4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Floridians
It's great for south Florida home herb growers especially since our climate and growing season is so different from most reference books.

5-0 out of 5 stars a keeper
Normally I want to see a garden book have colorful pictures using the plant in the landscape. Some simple black and white drawings are shown. That is the only negative I can think of but this guide is so good and loaded with so much great information that I am giving it five stars.

It lists the pros and cons of growing herbs and spices in north, central and south Florida, remembering that the zones are different. It makes a difference!Besides the common name it lists the botanical name of the plants. Why do you want to know this?Because when you want to buy tarragon are you getting true French tarragon or Mexican tarragon? They are very different plants and enjoy different climates. To simplify matters a wonderful cross reference of common and botanical names is found at the back.

A mail-order and resource directory, places to visit, local herb societies and plants the attract butterflies and hummingbirds are among some the topics you'll read about.Herbs that do well indoors or can be used as ground covers are listed. Necessary warnings on using the plant medicinally is found at the end of some descriptions; a big plus since I sometimes think we forget that not every herb is made to be consumed.

I found this wonderful book at my local library while trying to find something to read on herb growing.Floridians have to tackle heat and humidity for a good portion of the year which can cause many plants to succumb. It is definitely not the same as growing herbs up north or out west. So, whether you are an experienced gardener or someone who has just moved here, this book is a keeper.I am going to put it on my wish list.

There are two kinds of people, those who do the work and those who take the credit. Try to be in the first group; there is less competition there.-Indira Gandhi

5-0 out of 5 stars my wife absolutely loves it.
I bought this book for my wife, who is into natural health remedies. She absolutely loves this book. She not only learned alot more about growing herbs, but harvesting them and what to do with them after she has them. She's happy I'm happy.

Product Description
Being an African American senior in high school and a victim of racism for most of her life, Brandy turns to her beloved journal to express her thoughts.

When Brandy develops a crush on Ian, the most attractive boy in school, she decides to befriend him. She then realizes that being friends with Ian isn’t as easy as it once seemed. In Ian’s eyes, being privileged is being well known, handsome, and white, all of which he is. He fears that being friends with Brandy will destroy his reputation.

A math quiz starts the beginning of a series of tutoring sessions that brings the two together, but it also starts a series of assaults on Brandy and Ian that are fueled by hate. Brandy’s left to wonder if her written thoughts can help heal her pain, and if fate would allow two teens to fall in love against the odds.

3-0 out of 5 stars Did not Stand Out, but was ok
This book was ok. It was a quick read. For the most part, I enjoyed most parts of the book. I was interested in how it raised the universal ONGOING issue of racism. The characters were developed well and I literally cringed every time Brandy was harassed by those students in her school. The book could've been better, but for the most part it was okay.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please, Please Don't Buy This Book!!!!
The previous reviews must have been written by Ms. Sanders friends and family, please don't spend money on this book. This is the worst book I've ever read. The editing is horrible, as Ms. Sanders butchers her way through the english language you'll begin to wonder how the book was even published in the first. My guess is self publishing strikes again!! You feel no sympathy for the main character, she's a bit of a stalker and she has no backbone. Oh, and please don't let me forget to add she asks for you to feel sorry for her throughout the book.

Yuck, don't get me wrong, I'm an AA female and I love IR novels and I love YA novels, but this is book is a good waste of paper. This books reads like one of my students fifth grade essays. I spent the majority of the time making grammatical corrections. I hated this book with a passion.

Again, I implore you please, please don't waste your money. There are really good books at amazon. There are millions of titles don't waste your money and your time.I would like my money back, but this book I won't even resale; I'm shredding it and using the paper for recycling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too
Ms. Sanders pulls no punches with this honest and gripping story of racial tension and hate at Prescott High.

This is the story of Brandy Morgan. She is a typical teenager, wanting to fit in and have friends. But she's black and poor. Not the qualities needed to be cool at Prescott High. Cool would be Ian Fuller and his buddies.

Brandy gets the feeling that Ian isn't like his friends. He's not outwardly cruel to Brandy. He just ignores her when his friends are around. But Brandy is persistent and keeps trying to befriend Ian. Finally, Ian takes up Brandy's offer to help tutor him in math. From there, their friendship blossoms.

But not without problems. The high school students will not tolerate the mixing of the two races. Brandy is harassed and assaulted in various ways. No one should be subjected to the humiliations that Brandy must endure. As Ian's feeling for Brandy change, he is drawn into her everyday troubles.

The reader gets a glimpse inside Brandy's mind with excerpts from her diary. It gives insight to her unwavering spirit, but also her struggles not to hate those that seem to hate her.

This is not an easy book to read. It brings forward feelings of racial tension and distrust of someone that is different from yourself. It's hard to imagine that such reactions are still present in modern society, but current events make it all too clear that it's still prevalent in our generation.

Ms. Sanders closes out the book with examples of recent hate crimes that were in the media. Fans of the A&E program American Justice will be familiar with two of the cases listed: Teena Brandon and Matthew Shepard.

I suggest this book as recommended reading to everyone. If nothing else, it would provide a heated discussion on where our society is headed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Romance for anyone
This book was a great read.It has vivid characters, excellent plot, and is well written. Most it's a romance story but it also educates the reader about hate crime and racism.

My favorite part of the story was the end when the plot takes a surprising turn.I love the main character Brandy for her persistence and determination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reconnaissance - an expert discovering, collecting, interpreting...
From Transylvania to the highest echelon of government, a man who entertained heads of State from around the world, to the halls of government secrecy, this book could easily have been the backdrop for a Tom Clancy or Robert Ludlum espionage novel - but this is NOT fiction - it is fact... and an excellent read. Behind-the-scenes intel gathering and how "things might have been" if not for this amazing little-known figure from our nation's history - a life dedicated to liberty and freedom and whose reconnaissance advanced that cause.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great new author
I was a little hesitant to read this at first, just because there is so much repetition in this genre. I picked up on a recommendation from a friend. This is not at all what I was expecting, although the author takes some familiar elements on the whole modern vampire story, she moves in a unique direction. Her vamps are neither the master manipulators of the shadows, or shiny sweet smelling cuddlers with fangs. They are real people, traumatized and cursed by their change, but not defined by it. Catriona, an 18th century alchemist rendered immortal by a curse, isa charismatic heroine that draws you into the story. Compelling in her own right, Catriona's story deepens when she falls for Tristan, an ungifted mortal and itinerant musician, who offers her a chance to lead a life uncomplicated by magic and monsters.Of course Catriona's past catches up to her (otherwise wouldn't be much of a story), and she has to fight to save her friends from both their enemies and themselves.
This book is the most original story and concept I've read in a long time. The characters are really well written, and love them or hate them you become attached to them from almost the first page. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the dark fantasy / modern vampire genre but who is looking for something new and different within that field. ... Read more

Product Description
In The Union Cavalry Comes of Age, award-winning cavalry historian Eric J. Wittenberg provides a long-overdue challenge to the persistent myths that have unfairly elevated the reputations of the Confederate cavalry’s “cavaliers” and sets the record straight regarding the evolution of the Union cavalry corps. He highlights the careers of renowned Federal officers, including George Stoneman, William W. Averell, Alfred Pleasonton, John Buford, and Wesley Merritt, as well as such lesser-known characters as Col. Alfred Duffie, a French expatriate who hid an ugly secret. Wittenberg writes a lively, detailed account of a saber-slashing era in which men fought for duty, honor, and bragging rights. Indeed, a taunting note left behind by Confederate Brig. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee on a raid at Hartwood Church, Virginia, in 1863 sparked Northern retaliation at the Battle of Kelly’s Ford. The Federal cavalry then evolved during the trials of Stoneman’s Raid, with their hard work culminating in the Battle of Brandy Station, where they nearly broke the unsuspecting Confederates in a fourteen-hour maelstrom that is considered the greatest cavalry battle ever fought in North America.

A skillfully woven overview, this unforgettable story also depicts the strategic and administrative tasks that occupied officers and politicians as well as the day-to-day existence of the typical trooper in the field. The Union Cavalry Comes of Age shows that Northern troopers began turning the tide of the war much earlier than is generally acknowledged and became the largest, best-mounted, and best-equipped force of horse soldiers the world had ever seen. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Few Observations.
This is a well written and exhaustively researched book covering an important period of time for the Union Cavalry.
I have but one minor complaint. I am probably the only person on the planet who would take exception to the phrase; "Keenan`s Charge."My great grandfather, Major, later Colonel and Bvt. Brig. General Pennock Huey, was the officer who, when surprised by Jackson`s troops, gave the order to "Draw sabres and charge", which was repeated by Major Keenan who was killed in the "Charge of the Eighth Pennsylvania Cavalry" at Chancellorsville.Due to the vainglorious imagination and outright lies of Gen. Alfred Pleasonton and his later testimony at hearings on the conduct of the war, Keenan was credited with having been ORDERED to charge Jackson`s troops when, in fact, the entire action was an unfortunate accident from which the only method of extrication was to "charge".
Mr. Wittenberg gets it right in his text but still refers to the incident as "Keenan`s Charge".Fact is, as I was told by my grandfather, HIS father never referred to it as ANYONE`S charge; just the "Charge of the Eighth Pennsylvania Cavalry."The phrase: "Keenan`s Charge", as well as the two execrable songs of the same title, should be consigned to the ash can of history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Well Done!
Union Cavalry Comes of Age: Hartwood Church to Brandy Station, 1863 is a detailed examination of the evolution or "coming of age" of the Union cavalry during the American Civil War.Conventional historical wisdom states that the Union cavalry was not an effective force until after the Battle of Gettysburg.Furthermore, the Confederacy has often been portrayed as possessing the "natural" cavalrymen, while the Union supposedly had to turn merchants and mechanics into horsemen. The author, Eric J. Wittenberg, argues that, on the contrary, the Union possessed skilled and knowledgeable cavalrymen from the beginning of the war.The relative ineffectiveness of the Union cavalry in the Eastern Theater during the first two years of the war, he argues, should be attributed to poor organizational decisions by the early commanders of the Army of the Potomac.Wittenberg believes that it was the distribution of the Union cavalry in separate regiments and brigades, rather than the unified structure used by the Army of Northern Virginia, that led to its ineffectiveness.

Wittenberg has established a solid reputation as the author or editor of several other works on the Union cavalry during the Civil War, including most importantly: Protecting the Flanks: The Battles for Brinkerhoff's Ridge and East Cavalry Field, Battle of Gettysburg, July 2-3, 1863 (Ironclad Publishing, 2002) and Gettysburg's Forgotten Cavalry Actions (Thomas Publications, 1998, and winner of the 1998 Bachelder-Coddington Literary Award).Union Cavalry Comes of Age is organized into nine chapters, which offer a chronological history of the Union cavalry from the formation of the Cavalry Corps, Army of the Potomac, in February 1863 to the Battle of Brandy Station in June 1863.Wittenberg also focuses on the careers of several Union prominent cavalry officers, including George Stoneman, William W. Averell, Alfred Pleasonton, John Buford, and Wesley Merritt.

Wittenberg has produced a well-written and researched volume that goes a long way toward dispelling myths regarding the Union cavalry. The volume includes more than 1000 endnotes, a 21-page bibliography, and five appendixes containing the orders of battle for cavalry forces at Fredericksburg, Kelly's Ford, Stoneman's Raid, Alsop's Field, and Brandy Station.I highly recommend this volume to those individuals interested in the Civil War and/or horse cavalry.

Learning to ride could be the sub title of this book. The Union Cavalry had many handicaps at the start of the American Civil War and that was only one of them.Trapped by official disapproval and high command's indifference the cavalry had real problems. This is the story of the journey from ugly stepchild to equal on the field of battle. At the start of the war, official Union policy refused to raise volunteer cavalry regiments. The existing Regular U.S. Army Cavalry would be able to perform all the duties required and the government had no need to incur the additional expenses.Late to the field, badly trained and saddled with a tactical doctrine that guaranteed failure the cavalry endured and learned. In 1863, the Cavalry fought the Cavaliers of the Army of Northern Virginia to a stand still at Brandy Station. This is the story of the two years of abuse and misused that plagued them.Even more, it is the story of the AOP's Cavalry growing and developing their role in the winning of the war. This is first of a series of excellent book on the Union Cavalry by Eric J. Wittenberg. This book builds a solid foundation that will help the reader understand the real price of victory in 1865.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding cavalry title by solid writer
Is it fun to read about the cavaliers in Gray? Sure. Was the Union cavalry really as inept and pathetic as we have been led to believe? Not a chance, at least according to historian of the blue horse Eric Wittenberg, who sets up and knocks apart just about every falsehood, half-truth and myth that has popped over over the last century and fifty odd years.

Wittenberg explains how the Union arm evolved, and explains the careers of a wide variety of officers, including prominent ppersonalities like Alfred Pleasonton, George Stoneman, John Buford, Wesley Merritt, and William W. Averell, and many lesser known commanders. He also explains how these officers, in camp and in battle, developed the Federal horse arm into a force to be reckoned with--and one that eventually ran circles around the Southern horsemen. One of the high points of the Union cavalry experience was at Brandy Station during the opening phase of the Gettsburg Campaign, and as one might expect, the author expends substantial ink writing about it. Although he does not appear to add anything new here, he does explain it from a different perspective, and that is refreshing. Brandy Station made it clear the blue horse was coming of age, but the author makes a good case it was sooner and stronger than most have heretofore acknowledged.

Wittenberg's writing is solid (not brilliant, but workmanlike and thorough). Based upon a wide variety of firsthand and secondary sources, the book adds something worthwhile to the voluminous literature, which one cannot is hardpressed to say about most of the books published these days. Much of this value is that the author explains why the Union cavalry improved in leadership and ability, and how its role evolved from 1861 to 1863, and then again to the end of the war. Though not a big fan of Brassey line, this title is one of their better releases. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much-needed, very well researched
If you are a Cavalry afficianado, or simply want to expand your knowledge of the American Civil War, you must have this book.Equisitely researched and documented, Eric shows his intimate familiarity with the Union cavalry during the war. Many sections of the book fill in gaps previously unaddressed by any other work.
The year 1863 was inarguably the most important watershed era for Union Cavalry, which began to improve to a point at which they began to surpass their Confederate counterparts in leadership, ability, and cohesiveness. The Union horsemen's prowess, beginning in 1863, as a unified fighting arm drastically contrasts with their use as couriers and body guards for the infantry during the first two years of the war.Eric wonderfully explains both how and why the changes began and developed in this work.
This book needs to be consulted along with any other work on Union Cavalry in the Civil War, and deserves a place on the bookshelf of anyone interested in gaining well-rounded knowledge not only of the cavalry, but of both armies' operations in the first half of 1863. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jackass Brandy Delivers a Kick to Readers
"Jackass Brandy" is a book that will be of particular delight to Northern Californians or students of California's more recent history.

Bruno Buti, through witness and participant interviews, coupledwith his own recollections from childhood, paints a very interesting andoften humorous account of the effect Prohibition had in California's SanFrancisco Bay Area.

The story is based on the true experiences of MichaelButi and details his efforts in attempting to run a moonshining operationin the San Francisco East Bay community of Castro Valley. The cat and mousegames of the Federal Revenue Agents is interesting and often amusing.Lessamusing is the level of corruption found in the various levels of lawenforcement bureaucracy.

"Jackass" was the nickname of theparticular form of liquor distilled throughout the area as opposed to themore familiar terms "white lightning" or "moonshine"popularized in similar operations in the American South.

"JackassBrandy" is entertaining and colorul, while filling in important bitsof San Francisco Bay Area history. It's a good read! ... Read more
