thank you, when I receive it I will be happy to sentd a positive review

5-0 out of 5 stars This earth, this realm, this England....
Few travel destinations offer as much interesting variety in close proximity as England.London is one of the major cities of the world, with suitably world-class culture, shopping, and other entertainment.A day's drive or train ride can take the visitor to the natural beauties and recreational opportunities of the Peak District in the Midlands, the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales in the North of England, or the beaches in Southern England.Centuries of England history are preserved in the form of castles, great homes, museums, and cathedrals, whether as small as novelist Jane Austen's house in Chawton or as large as the enormous Warwick Castle in the Midlands. The latest version of "The Rough Guide to England" is a superbly detailed planning resource for the prospective visitor to England.

"The Rough Guide to England" is broken into sections, beginning with some basic travel information and proceeding to cover the ground in thirteen regionally oriented chapters. The regional chapters include suggested itineraries for those with limited vacation time. The guide also provides some informative essays on context, such as a brief history of England, notes on architecture, and books and films that may provide insight. There is a nice selection of color photographs of some of the more interesting venues, and the guide is richly illustrated with regional maps and city graphics. The guide includes numerous website addresses for those who desire further research on points of particular interest. The average traveler may desire only a driving map to navigate around England or a detailed Ordnance Survey map to roam any particular park.

"The Rough Guide to England" is written in standard Rough Guide language, addressed to the average traveler and not shy about expressing an opinion on which sights to see or what to expect in the way of manners and customs. It is very highly recommended to those interesting in planning a fascinating vacation in England, and as an orientation guide to those seeking more information on the English themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars a match for my requirements
It all depends on how much time you have to "indulge" into a travel guide. The rough guide compared to lonely planet satisfies me more because of the more mature approach to the writings, descriptions and presentations of the subject matter. I presume that both guide books offer more or less the same tourist info, so I choose this guide book for the simple fact which I value as most important that the authors take more time to make an enjoyable reading.

2-0 out of 5 stars A little too politically correct
The Rough Guide has some wonderful historical sections on such attractions as Hampton Palace and the Tower of London. But the writer seems to be ashamed of England's history, and the apologies are a bit over the top. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sea monsters & prehistoric birds
Reviewed by Evan Weldon (age 6) for Reader Views (6/08)

"Beyond the Dinosaurs: Monsters of the Air and Sea" by Charlotte Lewis Brown is about sea creatures and flying creatures that lived at the time of the dinosaurs and "were just as strange and wonderful as any dinosaur."The book talks about eleven different creatures:four bird-like ones and seven that spent most of their time in the water.

One of my favorite creatures from the book was the Pterodaustro, a flying creature that used its long thin teeth to filter sea water and trap tiny sea creatures that the Pterodaustro ate.I also found the Microraptor very interesting. It has neat claws on its wings that it used to climb trees. It couldn't really fly but used its wings to glide to the ground.

The illustrations were good, but not the best; most of the drawings show animals attacking or about to eat something. It is kind of hard to tell how big some of the creatures would have been in real life.

This book gave a little information about a lot of different prehistoric creatures. It might get kids interested in going to the library to learn more about some of these interesting animals. I liked "Beyond the Dinosaurs: Monsters of the Air and Sea" by Charlotte Lewis Brown and will read it again (all by myself!).

Product Description
Through fiction, memoir, music, photography, and art, In the Catskills highlights the Catskills experience over a century and assesses its continuing impact on American music, comedy, food, culture, and religion. It features selections from such fiction writers as Isaac Bashevis Singer, Herman Wouk, Allegra Goodman and Vivian Gornick; and original contributions from historians, sociologists, and scholars of American and Jewish culture that trace the history of the region, the rise of hotels and bungalow colonies, the wonderful flavors of food and entertainment, and distinctive forms of Jewish religion found in the Mountains.
What was life-the work, the play, the food, the romance-like at Catskills Mountains resorts? These very personal recollections capture the special sense of community and real sense of freedom that developed. Far from the welter of the city, Jewish families learned to vacation and enjoy themselves, to savor the social mobility and cultural space the resorts afforded, and to nourish their culinary and comic traditions. From "Bingo by the Bungalow" by Thane Rosenbaum to "Young Workers in the Hotels" by Phil Brown to "Shoot the Shtrudel to Me Yudel" by Henry Foner, this charming anthology captures an era that has had enormous impact on the Jewish experience and American culture as a whole.
"Whenever I speak about the Catskills," observes editor Phil Brown, "I am struck by the strength of people's desire to relive their experiences in the Mountains." If you've visited the Catskills yourself, or heard stories from your parents or grandparents, or are just interested in this extraordinary time and place, pack your bags and prepare to enjoy your stay In the Catskills. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Looking for the Catskills
If someone would only perfect a time machine, I'd rush back to the Catskills for a birds-eye view of places I've only read about or seen in movies. Alas, I must steep myself in books to flesh out a daydream of a past I never had. "In the Catskills" succeeds beautifully with its essays concerning every aspect of a unique Jewish American experience. My one disappointment - and it's a big one - is the photographs. I was hoping for a pictoral smorgasborg, filled with color photos of brochures and other memorabilia and many, many more photos of the hotels, performers, workers and guests. There are some jewels here, but some additional and higher-quality glossy photos would've worked wonders. All in all, though, a swell book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Shwenga. enjoy the Catskills from your air conditioned couch
How exciting... a book by the guy who runs those Catskills Institute workshops each August!I attended one a few years back, and I still have the audio tapes frlom some of the lectures.Collected here are 34 essays, excerpts from memoirs, songs, and stories of life in the Catskills in the Twentieth Century. The book includes the words and music to Shoot the Shtrudel to Me Yudel (1941) which was dedicated to Yudel Slutzky; an excerpt from Joey Adam's 1966 autobiography on the Borsht Belt; a reprint of "Jewish Farmers of the Catskills"; and even a piece from Cahan's "The Rise of David Levinsky."The book has seven main sections: history; boarding house, bungalow, and kuchalayn life; hotel life; entertainment; romance; religion; and food.Additional standouts include an excerpt from Kaaterskill Falls (by Allegra Goodman); I. B. Singer's "The Yearning Heifer";Thane Rosenbaum's "Bingo in the Bungalow"; Herman Wouk's "Marjorie at South Wind"; and Tania Grossinger's "Growing Up at Grossinger's." Brown started his career playing Sunday league football for South Shields side Red Duster in the South Shields Business Houses League, in the same team as Ray Dunbar and Bobby Davison who went on to play for Derby County and Leeds United,. He has previously managed Norwich City, Blackpool, Stockport County, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City. His biggest successes so far came at West Bromwich Albion, where he won promotion to the Premier League in 2002 and again in 2004. He is the son of former player Don Megson and the brother of Neil Megson, another former footballer. As a player, Megson was a tough-tackling defensive midfielder and something of a journeyman, playing for nine different clubs. He began his career at Plymouth Argyle, where he impressed enough for Everton to sign him for a £250,000 transfer fee. Megson struggled to establish himself in the Everton line-up, and after two years at Goodison, he moved to Sheffield Wednesday, where his father had once played, for a fee of £130,000. Megson immediately gained a place in Wednesday's starting lineup, and was a member of the team that gained promotion to the top flight in 198384, ending a 14-year exile from the elite. In his three years at Hillsborough, he missed only three league games. In the summer of 1984, he was signed by Nottingham Forest, only for Brian Clough to decide he did not need him. Excerpt: Ernest "Ernie" Moss (born 19 October 1949 in Chesterfield) is an English former footballer. He is most associated with his home town club, Chesterfield, where in three separate spells spanning nearly twenty years he made 469 Football League appearances, scoring a club record 162 league goals. His grand total of 749 appearances puts him in the top 20 all-time list for Football League appearances. He later embarked on a fifteen year career as a manager at the non-league level of the English football pyramid. He is still very much involved in football, regularly participating in charity matches with fellow former professionals, including former Sheffield Wednesday players Mel Sterland and Kevin Pressman. When Moss was just starting his career, Chesterfield manager Jimmy McGuigan described him as: "A big, willing bloke, a charming fellow who had raw potential. His balance was nil, therefore his ball control was nil. He knew where the goal lay but he couldn't often hit it." McGuigan worked hard to rectify this aspect of Moss' game and his hard word paid off, the youngster soon formed a deadly partnership with Kevin Randall. McGuigan's training improved his overall abilities, though his heading skills had always been present. Moss always posed an aerial threat and scored many of his goals by towering over defenders and directing the ball into the net. A big man, he was closer to a 'gentle giant' than a dirty player. Football historian Jeff Kent described him as a 'wholehearted striker'. Moss claimed that "For me competing was all about the pride and dignity of honest endeavour, - and winning wasnt a...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=12090227 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Haven't read this compilation, but the original is great

My friend Jeff rescued the original hand-typed manuscript from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry library back in the late 1980's and had it placed in their archives. We are fortunate that it has been preserved in its original form.

I have not read this editor's compilation, but the original writings by Bob Marshall about his tramps around the College's Cranberry Lake Biological Station are exceptional accounts of exploration in a landscape familiar to us.Familiar, that is, until we read his descriptions of the logging activity and settlement that have long since vanished from that corner of the Adirondacks.

Presumably this book is a faithful reproduction of Marshall's writings as a forestry student; but I've only read the original.I'd further recommend those who love geeking out on first-person accounts of geography and the backcountry go ahead and inter-library loan the photocopied version of Marshall's manuscript from SUNY ESF.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adirondack Hero
Few people in the world have had a wilderness area named after them, much less two.Bob Marshall is one such intrepid hiker/conservationist.Although the largest named after Marshall is in Montana, most of this book focuses on the Adirondacks.Bob Marshall was noted for his love of hiking and exploring, most notably the Adirondacks High Peaks and the Cranberry Lake Region.Marshall received a master's degree in forestry from Harvard.

Author Phil Brown has done a marvelous job reprinting all of Marshall's writings. Most notably are those about the High Peaks, in which, Marshall notes and ranks level of views and difficulty in climbing. Also of amazing clarity are Marshall's Cranberry Lake Region "pond-hopping" writings. Here Marshall also rates the beauty of each pond or lake he visits, easily hiking thirty miles in any given day.Marshall writes of numerous topics regarding preservation of the wilderness, going into marvelous detail of specific areas, watersheds and wild lands. He speaks eloquently of colleagues he hiked, explored and bonded with. The stories are colorful and rich with passion. Marshall's impact on the public's view of preservation in the first quarter of the last century cannot be underestimated. The legacy continues in this book.If the reader has been to any of these areas, they will feel the spirit of Bob Marshall hiking alongside them.

Author Phil Brown has a bachelor's degree in journalism and a master's in philosophy. This exhaustive work was a three year project.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautifully simple
This is a wonderful little gem. It isn't a high brow spiritual document meant to appeal to the brain- it's a little book that focuses on values, ethics and respect with thoughtful anecdotes. Great book for the adolescent as well as the adult- wisdom and grace are ageless. ... Read more

Product Description
Farley's San Francisco Chronicles by Phil Frank. Foreword by San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown.

Cartoonist Phil Frank's daily cartoon strip, Farley, has been keeping a finger on the pulse of the Bay Area for more than ten years. "I'm Ink, Therefore I Am!" gathers a collection of about 300 strips, originally published in the San Francisco Chronicle, for 1990 through 1996. Though local in orientation, the cartoons pertain to situations that arise anywhere people live, work, and vote in significant numbers. Characters such as Bruce D. Raven, Bruinhilda, and, of course, Farley himself are involved in mayoral elections, voter referendums, the local sports scene, and the social climate. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Relief from the troubles of the world
This is the twin to his "Going Local" -- local topical cartoons about San Francisco. Even though I live near SF rather than in it, I find them hilarious and read them every day at sfgate.com. Thank you, Mr Frank for so much relief from all the troubles of the world!

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique view of San Francisco
Phil Frank has been drawing a daily cartoon for the San Francisco Chronicle for about 10 years or so. While I lived there his strip had always been the first thing I read in the morning, and I am rather happy that finally there is a collection of selected strips from '90 - '96. I guess I must have seen most of them before, but aside from a lot of fond memories I also got a lot of laughs out of this collection. But it certainly isn't one of the "you-had-to-be-there-to-get-it" things - I have loaned my copy to a couple of people her in Germany, and they also were rather amused by it. There is a fair amount of local politics that serves as a background for the jokes, but there are also many stories about the affairs of the heart of the hero of the strip, Farley, and his on-going realtionship with Irene the metermaid who makes parking such sweet sorrow for him, about the four bears who run the Fog City Dumpster for the four-legged gourmets of San Francisco, and ab! out Orwell T. Cat's carreer as a fall-cat in the White House. So just go ahead and buy it - it's really, really funny, and it's a lot cheaper than going to San Francisco yourself. ... Read more

Product Description
"I just got mad. I couldn't breathe in my own house."
—Ruth Reed, a resident of Ocala, Florida, who lives next door to a Royal Oak Charcoal factory

Across the United States, thousands of people, most of them in low-income or minority communities, live next to heavily polluting industrial sites. Many of them, like Ruth Reed, reach a point at which they say "Enough is enough." After living for years with poisoned air and water, contaminated soil, and pollution-related health problems, they start to take action—organizing, speaking up, documenting the effects of pollution on their neighborhoods.

In Sacrifice Zones, Steve Lerner tells the stories of twelve communities, from Brooklyn to Pensacola, that rose up to fight the industries and military bases causing disproportionately high levels of chemical pollution. He calls these low-income neighborhoods "sacrifice zones"—repurposing a Cold War term coined by U.S. government officials to designate areas contaminated with radioactive pollutants during the manufacture of nuclear weapons. And he argues that residents of a new generation of sacrifice zones, tainted with chemical pollutants, need additional regulatory protections.

Studies show that poor and minority neighborhoods are more polluted than wealthier areas located farther away from heavy industry. Sacrifice Zones goes beyond these disheartening statistics and gives us the voices of the residents themselves. We hear from people like Margaret L. Williams, who organized her neighbors to demand relocation away from two Superfund hazardous waste sites; Hilton Kelley, who came back to his hometown to find intensified emissions from the Exxon Mobil refinery next to the housing project in which he grew up; and Laura Ward, who found technicians drilling a hole in her backyard to test groundwater for pollution from the nearby Lockheed Martin weapons plant. Sacrifice Zones offers compelling portraits of accidental activists who have become grassroots leaders in the struggle for environmental justice and details the successful tactics they have used on the fence line with heavy industry. ... Product Description

The political stakes of environmental science are high. Scientists who study the effects of toxic substances in people’s workplaces and communities face extreme contention as they forge through a political landscape, which is fraught with worldwide debates.

A relatively new science, environmental health has formed a new paradigm where the experiences, participation, and discussion of laypeople collaborate with scientists to reshape scientific inquiry, pose new questions, offer new techniques, synthesize more areas of knowledge, and demand democratic involvement in research, regulation, and health prevention and treatment.

This issue of The Annals reflects this new "public paradigm" with a diverse group of contributors from a variety of specialties - social movement activists, scientists, government officials, and academic researchers.

The first section of the special issue, "Epidemiology and Science," examines the types of data available in explaining environmental factors of diseases. These articles focus on how to use that data to link environmental factors to illness and how to use what we learn to prevent environmental disease.

The second section, "Social Policy and Social Movements," reviews some historical case studies where activists alerted the country to specific toxic waste hazards, various investigative measures that have been used to uncover hazards and handle environmental disputes, and the responsibilities and roles of activists in shaping social policy.

Concluding with a review article that showcases major contributions of recent books, this issue of The Annals will continue to fan the ongoing debate over environmental health concerns while shedding light on this complex and contemporary area of study.
