Product Description
Some people are compulsive writers of letters to the newspapers. The same names appear repeatedly on the op-ed pages. Emeritus Professor Robert Burns is one such individual. Even though he tries to avoid the most controversial issues, he eventually steps on someone's toes who strikes back at him for his remarks. Interwoven with the story are discussions of such diverse subjects as English grammar, ecology, the metric system, gardening, fishing, and bird watching, as well as a healthy dose of humor.Although it has been said that there are no new stories left to tell, this one might just qualify. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars masterpiece to learn booker's style
a must have if you want to learn the rich and complex booker style. Joshua Paxton's job with these transcriptions is just perfect!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Transcriptions
This is a marvellous volume of Piano Transcriptions by the late James Booker. Booker was one of the great New Orleans pianists, who was able to play classical music as well as New Orleans Piano.

These transcriptions are tough to play, mainly because Booker had a number of unique left hand patterns that he used that are very difficult to play correctly and smoothly. Some of the performances are vocal and Piano. However unlike some sheet music books the vocal line is printed separately and Bookers unqiue accompaniments are shown complete in both the right and left hand.

The transcriptions are:

Junco Partner
Come Rain or Come Shine
Medley: Blues Minuet/ It will have to do until the real thing comes along/baby won't you please come home
Gonzo's Blue Dream
Let's Make a better World
Papa was a Rascal
Pixie
Pop's Dilemma
Put out the light
Tell me how do you feel

All of the performances are available on CD - mainly on Junco Partner (Hannibal HNCD 1359), which itself is a brilliant solo recording by Booker.

5-0 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE!!!!
If you are a boogie woogie and blues fan and/or player, you should definetly get this book. its the only sheet music of james booker out there! It is advanced but worth the time to learn some songs. must buy! ... Read more

Product Description

This autobiography of a slave’s rise to distinction asserts that a strong work ethic and excellence in whatever one is doing will be rewarded no matter what race or what position a person holds in life. As far as Washington was concerned, slavery only made the black person stronger. He argued that both blacks and whites would benefit more from giving blacks vocational training than from encouraging the “craze for Greek & Latin learning.” While this set him at odds with other black leaders of his time, such as W.E. B. Du Bois, it also set the groundwork for Washington’s Tuskegee Institute to be the best-funded black educational institution of its era.
Amazon.com Review
Nineteenth-century African American businessman, activist, andeducator Booker Taliaferro Washington's Up from Slavery is oneof the greatest American autobiographies ever written. Its mantras ofblack economic empowerment, land ownership, and self-help inspiredgenerations of black leaders, including Marcus Garvey, ElijahMuhammad, Malcolm X, and Louis Farrakhan. In rags-to-riches fashion,Washington recounts his ascendance from early life as a mulatto slavein Virginia to a 34-year term as president of the influential, agriculturally based Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. From thatposition, Washington reigned as the most important leader of hispeople, with slogans like "cast down your buckets," which emphasizedvocational merit rather than the academic and political excellencechampioned by his contemporary rival W.E.B. Du Bois. Though manyconsidered him too accommodating to segregationists, Washington, as hesaid in his historic "Atlanta Compromise" speech of 1895, believedthat "political agitation alone would not save [the Negro]," and that"property, industry, skill, intelligence, and character" would provenecessary to black Americans' success. The potency of his philosophiesare alive today in the nationalist and conservative camps that composethe complex quilt of black American society. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read
I read this book with my 12 year old as part of a book club.I didn't know much about Booker T. Washington, and this book was very interesting. He was truly a remarkable man living in a time of extreme change for our country.I feel I now have a broader view of the post slavery South then I had, even growing up there.

5-0 out of 5 stars He Knew His Role and Performed It Well...
A fascinating read about the life and times of Booker T. Washington and his march from slavery to one of the foremost men of his time.

His views may seem quite antiquated in today's world, given what has happened and not happened in the last 100 years in race relations and it is easy to see how Black leaders of today might be critical of Washington's views and perspectives.

But to do so would be to make the all too common mistake of imprinting and transferring today's value system and experiences on a culture and time of long ago. Anyone can look back with 20-20 hindsight and criticize. What matters most is having a plan to move forward from where you are, and Booker T. Washington certainly had that. His is a remarkable story of courage, grace, and iron-willed determination, for himself and forhis race.

While today's leaders and purists might criticize Washington, it should never be forgotten that he took the first steps and led his race and the entire South in the first steps, no matter how imperfect they may be in hindsight, up and away from slavery.

There had to be a Booker T. Washington to bridge the gap between what was and what was to be.He knew his role and peformed it well.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Hero
Up From Slavery Booker T. Washington has been one of my all-time favorite American heroes -- ever since I first read about him in 4th grade.Washington had a gift for writing, and his autobiography, as well as his essays, are very easy to read, understand, and enjoy. The more I study and learn about him, the more impressed I am with his vision, his integrity, and his drive to improve his people and their lot in life.

4-0 out of 5 stars up from slavery
a good read with much information from the early america era. Booker T. Washington use the brain over violence and suceeded where others failed. excellent read.!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars No Less Than an American Classic!
What an outstanding autobiography regarding a true American heroe! This book details the triumphant acts of Booker T. Washington's efforts to not only develop the famous Tuskegee Institute, but to positively build bridges with America.A former slave who became a self taught, political mastermind came from the worst of what humanity had to offer to meeting and influencing American Presidents. What an honor it would have been to meet a man who provided so much to the African American man and woman. He was also willing and often did help southern whites in his community. It's ashame that in America, where education is offered legally, there is a 50% dropout rate among African American high school students. This man and his "cadres" fought for and provided educational opportunities in a country that treated them worst than second class citizens. This book should be a required reading in ALL schools, especially those predominantly filled with African Americans! ... His birth date is disputed, given as July 4, July 10, and July 23, in the years 1908, 1909, or 1910. He died on January 21, 1992. His father was from the Belgian Congo and his mother was part African American and Cherokee . He was orphaned at the age of 2 and sent to the New Orleans Home for Colored Waifs (also the alma mater of Louis Armstrong ). He taught himself piano there and later apprenticed with Tuts Washington and Willie Hall , whom he called his 'father' and from whom he learned "Junker's Blues". He was also "spy boy" for the Yellow Pochahantas tribe of Mardi Gras Indians and soon began playing in barrelhouses and other drinking establishments. Product Description
It is late winter in central Europe, far from the fighting in the Holy Land. Two monks find an orphaned female child near starvation and rescue her. For lack of an alternative, they and their five monastic brothers become her surrogate parents. When it becomes evident that the child is exceptionally intelligent, each of the seven teaches her his specialty, thus providing her with a most unusual education. This develops into a paradoxical situation in which the most brilliant member of the community is one who, by all odds, should have remained illiterate and inconsequential. The story is set during the Crusades with frequent reminders of events unfolding in the larger world. ... Read more

Product Description
Suspended for punching out a low-life pimp, disillusioned by a judicial system that sets criminals free more often than a reasonable person could comprehend, Chicago vice cop M.H. Wagner finds himself at a crossroads that pits his deeply held values against an overwhelming sense of helplessness. In Nothing Rhymes with Justice, author J.A. Booker explores Wagner's struggle. Recruited by a highly secretive, well-organized vigilante group that dispenses its own unique justice, Wagner embarks on a series of clandestine missions that utilize his military police and law enforcement training in unorthodox ways. In a manner befitting his unique wit, Booker ends Part 1 with a sharp turn, taking the reader by surprise. Part 2 picks up Wagner's story thirty years later. Now a retired college professor living in Seattle, Wagner is once again presented with an opportunity to mete out a form of justice not condoned by the still-flawed legal system. Partnering with a computer-savvy ex-government employee, Wagner and his cohorts venture into the world of high finance, becoming modern versions of Robin Hood. The story ends with another twist, once again reinforcing the notion that nothing rhymes with justice. ... Read more

UP FROM SLAVERY

The autobiography of Booker T Washington is a startling portrait ofone of the great Americans of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The illegitimate son of 'a white man and a Negro slave, Washington, a man who struggled for his education, would go on to struggle for the dignity of all his people in a hostile and alien society.

THE SOULS OF BLACK FOLK

W.E.B. DuBois's classic is a major sociological document and one of the momentous books in the mosaic of American literature. No other work has had greater influence on black thinking, and nowhere is the African-American's unique heritage and his kinship with all men so passionately described.

THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF AN EX-COLORED MAN

Originally published anonymously, James Weldon Johnson's penetrating work is a remarkable human account of the life of black Americans in the early twentieth century and a profound interpretation of his feelings towards the white man and towards members of his own race. No other book touches with such understanding and objectivity on the phenomenon once called "passing" in a white society.

These three narratives, gathered together in Three Negro Classics chronicle the remarkable evolution of African-American consciousness on both a personal and social level. Profound, intelligent, and insightful, they are as relevant today as they have ever been.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mission Accomplished!
I gave each book three stars.I am glad I read them, but I wasn't particularly excited over any. However, they all deserved to be read.

Up From Slavery was a book I had on my list for years.

The Souls of Black Folk is my second time reading it.It was torture.Dubios writing style is laborious, pretentious and too wordy. He is trying too hard to impress white folk.I am not a fan of Dubois.I find him annoying, condescending and disdainful of Black folk. For me he is an outsider looking into the lives of the Black masses.

I kept going back forth to "he is making me sick to he's making some sense here."When he stuck with history, I was cool with him.

I don't believe in the talented tenth. I believe that each man and woman is there own Moses. However, I do agree with the idea of living within the veil, and that the problem of the 21st century will be the color line.

Up From Slavery is another book that was written for whites. I don't appreciate Mr. Washington. His philosophy did not hold up to the realties of his time.

What struck me mostly is his relationship to his sister. He tells us that he helped to educate his brother at Hampton and his Foster brother, but he never mentioned what he did for his sister.

I also could not keep up with his wives.I am glad that I read each book, but I doubt I will read any of them again during my life time.

This book is a must read for anyone who is interested in African American history.I wish more educators (and politicians for that matter!) today had the same approach as Booker T. Washington.

Excerpt: Booker Thomas Spicely (December 1, 1909 - July 8, 1944) was a victim of racial violence whose murder is considered to be one event in a series of events that contributed to the Civil Rights movement, much like when Irene Morgan (also in July, 1944) was arrested and jailed in Virginia for refusing to give up her seat on an interstate bus to a white person, or when Emmett Till was murdered by two white men in Mississippi in 1955. Spicely was born in Blackstone, Virginia, to Lazarus and Alberta Spicely. He attended two years of high school. He apparently worked as an assistant business manager at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama before volunteering for the United States Army on December 31, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His serial number was 33809308, and he was trained as a cook. In 1944, Private Spicely was stationed at Camp Butner, North Carolina. While on a pass into the nearby city of Durham on July 8, 1944, he boarded a bus with a black family he was talking to at the bus stop, and sat in the front row behind the driver. The driver told them to go to the back of the bus. The family did, but Spicely refused, saying that he was a soldier and that he was fighting in the war. Soon afterwards, several white soldiers boarded the bus, and attempted to persuade Spicely to move to the back of the bus. Again, he protested, saying that he wore the same uniform as them and that he shouldnt have to move seats. Spicely continued arguing with the bus driver until he departed the bus. When he did, the driver followed him off the bus and shot Spicely twice when Spicely turned around. His cause of death is listed as homicide ("...http://booksllc.net/?id=12094036 ... Read more
