Not one of my favorite 'real-world' books...
Some of the employment horror stories are funny but several chapters were quite honestly, vulgar.This book is loaded with graphic, sexual content and strong language.When reading the chapters I felt that some of the supposed "real-life experiences" were exaggerated or even fabricated.I have heard better "on-the-job-horror-stories" from my co-workers than what I read in this book.

Summary

Octavia Victoria Rogers Albert was born a slave in Oglethorpe, Ga., on December 24, 1853. There are not many known facts regarding to her personal life. Five years after she was emancipated in 1865, she enrolled in Atlanta University, and studied to be a teacher. She began her career in Montezuma, Georgia, where she met her husband, A. E. P. Albert. They were married in 1874. Mr. Albert was ordained a minister in the Methodist Episcopal church in 1877, and in 1878, Octavia was converted from the African Methodist Episcopal church to her husband's faith. He baptized her in Houma, Louisiana. The Alberts had one child, Laura. They consistently offered food, shelter, instruction, or other assistance to many former slaves in need.

A. E. P. Albert and his daughter Laura published The House of Bondage in 1890, shortly after Octavia's death. It is a compilation of narratives based on Octavia's interviews with seven former slaves in Houma, Louisiana, fifteen years after slavery ended. The most prominent figure in the work is Charlotte Brooks, a former slave sold from her Virginia family to Louisiana. The six other narratives supplement Brooks's material, as do poetry and speeches. Primary subjects include the inhumane treatment endured by many slaves, the status of the freedmen during Reconstruction, and the plight of the elderly. Octavia wrote the work both to combat negative stereotypes of African Americans and to transmit slave stories to future generations. She believed in what she called a "trinity of power"—education, property, and character—as the means for African Americans to achieve the social status they deserve, and the power of her belief gives the work an evangelistic tone.

Make your patterns fit YOU! Similar to Lutterloh pattern system
I found my Sunburst Pattern System at a garage sale for $2.00, and it had everything, including not only the Women's Fashions, but the Children's and the Men's Supplements, which were ALL in the bright orange and blue notebook! As I began to use it, I realized it was similar to the Lutterloh System which I also have, but with the Sunburst Pattern System, I didn't have to adjust for not using shoulder pads like I did with the Lutterloh System. There was even a bonus dart moving tool that you could cut out and glue to cardboard to make it last longer.I really like the classic styles in the Sunburst system because they didn't require as much alterations or re-fitting as the Lutterloh system required, since the Lutterloh system seems to be mostly 1980s big shoulder pad kind of styles (even though I bought it around 2000).Because I purchased the Lutterloh System new, I spent over $250.00 just to get the kit with the pattern book, "the Advanced Guide to the Lutterloh Pattern System", the two Designer's Curves for making the patterns (which can be used for any pattern and fitting", their sewing book that I think is "The Essentials" (I share these with my mother who uses both pattern fitting systems, so they travel between our homes 45 minutes apart). I use both systems, but you could easily get by with just one or the other. My mom who makes ALL of her own clothing uses both systems to design her own clothes patterns and has been much happier since we started using these systems. Like me, she is 3 different sizes, and even fitting patterns was a nightmare for both of us.We learned all kinds of quick, helpful tips that have made our sewing look MUCH more professional, and saves us time too.I finally feel like I can sew for myself with confidence, as long as I keep taking new measurements when I gain or lose weight! Biased
Just another sociology book about white-bashing. I have to continue to use this book until Dec. 2010 despite the fact that I hate it. Only buy this book if you have to for a class. Even though it isn't explicitly said, this author portrays whites as all being oppressors of the poor minorities. What's the real truth? There are people everywhere, of all races, that are racist, and most people are actually not racist. This book sucks, and I've been exposed to plenty of books, especially since I'm a senior at a state university, and have been taking psychology, sociology, and human development classes for four years.

A decent overview but some inaccuracies and biases
I've only read about half the book so far for my parenting class I'm taking. Overall it seems to be a fairly decent overview of what research and professionals are saying now, although I have spotted some inaccuracies in the book and it definitely shows some biases in certain areas. For example the book talks about the growing problem that there are more and more older people compared to younger people. Brooks says this is due to the lifespan increasing. The human lifespan is actually not increasing it remains around 120 years, it is life expectancy that is increasing not lifespan. She goes on to quote stats of life expectancy, I don't know if it was a mistake or is she doesn't know the difference between the two. Also it bothered me the way she described the 50's nuclear family as focusing on the emotional well being of all family members. This was far from the truth in many families which focused on the power of the male not on how everyone (particularly the wife and kids) was feeling. This seemed to reflect personal beliefs of the author or maybe she never really researched that particular area and just made assumptions. I'm a family development major and the "Lead it to Beaver" family was more of a myth than the norm in the 50's.

I don't really like the layout of the summaries at the end of the chapters either. They are a bit too brief and don't necessarily hit on all the main points.

Other than that it is a fairly easy read, it's organized fairly well, and has some good information and advice in it. Although I may sound like I don't like the book, it's not all that bad. It would be a mistake to "through the baby out with the bath water."
