Standing Against Dragons examines the careers of three exceptional lawyers who championed civil liberties and fought for civil rights in the two decades after World War II. John Coe of Pensacola, Florida, Clifford Durr of Montgomery, Alabama, and Benjamin Smith of New Orleans became southern dissenters, resisting both the excessive zeal of the anti-Communist right and the oppression embodied in southern segregation laws. Although they all were sons of southern gentry and were educated in the region's conservative tradition, they identified in the postwar years with both the left-liberal National Lawyers Guild and the Southern Conference Education Fund. Coe, Durr, and Smith all appeared with their clients in the much-publicized 1954 investigation of the Southern Conference Educational Fund and defended persons subpoenaed by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). Coe represented the ardent integrationist who was the last man indicted for contempt by HUAC, and Smith's offices were raided in 1963 as a result of his civil rights work in Mississippi. Sarah Hart Brown's analysis reveals the wide range of southern political ideas and defines the positions of southern liberals and radicals in the broader stream of American liberalism during the postwar period. ... From unpromising beginnings as a small fishing port with only one church, Liverpool grew to be a city of churches and chapels. Neither summery nor magical
Okay, first off, I have to admit that I feel PARTICULARLY mean to be dissing a book that was produced to raise funds for charity. But since this book seems to no longer be in print, and buying it second hand wouldn't generate any funds for charity anyway, then that takes a bit of the guilt away. So here goes.

This book's title is kind of misleading. I thought it would be full of delightfully light and fun tales involving magic, a perfect beach read for a summer vacation. WRONG! This was basically a set of very mundane, non-magical tales full of domestic dullness, mostly set in homes and dreary workplaces, and often involving marital situations and/or kids. Even the foreword by J. K. Rowling (which goes for less than two pages) completely lacks any magic or life. Harry Potter fans - do not bother buying this to add to your collections! Likewise, any fans of stories about magic.

The quality of the stories was substandard, in my opinion. I got the feeling that the authors may simply have submitted old stories that they had sitting round in desk drawers, ones that weren't good enough to sell or put in their own anthologies. After all, this was for charity, so they probably didn't want to waste their A material on something that wouldn't make them money. Then again, maybe part of the problem was with the editors - maybe they chose a poor topic, and told all the authors they had to stick to it. I don't know. All I know is, I was NOT spellbound by the book, although the cover promised me I would be.

Altogether a very disappointing mix of tales from a bunch of authors, some of whom are very high-calibre, who I know can do better.

After reading this, I was starved for something that really did have magic in it, and went off and read 'Abarat' by Clive Barker. Now THAT is a good book that I'd thoroughly recommend if you want to put some magic in your life! ... Read more
