3-0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars--Too obedient to old school
Ms. Pickard is a good writer, with the wit to make domestic abuse/murder issues as funny/ironic as they can tastefully be.Reasonably funny, actually, but she does display the multifaceted tragedy of those situations as she goes.

The biggest problem is that this book's characters and plot are developed as though it were a 1950s domestic comedy--her tone and character depth are like Diane Mott Davidson's [an author I like, whose characters somehow end up more winning and less stereotypic, via the extra hundred plus pages per novel she takes to develop things.]Both central and peripheral characters are too simple and unreflective.Pickard does considerably better in her more recent, and longer, The Whole Truth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced & entertaining
In this fourth of the Jenny Cain series Jenny prepares to marry her long-time boyfriend, police dective Geof Bushfield. Before that happens she gets involved with seemingly abused wives who appear to be murdering their husbands. The book delves into the the dynamics of abuse relationships and what happens to the women involved in them.Jenny also questions her forth- coming marriage to Geof while he is questioning if he wants to stay with the force.Although the book was written in 1987 it is still revalent to situations that are happening today.Perhaps the ending is a little too neatly tied up but still an enjoyable read as we get to know Jenny & Geof better. ... "AUDACIOUS AND AMUSING. . . MAY BE THE BEST BOOK YET IN THIS DESERVEDLY CELEBRATED SERIES."

--The Wall Street Journal

It was only the second time Inspector Morse had ever taken over a murder enquiry after the preliminary--invariably dramatic--discovery and sweep of the crime scene. Secretly pleased to have missed the blood and gore, Morse and the faithful Lewis go about finding the killer who stabbed Dr. Felix McClure, late of Wolsey College. In another part of Oxford, three women--a housecleaner, a schoolteacher, and a prostitute--are playing out a drama that has long been unfolding. It will take much brain work, many pints, and not a little anguish before Morse sees the startling connections between McClure's death and the daughters of Cain. . . .

"VERY CLEVERLY CONSTRUCTED. . . Dexter writes with an urbanity and range of reference that is all his own."

--Los Angeles Times

"YOU DON'T REALLY KNOW MORSE UNTIL YOU'VE READ

HIM. . . . Viewers who have enjoyed British actor John Thaw as Morse in the PBS'Mystery!' anthology series should welcome the deeper character development in Dexter's novels."

--Chicago Sun-Times

"A MASTERFUL CRIME WRITER WHOM FEW OTHERS MATCH."

--Publishers Weekly

5-0 out of 5 stars Morse Is Always Fun
"The Daughters of Cain" proves once again that Colin Dexter, who is himself a champion crossword puzzle solver, is never satisfied with telling a simple story with a simple solution. He's of the old locked door mystery genre. The more convoluted and labyrinthine the murder plot and solution, the more fun for him. Dexter's Inspector Morse explores many twists and turns in the case before he stumbles on the right one. His hapless cohort Sergeant Lewis often supplies more commonsense paths.
Usually Dexter readers are baffled and shaking their heads at the end, but it's fun to be led astray. We love to see Morse sparring with Lewis and drinking his daily ration of pints in pubs where he often snares Lewis into springing for more than his share of the grog. What bothers Lewis most about his boss, more than his arrogance, his stinginess, and his complacency, is his total lack of gratitude. While Morse does the brain work, Lewis does the donkey work. (Now "the ill-used Lewis" has his own television series so toeing the mark does pay off.)
In this one Felix McClure, a professor at Oxford is stabbed, and the murder weapon, a knife, becomes extremely important in this complex tale. Knives have seldom been moved around as much as in this baffling case. At times it seems as if too many knives are involved. Drugs, undergraduates, a hooker, a drugs supplier--all are a part of the plot.
Morse once again falls for an attractive woman, Ellie in this case, a young woman, and, as usual women are attracted to Morse. He has some magnetic charm that draws them to him even though he is the perennial curmudgeon.
When Edward Brooks, a scout at an Oxford college, turns up a corpse, Morse suspects three women: Brooks's maltreated wife Brenda; Julia, an employer whom Brenda has befriended, andBrenda's daughter Ellie.
Coincidences play a big part in the plotting and the way that characters intersect sometimes defies belief. Two-thirds of the way into the book you know who-dunnit, but you don't know if anyone will be caught. The solution seems obfuscated and needlessly convoluted but it's a fun sojourn.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining
"The Daughters of Cain" is very entertaining. It is the first Colin Dexter mystery I have read. However, I didn't understand why a woman who knows her husband has committed a murder and the police are after him, throws the evidence away, then kills him. Why didn't Mrs. Brooks give the evidence to the police or tell them about it? Her husband would have spent the rest of his life in jail and she would have gotten rid of him that way. Also, her employer seems to be altruistic in helping dispose of the husband. She is dying and has nothing to lose. Actually, the employer, Mrs. Stevens, has left Mrs. Brooks to go to jail when they are caught. I know this is a novel, but the relationship between Morse and Ellie Smith seemed unprofessional. This is a very well written book and entertaining 'til the end, but flawed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Read and enjoy the writing and characters more than the plot
Colin Dexter's 'Morse' series is an acquired taste, and to be honest, I think I've acquired more of a taste for his characters rather than the stories. The plot of this one didn't quite sustain itself through to the end, but the interaction of Morse, Lewis, and the rest of the inhabitants of Dexter's 'universe' are so well-written that the plots are almost secondary.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Set apart from the rest of their kind by the sign of the murderer...the mark of Cain."
In one of the best of the Inspector Morse series, author Colin Dexter juggles several intricate plot lines, keeping the reader totally absorbed in each subplot and, especially, in the lives of the characters before he deftly brings them all together in a satisfying ending. Assigned to take over the investigation of the stabbing death of Oxford professor Felix McClure in his campus quarters, Inspector Morse learns that a student neighbor of McClure committed suicide--and was a drug user. Morse, assisted by Sgt. Lewis, his less articulate but clever assistant, begins the murder investigation by exploring whether McClure may have discovered the drug supplier.

At the same time, other plot threads are unfolding: Mrs. Julia Stevens, a well-liked high school teacher of "reluctant learners," celebrates her birthday with a cake made by her housekeeper, a severely abused wife. Ted Brooks, formerly a "scout" (custodian) at McClure's Oxford housing and now a museum guard/guide, has recovered from the heart attack he suffered the night McClure was murdered and has an airtight alibi. Elly Smith, who uses the professional name of "Kay" or "K," a young prostitute, is connected to at least five of the characters (and unites the plot lines). When Ted Brooks is found stabbed to death, and further investigation turns up numerous connections among the various characters, the mystery is off and running. As is always the case in this series, a new woman figures in Morse's life.

Dexter excels here in creating female characters with whom the reader identifies, and as the lives of these women unfold, their attempts to overcome the hardships life has dealt them elicit sympathy and understanding, not only in the reader but in Inspector Morse, too. The mystery is fast paced and filled with unexpected twists and turns, but as it develops and moves to its conclusion, it is the female characters who generate the movement and keep the reader's interest. The satisfying conclusion is surprising, since it does not tie up all loose ends, leaving some uncertainties which are, themselves, highly satisfying. n Mary Whipple

5-0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary book in an extraordinary series!
The Morse series is an extremely intelligent and wonderfully written series. This book is one of the stronger ones in a series of very strong books.Nothing prepares you for the denouement in this book - not even if you've seen the serialized version from BBC.It is powerfully written and hits with an explosive power. In the book Dexter explores the female psyche and does a very good job of depicting the power of female friendships. He also does not hold back any punches when it comes to revenge for past wrongdoings and the effects that evil people have on the people that they are in contact with and live with.It starts with the murder of a College Don, but the case leads Morse down a winding and tortuous path that exposes the power of hate and retribution. On the way he even finds love, and the way that Dexter depicts this fresh blooming love is memorable in the simplicity in which he describes it.It's like watching an unfolding flower. This is a great novel, and I highly recommend this entire series. ... Now that she is behind bars, Archie is finally piecing his life back together. He’s returned home to his ex-wife and their two children. But no matter how hard Archie tries, he just can’t stop thinking about Gretchen…

4-0 out of 5 stars A thrilling sequel
Archie Sheridan, the pill-popping hero cop from Heartsick, is back. He hasn't seen serial killer Gretchen Lowell for months (after seeing her once a week for 2 years) and is trying to put his life back together with his ex-wife and his children. Then a girl's body is found in the woods, reminiscent of Gretchen's first victim, but this time it's tied up with Susan Ward's story about the Senator Castle's past affair with 14 year old Molly Palmer. Gretchen Lowell escapes from prison and Archie is the only one who has the chance to capture her. Can he separate himself from her forever and send her back to jail?

My favorite character in this novel is Gretchen Lowell, the contemporary of Hannibal Lecter. Her prowess at manipulating people is still a big part of the story, but a softer side of her is also shown. She actually cares about Archie and maybe loves him in some twisted way. It was nice to see her a little vulnerable. She is the villain, but she's also sort of an anti-hero. I want her to get caught, but some small part of me wants her to succeed and get away because she's a compelling character. I can see a small glimpse of why Archie is so obsessed with her. Their relationship is more fleshed out in this novel, rationalizing her power over him.

The story is fast paced and exciting. When Gretchen calls Archie from his children's school after she escaped, my heart was pounding. I couldn't put this book down. The two plot lines were handled very well and resolved in interesting ways. I can't wait for what the future holds for these characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will want to read the whole series!
Loved this series. You really get into the characters. It is very graphic in it's descriptions so keep that in mind if you are bothered by that.I think you need to read the series in order to get the most out of it...Heartsick, Sweetheart and then Evil at Heart.Very good crime book/series!

I've long been a fan of Thomas Harris and his Hannibal Lecter series, but Chelsea Cain has managed to get my attention!Continuing the story of detective Archie Sheridan and vicious serial killer Gretchen Lowell, Sweetheart takes place some time after the events of Cain's debut novel, Heartsick.Sheridan is trying to rebuild a life with his ex-wife, shutting out Lowell in the process, and quirky journalist Susan Ward is working on an article about the scandalous activities of a local politician.Things change, however, when two bodies are found in the very same park where the Beauty Killer's (Lowell) first victim was discovered, and before you know it, Sheridan and his family are caught in Gretchen Lowell's web of lies and deceit again.

The thing I like most about Sweetheart is the way it kept my attention throughout the whole book. The interesting plot twists and Gretchen Lowell's deviousness made it hard for me to put it down at all, and I would heartily recommend it to anyone who likes fast-paced, taut thrillers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read it in lass than a day.
This book is Chelsea Cain's follow-up to the thriller Heartsick. I see no reason why anyone who didn't like that book would bother to read this. Many reviewers are complaining about the rampant cursing and (few) descriptions of sex in this book. I don't get it. I mean, these are all consentual adults. What's the problem? And I don't understand why fully grown adults have problems with the f-bomb. But if you do, why are you reading murder mysteries? Murder mysteries are full of cops. And cops, if you've ever watched a movie you'd know, curse all the time. But I digress.

I finished this book in half a day; it was such a quick read. My only gripe was that the B-storyline, like in Heartsick, was lacking. In my opinion. But the book overall was great. Lots of suspense. And I think Gretchen Lowell is one of the most interesting serial killers I've ever seen, and I've seen my share. Luckily, not in person. Other reviewers complained about gratuitous descriptions of what people were wearing and too many scenes with fringe characters (like Susan Ward's hippie mother) but none of that stuff bothered me. Susan's mother serves to better explain why Susan is the way she is. And the descriptions of what people wore didn't bother me either; it was there to give you a better mental picture of these people.

All around I loved it. And I'd highly recommend it to fans of the first book. But if you didn't like the first book, you probably won't like this one either. That feels like it should be obvious, but if you read some of these negative reviews you'll find that it isn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Continuing Tail of a Hottie Serial Killer and the Cop She Lusts After
This is the continuing story of a hot female serial killer and the police detective she can't get enough of. He can't get enough of her as well. They're in lust, infatuated with each other to be sure, maybe even in love. That said, I have to say I came to this book without reading HEARTSICK first, so there are parts of this twisted relationship I had to sus out as the story unfolded.

Archie Sheridan, the police detective, is struggling through his marriage, even as he keeps meeting with the Beauty Killer Gretchen Lowell, you guessed it, the serial killer. Supposedly he's only visiting her in prison (she was caught and arrested in the first novel) to find out about her other victims, but we know there's more to it then that.

But he's got other cases. In fact bodies have been turning up he should be concentrating on. And to make things even more complicated investigative reporter Susan Ward has been after a story about Senator Castle and the rape of a young girl, but Castle and a reporter pal are killed when their car goes off a bridge.

During a prison transfer Gretchen gets a guard to kill the driver (she must really be a hottie), then she kills the guard and escapes, but not before removing his heart and sending it on to Archie, a little memento, something to remember her by. Then the young girl the Senator raped turns up dead. How in all that's holy will Sheridan make sense of all this?

And through it all that nosey reporter Susan Ward wants in on Sheridan's investigation. Can you blame her? However, Archie Sheridan has a bigger problem on his hands. Last book, the one I haven't read yet, Gretchen showed Archie some of her love by torturing him and he's got good reason to believe she's coming back for more. With a wannabe lover like that, who needs enemies?

So, how did I find this book? I found it pretty good, enjoyed the story, despite the fact that I missed the first one. However, if you're reading this and you haven't read HEARTSICK yet, I heartily recommend you read it first, then go on to this one. If HEARTSICK is anything like SWEETHEART, and I have every reason to believe it is, you're in for one heck of a good time. ... Read more
