5-0 out of 5 stars The best of Claremont & Lee...
...which only lasted three whole issues.
By 1991, the X-Men franchise had exploded into heights undreamed of and a second X-Men title was launched, selling a record (that still holds up today) of 8 million copies of its first issue sold.
Unfortunately, it was Claremont's last hurrah (at the time) as THE mutant scribe as editorial edict seemed to favor more input from the artist over the writer and he left the title with issue #3.
Following in his footsteps as writer were John Byrne (who had a miserable time on the gig) and Scott Lobdell (who eventually got the gig) with plot assists from Lee himself.
The art is solid, as artist/inker team of Jim Lee and Scott Williams shines, but takes a noticable change as a rotation of inkers comes in over the pencils.
The writing has a noticable shift, as Claremont's often cliched phrases and structuring is replaced with a different tone and has a more humourous tone to it.
I give this 5 stars in the fact that the first edition had those new commissions by Jeff Matsuda to balance the broken spreads, with dialogue inserted to try and seam them together.

3-0 out of 5 stars 90s comics at their most 90s-ish

This book reprints X-Men issues 1-7 from way back in 1991.They were some of the last issues of Chris Claremont's incredible 10 year run on the title and of superstar artist Jim Lee's run. They were some of the highest-selling American comics since WWII.

And they're not all that good.

After constant changes and movement forward through the 1980's the X-Men return to square 1.They're back in costumes, back in the Mansion, back in the Danger Room and back to fighting Magneto.Claremont tries to explain this regression and does an OK job but it's clear he's not happy with having years of character evolution undone. He leaves by issue 3.

Jim Lee's designs were incredibly popular at the time and (thanks to the 90s cartoon) are some of the most famous X-Men costumes. But his art is often garish, the characters' poses are stiff or awkward and nothing looks natural.Sadly this style would become the template for most of the 90s.

The dialogue is frankly, awful.Fight scenes are covered in dialogue balloons as everyone explains (in detail) what they are doing as they do it.None of the creators seem to get the `show don't tell' rule.

Still, Jim Lee's art can be very good at times, and this is an interesting piece of comic book history showing the transition from the realistic 80s to the extreme 90s.I would not pay $20 for it but at $15 to $10 it's an attractive buy, especially if (like me) you can remember a time this was hottest thing on the stands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jim Lee's X-men glory days
Boy was this a nice trip down memory lane.It collects the first 7 issues of Jim Lee's classic X-men run.It made me very nostalgic and how I do long for the days when Jim Lee could get a comic out on time and I still followed the X-men.One of my favorite comic scenes of all-time is in issue four where Gambit, Wolverine, Jubilee, and Rogue are playing basketball. There was just something so simple and so fun about it.These were the issues that introduced Magneto's Acolytes in a story that was Chris Claremont's last work on X-men after 15 years on the title. This was also the first time, I believe, that we see flashbacks of Wolverine, Sabretooth, and Maverick working together in the Weapon X program. So many of the images from this run are burned into my brain whether it was simple two-page spread of the X-men gathered in a meeting or shots of the X-men leaping into action.I don't have my old X-men comics anymore but I'd definitely like to have this trade in my collection which presents those old comics like they should be, in all their modern glossy paper glory!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Jim Lee era, part 2
Jim Lee made a name for himself in the late 80's with his legendary run on Marvel's Uncanny X-Men series, so it's no surprise that when given the chance to launch a brand new X-Men series in 1991 it broke all previous sales records and was the most talked-about comics event until the "death" of Superman. The Marvel Legends: X-Men - Mutant Genesis trade paperback collects the first seven issues of that new series (Lee's entire run prior to leaving to start Image Comics).

The stories collected here are pretty decent, but aren't the best from ether Claremont or Lee. Claremont's Magneto story is probably the better of the two, as it returns Magneto to villain status in a big way. Lee's story was more dynamic, and had some of the paramilitary flavor he would use as the backbone for his Wildstorm Universe.

The artwork is gorgeous during the first half and a bit of a mess for the remainder of the book. I think deadline issues were to blame, as Lee has a reputation for not being able to stick with a monthly title. He had a few months to get the first few issues done, so naturally they're amazing to look at. The remaining issues are obviously the work of someone who was in a hurry.

My only complaint with this volume is the binding. It seems way too flimsy and after a few readings my copy looks much worse for wear. Maybe Marvel will give this the Premiere Classic hardcover treatment some day.

If you were an X-Men fan in the 1990's, you don't need me to tell you why you should have this volume in your collection. IF you came to the X-Men later, trust me when I say that what Claremont and Lee did on this title definitely influenced today's X-Men.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Art, and 2 Great Stories
This Tradepaperback collectes the first 7 issues of X-Men Volume 2. The first arc is a 3 parter with Magneto and nuclear weapons, the second is with a new villain named Omega Red and is linked to Wolverine's past. the best thing about this book is Jim Lee's art, when you open up a comic book, it should like this, bright colors, amazing art, and muscle-bound characters. A must-have for any X-Men fan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Giant apes, backwoods vampires.. Oh yea and Superman to the rescue
Oh yes the "Man Of Steel" volume 6 review the end of the Man of Steel titled series. Events of these books will push over to the Superman TPB Exile..

Okay I know what your thinking when you pick up the Volume 6 book and look at the cover, "Oh man this is where these guys were running out of ideas for stories, I mean look at this he is going to be battling a giant ape. They have Robin in peter pan shoes and the biggest name next to his is this guy booster gold that I have no idea what he does and whats with the mermaid?"

I was wondering about the giant ape as well..However I had a good idea of who it would end up being thanks to the annimated series cartoon.

This book does finish out the series and yes it has some cameos in the close out that people may enjoy. First off Ronald Reagan makes an appearance as the president. Didnt see that coming did you? (or a guy that looks just like him)

Batman makes yet another appearance in this series and we see Robin for a short time..( but not as short as his shorts are..)

Lets just say this final book is a mixed bag of stuff. First of all we have vampires which can ultimately hurt superman do to their magical background. We have a huge ape that just seems to get bigger as the story goes along, you will see and then Booster gold the annoying ego driven super hero.. along with a few other characters that I will not spell out for you.

I enjoyed this conclusion to the TPB volumes of the series and I believe anyone wanting to see how the series ended should pick this book up for the low price that it is being offered for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most humane superman ever
I wouldn't consider myself an expert on comics (nor I'm interested in becoming one) but I do know the kind of things I really like and for instance John Byrne's version of superman is in my (humble) opinion the most humane one I have ever seen; I mean he is powerful and stuff but he is not a semi-god with unlimited powers capable of breaking all physics laws (time barrier, breathing in water and in space, unlimited strength etc, etc and etc) like previous and most current versions of the character which in my mind makes the character more real (as far as it can be); another thing that I like of this version of Superman is the stories, they are really easy to understand and follow and most important with a solid base and foundation that will prevent them from becoming cheeze and predictable. I have to say that I love reading stories from Superman in the seventies and early eighties but nothing compared to the stories written after "The Crisis" back in 85. I can hardly wait to read the next paperback on this series.

4-0 out of 5 stars 1st year in review
I enjoyed this 6th edition a lot more than I expected to. Byrne just pencils three issues here, the least of the first 6 volumes, but story-wise I found this paperback to be surprisingly entertaining.

Highlights here for me...
* Superman Annual- Titano! Best monkey story I've read in awhile. If you like monkey comics- and really, who doesn't? :)- you might want to give this a try.
*Action 594- Great cover! It's the 1st in an entertaining 2-part story featuring Booster Gold. It's my favorite story in the entire volume. It's also the 1st Byrne pencils we see here- and it begins on page 121(!). The previous editions had Byrne artwork on the 1st page. I love these Booster Gold issues for their clean, cityscape visuals & content. It also briefly guest-stars Batman & Robin.
*Booster Gold 23- Continuing the story from Action 594- Great fun.
*Action 595- Silver Banshee! She looks a lot like some of the girls I went to high school with. Martian Manhunter guest stars!

In all, three annuals are presented, signifying the completion of the 1st great year. I absolutely love what Byrne accomplished with this series- it's amazing to me that he stops after only 2 years! He's gone on record as saying it was largely a negative experience behind-the-scenes; thankfully the 1st year of comics didn't seem to reflect it.

Included in this volume:
*Action Comics Annual #1- John Byrne writes; Art Adams pencils; Dick Giordano inks
*Superman Annual #1- John Byrne writes; Ron Frenz pencils; Brett Breeding inks
*Adv. of Superman Annual #1- Jim Starlin writes; Dan Jurgens & Steve Montano artists
*Action Comics #594- John Byrne writes & pencils; Byrne & Keith Williams inks

5-0 out of 5 stars The Spectacular Ed Hannigan
Just as with the previous Spectacular Spider-Man volumes, this one treats its readers with an all-star lineup of talent: Roger Stern, Bill Mantlo, Jim Mooney, John Byrne, Frank Miller, Al Milgrom, Rick Leonardi, etc. While the talent is without question, I considered knocking my rating down to four stars due to the lack of consistency. It seems no two consecutive issues were produced by the same creative team.In the end I stuck with the five star rating because it is still so enjoyable. The highlight of this volume is the work of Ed Hannigan.Hannigan is a highly underrated artist in comics history and the proof lies within these pages. He is known primarily as a cover artist and for his contribution to the creation of the characters Cloak and Dagger. The stories that he draws are the best in this volume. His cover designs, page layouts and Eisner-esque splash pages are second to none.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular
Some people are turned off by the black and white reprints like these essentials. But you get so much for the money, and there's hours of reading enjoyment. These essentials are a great way to read or reread comics from the past, without having to fork out the large bucks that the after market sellers are asking.Granted some of these issues are corny, but they're still enjoyable to a 40 year old like myself, who grew up reading these issues. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars There is more to the saga, though.
The 20 seasons of Gunsmoke were a record breaker. But there are still
more Gunsmoke genres that deserves coverage.

3-0 out of 5 stars John Byrne pencils- Jerry Ordway inks
3-1/2 stars. I consider volumes 3, 6 & 7 in this series to be about average to slightly above average in quality. In volume 6, Jerry Ordway takes over on inks to lighten Byrne's FF/ Alpha Flight workload. Really, I'm a *huge* Byrne fan, but this Byrne-Ordway team-up just didn't really work for me. They're both well-respected professionals; I just didn't think they were a great artistic match. The visuals in this paperback seem a little bit flat & uninspired- at least when compared to Byrne's earlier work. Even the colors leave a bit to be desired...

I guess it's the writing that saves the day- it's interesting to say the least. I don't know what got into Byrne here, but here's a sample of what you'll get in this, one of the thickest editions in this series: Mephisto & Doctor Strange; eternal torment; a Ben-Johnny-Alicia conflict; the origin of Dr. Doom; the topic of explicit racial conflict & hate; the destruction of the Baxter building; a hate-filled kid; the Hate-Monger; Malice the mistress of hate; the Psycho-Man; Daredevil- the man without fear (issue 281); the Scourge (Secret Wars II #2); and the general topic of vengeance. Yikes!

The Invisible Girl becoming the Invisible Woman is the overall issue here. This might be my least favorite volume in the series, and it's definitely *not* for kids. Thankfully, the Secret Wars II issue brings us Spider-Man, Power Man & Iron Fist, and some much needed comedy relief. I'm probably not the only person who felt Byrne & Ordway weren't the best combination. In the 1st issue we see, "...And introducing the inking wizardry of Jerry Ordway!!!". In the last issue we see, "...And welcome back to Al Gordon inker". I far prefer Byrne-Gordon to Byrne-Ordway, but I think it's best when Byrne inks himself. I have nicer things to say about Ordway in volume 8.

Included in this volume:
*Issue #276- John Byrne writes & pencils; Jerry Ordway inks
*Issue #277- John Byrne writes & pencils; Jerry Ordway inks
*Thing #23- Ron Wilson breakdowns; Bob Layton inks
*Issue #278- John Byrne writes & pencils; Jerry Ordway inks

*Issue #280- John Byrne writes & pencils; Jerry Ordway inks
*Issue #281- John Byrne writes & pencils; Jerry Ordway inks

5-0 out of 5 stars MY Fantastic Four
I was introduced to the Fantastic Four via Marvel's Greatest Comics no. 36, back in the early 1970's; it reprinted the second part of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's introduction of Galactus and the Silver Surfer. I was pretty young at the time and didn't know Kirby from apple butter, but later I learned of the legend of Jack "The King" Kirby and appreciated his and Stan Lee's work on the FF even more. John Byrne's run is considered by many to be second only to the Lee and Kirby run, and this installment in the trade paperback reprinting of his 1980's work on the series sees him firing on all thrusters. This book will make you love the She-Hulk, and it contains the exemplary story of Franklin Richards (Reed and Sue's son) fighting Mephisto, the Lord of the Underworld. Not to be missed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars thrilling
At one time I had every issue of this comic but I had to sell them in tough economic times. It was good to see that the spiderman team-ups of yesteryear still give me the same thrill today.

5-0 out of 5 stars More truly great older stories
This was the golden years for Marvel Team-Up. John Byrne inked a number of issues, and his list of guest stars was unique rather than prancing the same characters through time and again. Minor characters like Woodgod, Captain Britain, Havok, Tigra, Ms. Marvel, Iron Fist, Daughters of the Dragon, and Power Man went alongside Marvel's heavy hitters like Hulk, Iron Man, the Human Torch, Yellowjacket, and Captain America. Fighting alongside them in every issue was Spider-Man, and this was when Spidey was fun.

Most of the stories here are self-contained, with a few going over the course of two issues. All of the stories look great and even though they're in black and white you'll still love reading them. It was shortly after the last issue of this collection (issue 75) that MTU started going downhill both in artwork and story, but every issue here was good. They skipped issue74, which had Spidey teaming up with the 70's cast of Saturday Night Live. I guess there were licensing problems they didn't want to work around. It would have been nice to see Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi again, but I'd rather they skip the issue than fail to print the volume.

Another great "Essential" volume and a nice trip down memory lane for 70's comic fans. Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars The reason the Marvel Essentials were created
The Marvel Essentials were created for several different reasons. One of them was a obvious attempt to get new readers to read comics from the beginning. The second reason why the Marvel Essentials were created was to get cheap issues of old comics that collectors sell for fortunes and get them in a decent price range of roughly $10 (although the prices that have stared to climb, with Marvel Essentials being charged at $12 or $13 which I personally think makes them overpriced)

Marvel Team-Up is a decent book but its nothing to write home about. The stories are the same basic stories that you've read in the first and second volumes (Unlike Marvel Two In One which actually started to become more relevant to the Marvel Universe) and the art's pretty good too. I don't hate Marvel Team-Up but its a book that you would want to get cheaper ... Read more

Very interesting book about the 3 seasons of the USFL from the business point of view.Lots of good inside information. If you are looking for a pure football book this is not it.I wish the author could have included a few pages at the end of the book with stats from the 3 years.I would also have appreciated a few pictures from some of the major events as well as pictures of the various uniforms of the teams or at least logos.Since this book seems to be popular enough to warrant such high used prices, if they bother to reprint the book, they should include a new afterward with updates. This book ends rather abruptly in 1986 with the USFL getting ready to appeal the case and several other things mentioned.Overall though, this is a very interesting read.I enjoyed it.

3-0 out of 5 stars It should have been called, 'The Three Dollar' League...
In Anti-Trust cases, the 'winner' (in
this case we have to '-' the word winner!)
gets the award tripled! For a guy who cl-
aims to have been such an insider, Byrne
misses quite a bit (I had two tryouts w/
the USFL after being a college P/H). But
overall it's worth getting if you don't
have to pay an arm and hoof to get it.
There are also several great websites
dedicated to the memory of the USFL.
Check them out!

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth about a dollar used
This is not really a sports book but a book on the business side of sports. Nothing wrong with that but it's not until year three of the USFL that the author writes anything of note about on-field play.

DO NOT waste over $100 on a used copy of this as it's waaaay too long, in need of serious editing and can be found in any large library.

The worst thing is I had to go online to find out why the jury awarded the USFL only a dollar in the anti-trust lawsuit they won over the NFL. I mean, why was the author unable to explain that when it was the title of the danged book?

4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Read About What Could Have Been
Jim Byrne had a front-row seat to the wild, three-year ride of the United States Football League. He gets a little long winded at times, but all in all, this is a very good book and a must-have for all fans of the old USFL. Byrne sort of sets them up and knocks them down - telling the league's botching of a TV deal, the Donald Trump led campaign to go head to head with the NFL and the eventual "victory" in court. I thought he was especially colorful in the very beginning of the book when he describes Harry Usher trying to keep the 1985 championship trophy from falling apart on him while at the same time the league itself was falling apart all around him. Like I said, Byrne gets a little off the subject from time to time, but it's a great read for any fan of spring football. ... Read more

Excerpt: Robert Gerard Goulet (November 26, 1933 October 30, 2007) was an American Grammy- and Tony Award- winning entertainer. He rose to international stardom in 1960 as Lancelot in Lerner and Loewe's hit Broadway musical Camelot. His long career as a singer and actor encompassed theatre, radio, television and film. Goulet was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, the only son of French Canadian parents Jeanette (née Gauthier) and Joseph Georges André Goulet, a laborer. Through his father he was a descendant of Zacharie Cloutier. Shortly after his father's death, 13-year-old Robert moved with his mother and sister Claire to Girouxville, Alberta, and he spent his formative years in Canada. Goulet's rise to fame started at the age of five when his aunts and uncles blackened his face with burnt cork and prompted him to do Al Jolson impressions. Though his performance was well-received by his relatives, the experience was deeply traumatic for the young Goulet, and left him with performance anxiety which plagued him for many years. Despite this stage fright, Goulet was encouraged by his parents to continue performing. After living in Girouxville, Alberta, for several years, they moved to the provincial capital of Edmonton to take advantage of the performance opportunities offered in the city. There, he attended the famous voice schools founded by Herbert G. Turner and Jean Letourneau, and later became a radio announcer for radio station CKUA. Upon graduating from Victoria Composite high school, Goulet received a scholarship to The Royal Conser...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=326309 ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Venom
Well this book takes me back. When I was still collecting comics, Venom appeared on the scene, and instantly became a classic villain--perhaps _the_ Spider-Man villain. The whole early saga is here, and boy, remember the hair?

3-0 out of 5 stars kind of a misleading title
Like most people said, the title does mislead a little bit. Most of the story was about Spiderman wearing the symbiote suit, not Eddie Brock. The parts that were actually about Venom were awesome, it's just that there were so few of them. It's still worth a read though.

5-0 out of 5 stars good
this graphic novel is goos if you really need to know the history of venom but at times it gete REALLY boring but at the end you will be happy

3-0 out of 5 stars It's OK, but it disappointed me
As you read. "Spider-Man: Birth of Venom" focuses more on Spidey wearing (and eventuelly trying to get free of) his alien costume than in the fan-favorite vilain. Yeah, Venom appears and fights spidey a lot of times, but not enough to call the book "Birth of Venom". The right name would be "the symbiote saga".

5-0 out of 5 stars It's OK, but it disappointed me
tells the entire tale. the editors selected all the comics that told the story and assembled them in a nifty Tocc McFarlene drawn cover. A must for spidey lovers. ... Read more

In 1970, after years of unforgettable work on The Fantastic Four, The Hulk and other super-heroes, legendary comic book writer/artist Jack Kirby came to DC Comics to introduce a new set of characters: The New Gods. These heroes waged epic cosmic battle and inspired numerous other comics creators, and the best of those stories are collected in TALES OF THE NEW GODS.

Darkseid, Orion, Mister Miracle and many other members of the New Gods cast star in these tales by the leading lights of today's comics scene, including Frank Miller (Sin City, THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS), Dave Gibbons (WATCHMEN), Jim Lee (BATMAN, SUPERMAN), Jeph Loeb (BATMAN), Eddie Campbell (From Hell) and many others, who bring their own unique visions to these iconic heroes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful additions to the 4th world mythos!
Having just recently finished the first 3 volumes of the Jack Kirby 4th world omnibus, I had a craving for more, John Byrne and Walt Simonson, being two of my favorite comic book creator's, made picking up this trade an easy choice. Granted these short stories were meant to expand upon the stories presented in the lead features of the books they appeared in, but even standing by themselves they are just super fun looks at the characters of New Genisis and Apokolips. Come on DC, trade up the whole darn Byrne and Simonson run, it was really that good, and deserves the treatment. In the meantime this collection and the previously released Orion trade that includes the first 5 issues by Walt are both enthusiastically recommended for any fan that enjoys truly cosmic scale action adventure without all the dreary angst of most of today's comics.

1-0 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY MISLEADING!
When Amazon sent me an email saying that I might be interested in this because I've bought Frank Miller's works before, I was interested and pre-ordered a copy. But Frank Miller was NOT involved with this!Nor was Jim Lee!This is a collection of several older comics by several different artist and writers.I saw NO trace of either Frank Miller or Jim Lee in this comic, which was pretty much my whole reason for buying the book. There wasn't even much Mother Box shots (I like those things, they're neat).

I give my low review rating ONLY because it was extremely misleading and not what I wanted.I haven't actually read too many of the stories inside.

So if you're just a fan of the New Gods or Mr. Miracle, this book would be for you.But if you want to buy it for Frank Miller, or Jim Lee, you will be extremely disappointed like I am.

4-0 out of 5 stars Channeling The King
In the minds of many, the Fourth World Saga is the greatest achievement of the legendary Jack Kirby.Sure, the Fantastic Four and Thor were great, but they couldn't truly be called "his" (well, depending on who you believe). The Fourth World, however, was pure Kirby - written AND illustrated.DC has done a decent job with their recent reprinting of the entire classic saga of the New Gods, and now they have followed it with a trade collection of related stories by other writers and artists from various sources.

This trade contains Mr. Miracle Special #1, plus shorter stories from Jack Kirby's Fourth World #2 - 20 and Orion #3 - 4, 6 - 8, 10, 12, 15, & 18 - 19.For the most part, these are prequels to Kirby's original works, containing early adventures of the New Gods. There are a few duds, but most fit very well with Kirby's vision.See the origins of Darkseid and Kanto, the early adventures of Scott Free, and even the birth of Orion! The impressive talent list includes Mark Evanier, John Byrne, Walt Simonson, Jeph Loeb, Mark Millar, Steve Rude, Frank Miller, Dave Gibbons, Arthur Adams, Erik Larsen, Rob Liefeld, Eddie Campbell, and Steve Ditko. In the immortal words of The King:"Don't ask, just buy it!"
