Cornell or Kessinger?You decide!
Minor but enjoyable Victorian narrative poetry on geographically and historically exotic themes, mostly based (at least ostensibly) on Near Eastern legends, and largely concerned with a tender exploration of the amorous vicissitudes of Adam and Eve (lovingly depicted in the nude, even after the explusion from Eden).Illustrated primarily by Louis Fairfax-Muckley, who also did an illustrated edition of Spenser's "Faerie Queene" at about the same time (good luck trying to get a look at that rare edition, which is what I would really have liked to see reprinted!).I enjoyed both the verse and the woodcuts quite a bit more than I expected to.Two recent inexpensive reprints are available.If you are interested in text and illustrations equally, or primarily in the text, the Kessinger edition is the way to go, because at least three pages of text are simply missing from the Cornell edition, at least in my copy.On the other hand, the Cornell edition does include all the illustrations, and in it the reproduction of both text and illustrations is appreciably sharper and cleaner than in the sometimes slightly muddy Kessinger edition--though the latter is certainly very serviceable for both text and illustrations in its own right.Fringilla: Some Tales in Verse [ 1895 ]Fringilla: Some Tales In Verse (1895) ...
