Dear Ms. Feehan...
I really do like the Carpathian novels, they are among my favorites to read and re-read. I really enjoyed the characters of Ivory and Razvan and I liked the wolves. I, like many other reviewers, liked the return of main characters from other books if only as secondary characters.

There is one detractor in this book that is reoccurring and annoying. The heavy usage of the Carpathian language, followed by a full translation of said phrase repeated throughout the book, jolted me out of the flow of the story. Puzzling out how a 5 word phrase can translate, however roughly, to "beloved" makes me want to pull out my linguistic textbooks - not my favorite thing to think of in the middle of a romance novel.

Please forgive my impertinence and the suggestion to include a glossary at the back(or front) of the novel.

Incredible
I loved this latest installment of the Carpathian series. Ivory and Razvan are such strong, courageous characters and their love story unfolds beautifully. Ivory is one of the most inspiring female characters I've come across in the romance genre.

After reading the blurb, I didn't think I was going to enjoy the book as much as I have some of the others in the series because Ivory is a powerful warrior and I normally prefer the male to be the more experienced one in terms of fighting skills. If you feel the same way, please don't let this put you off. Ivory might be a skilled hunter, but Razvan is her equal in every way. He is a strong and talented man and the perfect match for Ivory, who also has a vulnerable and sensitive side to her. I loved how peaceful Razvan was and how he lived completely in the moment because of his torturous past.

I thoroughly enjoyed the presence of characters from previous books. Gregori and Mikhail stand out the most and they were at their very best in this book. We learn a lot about Gregori and I would say he becomes a better person through his interactions with Ivory and Razvan. I was also very interested to find out why his eyes are silver, unlike other Carpathians.

Congratulations to Christine Feehan for writing such a complex, multi-layered plot with a big cast of characters. As the series progresses, it is wonderful to see how each of the Carpathians change and how different aspects of their personalities, both good and bad, come out in different situations. It makes them seem much more real. Feehan also does a wonderful job of making the heroes and heroines unique and giving them different gifts, all of which are important to their struggling race.

Strong Heroine and Respectful Considerate Hero
First you should know that I love Christine Feehan's worlds and the Carpathian world is one of my favorites. That being said, this is one of my favorite books Christine Feehan has written. The heroine is Ivory Malinov the sister of the 5 Malinov brothers that turned vampire after making a pact with the de la Cruz brothers to support the prince and uphold the honor of the Carpathian people.Ivory was supposed to have been killed, but she survived in agony for years.Now she runs across Razvan the number 2 enemy of the Carpathian people and finds that he has held out all these centuries trying to protect the people he loves but Xavier (enemy #1) has a link into Razvan and can take him over making him do awful things.

I found Razvan to be an incredibly respectful Hero. He takes the time to get to know Ivory and allow her to get to know him before tying their lives together.Ivory is the one who forces the issue and asks Razvan to say the ritual words (to save his life).This is quite a change from all the books where the man assumes he has the right to disrupt the woman's life and she has to make all the sacrifices.

Ivory is a great heroine.She is well trained in battle by her brothers and the de la Cruz brothers before Xavier tries to kill her.She has been living in the Carpathian Mountains for centuries fighting the vampires and is very skilled.She is incredibly smart and she and Razvan have the knowledge to turn the war against Xavier in the favor of the Carpathian people.Razvan is very accepting of his role as the most hated Carpathian, however Ivory is angry on his behalf to the point of belligerence; which I found appropriate for the situation.

The cast in this book contains many couples and warriors that we know from previous books which is fun.The interplay between Mikhail and Gregory is great as always.The warriors who do not trust Razvan and Ivory do not fare too well against them. There is a fun scene where the warriors are following the couple and Gregory is watching the outcome.My biggest complaint is Savannah.Is she ever going to grow up?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it made me go back and reread some of the previous books to remind myself what happened and how we got to where we are.

audiobook version
The story is so-so. But the audio book suffers from a horrible flaw - the actress uses a bizarre accent to portray Ivory. It sounds like someone with a speech defect or a major lisp, or like someone who is trying to imitate a Russian accent verh poorly. Really outstanding detailed look at Fetterman
This book is a real page turner, the real history reads fluidly and is not static boring historical accounts, but rather reads more like a story...you can almost feel the music and tempo increasing as the Indian attacks grow more frequent, .....isn't history fun in retrospect?Knowing now that Crazy Horse led the Fetterman attack, we know that he was there during these days watching each day as the fort was built.The military did a really outstanding job of planning every detail of how things were done, from building the fort with logs planed on two sides to how the wood trains would go out in two columns 100 yards apart with outriders.Using flag signals, to alert the fort as to Indians on one road or another.The Indians used mirrors to signal, and then started using flags to signal mocking the army's use of flag signaling.The horror of the men who were killed or captured....great book....get it today...

exciting
I am just now reading on the West and found this book to be exciting and fun to read. I learned a lot about the West shortly after the Civil War and could not put this book down. From the harsness of the conditions to bill Fort Phil Kearny to the Fetterman Massacre, it's all here and exciting to read.

Terrific examination of western tragedy
Before historical author Dee Brown penned his ultimate and most famous work "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee," he was out hiking in the sticks, so to say, with his carefully researched "The Fetterman Massacre."

Formerly known as "Fort Phil Kearny: An American Saga," but re-named "The Fetterman Massacre" to emphasize the most famous battle which took place at the cursed frontier fort, Brown's work is a carefully researched examination of the few fatal years of existence of a small cavalry outpost located in the foothills of the Big Horn mountains in 1865-66. When reading this work today, it is extremely difficult to imagine the terrible conditions these men lived under on a daily basis.

Sent by the U.S. government into a hostile land that belonged to the Sioux and Cheyenne Native Americans, these soldiers built a fort along the Montana Road to protect travelers and prospectors. But harsh weather conditions and the ever-present threat of furious Native American warriors offended by the placement of this fort in the heart of their ancestor's land, eventually led to the infamous massacre.

On the morning of Dec. 21, 1866, Captain William Fetterman led 80 men out of Fort Phil Kearny to rescue woodcutters under assault by Red Cloud's Oglala Sioux. Crazy Horse, among others, set a decoy trap for Fetterman and his doomed troops, and as they rode over a hill were attacked and killed to the man in a furious battle lasting about 20 minutes. This massacre eventually led to the dismantling of the fort, a Congressional investigation, and the destruction of Kearny Commander Henry Carrington's military career.

When reading Brown's novel today, one realizes that the situation Carrington was forced into was an almost impossible responsibility. Fetterman and his men were not the only casualties at this doomed outpost. In fact, after reading "The Fetterman Massacre," one realizes men died on a monthly basis, including woodcutters, settlers, prospectors and soldiers going to a nearby stream to fill water buckets.

Brown's work is fascinating, and he draws from such historical documents as Army records and first-hand interviews to paint a vivid, if not heartbreaking picture of these terrible frontier wars. When one stands today at the desolate, almost gothic location of the fort outside of Sheridan, Wyoming, one can almost hear the trumpet calls, the crack of rifles and the cries of men losing their lives. The battlefield and the fort locations are almost pristine, with only a nearby Interstate visible on the far horizon.

With Brown's painstaking documentation in hand, one can almost step back in time to this lonely place. And perhaps that is the strongest recommendation for this book. It recreates a time and era in frontier history that was brutal, if not alien. "The Fetterman Massacre" is an eye-opening work about a little-known moment in American history.

An army detail ambushed by the Sioux ten years before Custer
The Fetterman Massacre occurred right after the Civil War. On the Montana Road, the commander Colonel Carrington wasdetailed to build and staff three forts in Montana andWyoming.The Sioux and other Indian tribes led by Red Cloud laid seige to the forts.The Indians laid a trap and when one Captain Fetterman went beyond his orders, he and his troops were killed and their bodies mutilated. Dee Brown doesn't paint a pretty picture of the Army's decision to blaim Carrington or the Indian habit of butchering people. The only one who comes out positively is Colonel Carrington. I would agree with the earlier reviewer that the book starts out slowly, but it builds toward the climax of the battle and theaftermath.

Nolan's prose captures time, place and the personalities so well that you, the reader, feel as though you are there, live and in person, at whatever moment it is you are reading about. And those moments trace Phil Hill's career and life in detail from earliest days in the 1930s through achieving the Formula 1 Grand Prix Championship in 1961. The one and only Phil Hill
If you want to read a book that gives a good narrative of the great American race car driver Phil Hill then here it is. The book Ferrari a Champion's View, has been my favorite book of Phil Hill because of it's wonderful photographs by John Lamm and the interesting stories Phil reveals. Having said that, Phil Hill Yankee Champion goes into more depth into Phil's life of motor racing and his personal struggles towards becoming a Grand Prix champion. This addition of the book is also updated in both text and photographs.

A Gem For Your Western Library
Surprisingly there have been no reviews of this book written by Dee Brown eight years prior to his writing his best seller entitled Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.There recently was written a book on Fort Phil Kearny and the Fetterman Massacre that defended William Judd Fetterman's role in the fiasco that took place on December 21, 1866.Life on the Wyoming frontier was not a place one would relish to be during this time period.It is true that Colonel Henry Carrington was ill-suited to be placed at the helm of this command.However, the author makes a strong case for Carrington in this book.Carrington took pride in the fact that he was able to lead the construction of Fort Phil Kearny under trying conditions.Provisions were lacking for both the men and the animals, the winter of 1866-1867 was brutal with temperatures between minus 25 degrees to 40 degrees below zero, inadequate support from General Philip Cooke, isolation from civilization, and constant harassment from Indian attacks were all factors that Carrington had to deal with.Carrington may have been cautious in his relations with the Indians, but William Fetterman, who didn't respect his commander's judgment, paid for his recklessness along with eighty other men.Fetterman paid the ultimate price in finding that fighting Indians on the western frontier was not the same as fighting Confederates in the Civil War.

The town of Story, Wyoming, is named after Nelson Story who drove a herd of cattle north from Texas.He and his men were turned away by Kansas Jayhawkers and forced to travel along Nebraska's Oregon Trail and then up through Wyoming's Powder River country on into Montana.The town of Story is located where the Fort Phil Kearny wood train cut wood on Piney Island, which isn't an island at all.

The hero of the book is John Portugee Phillips who traveled four days through a raging snowstorm from Fort Phil Kearny to Horseshoe Station and on to Fort Laramie and arrived on Christmas night to spread the word of the tragedy that had befallen those at Fort Phil Kearny.Paul Revere had nothing on John Portugee Phillips.The book contains photos of the principal characters from this period.Fort Phil Kearny lasted only from 1866-1868 when Chief Red Cloud got his wish to have the forts of the Powder River country abandoned and destroyed.Colonel Henry Carrington lost command of the fort and his hard work in seeing to the building of the fort was all in vain.It took several years before his side of the story would be told.If you enjoy western history this little number by Dee Brown is a worthy addition to your library. ... One of the best books on investing you can buy
It exposes the secret to investing: There is no secret. Instead this book gives you the common-sense approach to your retirement nearly all of us are going to need. The book points out the challenge we are going to face as fixed benefit pension plans have faded and Americans are living longer. The double-whammy puts most in a box that a "home run stock" cannot get you out of.

Follow the well-spoken Mr. Dow's plan and you will not only retire with the assets you need, you will have the experience of being a business owner (not a trader) with your risks spread over a portfolio of which you can be proud.

Wonderful!
This is a great book that does what it says--it takes you step-by-step through the art of "realistic" (representational) collage.The author describes the various media (mostly paper, but also metal & fabric) for the finished collage and the different ways to adhere those media.The book also contains a section on other methods of achieving realistic collage by looking at other artists' work.It's definately worth the money if you enjoy collage.

"England -- The Left Guide"
If this is your cup of tea ...

"Despite its dominant role, London remains the only capital city to have entered the new millenium without its own governing body, a symptom of more than a decade and a half's political indifference from previous Conservative governments" (p 49.)

... then this is your guide.But if you'd like a less politically-obsessed tour of England, you'll stick with the Eyewitness Travel Guides or Fodor's.

Best single guide to England
Authors of this guide show excellent taste in their choice of noteworthy sites, and their capsule histories and background information are accurate, informative, and entertaining. Practical information on where to stay and eat is highly reliable.

Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans.They have a bewildering array of different guides.Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of.It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
SeeIt! is a concise guide that extracts the most popular items from the Gold Guide
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide

MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for pubs, hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date.It's great for teaching you how to use the underground and the double decker buses.The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth.I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences.MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the city centre.When you get to be an old London hand, remember that the classic Londoners guide will always be an A to Z (zed) map and guide.If you want to go a bit beyond the central core of the city (perhaps to Windsor, Hampton, or further away) you really need the proper AtoZ to be able to find exact routes and streets.

Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good.Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre.Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!

Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have.If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you.This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.

Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations.However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information.These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.

Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience.Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year.They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively.If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin).Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though.Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)

Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides.They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.

Frommer's
These are time tested guides that pride themselves on being updated annually.Although I think the guides below provide information that is in more depth or more concise (depending on what the guide is known for), if your main concern is that the guide has very little old or outdated information, then this would be a good guide for you.

Rick Steves' books are not recommended.They may be an interesting read but their helpfulness is very poor.They don't do well on updates, transportation details, or anything but the first-time-tourist routine and even that is somewhat superficial on anything but the mega-major sites.

Cheerio---I'd bloody give it 10 stars!
Last summer, I made my first trip to England, and it was absolutely wonderful!Felt like I was going home to my roots.
Also to see first-hand the areas where the RAF bravely held off the Nazi air attacks, and the civilian wardens watched the skies and the shores, it made me very thankful for our friends across the Atlantic.
The Rough Guide was a critical part of this memorable vacation.
It is frank and factual, but also upbeat.You will save money, and time, reading it.but you'll also be prepared to savor the history of the place, and meet the helpful and friendly people who live there.We took our Rough Guide everywhere.It was like a trusted, and good-spirited English friend.And it will sit on the top of our day packs during our next trip there.

Helped us plan a great trip
A year ago we went to England armed with the Rough Guide. I can't really compare it to other travel books (other than one of the Michelin Green guides, which we also used), but the Rough Guide worked for us.We particularly liked the fact that it did not only dirct us to the sights "everybody" would want to see.The writers were actually pretty up front about attractions that they considered to be overrated.The book was also really useful for the early stages planning our trip, because it provided a nice broad overview of the regions.
