Product Description
"Pudgy" is more than a children's story. It is a modern parable about the courage to seek help and the grace to help others. The title character, Pudgy, is a beautiful little fish who is beached on the sands of a Bahamian island. His pleas for help are heard by different passers-by. Each has a different response toPudgy's cry of desperation. As the story unfolds, young children will grow to love Pudgy. But just as importantly, the child in each of us will know from our own experience what it means to be "beached". As the author writes in his preface, "Pudgy is us. All of us can identify with being beached, in need of a helping hand. It is a powerful metaphor giving voice to our own inner pain."It is a story about being "beached", about needing each other, and ultimately about feeling safe. In his reflections on Pudgy, Dr. Allen writes:"In a society where only the strong are safe, no one is safe because no one is strong forever. We are part of the whole. We need each other. If we create a community where even the weakest among us is safe, then we are all safe."In the story of Pudgy we encounter the love that will never let us go and the face that never turns away. ... They would have killed anyone else. Now, in retrospect, it seems to her as if she was called - dragged slowly towards Mme Berry over all the immeasurable dark acres of wakefulness...'The House Of Balthus is a magical novel which has the intensity of a dream. Characters from the artist Balthus' paintings walk out of the canvas and take on lives of their own, sharing the spaces of an ancient chateau, now turned aprtment block, in a large French provincial town. The concierge, Mme Lecault, watches closely her tenants, among them the Countess, the Professor, the Painter, Therese and her young lover Michael - but knows only the surface of their lives. She spends her sleepless nights talking to Mme Berry who lives, it would appear, in another century. There is the sound of sobbing, which echoes between rooms and across yearsthere is desire stretched so taut the page seems to vibrate with it, and the pain of ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hypnotic and compelling
A hypnotic and compelling novel that explores the interior world of Balthus' paintings by fictionalising their characters and enabling them to act within and without Balthus' world. Although comparisons are possiblewith Georges Perec's Life: A User's Manual and Patrick White's The Aunt'sStory, Brooks is an original. His quiet voice will stay with the readerlong after most flashier novels have been forgotten.

4-0 out of 5 stars A haunting and beautifully written work.
Although perhaps reliant on the romantic French location this book has the feel of a languid early summer afternoon. Indulge yourself and the feeling will linger. ... Read more

Product Description
The Objective Standard is a quarterly journal of culture and politics written from an Objectivist perspective (Objectivism being Ayn Rand’s philosophy of reason, egoism, and laissez-faire capitalism). The journal is based on the idea that for every human concern—from personal matters to foreign policy, from the sciences to the arts, from education to legislation—there are demonstrably objective standards by reference to which we can assess what is true or false, good or bad, right or wrong. The purpose of the journal is to analyze and evaluate ideas, trends, events, and policies accordingly.

We maintain that the standards of both knowledge and value derive from the facts of reality; that truth is discovered only by means of reason (i.e., through observation and logic); that the factual requirements of man’s life on earth determine his moral values; that the selfish pursuit of one’s own life-serving goals is virtuous; and that individual rights are moral principles defining the fundamental requirements of a civilized society.

We stand opposed to the notion that the standards of knowledge and value are not factual but subjective (feeling-based) or other-worldly (faith-based); that truth is ultimately dictated by majority opinion or a “supernatural” being’s will; that democratic consensus or “God’s word” determines what is moral; that sacrifice for “the common good” or in obedience to “God’s commands” is virtuous; and that rights are social conventions or “divine decrees.”

In stark contrast to these philosophic approaches, ours is a philosophy of reality, reason, egoism, and laissez-faire capitalism. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars good book
A practical book used in a Master's level education course on counseling for the non-counselor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Interviewing
I bought this book for a college counseling class.Although I have been reading because I have too, I catch myself wanting to read the next chapter. This is a great book to learn from.I highly recommend it if you are considering counseling as a profession or just want to improve your communication skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy!
Great for school and work. This book will be used over and over again while you master the craft.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that works
I've been using this book for years in the MA program in counseling at NYU in our intro counseling skills course. I use this book to supplement the IPR video tapes by Kagan. My students have really enjoyed using the book. It allows real practice of counseling skills. Each counseling skill is broken into chapters: A client makes a statement and then there are three possible ways that the counselor can respond. It clearly explains why the one answer is correct and the other two are not. (I have my students cover the answers so they have to guess which one is correct.)
If you are looking for a book to practice counseling skills, I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Way to Go
This book has some intense information on how to maximize an interviewing process.I will definately use it's techniques in my Naturopathic Consultation Practice. ... Read more
