Career Bridges was signed by Chelsea having been spotted whilst playing for Norwich and Norfolk Boys. He made his debut for the club against West Ham United in February 1959, and scored in a 3-2 victory. He first established himself in the Chelsea side during the 1961-62 season, and though the club were relegated , he nevertheless proved himself a prolific goalscorer as he found the net 20 times that season. A prolific and versatile forward who could play in the centre or on the wing, Bridges was an important part of manager Tommy Docherty 's re-structured Chelsea attack, alongside Bobby Tambling and Terry Venables . He helped the club gain promotion back to the First Division at the first attempt, and then challenge for the major honours. His most successful season with the club was in 1964-65, in which he scored 27 goals in 42 matches, as Chelsea won the League Cup but faltered late-on in their championship and FA Cup challenges. It was during that season that Bridges, along with several other players, was punished by Docherty for breaking a curfew , after which the manager's relationship with his players deteriorated. Following one more season with Chelsea, Bridges was sold to Second Division side Birmingham City in May 1966 for a club-record £ 55,000. He continued his impressive scoring record at St Andrews , netting 47 times in just over 100 games, and helped the side reach the League Cup semi-finals in 1967 and the FA Cup semi-finals a year later. Start them on Blackford Oakes when they're young.
I tend to not appreciate fiction.I read a lot of brain candy as a child, but one day in my early teens I picked up this book.

1) I met William F. Buckley, Jr.
2) I saw revolutionaries from a different angle.
3) I developed a desire to read books with substance.
4) I was innoculated against Steinbeck.

It's engaging fiction that young people can enjoy.Let them get a little bit of this perspective before their pinko profs get them.

Che As the Monster He Truly Was
A splendid tale. Buckley relied on information about Che provided by Richard Goodwin (husband of Doris Kerns Goodwin). Goodwin was a JFK staff guy who met Guevara at a conference in ..Mexico? I cant recall. The chat between Guevara and Blackie are priceless. I especially liked the background info on Cecilio Velasco, who had been a Spanish communist in the 30s but left after disillusionment with Stalinism.
The final meeting between Che and Blackford in 1967 (when Che has been captured by the Bolivians and Blackie could have interceded to save Che from eventual execution) is quite poignant. Blackie hears the two shots fired to execute the Commandante at the novel's end. Guevara in death has been mythologized and rendered into little more than a pop idol. Kids today who were images of El Che dont know and may never learn about this Caribbean Himmler or all the executions he personally conducted. The sadistic Che in "The Lost City" is in stark contrast to the Che seen in "The Motorcycle Diaries"

After you read this I'd say go watch the wonderful film "The Lost City" starring Andy Garcia. Then go read Carlos Eire's splendid memoir "Waiting for Snow in Havana". In Waiting you get a child's perspective of the Cuban revo. Eire was part of the "Operation Pedro Pan" exodus from Cuba and was inspired to write his book when he watched the USA hand Elian back to his father and Fidel.




Bill Buckley died just prior to the 2008 election.
That is a pity. Unlike Kim IL-sung in North Korea, Bill didnt prepare young Christopher to take the reigns. I had hoped that perhaps Blackie would be continued by Christopher. Surely a meeting between Bin Laden and our Mr Oakes would be memorable.

Best of class - Blackford Oakes in Havana
This is the first of Buckley's books that I have read and it was a real treat.This book is so good in a variety of ways that I think it deserves five stars. It is a combination of good story-telling, historicalinformation, compelling characters (including those taken from real life),clear writing, and intrigue.These elements are combined smoothly into avery entertaining and easy to read tale.The book starts with the thoughtsof President Kennedy and ends with Johnson in the Oval Office.The storyprovides a fascinating glimpse of Cuba in the 1960's, starring Castro andGuevara.There is plenty of suspense to keep the pages turning, but thepace and tone are very even - not a run of peaks and valleys.Even thededication and acknowledgements were interesting.It was fun!

Great what-if scenario
Buckley's Blackford Oakes novels seem to remain one of the best-kept secrets around.For the record: These novels are all based on historic events, but, unless Mr. Buckley has even more of an inside track than I believe he does, they weave a wonderfully complex--and witty!-- web of circustances surrounding them.In this novel, we get a two-fer: the Cuban missile crisis *and* the assassination of JFK.Didn't know that they were linked?Read the book to see how they (maybe) were.[This one ought to be included under the Cuban missile crisis heading.] ... Disapointed.
I was mostly disapointed with this book , I have been a long time player of DC heroes, this system does nothing to improve on the game, Some of the power descriptions are missing and I think the art is disapointing with nodefinition and most drawing seem to be nothing more than sketches.

Buy this book!
This game is as elegant a system you will find in the roleplayinguniverse. You can make just about any character you want. Great, great,great.

Great Role-Playing Game, Unfortunate Printer
As a long-time player of DC Heroes RPG, the Blood of Heroes is just what Iwant to see.It's a revision of the DC Heroes system.Well, more like areprinting with the lack of anything DC in it (with the exception of a fewnames that weren't taken out, *OBVIOUSLY* accidentally).

The newcharacters they do add in are many and colorful.The art is pretty good(except for that Anarchy Man guy).There isn't much changed from theoriginal.One word of warning, the tables are polarized by the printer(not Pulsar Game's fault).Their printer blackened all the tables. Photocopy them, they come out fine, but they are a tough read.I thinkthey will be coming out with a second printing.Check out their website or the DC Heroes FAQ.

It's about time we see MEGS again.
After a few years out of print, the rules system from the DC Heroes RPG byMayfair Games is now back in print...well it's about time.Pulsarhandles the game well and their supers universe is pretty good to boot. Thebook has some new powers as well as new genre rules for playing villainsand anti-heroes.All in all a well rounded book.

The game system itselfis very easy to master _and_ fun to play, but it's not so simple as to turnoff veteran gamers.This book will make a lot of gamers happy. ... Read more
