams in ice hockey and football , and the football team continues today as the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League . History The club, the oldest and largest of its type in Canada , dates back to 1872, founded by a group of amateur rowsmen known as the Orioles , which had been participating in races in southern Ontario in the 1860s. The founders chose the blue colours of Oxford and Cambridge universities (the "Double Blue") as the club colours. The original club house was at the foot of York Street in Toronto Harbour . It was only large enough for one boat, replaced by a larger clubhouse which was destroyed by fire in 1879 and rebuilt. The club relocated to the current Dowling Avenue location in 1921 after the harbour location was redeveloped for port usage, purchasing land along the waterfront within the new breakwater protected shoreline. In 1947, a fire gutted the club house. Argonaut rowing teams have represented Canada at several Olympics. Argonaut teams represented Canada at 1904, 1908, 1912 and 1950 while Argonaut members represented Canada at other Olympics. Club membership declined in the late 1970s and by 1979, the Argonauts only had four members represent the club at the Henley Regatta. The club made a recovery in the 1980s to the current state. Excerpt: Daniel Edward "Dan" Aykroyd, CM (born July 1, 1952) is an Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning Canadian comedian, actor, screenwriter, musician, winemaker and ufologist. He was an original cast member of Saturday Night Live, an originator of The Blues Brothers (with John Belushi) and Ghostbusters and has had a long career as a film actor and screenwriter. Aykroyd was born on July 1, 1952 at the Ottawa General Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He grew up in the Canadian capital where his father, Samuel Cuthbert Peter Hugh Aykroyd, a civil engineer, worked as a policy adviser to Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. His mother, Lorraine (née Gougeon), is a secretary of French Canadian origin, and his brother, Peter, also became a comedy actor. Aykroyd was born with syndactyly (webbed toes), which was revealed in the movie Mr. Mike's Mondo Video and in a short film on Saturday Night Live (Don't Look Back In Anger). He was also born with heterochromia (a condition of having two differently coloured eyes). His right eye is green and his left eye is brown. Aykroyd's great-grandfather Samuel Augustus Aykroyd (1855-), a dentist, had been a mystic and had been involved in Spiritualism, which Aykroyd would have a great interest in, stating that "all that stuff was hanging around the old farmhouse I grew up in, so I was kind of steeped in it". Aykroyd was raised in the Roman Catholic Church and had intended to become a priest until the age of seventeen. He attended St Pius X and St Patrick's, where he was briefly expelled from the latter: he dressed up a pi...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=49650 ... Read more
