Description:
Eight organic acids were measured in 111 rain events occurring between September 1996 and May 1998 in Wilmington, North Carolina. Formic and acetic acids were the most abundant comprising approximately 75% of the total molar quantity of organic acids. The annual volume-weighted concentrations of organic acids in order of decreasing abundance in rainwater was formic (9.9@mM), acetic (7.3@mM), oxalic (1.8@mM), lactic (1.3@mM), succinic (1.0@mM), malonic (0.7@mM), pyruvic (0.3@mM), and maleic (0.1@mM), with methanesulfonic and glyoxylic acids usually below their detection limit. Growing season back-trajectory data provided strong evidence that terrestrial organic acid sources dominated over marine sources. Air mass back-trajectory analysis indicated that during the growing season air mass origin had a consistent impact on concentrations of rainwater organic acids. Rain with continental back-trajectories coming from the west had the highest concentrations of organic acids while two predominately marine back-trajectories had the lowest concentrations. Concentrations of organic acids in non-growing season rain did not display a consistent pattern indicating variability in sources. Seasonality of individual organic acids for specific back-trajectories was most pronounced in terrestrial back-trajectories and least in the marine back-trajectories indicating that seasonality in rainwater organic acid concentrations is driven by variations in terrestrial sources. Formic to acetic acid ratios (F:A), previously an indicator of terrestrial versus marine sources of these organic acids, were similar for all back-trajectories reflecting anthropogenic impacts on F:A locally and regionally. The ratios of malonic to succinic acids (M:S), also an indicator of sources for these acids, indicated direct anthropogenic sources for terrestrial back-trajectories and secondary processes for marine back-trajectories. ... Product Description
When Alex was a boy growing up in Tennessee, his grandmother used to tell him stories about their family, stories that went way back to a man she called "the African" who was taken aboard a slave ship bound for Colonial America. As an adult, Alex spent 12 years searching for documentation that might authenticate what his grandmother had told him. In an astonishing fet of genealogical detective work, he discovered the name of "the African"--Kunta Kinte--as well as the exact location of the village in West Africa from where he was abducted in 1767. Roots is based on the facts of his ancestry, and the six generations of people--slaves and freedmen, farmers and lawyers, an architect, teacher--and one acclaimed author--descended from Kunta Kinte. ... The Powerful Newbery Award-winning classic

A landmark in children's literature, winner of the 1970 Newbery Medal, and the basis of an acclaimed film, Sounder traces the keen sorrow and the abiding faith of a poor African-American boy in the 19th-century South. The boy's life is changed forever when his father is caught stealing a ham to feed his starving family. His dog, Sounder, is wounded in the incident and waits faithfully for his master to come home. Read by Avery Brooks, this timeless and compelling parable will move listeners of all ages.

Amazon.com Review
Sounder is no beauty. But as a coon dog, this loyal mongrel withhis cavernous bark is unmatched. When the African American sharecropperwho has raised Sounder from a pup is hauled off to jail for stealing ahog, his family must suffer their humiliation and crushing loss with norecourse. To make matters worse, in the fracas, Sounder is shot anddisappears. The eventual return of a tattered and emaciated Sounderdoesn't change the fact that the sharecropper's oldest son is forced totake on man's work to help support the family. His transition toadulthood is paved by the rocks and taunts hurled at him by convicts andguards as he searches for his father. But along this rough road heultimately finds salvation as well.

William H. Armstrong's Newbery Award-winning novel quickly became a classicas a moving portrayal of resilience and hope in the face of profound humantragedy. Decades later, the bittersweet story still rings true, asstrong-spirited individuals continue to battle the evil of prejudice. (Ages9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book

Sounder is a story of a boy and his troubling life. He is a black boy that is very pore and is discriminated by his color but he had his trust dog to keep him company. They live on a small part of someone else land growing food for winter. He was a sharecropper. Later in the story his father stole a ham. That night he was arrested. They found evidence it was him that stole the ham.

His father was in the local prison for a few weeks, but then he was moved to a slave work camp. After the boy found out about his father he set out on a journey to find his beloved dad.

Then after a year of searching he came upon a school. He saw about a nine students come out. Latter a teacher came out. The teacher took him home and cleaned him up. Some time latter he gave him a home and became his dear friend. He also tat him how to read.

Then he went home in the summer, to tell his family of his great new friend.

Will he ever find his father, you'll gust have to read and find out.

My review of this story is, it's good for school reports, but not a very good book for reading for fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Sounder!
Sounder by William H. Armstrong has long been considered a classic in children's literature. It's the simple story of a young African American boy and his beloved dog named Sounder. The boy comes from a poor Southern iliterate family. Sounder is his best friend.

In Sounder, Armstrong writes simply about the times of being an African American young male in the South in the early twentieth century. The story was published in the late 1960s and earned plenty of accolades. The story was later made into a film with Cicely Tyson in an Oscar nominated performance as the mother.

While the story may not be complicated, it's beautifully done to capture the essence and momentum of the time that it was written. It is still read today and recommended in schools for young students.
It can be a tear jerker, so you will need a box of tissues.

1-0 out of 5 stars I cant believe this was made into a movie!!!
I read this book for my book report thinking that it would be good considering it was made into a movie, and it got the newberry honor award. Boy was I wrong. The plot is dull boring and stupid. In my opinion this is what the bookwas like: a boy is poor his dad goes to jail he vists his dad,his family hunting dog runs away, his dog and dad die,he gets a tutor the end. They only mention the dogs name and no one else. I ended up doing another book bfor my book report because it was so bad.

If u think this book is good then your crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(in my opinion)
I love dog books so this was sheer "torture" for me

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book for All Ages to Read
Sounder is a good book for all ages to read. Some of the language is difficult to understand because it is set in the 19th century American South. The main characters are the boy and Sounder. The story begins by telling about his family, which includes his father, mother, younger siblings, and Sounder, the family's coon dog. They are extremely poor and have to work hard for everything that they have, which isn't much.

One day three law men come to haul off the dad for stealing a ham. They are very abusive to the father, chaining him and even striking him in the face with the chain. Sounder was making such a ruckus that one of the deputies shot him. The blast tears off the whole side of his head and shoulder.

The author gives such a good description of the animal's pain, sounds, and motions, that you can actually visualize the scene. What surprised me the most was the punishment that the father received. To me it didn't really fit the crime of just stealing a ham. He was placed in jail and placed on a chain gang for years and years.

I felt really sorry for this family. They really had to take up the slack and work even harder from dawn until dusk, every day, just to survive. I am very thankful that I wasn't in this boy's situation. I am very protective of my family and wouldn't have been able to restrain myself. I would have been jailed as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars one of those very few very good books for children
This book is not just another book about a boy and his dog, but about the larger issues of life and meaning.
The Platonic theme of the existence of anhigher order of ideas and shapes is one of the nice things about the ending.
The black boy comes to grips with a world of prejudice for the black
southern share crop farmers. Slavery may have ended in the 1860's, but
you really can't much tell it from this book. Freedom here seems to be the freedom to be mistreated ans starved inside an otherwise rich nation.
The poverty here seems to be the color white in the south.
One teacher reaches out and helps and shows that
not all men are liars and cruel? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I soooo love this book! It basically gives insight into the ups and downs of a relationship. How sometimes we may lose sight of the important things. I love most, the realistic characters in this one. Great read! Hard to put down.

3-0 out of 5 stars Terry McMillan at top of her game
"Waiting to Exhale" received all of the acclaim and is the book that changed the face of publishing to a significant degree as the industry suddenly realized that African Americans read too, and sometimes even like to read about fictional characters who remind them of themselves. But in my opinion this is Ms. McMillan's strongest novel. It's easy to become immersed in her work, forgetting that you're reading and instead envisioning yourself as a fly on the wall easedropping on lives that seem as real as those of your friends and neighbors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real
I think that up until right now this is my favorite book.I like it b/c it was so realistic and not like your typical romance novel.NOT THAT I HAVE ANYTHING AGAINST ROMANCE NOVELS.I especially like how in the end the reader never finds out just what happens. Some people might not like this and I probably wouldn't much but for this book it was excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars hated the ending
It was a good book but I wanted a surprise ending but it never came lol.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prepare for Laughs
This complex love affair is very true-to-life, and though the characters may not have the baggage couples in most stories do, you'll be riveted. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Kindle version has issues
Roots is a 5+ star novel. However, I purchased this version for Kindle and there are numerous spelling, typing, and punctuation errors that do not exist in the original novel. They aren't enough to detract from the reading experience, but I think the Kindle version should be offered with the same quality that is expected from a printed novel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still effective after all these years
I re-read this book for the first time in over 30 years, and still find it an effective portrayal of the horrible institution of slavery.

The first time I read it, I was a child (5th grade), so some things did hit me differently.I obviously understood the sexual content more.Further, at the end of the book, I had to question Mr. Haley's research. It seemed to come too easily, making me question whether he really found the African from whom he was descended.

I also question his portrayal of how Kunta Kinte was captured.I will do independent reading concerning the slave trade, but I don't see how it would have made sense for toubob to wander through Africa in the hopes that they will be able to nab an individual who wandered outside his village, considering that they had kings and warlords who were willing to do business with them, selling off criminals and POWs.

Mr. Haley admits that, except for the outline provided by his family's oral tradition, much of this book is, out of necessity, fiction. But it will nonetheless move you.

Another controversy about this book is the accusation that Mr. Haley plagiarized material from Harold Courlander's "The African" [ASIN:080503000X The African].(I have read on the Internet that Mr. Haley had to pay $650,000 in damages; I have no idea if this is true.)I read "The African" right before re-reading "Roots".They cover similar material in part, but I was unable to discern particular passages that seemed to be lifted out of "The African".If someone could clarify where the plagiarized passages are, I'd appreciate it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best!!!
Roots is probably the best novel I've ever read. It's a saga telling the story of the African-American experience from the time before America existed, to the present day (or close to it).

A captivating novel. I usually lose interest in novels after about page 150, but I couldn't put this down! I read all 700+ pages in about 5 days...

The most important novel in America!!

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent characters, but too long and a hurried ending
The ingenuity of the characters is what I enjoy most about Roots. What irritates me, though, is the novel's length. There are too many chapters about Kunta Kinte in Africa and in Virginia, and there are too few chapters about the last two generations preceding Haley himself.

Each successive generation is memorable: there is, of course, Kunta, the native of Africa. His only daughter, Kizzy, is sold away and raped by her new master. The son begotten from that rape is "Chicken George," an accomplished cockfighter. His part is my favorite.

Chicken George has many children, chief among them Tom, the blacksmith. Once the family is freed by their masters and moves to Tennessee, the book picks up pace, going over two generations in the same amount of print used to describe Kunta's miserable, horrific passage across the Atlantic. These generations are less memorable because the book moves too quickly at this point to give juicy details. And the final few chapters, chronicling Haley's research, is gratuitous and self-aggrandizing.

Aside from a slow first two acts and abrupt ending, Roots is excellent, character-driven story-telling. I don't mind that there factual errors (that scholars have pointed out) and much of the meat of the story is a novelization of Haley's "roots." Go in regarding this is a novel, which it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Black History- Roots by Alex Haley
This book written by Alex Haley, has helped everyone to trace their roots even more. We're all connected to each other no matter where we live or who we are.
Black History should be taught throughout the year, not just one month (FEBRUARY). All races should be included, it's part of life. ... Read more
