Morgenroth Thrills with Kill Me First
This book hooked me from the very beginning. There are quite a few unexpected twists and turns that keep you reading to find out what's going to happen next.The graphic details both horrify and delight the reader.This is a well-written thriller/suspense novel and I look forward to reading more books by this author.

"Kill Me First": A Marvelous Read
Sarah Shepherd, the novel's protagonist, is really a window onto the limits of human behavior.The novel, "Kill Me First", explores those limits.How would anyone react when, psychologically, we are pushed to our limits.Who is to say of what we're capable.Do we really know ourselves?Do we really know anyone?This marvelous book, by Kate Morgenroth, explores that theme and those limits.

The book is a terrific read because the story is so compelling and darn interesting.The novel introduces a remarkable character in Sarah Shepherd and keeps you focused on the violence of the many arresting scenes.It also provides an intelligent look at the cat and mouse game between Merec (terrorist) and FBI agent Tressler.While the book is action-packed and worth a read all by itself, it is the psychological dimension that is fascinating.This book and this author cause one to stop and think about oneself and the world.The psychological drama of human beings under intense pressure and Kate's depiction of these pressures is simply first rate.

This is a top drawer psychological thriller.It's an exploration of human behavior, at the limit.I recommend it to anyone who wants a great read and is unafraid to confront the best and worst in all of us.

excellent, unexpected anduntempted by cliches
this was a truly spectacular book, I am amazed to see it in mass market paperback and now out of print.This is certainly not a typical mass produced fun but forgetable thriller...It is absolutly careful and tight in every detail, Kate Morgenroth shows amazing control- complete intellectual genius free from the temptations of cliche and laziness, or any sort of moral indulgance.This is simply amazing.

A WOW of a read!
This is the type of book that grabs you and takes you for a heckofa ride! A young widow who gives up on life and puts herself in a senior citizens home - The bad guys come in to cause some terror, and she says "Kill me first" -
The characters are vivid and the climax of the book leaves you breathless!
One of the must reads for suspense/thriller fans!

Unusual, powerful, somewhat flawed
I agreed with many of the other reviewers, both positive and negative.This is an unusual book, and it is hard to tell if some of its characteristics are flaws or good aspects, such as the author's tendency to provide almost no description of places or characters.
In general, it is powerful and in many ways quite well written.
I do agree that there are some plausibility problems.The worst involve the CIA.The CIA is forbidden by law to operate in the United States.Now, obviously there are some gray areas here.(I was always annoyed when I went to scientific conferences and saw people who I knew worked for the CIA with badges that would say, "John Smith, Department of Defense".I thought they shoulnl'dt misrepresent themselves this way.On the other hand, its not hard to figure out who they are.)But no agent shows his CIA credentials to the local cops and expects to get anything.The local cops know the law.They're likely to call up the FBI and report them.Similarly, nobody with a federal ID goes to CIA headquarters and is allowed to roam the halls causually looking for someone.I've been to CIA headquarters, in the company of federal employees, some with very high security clearances, and we were very carefully escorted to where we had to go.Aside from being generally paranoid, the CIA is very suspicious of other government agencies--I've been in meetings with CIA and NSA people, and they fight like cats and dogs. ... Interesting read but not factually accurate
Once again Larry McMurtry spins a tale of the Wild West.The characters in Buffalo Girls are well-illustrated, with interesting character sketches about their appearances, thoughts, foibles, and quirks.The story is poignant, describing the adventures of a rag-tag bunch of the last of dying breed:those who settled the West.There is a sense of sadness about this book, which reflects the characters' own melancholy.I felt that McMurtry used his creative license well, especially in the "letters to Jane" approach, but towards the end of the story the historical bent is completely off-track.While much of Calamity's life is lost to history, it is known that she married and did have a daughter.This is completely ignored in the book.I will give him credit, though--McMurty knows how to end a story!Worthy of your time and consideration, especially if it leads you to read the excellent Lonesome Dove.

Poor Condition
This book was described as being in "good condition". That wasn't the case when I received it. I'd say it was in poor condition as the book was coming apart at the spine.

One of my favourite books, and my favourite LM novel. No matter how often I revisit it, it always gets a tear.

A Wonderful Journey With Legends Of The West
This review refers to the Audio Cassette Book (Unabridged,Simon and Schuster)Edition of "Buffalo Girls" by Larry McMurtry and read by Betty Buckley. Reviews are mixed together. This audio book has the ISBN of :0671727818.

I found "Buffalo Girls" to be a most enjoyable listen. Although it wasn't exactly what I was expecting, I loved the characters and hated to leave them when the book was finished. I liked it enough though, that somewhere down the line, I will listen to it again.

This novel interweaves famous historical figures, places and events with stories of great friendships and life at a time when the Wild West was becoming a bit more civilized. Calamity Jane, more subdued in her mid-life years, writes letters to her daughter Jane about her colorful life, pals and travels. Her friend Dora DuFran runs a brothel, but always has a room ready and waiting for her beloved Calamity. Their friendship is long and true. They consider themselves, probably the last of the "Buffalo Girls". Calamity also reminisces of her love for Wild Bill(dead for sometime now), adventures with traveling buddies, Jim Ragg (who's love for hunting beaver is his main focus on life),Bartle Bone and "No Ears" an old Indian with great foresight. Now all in their older years(and Calamity on a long drinking binge), they join up with Buffalo Bill Cody, Annie Oakley and Sitting Bull, and head to England on a great ship to perform in Cody's Wild West Show, the last great adventure of their lives.

I have always enjoyed stories of the Wild West and the legends that lived it. Calamity has been one of my favorites, and there have been so many different interpertations of this woman who defied the expectations of womanhood in the 19th century. Most recently I have come to love the Calamity on "Deadwood", and have a feeling, that that Jane comes closest to the real deal. If you have seen it , you know she is not exactly glorified. So when I first started listening to Betty Buckley, she seemed too feminine and too sweet to be Jane. I also was expecting a more adventurous storline. But I have to say, considering the fact the this Jane is older, maybe a litttle tired, and more reflective of life, that Miss Buckley was an excellent choice. And the storyline as well was one more of the love between these friends, and the strong bonds developed over the years.There are also some great touches of humor sure to bring a smile. As other have said, the ending is totally unexpected, but this is afterall a novel, and you wouldn't want it to be totally predictable.

There are 8 cassettes with a total running time of 12 hours to get completely involved with the characters and McMurtry takes you on a wonderfully descriptive trip back in time. The quality and sound is excellent, and I loved the Western folk songs and the lonesome cowboy harmonica playing at the end of each side.

So I would say if you are looking for an action-adventure packed type of Western, you should probably pass this one by. But if you love tales of these legendary, bigger then life figures, and want a new take on them, this book is perfect.

This is NOT a spoiler review
Unlike a lot of people I have no desire to write a review for this book like I work for the San Francisco chronicle. This book was listed as a classic.. so I decided to buy it. The writing was good and the story line believable... A nice read but not as much as a "thriller" as I had hoped.. Still worth buying.... to me at least.

A Starnger is Watching
Mary Higgins Clark Is a Phenomenal writer. A real page turner novel. Can't put her books down till your finished them

Old but enjoyable
Reading this book I was struck by how dated it was.Although the book I was reading appeared new the copyright was 1977.

Despite being dated, it is still an enjoyable read.I read the last half in about two days as I didn't want to wait to see what happened next.I fought sleep the last night to finally finish the book at midnight.This is a typical Mary Higgins Clark but does not seam cookie cutter so you won't feel like you have read this already.Some of the characters (the police) I found a little irritating and hopefully not true to life.Maybe I'm too used to the police being the heros in suspense novels.

Overall this is an enjoyable book weaving together a couple different story lines.

She keeps you guessing
Classic MHC. A teenager wrongly convicted of a woman's murder, waiting on death row for his execution in a few days. A grieving widower and son, seeking closure and healing. A psychotic killer who has never been traced to five unsolved murders. Well-written, entertaining, nail-biting.

The novel opens as Steve and Shawn debate capital punishment.A young man named Ronald Thompson has been sentenced to death for Nina's murder. Throughout the novel they give clues on who could be the killer. At the end of the novel the last person you would think was accused of the murder. The main character was Ronald. I personally liked the novel because I like suspense novels and movies. I would recommend this book to anyone because it is so dramatic and detailed. Also it's full of thrill.

Just ok...contains spoilers....
First of all, this book was way too long and filled with repetitive details.Second, I had a real problem with the author coming off as if Tom Allanson had absolutely nothing to feel badly about in reference to the murder of his parents.I just feel like some details about that day in the basement were sort of rushed past.

In terms of Pat, what a disgusting, pathetic person.The very thought that she was released from prison TWICE is horrific to me.

This was a compelling case, but definitely not Ann Rule's best written work.

best ever!!
Thought this was the best Ann Rule book!Too bad everyone else gave much about the book away!So many lifes were ruin in this book! It's a must read book!Warning-once you start reading this book,you won't be able to put it down!Never had I had a True Crime book that made me feel sick,shaking my head,gave me the chills.This one did and I read mostly true crime books.If you could only buy one Ann Rule books-make it this one!I would love to see this as a movie!You won't believe it-just when you thought you read it all.I plan on getting this on cd for my husband.He isn't into reading.He can listen to it while he tends to his yarn work and other projects.So much happens in the book,I could not tell anyone everything.Don't let the little romance put you off.It doesn't stay that way.If it did-I wouldn't read it.

This Book Is Chilling
Ann Rule does it again!Another great compelling read.What a piece of work Pat is.She is a perfect example of another narcissistic sociopath but this time, it is an attractive brunette with alot of charm.Pat knew exactly what to do to get everything she ever wanted.Pat's problem was, once she got it, she really didn't want it anymore.

This woman has no conscience whatsoever, not even a smidget.For how this woman uses her good looks, sweet voice & fake caring demeanor to do such evil, it would have served her quite right to have been born butt ugly.Pat's life would have been so different & probably nobody would ever have been murdered.

Pat didn't seem to have any problem murdering relatives that genuinely loved her.And for all intents and purposes, it appeared Pat loved them too in a kind & loving manner.But don't let looks fool you.Something so sinister & evil lives within this woman it is chilling.She uses & disposes of people like toilet paper.It was a great read but I developed a strong dislike for this character.

She sets-up her adoring & handsome husband to go to prison for the rest of his life for murdering his parents, when it was she that murdered them.He gets sent to prison & she then murders his grandmother in a horrific way & attempts to murder the grandfather.What a woman! Every evil man in the world needs this Southern bell as a wife!Her & Jeffy MacDonald would make a great pair.Pat even tries to poison her own daughter for profit, so her & Jeffy would go hand in hand marvelously.Jeff MacDonald murdered his young wife, 2 little girls & his unborn son in 1970.

Pat does get sent to prison thank God, had me wondering there for awhile.That was the best part for me was when she starting getting caught.This woman is a true sheep in wolf's clothing & has such a cleverness of making people think she truly cares & loves them.When in all actuality, those dollar sign eyes of hers are plotting their demise.She has to be one of the most callous & unfeeling female sociopath I've ever read about.How she got out of the death penalty I'll never understand or how she didn't even get a life sentence without parole is a travesty of injustice.The world would be a much safer place without that twisted woman in it.She is what the term "a spawn of Satan" really means.

The book is an amazing read, suspenseful & well written just like all of Ann Rule's books.I enjoyed the book even though the main character disgusted me.Ann Rule is one of my favorite authors & I've read everything she has ever published & I always will.Ann - thank you for all the joy your books have given me!I give you a standing ovation!

A true Southern Gothic horror story
Ann Rule's books in my opinion range from very good to awful, but this is one of the better ones.The murderous Pat is truly a piece of work and commits so many outrageous acts, both criminal and just plain emotional, that she seems like something dreamed up by the writers of a TV soap opera rather than a real person.Unfortunately her family seem to be consummate enablers and for whatever reason constantly take her side, even against other family members.There are also a lot of other interesting characters in the book, such as Pat's long-suffering husband Tom who is so desperate for love that he rushes into multiple failed marriages before he meets Pat and then ends up framed and in prison as a result.Fortunately Tom achieves a happy ending; many other people associated with Pat apparently do not.It's definitely a page turner and your mind will boggle that all this really happened and wasn't just some fictional potboiler creation.

However, I only gave this book four stars instead of five because the writing style does tend to get on one's nerves.At times you feel like the author may be exaggerating aspects of the plot such as Pat's beauty (she's reasonably good looking, but hardly Miss America) and Pat's evilness (it seems clear she's mentally ill and needs to be locked up in the home for the criminally insane before she does any more damage, but she's not a very good criminal mastermind as she leaves clues all over the place).I prefer it when true crime writers just show me what happened and let me draw my own conclusions rather than constantly painting characters with superlatives.

GREAT story--poor writing
This book is a real page-turner, and I am unable to put it down. The only distraction is how poor the actual writing is. Though it is not a difficult read, the author tends to tell us what is happening instead of showing us, breaking the number one rule of writing. And she throws in the occasional big word here and there, which stands out like a sore thumb within very low-to average level writing. But, the stories are extremely well-researched. She is quite thorough in her fact-gathering and interviews. And her chronicles, though they could be better written, are incredible! Literally, it is hard to believe that these things have really happened. This book in particular is a fascinating story about a woman who cannot take no for an answer and was a spoiled rotten child who was never given a negative consequence. The result? In my opinion, they created a thriving personality disorder in her by rewarding their child for her constant bad behavior. Hilarious
Only buy if you want to own it, which I did because it is a fun read. If you are just looking to read it, I recommend getting it from your local library because it doesn't take that long to read. Twain is brilliant in his protrayal of women as ignorant to men's feelings but disturbed when they don't get any attention. Definitely a laugh out loud kind of book.

Adam and Eve at last the Truth
If you are not familiar with Mark Twain then some of his humour may be lost on you. This is the quintessence of Twain's humour, strong and gentle, reflective and musing on the human condition and those commonest of misunderstandings that occur between the genders.
When I first heard of this work it was read, one diary at a time, as they had been released for print. Here the two diaries are woven together.
I am not sure I enjoy that so much but I do recommend this to you for a nostalgic and wistful relfection on human relationships in this time when only cynicism seems to reign between the sexes.

A Love Story
This month our book club discussed Mark Twain's The Diaries of Adam and Eve, and even though Twain's account was amusing and speculative, it did give me a lot to think about. I can't imagine how it must have felt to awaken as a fully formed adult with no one around to socialize her or to impart even the tiniest bit of information or advice...except for Adam, that is.

How did Adam really feel about her and vice versa? Was he disturbed to have this creature with the long hair intrude on his personal space? How did they react to being banished from the Garden of Eden? What did Eve do all day? What did she think about? Did Adam scare her, or did she love him in the way that Twain said she did?All of those questions and more are answered in this delightful little book. It was funny, sad, and sort of bittersweet all at the same time.

I thoroughly enjoyed the way the love story developed and love the last passage in Adam's diary: "Wheresoever she was, there was Eden."
