5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, though more text than I wanted
I was very pleased by the large number of high-quality reproductions. Still, as far as I'm concerned there should have been *more*. The book contains (a rough count) about 280 pages containing text or mostly text, out of about 630 total pages. However, I'm very happy with the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent well presented book
The problem with art books is that they go out of print too quickly. This is a beautifully presented book on Rauschenberg that was released with the big retrospective at the Guggenheim in 97/98.Barnes and Noble still hadcopies avaiable as of Sept. 99, so check there -- they were evendiscounted!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very comprehensive overview of Rauschenberg's work
For the fan and the collector, this book is an excellent reference guide that offers extensive illustrations of the works themselves, as well as documentary photos of the artist at work and play.A chronology, exhibition and performance histories are also included. I was also veryinterested in the information regarding Rauschenberg's work processes andcollaborations with other artists. This is a fine addition to any artlibrary.

This book was offered in paperback during a recent exhibition atthe San Francisco MOMA, so if you can find the hard cover you should buyit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rauschenberg, the book
The book is beautiful, if very heavy. The fault lies not with the catalog but with the show itself. THERE'S TOO MUCH STUFF and not all of it is worth looking at. The book will prove to be an invaluable companion to the catalog from the National Gallery of Art's 1976 retrospective. But it (and the show) sure could have used some editing. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars General overview
Written during the early 1970's, Robert McAfee Brown attempts to understand structural violence and religion's role to combat such injustice.Writing to white Americans, Brown, also white, believes this population is responsible for much of the violence in the world. The author hopes to sensitize his audience to the real and hidden violence in both American and Third-World societies in order to combat complacency and establish justice.

Brown begins by clarifying and defining terms.Within the twentieth century, the usefulness and appropriateness of the word `religion' was disputed by theologians.Brown finds usefulness in this word and defines religion as "making a lasting commitment, choosing between a number of possible ultimate loyalties in a way that affects all that we are and do," (5).He suggests that traditional definitions of violence have been too restricted to physical destruction and defines violence as a "violation of personhood."With this definition, there are four ways in which violence can manifest itself: a personal overt physical assault, an institutionalized overt physical assault, personal covert violence, and institutionalized covert violence.Brown chooses to focus on the last manifestation discussing the others briefly.Indebted to Dom Helder Camara, Brown believes that violence begins with social injustice. When injustice becomes too oppressive revolt occurs, and injustice and revolt then lead to further repression. These three stages flow from each other producing a downward spiral of violence.

In order to detect violence in its most subtle forms, Brown explores the most blatant form of violence: warfare. The relationship between religion and violence can be understood by investigating the various attitudes towards warfare. The Old and New Testaments contain passages that endorse and justify warfare, and historically, Christian attitudes towards warfare have moved from pacifism to just war to holy war.Brown examines the criteria for a just war and then applies the criteria to the Vietnam War, ultimately concluding its injustice. To offer a balanced perspective on the just war theory, Brown critiques its limitations, and theorizes that, with the possibility of nuclear warfare, pacifism is the most realistic attitude towards warfare.

Turning from the most obvious example of violence, Brown next examines the reality of violence in our society. He does this through four interconnected propositions.First, because of the economic disparity between rich and poor, we live in a revolutionary situation. Those without power are unwilling to accept inequity and will not tolerate this deprivation indefinitely.Second, people can respond to this power inequity either violently or nonviolently.Violence and nonviolence then are means of response to unjust power distribution.Third, structural violence - when the structures of society itself both cause and perpetuate the violation of personhood - is at the very heart of the problem of suffering.Fourth and last, those structures that benefit our society, particularly white Americans, are generally the ones that work violence against the rest of the world. Those who enjoy the benefit of social structures are implicated in the violation of personhood of others in the world. These beneficiaries must be held accountable.

Next Brown examines the situation in the "third world," to see how their voices can contribute to a discussion on religion and violence.White Americans are involved in the misery and oppression that occurs in third world nations, and for this reason we must pay attention to their situation. In 1968, the Latin American Episcopate held a conference in Medellin, Columbia, in which the Catholic Church switched allegiance from the rich landowners to the poor and oppressed. This conference concluded that there can only be peace in Latin American countries if structures of society are truly dedicated to justice and consciously root out any forms of structural violence.Colonialism, a pervasive example of structural violence, has held Latin America in captivity to this point.Internal colonialism, power held by a tiny group of people within the nation, mixed with external neocolonialism, political and economic power held by an outside nation, combine to produce a powerful form of structural violence - of which American interests are clearly implicated.Brown offers two examples of how Latin American church leaders respond to this violence, representing the range of options available for combating unjust social structures.

Brown recognizes the uncomfortable implications of his argument, and he seeks to further investigate these implications. He concludes that a just revolution is possible, distinguishing violence that oppresses from violence that liberates.Using the criteria for a just war, Brown provides criteria that make possible a just revolution. He cautions, however, that the means to combat violent social structures in one situation are not necessarily appropriate for combating structures in other situations and circumstances. At the same time, Americans should not too quickly extrapolate lessons from South America and apply these lessons to our context. Examining structural violence at global and national levels, Brown explores options for creating social change.By viewing other countries as "developing nations," Americans effectively reinforce systems of inequity and keeps them in a dependency role. For this reason, a shift from a theology of development to a theology of liberation must take place.Brown also believes the best ways to handle structural violence abroad is to change systemic violence here in America, and he asserts there are four options in which create the possibility for change.Change can be created, first, by using the existing structures.Second, systemic change can occur through nonviolent means.Third, new structures can be created to replace unjust structures.Fourth, a violent struggle can be used to overthrow the system. He suggests, however, that "selective conscientious objection" is the best alternative to violence, one that believes in nonviolent means but allows for violent responses in extreme circumstances.

Finally, Brown discusses the ways in which a religious community can help alleviate structural violence.Accordingly, the terms we use to describe ourselves must be broadened to include our religious identity in order to be inclusive of other people. We must identify with others, and defining ourselves as Jewish, Christian, or Muslim gives us a place to stand to critique and change unjust structures. This identity acknowledges the equality of all in God's creation and elicits a higher loyalty than loyalty to nation, class, or race. Our sacred texts illuminate God's impartiality: God is a God who takes sides with the oppressed. The religious community should not be agents of conflict but agents of reconciliation and must recognize and teach that power is available through the grace of God.Finally, white churches should employ revolutionary nonviolent love in changing unjust structures, a strategy different than other churches. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Music!
JRB is one of my heroes! He did an awesome job adapting the story of Leo Frank to music quite fitting of the South while adding his usual Jewish tinge to it.I love 'All the Wasted Time'- one of the best musical theatre duets in the past 50 years, as well as 'This is Not Over Yet'- a tour de force piece of work.Pretty much everything in this book is wonderful. It will definitely take either an extremely talented classical pianist and/or a strong reader in chords and feel for the songs to play a lot of these accompaniment parts, but they are some of the most enjoyable songs to play.My only reason I am giving the songbook 4 stars is because it doesn't have 'There is A Fount/God This Don't Make Sense' in here.I figured out most of it by ear with the cd, but still it would have been nice to have included this heartfelt eulogy to Mary Phagan in here.Oh well, I guess you can't get them all.Buy this book and enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Musical
This musical is nearly flawless.I have analyzed this show to great detail and I find it near-perfect.I love Jason Robert Brown (lyrics and music) - he's incredibly talented. As for Harold Prince, the director, he is a the winner of several Tony's, and Alfred Uhrly is just amazing as always, winning awards in several media categories.I recommend this musical to anyone who wants to be challenged musically and moved emotionally. This musical pushes the theatre up to new levels of excellence, which should be every composer's/director's goal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing score, difficult vocal score
Parade is one of the most auspicious debuts by a theatre composer in recent memory.Jason Robert Brown, then in his mid-20s, joined legendary 20-time Tony-winning producer-director Harold Prince and Tony-, Pulitzer- and Oscar-winning playwright Alfred Uhry for a musical about a Jewish man living in Atlanta in 1915 who was wrongly convicted of the murder of a young girl. The result was a critical success and one of the finest theatre scores I've ever heard.I anxiously awaited the release of this score so that I could play the songs and sing the moving melodies at home. The only problem is that Brown is such a talented "rock pianist" (think Jerry Lee Lewis meets Sondheim)that his piano parts are almost unplayable by amateurs such as myself. My advice: buy this book, and get someone very talented to play it for you. ... Customer Reviews (6)

5-0 out of 5 stars My review is based solely on the 1964 original
A friend tendered Rex Roberts' book to me in the mid-1970s as I began to consider building a passive solar house. What Mr. Roberts taught me carried me through to the completion of a successful building project in Charleston, SC facing the Intracoastal Waterway, just off Folly Road, Nr. One Tranquil Drive. The house worked for both cooling and heating. It still does although later owners have taken out the Vermont Castings woodstove and installed central AC. Designed as an envelope house by San Francisco architect, Lee Porter Butler, I contracted the house myself with the help of a master builder, Jim Bowring.During construction I followed the roofing advice of a retired engineer who during the Second World War designed passive solar housing for the military, both in Antarctica and in the tropics.I followed Roberts' siting instructions dutifully in selecting a lot.I want to comment on the aluminum foil, apparently derided in the book's revision. The most successful part of the house's passive cooling came from the vented skin, mill finished aluminum roof with insulation inside the house backed with aluminum foil.During the six years I lived in the house, the highest temperature reached 105 degrees F one July afternoon, yet the upper part of the solarium, the envelope never topped 90 with the sun beating down.In fact, the whole 2000 sq. ft. house stayed cool and dehumidified using just one 1800 BTU window AC unit. Why?Aluminum has a low emissivity for (blocks) radiant heat.
Rex Roberts' aesthetic details might be a bit rough for some, but his engineering principles are as sure as the Rock of Gibraltar.George David Exoo, Unitarian Minister, Beckley, WV

5-0 out of 5 stars Rex Roberts' Your Engineered House
This is a timeless classic for anyone designing/building a home. Some items (like "new" materials available) are dated. But the thrust of the book, the concepts discussed, work in any home design since mankind climbed out of the cave and picked a tree to live in.And will work on the moon or any planet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Update
It is wonderful to update a book, from the past, that has so many good ideas for creating "off-the-grid" design. Wonderful job on the sequel to a fine publication.

4-0 out of 5 stars A needed update well done
Other opinions notwithstanding, Charlie Wing has done a much needed update on a classic, innovative reconsideration of housebuilding. Wing had the benefit of 20 years of hindsight on what worked and what did not work among Rex Roberts many sugggestions for fundamentally changing the basic American house. Wing, educated in physics and experienced in the building trades, helped found an owner-builder school prompted by Mr. Roberts' original book. His buildings and Mr. Roberts are the basis for his update. The tin-foil insulation is not mentioned because it was a disaster -- it did not insulate but it did cause condensate and rotting, even on Mr. Roberts own house. Enough said. If you insist on reading the original, take no action based on it until you determine whether it's included in Mr. Wing's update. Otherwise, enjoyable and thoughtful reading all round. I've built a house based on these principles and thoroughly enjoyed it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Revised but not better
The book, "Rex Robert's Your Engineered House-Revised, Updated, and Edited by Charlie Wing" is out of print for probably a good reason.Charlie Wing's "revision and updating" detracts from and degrades the original classic. It attempts to update with information on new techniques & materials and corrupts the original intent of Mr. Robert's book. And that is the crux of the matter-Mr. Wing either doesn't agree with Mr. Robert's original book idea or with Rex Robert's vision.

Rex Robert's philosophy on house building was keep it simple, well thought out, livable, enjoyable, durable and economical. He recognized some Building Codes, custom, fashion, and prejudice (not to mention ignorance) can make building ones own home a needlessly expensive proposition.Rex Robert's was an engineer and consequently his reasons for doing things the way he did was logical from an engineeringperspective not to mention seasoned with Mr. Robert's many other talents and accomplishments.

Mr. Wing updates some materials and costs but his editing and updating also takes the form of deleting some of the most important parts and ignoring others. For example the tin foil Rex Robert's used for a radiant barrier he totally deleted.Construction techniques and the progression of construction stages used in the original where also deleted such as how and why Mr. Robert's built a foundation, roof, floor, and walls and in that order. He deleted Mr. Robert's explanation of dew point/ condensation and then has an illustration of a building technique that could lead to condensation problems. And there are other examples of things substituted or left out.

The original was a book, I believe, that was designed to get you to think. To question convention yes, but not dismiss convention just to dismiss it but to see if convention was serving or being served. Not intended to be the last word on construction techniques or styles it was intended to delve into the basic function of a structure and how people could adopt an economical perspective to what is now considered the single most expensive purchase most people will ever make. The original bookwas a wonderful example of an argument for certain ways of building a house that one would love to live in and doubly so when there was a non-existent mortgage.Rex Robert's rarely mentioned building codes (UBC) and instead concentrated on a building style that answers economy and comfort versus convention.I wonder if Mr. Wing would agree?

There is merit in being true to your vision and there is merit in changing the vision if enlightened by new knowledge. But I think the book Rex Robert's published in 1964 answered his vision much more than the butchered version Charlie Wing published in 1987.The spirit of the original book could have been much better served by being annotated than being revised. Look for the original '64' book from a used book dealer.Forget the newer one. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a simple to use referance book.
This is a technical and clinically written book. Do not expect to easily find a cause or cure from symptoms using this book. It is not what I was hoping for. However if you suspect a condition, this will describe it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poodle Owners Medical Manual
I thought I was never going to get this book of the four I ordered on Poodles but after making a phone call to Amazon, they immediately replaced the book.Someone else must have enjoyed the book as much as I have.It is one of the best books I have ordered on dogs, and especially because it is all geared to the poodle.Thank you for the quick replacement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poodle vet guide
Very helpful, wish it was more up to date. I did not ask published date

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book on poodle health
This is an excellent medical reference book for poodle owners, but it is rather technical and clinical.Information is arranged alphabetically by topic, so it can sometimes be difficult to find what you are looking for if you don't already know the exact, sometimes medical, term. This is by no means a how-to guide for raising and caring for poodles, nor does it purport itself to be such a book.If your veterinarian mentions a specific condition or you hear about something afflicting another breed and wonder if it is something that can affect poodles (e.g., tracheal collapse), there is no better resource than this book.It also does a very good job of contrasting conditions and their effects on poodles of various sizes. When you know the condition, it is easy to learn about the symptoms; if you are observing symptoms in your poodle, though, it is not altogether easy to find what conditions the symptoms might point to.

Thus, as wonderful as this book is, it is not a practical guide for keeping your poodles healthy. For this reason, I do not believe this is a book that all poodles' humans should rush out and buy.A pet first aid book is much more practical and potentially life-saving, and the clinical presentation of the information in this medical manual will probably put off a good many people.Breeders will find this book much more useful than typical poodle owners will.

Book was excellent as I enjoy Dale Brown in 99.9% of his books.Outstanding reading and a good story that could come true in the near future.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Book that Keeps You on the Edge of Your Seat
If you want to read a something that has controversy and action wrapped up into an exciting, fast pace moving plot, then you should read Shadows of Steel by Dale Brown.
This realistic fiction book starts you off in the Persian Gulf aboard a U.S. secret carrier that is attacked and sunk by the Iranian Khomeini carrier group. Some survivors were taken hostage from the ship. The President of the United States, in response, turned to former Air Force Captain Patrick McLanahan.McLanahan - if you've ever read some other Brown books - has saved the day more than once before. An aggressive offensive plan is devised to attack Iran and to prevent another Gulf war from erupting.Targets in the plan are strictly military and industrial only and McLanahan wants to do most of this with non-lethal force.Their weapon is the new B-2 Spirit Stealth bomber that is state of the art.Can McLanahan pull off another successful mission?Check out this book for guaranteed action and suspense.
I would recommend this book to those who are interested in the middle-east and problems over there. Also to those who enjoy suspenseful thrillers with smart action. An example of some of the action from this book that was actually kind of funny was when McLanahan was confronted by the Secret Service and was going to be asked whether he wanted to do the mission or not and McLanahan, not knowing who it was, knocked the guy out with his computer and put him in a tight lock.If you want a read that won't let you down if you're somewhat interested in this stuff, possible even if you're not, then pick this book up now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not so thrilling technothriller
In "Shadows of Steel", It's the "United States Air Force of Patrick McLanahan" v. Iran.Having previously duked it out with Soviets, Red China and a KGB mole, maverick flier McLanahan is tagged to fly stealth missions into Iran. The covert war is spurred by Iran's defacto nationalization of large pieces of the Persian Gulf and their acquisition of an ex-Russian aircraft carrier (betcha can't guess the name).Obviously the Iranians will have none of McLanahan's airborne warfare, but they get help from some allies in America - liberals, bureaucrats and a pissed-off Navy Admiral who's around to remind us that inter-service rivalry is alive and well in the future of Brown's books.

This was a middling novel.Like most of Brown's books, its hampered by its need to get the look, sound and feel of air combat.Unfortunately, we get so much data, there's no room for the story, or even the idea that the book has a plot."Steel" never feels like it's working towards something - instead it's basically a sting of scenes with flight jargon, political back-talk and scheming villains.Even the feeling of being in the pilot's seat is spoiled - our characters engage in the same easygoing dialog that you expect to hear from people schmoozing on the ground but never from people strapped into a high-performance fighter jet flying over enemy territory. The realism is debatable, but its drag on the plot is painfully obvious. Some howlers however aren't so much technical but fall into that realm of he human conscious for which there is no on-line directory. For all pretensions of being a maverick, McLanahan is a textbook hero, while a thinly veiled versions of real-life liberals make this less a technothriller than a high-tech Alan Drury novel.I should have realized something was wrong when Brown created as a love interest, a beautiful Saudi female soldier - this from a country where women aren't aloowed to drive or show their faces.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favourite B-2 is on flight again in this book
Shadows of Steel was my fourth book from Brown's Aeoro techno thriller. This time, the story took me to the mid east...after the B2 had its experiences in South East Asia (Sky Masters). The story is very good and I really enjoyed reading it. But damn! I felt myself sitting as a CO Pilot with Patrick in B-2 again..! Although it's not that heavy thriller written in previous 'Sky Masters', But Brown is still genious with story writting! He is still the best Pilot! So everyone who is in flight enthusiast, don't miss it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dale Brown does it again
Alright,

this was the very first book of Dale Browns' I have read. Now, I have 5, with another 5 on order.

This book is excellent. This one talks about the B-2 Bomber, and modifying it. Although I recomend you read Sky Masters first, you can read this before Sky Masters, like I did. This one has Patrick suiting up on a B-2 and going to fight the Iranians. ... Read more
