Excellent beginning counselor text
This text has great information and good self exploration exercises.Kottler has been writing these texts for many years, and has written a text that is accessible to the beginning counseling student.I cannot recommend using this text highly enough, my students love the book (as evidenced by my NOT seeing it on our bookstore shelves as a used text after the course wraps), and it is organized for both the student and the professor.The only alteration in chapter sequencing that I make is to teach the ethics chapter early in the course rather than late in the course.

Do youself a favor and read this
By the end of this book, I wanted to meet Jeffrey Kottler, have coffee with him, exchange jokes, and ask him all the bigger questions that, as a graduate student, lurk in the back of my brain. You know.Those questions like, "Can I really do this?" and "What happens if I screw up someone's emotional well-being even worse than when they came in?"

This book is great. Informative, sometimes humorous, and written to the grad. student in easy-to-understand language, the author scored a hit with this book.

The sidebars, where new/seasoned counselors offer their opinions, experience, and advice is, by itself, worth the money for the book.Further, each chapter is broken down into logical sub-sections where the author gets "right to it" and doesn't mince words or phrase them as if he's a research scientist hell bent on scaring new students.

Suggested reading lists, at the end of each chapter, are filled with a variety of books, not just didactic volumes.

A nice touch is the author's "personal" chapter to the reader toward the end of the book.In this section, he mentions what they don't tell you in graduate school...how you might lose friendships or even your marriage might change or crack (due to your inevitable emotional growth), how you will never know enough, and how you are going to feel like you are failing in a big way.

Honest, clear, succinct, and friendly.What more could a student want?

Should be required for those entering the field of therapy.

Robert Brown was one of the first professional botanists to visit Australia. He accompanied Flinders on his official circumnavigation of Australia in the ship Investigator, and later collected extensively in New South Wales and Tasmania. The result was published, in part in his Prodromus (1810), and in other shorter works, particularly on Proteaceae.

Brown came to be recognized as the leading British botanist of his day. His extensive herbarium, of which the main set is lodged in the British Natural History Museum, was also extensively consulted by other botanists, and is particularly rich in Australian type material.

While in Australia Brown also made zoological, mineralogical and anthropological collections. Many of these are now lodged in British institutions.

Brown’s Prodromus was published before Flinders’ account of the voyage, and Brown was therefore obliged to use his own manuscript names for localities visited (‘Bay I’ etc.). His specimen labels, too, were somewhat cryptic, containing only minimal information. This has presented later researchers with difficulties in properly localizing the Brown collections.

However, Brown kept a diary during the 5 years of his Australian visit, and this provides additional notes about many of his collections and of the localities visited. The diary is housed in the British Natural History Museum, largely inaccessible to scientists. It has now been transcribed by the late T.G. Vallance, E.W. Groves and D.T. Moore, and the entries extensively annotated and interpreted. Brown used many temporary nicknames for the plants he collected, and these are now tied to currently accepted names. Brown’s diary entries are cross referenced to and supplemented by those of his companions, Matthew Flinders and Peter Good, as well as letters to and from Brown’s patron, Joseph Banks, and others. Illustrations include maps of collecting sites, and paintings by the artist Ferdinand Bauer who accompanied Flinders and Brown on the Investigator voyage.

The book will be invaluable to botanists, zoologists, geologists and anthropologists, both for the background information supplied for the Brown collections, and for his incidental observations on the Australian landscape, its occupants and its biota at a time before extended European settlement. ... The most significant book of my academic career
In the beginning of my junior semester at college I took a class called "The World of Late Antiquity." Originally, my goal was to become a historian of the classical world and I thought I would take this class to learn more about the period after the period I was interested in. The class and particularly the writings of Peter Brown made such an impact on my life that I decided to focus on post-classical studies.
The thing about this book is the intimacy gained through the imagery. The work is replete with images and these drawings make the era and the people of the era come alive. The art is somewhat surreal instead of abstract and at times it seems that you are staring in the face of someone from the ancient world. This is not to suggest that there is no abstract art from this period but rather that the images selected by Brown serve the purpose of endearing the people of this time to the reader.
In terms of content it is obvious that Brown made a groundbreaking claim that Rome never actually fell but was rather transformed into something else. Instead of using the words "decline and fall" he chooses "continuity and transformation" to describe the period. Brown argues the following;

1. The Roman capitol was moved to the east and thus Rome continued to exist long after 476.
2.People of this era still saw themselves as Romans instead of seeing Rome as part of the past. Yet in the midst of this continuity there are changes taking place and new ideas being promoted.
3. The Barbarian invasions were difficult but not as horrific as they have been portrayed. He argues that the Barbarians assimulated Roman culture not the other way around.
4. This was not an era of intellectual difficulty but rather an exciting time where new ideas were growing rapidly.
5. That it was not until the 800's that we see the disappearance of Roman culture and this was due to various pressures such as the rise of Islam which threatened the west and the eastern part of the empire.

Of course, there were some problems that Brown faced which he needed toadress and which he did in his 2003 "Rise of Western christendom." Personally, I feel that his ideas are excellent but the other side of this argument has valid arguments as well. Bryan Ward-Perkins and Phillip Freeman would argue that this was a time ofhorrific economic issues in the west which Brown seems to de-emphasize at times. This widespread economic declineis partly true and partly untrue. Hard economic times do not truly make a dark age and I think that in fact, that Brown's goal was perhaps to remove the "dark age" stigma placed on the ancient people of this era. This was a time of excitement that is unique and beautiful in it's own rite. I found that emperors of this time are more interesting and the people are fascinating. I could not recommend this book enough as I have came back to it almost every semester since as a great reference source.

It is not a very good book.The Author writes almost as if this were a childs book.

It was very difficult to sort out what was his comparison and what was actual fact.

Excellent Introduction to Late Antiquity
Peter Brown has a unique style, like story telling he takes the reader through history making each page a page-turner. He exposes history like no one else. The author, always bringing information that apologist and past historians have tried to hide in the name of Church.

The book is a short introduction to a period in history that many people tend overlook. However, it is a very important period in Western history. It is the pillar of our way of life and the source of many of our core beliefs. Peter Brown brings forth excellent pieces of information like,

Galen noticed that the Christians were apparently enabled by their brutally simple parables and commands to live according to the highest maxims of ancient ethics.The Christian Apologists boasted of just this achievement.

A new half-educated public had turned away from great Platonic dialogues to more simple fare, provided by homespun philosophers such as Epictetus, and by handbooks of Pythagorean maxims.

Beautifully written history that challenges popular assumptions
It is rare that I find a history so readable. I read some and I just want to keep on reading. This book actually proved distracting from class work.
Not only is it written like a delicious bowl of soup, it also presents a new (new for when it was written, any way) temporal framework; the old division of Classical, Dark, and Middle Ages is done away with. Brown shows how while elite culture in Europe changed under the influence of Christianity and northern cultures, the period was not so much marked by a loss knowledge as by a resurgence of provincialism. Furthermore, the focus of political (and to a certain degree cultural) change saw a shift eastward to Mesopotamia, that area long fought over by Romans, Arsacids, Sassanids and Byzantines. The rise of the Sassanids in Persia and the east-west cultural exchange across Mesopotamia and the Levant is given good attention.
The inclusion of the rise of Islam in the context of this Late Antiquity framework gives a breath of fresh air into our understanding of later history. The influence of Persian institutions and culture on the nascent Islamic empire, the bonding of Hellenistic philosophy with Christianity and the resurgence of provincial styles across the [former] Roman Empire shows how continuity underlined-- and perhaps typified-- the the profound changes of the period. The old understanding of the "Dark Ages" should be thrown out. Cultures always change. This book helps elucidate that point.

A good introduction
The world of Late Antiquity is an historical period often overlooked. The more prominent periods such as the Greek Empire, Roman Empire, Early Christendom, Rise of Islam, East/West Split, etc. take the majority of space in historical texts; often the world of Late Antiquity is an epilogue or a prologue to anothe period.

Peter Brown, renowned for his authoritative biography on Augustine of Hippo, has produced a good introductory text to the period between the beginnings of the downfall of the Roman Empire and the beginnings of medieval times in western Europe. This period does not have strict boundaries -- there were no crucial or pivotal events defining the beginning or the end of the period, which is perhaps why it is often overlooked.

The text is divided into two primary sections -- the Late Roman Revolution, and Divergent Legacies. In the Late Roman Revolution, Brown explores the aspects of culture and religion that change slowly but ultimately dramatically from classical Roman to Christian-medieval. As Christianity rises and the power from the centre fades, including the power of the intelligensia, the post-Roman world takes on a new character.

In Divergent Legacies, Brown first looks at the development of the West after the fall of Rome. The barbarian invasions are recast, the assimilation of the Senate into the aristocratic and higher clerical ranks of the ruling Church shown to be a way in which the Roman hierarchy in fact survived the collapse of Rome, and the fragmentation of the empire ensured the dominance of Latin for the next many centuries.

This was a very different character from the survival of the Late Antique world in the East. Here the walls of Byzantium were never breached, despite the fact that most of the empire was lost not once but multiple times. The final chapter in Late Antiquity in the East was the first chapter in Muslim history, with the rise of the Muslim-dominated empires, which at first had cordial and profitable relationships with the West.

This book is part of a series, the Library of World Civilisation, edited by Geoffrey Barraclough of Brandeis University. Each volume is approximately 200 pages, richly illustrated (this particular text has 130 illustrations in these 200 pages), and accessible in writing style.

Well crafted novel
Robert "Buster" Brown has crafted an excellent thriller. The book has everything you could want in a novel - good character development, many twists, turns, and surprises, and outstanding writing. I was intrigued by the story line from beginning to end and had no idea what to expect next. I particularly liked the development of the two main characters and their relationship to one another. Finally, I appreciate the author's attention to his craft. Unlike many books in this genre, the author clearly takes his writing seriously, providing excellent descriptions, realistic (and often funny) dialogue, and fine prose throughout. I'm a novelist myself and I'm normally underwhelmed by the caliber of most novelist's writing ability. Not so here. Brown has done an impressive job and I highly recommend this book if you're looking for a well-written, exciting thriller.

Far right extremists try to take over our government
This terrific story can be related to some of The United States leadership problems from the presidential election of 2008, only sort of in reverse.This story involves the power struggle from the president, through the Supreme Court, the FBI, and several key lawyers, only their powerful cause is to the far right of conservative extremism.When President Thomas Longbridge brought on board some of his choices for those positions, he tapped, knowingly or not, into some extreme evangelists that thought the nation needed turned around by ANY means to an extreme religious right.Seth Harrington was a very close advisor and longtime friend who was a lifelong Christian evangelist and founder and chairman of the CMA, Christians for a Moral America.If Harrington advised the person or policy to fill a need of the evangelist, Longbridge pretty well went along with him on his decisions.

Mayson Angelini Corelli was an attorney with one of the largest law firms, Lieber Allen Attorneys.Gregory Lamp was the managing partner who also became the nominee for the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.Also key members of the firm were Tyler Waddill and Morris Mendelsohn.There are several other key characters in this book and you will meet them as you read.This is a case of superb writing where you have quite a few characters but you do not get lost as scenes change.When Morris Mendelsohn was found in his apartment murdered, the firm was shocked and when the key suspect was one of the firms' members, Mayson Corelli, they had mixed feelings.Some felt that she had killed Mendelsohn while others deliberately pointed a finger at her so they could advance their conspiracy.Besides, Mayson had a family history of organized crime that placed some of her family in prison while some were killed.She could be found guilty of this murder very easily with her background.

When the authorities appeared at the law office, Mayson was interviewed and became a top suspect when the news was spread that she had been seen at the murdered mans apartment very recently.Mayson knew her goose was cooked if she allowed herself to be arrested on a murder that she knew she didn't commit so she fled the office and hid in various places.When one of the other key law firm members, Tyler Waddill, heard of all the so called evidence against Mayson, he found her and took her into his confidence, hiding her as well as he could.Mayson didn't know how much to trust him.She didn't know if he was in a conspiracy to let her be arrested or if he really wanted to help her.

When the authorities closed in on Mayson in a location, Tyler would move her, sometimes in plain sight.Tyler continued to work at the firm explaining various reasons for his missing time occasionally.Eventually the hunt got too close and they had to flee the area, many times taking them into some harsh weather conditions and some extremely difficult hiking and running away, while eluding several law authorities.Meanwhile the extremists continued trying to hide evidence that would point to some of them as they told the nation that they were doing all of this for religious correction in the nation.Even killing innocent people became necessary for some of these religious and righteous leaders (?) without any good law abiding excuse but always showing they were doing the right thing.Mayson knew there was evidence that would prove who the real killers were, if she could find it before she was caught.

Here I will stop so I don't ruin the plots of this tremendous book.It is fast paced and full of surprises.No falling asleep while reading Robert Brown's book.When I saw the size of this book I hoped it would not turn out to be a strung out story with no connections from front to back.Believe me, it wasn't!Robert M. Brown, Jr., please give us another great book to follow this one.I also very much like the paper it was printed on and the easy-to-read print font.

A GREAT POLITICAL THRILLER
From the moment I opened the cover and started reading, I was hooked. The character development was great and the book was just as good as a book written by John Grisham and David Baldacci. I have always loved thrillers especially those that kept me guessing until the end. The author did an excellent job and when the book ended, I was looking for more. Bravo, Mr. Brown for a great Debut novel and I hope that he continues to write in the future. If you like suspense,thrillers and a little romance this is the book for you. So go out and pick up a copy of this great book. You will not be disappointed.

The Longbridge Decision
A few weeks ago when this book arrived I thought that this was just the right book for my husband, so I asked him to read it and review it for a Guest Spot here at Dollycas's Thoughts.So here is his review:

The Longbridge Decision

Very reminiscent of a David Balducci or John Grisham type thriller with the highest levels of the US government being portrayed as corrupted and controlled by the Christian Right with crossover into the world of the law and lawyers. The main characters are Thomas Longbridge, President of the United, his main benefactor Seth Harrington, leader of the CMA (Christians for a Moral America), a group of flunkies from the Attorney General, a justice or two of the supreme court all appointees of President Longbridge who is attempting to turn the United States policy of separation of church and state into something of the past by controlling the Supreme Court in an attempt to override many of the decisions that keep it in place.

The hero and heroine of the story are Tyler Wadill an associate attorney along with Mayson Corelli also an associate at the Lieber Allen Law firm in Washington DC. Tyler comes from a very wealthy family with issues that haunt him in his past while Mayson has some family issues of her own which she would rather not discuss.

When a murder is committed against one of the senior partners at Lieber Allen, one Morris Mendelsohn, and Mayson Corelli is set up as the patsy, Tyler Waddill knows it's not right and comes to the rescue of Mayson and helps her elude the very people who have set her up and want to make sure she hangs for the crime. At the same bury the past skeletons in the closet of the sitting Chief Justice, Associate Justice , and also the next prospective Justice needed to make sure the plans of Seth Harrington come true.

While I did enjoy the book with all of the twists and turns of the chase to find the truth and expose the conspirators I felt the book was a bit too long in length at 530 pages and some of the story lines took too much time to layout. I am a less is more type of reader and while I did enjoy the story feel that the same story could have been completed in a quicker pace and still give us as the reader the same conclusion. Even with this I would still recommend this book as a good way to spend a rainy day because once you start reading you may not want to stop....

One very highly entertaining read

Overcoming the great fallacy . . .
. . .that so-called liberal theologians have nothing worthwhile to say to evangelicals; that sums up, for me, the impact of this book. I first encountered the author, Robt. McAfee Brown, in a book I read with a group discussing social justice.Since that first book I've kept going back to the same well and have found some refreshment and some food for thought and action.Having now read several of Brown's books as well as his autobiography I've come to a deep respect for a man who was more interested in how he lived his life as a follower of Christ than in remaining sequestered as an ivory tower academic.

In this book Brown leads us toward a liberating spirituality, that is, one that recognizes that the world is not as it is meant to be and that God has taken action climaxing in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus to begin to do something about it. The salvation he offers is not an escapist spirituality to a disembodied eternity but one that calls us into a new relationship with both God and our neighbors.Spirituality and liberation as it turns out are simply two sides of the same coin of the Kingdom.And why, I want to ask, has this been so difficult to grasp?

Helpful Introduction to the subject
Robert McAfee Brown's Liberation Theology is a helpful introduction to the subject, one that I think will be of most interest to American readers who immediately oppose LT without knowing a thing about it other than it is somehow connected to Marxist analysis and for that reason suspect.Brown was a theologian, activist, and long time advocate and friend of Liberation Theology and its Latin American advocates.The book is quite readable.Brown writes with considerable wit.Read his "Unexpected News" and "Saying Yes and Saying No" for a reading of scripture that stands in support of LT and for a take on the Christian's relationship to the powers that be.

Well written and convinving book, but I disagree with liberation theology
This book uses great examples as evidence of liberation theology. The author chooses his words carefully and makes strong connections. After I finished this book I felt like I really understood what the theology is, why it's necessary to practice, and how to talk about it. Many books don't leave me feeling as educated as this book does.

However, having a degree in theology and studying it on my own, I do not agree that liberation theology should exist. This book allowed me to really think through my stance, but I feel that the concept of liberation theology assumes too much about God's will and doesn't acknowledge the difference between human will and God's will.

Activism Not Theology
Brown presents a case for living faith through service to the poor, and it is clear, his heart is with the the Latin American roots of liberation theology. He fails, however, to present the theological evidence for the call to active resistance, political engagement, and violence that is the conclusion one must draw from the unbalanced interpretation of Jesus' radicalism. He is so biased in his own appraisal of the gospel message that he fails to fairly present any altermative view.

It can be argued that Jesus did not call for societal activism, but rather individual loving acts, that He did not call for resistance but rightous living, that he did not expect the condition of man to improve ("The poor will always be with us.") but came to save man's soul instead. Indeed, though He promised persecution and even death for His sake, have the persectution and deaths of so many Latin American activists advanced the plight of the poor more than quiet safe water progams and educational assistance of US Catholic Relief Services for instance.Brown's inability to evenly present this proposition, unfairly influences young minds and greatly impairs this works usefluness. To call it a theological treatise is a mockery of real theological inquiry. Brown would have been better off calling it what it is--a collection of stories about the Latin American roots of Liberation Theology and his own "feeling" that this is the call of the Ministry of Jesus.

Great Book!
This is an excellent introduction to Liberation Theology.It may make you uncomfortable, though...especially if you are from a "priveleged" background...I loved it because it spoke to the strange "dicotomy" within me of being a supposed "conservative Christian" with the Spirit of supposed "liberalism" in light of justice issues.

A Mirror to his times
When Robert E. Sherwood died, in 1955, his fame was almost mythical: a Pulitzer Prize-winning dramatist whose ROOSEVELT AND HOPKINS: AN INTIMATE HISTORY won his a fourth Pulitzer Prise; FDR's speechwriter and intimate advisor; Overseas Director of the OWI.We first meet Sherwood in the midst of his gifted, gay and delightful family.Later, after service in the Canadian Black Watch during World War I, he came to New York, worked on VANITY FAIR with Robert Benchley and Dorothy Parker and was a member of the Algonquin's Round Table.He went on to prove himself an outstanding dramatist with REUNION IN VIENNA and ABE LINCOLN IN ILLINOIS, among other plays.

More stories of the Unhurtable Geezer (teeth not included)
Welcome back to Britworld, where geriatrics and cranky rule the day. Brit (short for Brittany, and is why dude prefers to be called "Brit") is an old coot, yes, but he's also friggin' invulnerable, which means that he's indispensable to the Pentagon and is the primary field agent deployed when the crapcake comes down. Brit is pretty much the ultimate government grunt. For those fond of hearkening back, Brit Volume 1: Old Soldier (Vol 1) goes into Brit's previous exploits, reprinting in color his three action-packed black & white one-shots (BRIT (2003), BRIT: COLD DEATH (2003), and BRIT: RED, WHITE, BLACK, AND BLUE (2004)). They're very much worth checking out.

BRIT Vol. 2: AWOL collects #1-6 of the ongoing title and finds Brit dealing with dinosaurs escaped from the San Diego Zoo, terrorist missiles and designer meta-viruses, more sinister super science gone amok, and the erosion of his invulnerability. And, since Brit is pretty much a one-trick pony, once you strip away his unhurtability (oh, snap, did I just coin a word?), well, all that's left is this unlikeable, surly geezer. Unless decades of field experience count as a superpower? Oh, and Brit's divorcing his wife, who just had his baby. A super jerk move for the ol' Brittany.

But, really, is this dude that much of a wanker? Or is something else going on? Brit's been shifted to a new government division and gotten himself a new boss, an underhanded scuzz named Deputy Director Slitter. And Slitter has something to do with Brit not being himself lately. Anyway, things get so bad that word gets to Brit's younger sister, Britney, even as she's busting an extraterrestrial drug deal. And, yes, Britney is near as tough as Brit.

BRIT reminds me a bit of the first SUPERPATRIOT mini-series I read years ago. It's not as much that the explosive action sequences are that similar (Superpatriot tends to rely more on firepower). Rather, Brit and Superpatriot both approach the conflict in a blue-collar, no-nonsense way. Not much with the fancy talk, these two dudes. Although, there's actually quite a bit of exposition going on in BRIT. It's just that the central character is this gruff, laconic curmudgeon. Ergo, there might be a misplaced notion that this title doesn't sizzle with dialogue. But, au contraire, Fred Astaire.

By the way, if I've gotten you at all curious about Superpatriot, give this one a try: Super-Patriot: Liberty and Justice. It's good stuff, even though it's not the mini-series I was referring to (that's not available in trade, far as I know).

Robert Kirkman edits the title but relinquishes writing duties to some schmoe named Bruce Brown, who isn't at all half bad, if these six issues are to judge by. Brown spends quality time with Brit's supporting characters, thus fleshing out even more this corner of the Kirkman universe (which Kirkman's more well-known superhero Invincible also inhabits). Donald Ferguson, robot extraordinaire and sort of Brit's field partner, keeps on being a favorite character of mine. Brit's sister debuts in issue #2 and she's one of those take charge types, reminding me somewhat of Power Girl in temperament and busty curvatures. Britney, alas, doesn't really do anything for me. Meanwhile, I wish there were more moments with baby Brittany and Jessica, whom Brit wants to inexplicably divorce. Jessica's not feeling too good about things right about now.

For those who'd rather forego the touchy-feely stuff, there are plenty of oddball visuals here, from sharks with jet packs to gruesome stuff being hronked out of nostrils to the fleeting awesomeness that is... the Platadoom. Oh, and another family member of Brit's shows up.

There's also a sketchy subplot which, if I got this right, involves Dr. Immortal sometime in the future sending a group of whoevers back to the present, probably to avert whatever scenario led up to the dystopian situation in that future. A splash page near the end of issue #6, featuring three of Kirkman's more prominent characters, did get my blood pumping. The next story arc bodes to be a doozy, so that's something good to go out on, anyway. That's right. Kirkman confirmed that BRIT will end after issue #12, having gotten bit by the poor sales bug.Turns out, the only way to break an unbreakable man is by killing off his series.

Brit Volume 3: Awol, not yet released, collects issues #7-12 and closes out this series; it has Brit teaming up with other Kirkman heroes. It's weird that Volume 3 is also co-titled "AWOL" because, trust me (I'm looking at the trade right now), BRIT Vol. 2 also has "AWOL" as part of the title description. Doesn't matter, though. If you're at all a fan of Brit or of Robert Kirkman, it's a cannot miss.

Great book!But watch out for the info!
Just to let you know, it says that this volume collects issues 7-12, but it is 1-6 of the new series by Bruce Brown and Cliff Rathburn (if you're looking for talented young Nate's art, it's not in this particular trade).If you have those already and are looking for 7-12 (which you should find odd to begin with, as issue 12 has not come out yet), then you best wait for volume 3.

But I'll tell you, for those who call themselves Kirkman fans, this is a great addition to the mythos, and has ties directly to Invincible.The art of Cliff Rathburn, as well as colors, are just about as professional as you can get, especially for a one man show.Andy Kuhns layouts are great, I don't know this for a fact, but I'd swear the man does layouts secretly for half the industry, and it's guys like him that keep our favorite books coming out on a regular basis.

Bonus content is in the same fashion as other Kirkman books, with some great behind the scenes stuff by Cliff and Andy Kuhn.

My Thoughts on Jeep Trails to Colorado Ghost Towns
I love this book because I have traveled to most of the Ghost Towns talked about in this book.Some of the pictures are the same as ones that I photographed while there.I am doing a slide show for my children of the places we visited and it helps me label the pictures for them.It is hard to remember the names of places until I got this book.We were there about 35 years ago and at that time we used the book Stampede to Timberline by Muriel Wolle as a guide.We basically followed the Switzerland Trail and started out from Boulder.We met Jimmy Hubbard at Ward who was a firemen and brakeman on the Denver-RioGrande railroad who told us about the book Switzerland Trail of America which we bought from the author, Forest Crossen.

Good for picking out sites of interest.
This book may have been the first gift my husband ever gave me, so I may be inclined to go easy on it.It is true that the book is outdated and that some of the sites and trails it describes have changed considerably since publication.We also found that the description of how to get to one of the ghost towns was inadequate--we happened on the remains of some buildings eventually, but that was sheer luck; we'd given up on finding the town and were headed back from our trip.
However, the book told us a lot about locations of potential interest, and we've had a lot of fun checking out places we never would have known about otherwise.It's nice to have older pictures to compare to what we see, and Brown offers great summaries of places we may wantto learn more about.
I'd definitely recommend this book--just make sure you have supplemental information to avoid frustration while navigating.

Oldie but Goodie
Robert L. Brown is one of the pioneers of the rediscovery and the history of Colorado's Ghost Towns. While this book was written in the mid 60's and is woefully out of date as a current guide, it does offer a unique perspective because of it's age. You will find here photos of the way these towns looked at the time the book was originally published. As a student of Colorado history, I find these invaluable. Comparing the current state of these towns to Brown's photos and historical photos of these towns in their heydey allows you to appreciate their fragility and their rate of decline. Don't buy this book as a guide, but buy it for it's historical perspective.

Bobby Brown . . . in the summer of 1975 Mr. Brown's book was 12 years old, yet the data was still accurate and relevant.The deregulation of Gold in 1974 made a prospector out of me and many others.I was driven to pan tailings ponds, sleuce boxes, and every creek nearby toany minig activity....
Every weekend I took my family tent camping to the great Colorado outdoors, using Brown's neat book.We found apothecary bottles, gold, and tons of fun.
Since then, many 4X4 books have been written about jeep trails and Ghost Towns and their info, trails and data are up-to-date and accurate to a fault.
After more than 39 years, how many trails are obliterated?How many ghost towns are gone and how much of the data, four decades old is even accurate, or on the map any longer.
Mr. Brown, his book . . . and me too, are all really old now.
There comes a time when the new must prevail.The old is put aside for up to the minute, on time info.It is, after all, the age of IT, isn't it?
In it's day, Mr. Brown's book was the cat's meow.Yikes!Did I really use that old cliche?See what I mean?
You young people run the world now.Us old timers live for our memories; and Jeep Trails to Colorado Ghost Towns is a really nice memory.(Sigh)Nostalgia, ain't it great?

Nostalgic fourwheeling
I bought this book while on vacation in Colorado. Other reviewers suggest that it is out of date and certainly there are more explicit trail guides to this State but it's a great piece of nostalgia.
