Two Great Comedians
Books on tape are great for someone whose car CD player is broken. Just pop in a tape and you're intertained with stuff you'll never hear on the radio. This tape is a tribute to two men who made a deep impact on American humor.

First is George Burns, a man whose radio program with Gracie Allan encouraged a new type of spousal relationship to come forward. This book is sort of like a joke book; it is a succession of stories from Burns' life with punchlines at the end. Not all of them are funny, and you can't beleive all of them, but they're fun to listen to. Milton Berle opens the tape with some comments about his friend.

The second side is an interesting look at Groucho Marx. It is a collection of letters written to his daughter Miriam. She provides commentary for the letters as well as clarification on certain events or lapses of time. The man who reads the letters does so in a Marxish way so it feels as if Marx is actually reading these letters himself. This side of the tape is a gem. ... Read more

An American treasure
This is the first of several books written by the beloved comedian and actor in conjunction with the revival of his film career (he won the Academy Award in 1976 for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Neil Simon's THE SUNSHINE BOYS, a role originally meant for Jack Benny, who died before the film was shot).Along with the usual Broadway and Hollywood anecdotes,George Burns describes his boyhood on New York City's Lower East Side in the early 1900's and his start in vaudeville, as well as his fateful teaming with Gracie Allen.An excellent read not only for his (and Gracie's) fans but also for anybody desiring a glimpse into American life at that time.A delight!

This book is one of George's first and a great one at that!There are many great pictures and stories in this book.Living It Up has a little more about Gracie and a wonderful chapter about George coping with her death. It is very moving.All in all a very very excellent, funny book! ... Read more

Burns' deadpan style of humor does not come off as well in print
One of the best aspects of the comedy material of George Burns was that is was presented in such a deadpan manner. His best lines were delivered with no great buildup and with a minimum of props. In many cases, with the exception of the cigar, he was the comedian, the scenery and all the props combined. In this book, he sets down some of that humor and while it is funny, it in no way approaches the impact that it would have had if Burns had delivered it in person.
It is a combination of ten short vignettes interspersed with interludes that are lists of short jokes. Throughout the book, he dispenses advice with a hint of sage, but most of the time he is making one of his understated jokes. If you are a fan of George Burns and have seen him perform, then you will enjoy the book. However, if you have never seen him deliver his own particular brand of comedy, then it is quite likely you will wonder how this man has been in show business for ninety years.
