Product Description
This sweeping popular history is the unflinching story of one of America s most fascinating cities. Brad R. Tuttle's illustrated account is fresh and honest a critical tale that does not shy away from Newark's sometime seedy past. From its abrupt and steady decline following WWII to today's more hopeful future spurned on by a new real estate market and a growing population, How Newark Became Newark follows well-known and long-forgotten characters and significant events embodying the overall rise, fall, and rebirth of New Jersey's biggest city. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Newark Worts and All
I was born and raised in Newark. While I haven't lived there in years my heart will always be with the Brick City. This book is a terrific account of my town from its historical roots to the present. I loved it! A real page turner. Nothing was sugar coated. He wrote in great detail of the graft and corruption that did serious damage to Newark.

If there's a silver lining it's current Mayor Cory Booker. He details his rise to power and the challenges he overcame to be elected. My heart goes out in particular to the school kids of Newark. They deserve a quality education. That's one area that still needs a great deal of attention.

The writer did a magnificent job making Newark's history come alive. Even if you're not from my hometown, this is a message of hope. Newark is coming back and I couldn't be happier!

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweeping history
This is history told in the style of fine magazine reportage. It's
like watching a parade of eccentric characters in American life, as rich
as a great novel.

Tuttle doesn't engage in "counter-factual historicizing." In other words, he doesn't guess at what might have happened if citizens had done things differently. Yet one of the thrills of his book is that he reveals many of the city's missed chances.

Newark could have dodged several bullets along the way. For example, there was a mistaken willingness by politicians to shrink Newark's tax base by allowing sections to secede. There was also the failure to create public parks, which had (somewhat surprising) side-effects.

While the news Tuttle tells is often sad, his book is more inspiring than not. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rising Star
Brad Tuttle's, How Newark Became Newark The Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of an American City, is mesmerizing from paragraph one. Mr. Tuttle brings an entirely new approach to history writing. His telling of the story of Newark in an enjoyable, delectable way, his obvious serious research, his insights concerning History's importance for today, his refreshingly unbiased, not slanted relating of the facts as a coherent whole have brought University level historical research into the mainstream.I cannot praise enough Mr. Tuttle's mastery over written English and his ability to make dead bones come alive for the average reader like myself.I look foward to reading more from this author who displays rare literary genius and promise of being one the great authors of our "times".

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Jerseyans, Newarkers and Urbanites in general
FIVE STARS!My original review accidentally showed four stars and I can't edit stars so I am adding this to say it's FIVE STARS!
This is a book you won't put down after cracking open its spine: a rich, balanced, informative and surprisingly easy read of the history of Newark from its humble beginnings, through its many challenges, to its present and hopeful future.Tuttle brings his strong journalist's background and investigative skills to bear, leaving few, if any, stones unturned in writing this comprehensive story of Newark.
I can't wait to read this new and refreshingly talented author's next book! ... Read more
