A History of Blacks in Kentucky traces the role of blacks from the early exploration and settlement of Kentucky to 1891, when African Americans gained freedom only to be faced with a segregated society. Making extensive use of numerous primary sources such as slave diaries, Freedmen’s Bureau records, church minutes, and collections of personal papers, the book tells the stories of individuals, their triumphs and tragedies, and their accomplishments in the face of adversity. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Super Reader
Adaptation, and that is about that. However, it was decently done, and I am sure most people are familiar with the story. Archaelogist-pulp hero finds an old flame and must save the world from nazis attempting to put the Ark of the Covenant to evil ends.

4-0 out of 5 stars Far better than it has to be
I expect film novelizations to be dull and badly written, following the movie line for line and not adding anything new. The novelization for "Raiders of the Lost Ark" by Campbell Black is interesting and memorable. He adds a lot that is not in the movie, and it gives all the characters, especially Marion Ravenwood and Deitrich, a lot more depth. Campbell Black is an amazingly talented and restrained writer. His style is almost Hemingway-esque. Most impressive. It's definetly a worthy read if you're fan of the movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars I was brought up on the movie....
To me Indiana Jones is Harrison Ford, brown leather, and fedora.
When reading the book, i kept replaying the movie in my head of that scene.

Nevertheless, reading this book, I do recommend. It'll fill in gaps that the movie missed, and like all books will paint a much bigger picture that does a movie.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dusty relic
I can accept a film novelisation which differs, sometimes radically, from the motion picture, but the adaptation of "Raiders" changes one rather important element: excitement. The first Indiana Jones film is a roaring B-movie, packed with adventure and thrills, albeit at the expense of any real depth (which is unsurprising when you consider the source material). This book is a shallow plodder, crippled by the author's remarkable inability to describe an action scene. Considering that there is little else in the plot that's a major handicap. Descriptions are confusing, unimaginative and fleetingly terse, while the attempts to flesh out motivations and characters are sporadic and seem incomplete. Several of the best moments in the film are missing here, which may disappoint fans, but to my mind the fault with this book is not that it fails to either represent or add to the movie, but that it's a scrappy bit of hack work in its own right. Not the best of the three movie novelisations, by a long chalk.

1-0 out of 5 stars This "book" should be turned into a pillar of salt, & smited
There are some good films made from bad novels and some bad films made from good novels, but the only thing that you can hope for from a novelization based on a screenplay is that it will fill in where the film left off, describing things that went by in a flash that maybe you wanted to spend some more time with.Raiders gives you nothing more than what you saw in the movie and sometimes considerably less. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Racism is still Real
This book chronicles the experience of a black man who is a priest in a church that is White. While the book is somewhat dated today, it still captures the racism that is faced by black Catholics in a church that is still mostly White. This book would invite you to ponder on the possibility of being black and Catholic. The book is easy to read and the author is transparent as he shares his feelings. The book needs a revision. ... Excerpt: Mae Carol Jemison (born October 17, 1956) is an African American physician and NASA astronaut. She became the first African American woman to travel in space when she went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on September 12, 1992. Mae Carol Jemison was born in Decatur, Alabama, the youngest child of Charlie Jemison and Dorothy Green. Her father was a maintenance supervisor for a charity organization, and her mother worked most of her career as an elementary school teacher of English and math at the Beethoven School in Chicago. The family moved to Chicago, Illinois, when Jemison was three years old, to take advantage of better educational opportunities there. Jemison says that as a young girl growing up in Chicago she always assumed she would get into space. "I thought, by now, we'd be going into space like you were going to work." She said it was easier to apply to be a shuttle astronaut, "rather than waiting around in a cornfield, waiting for ET to pick me up or something." As a child growing up, Jemison learned to make connections to science by studying nature. "It sounds a little gross, but I was fascinated with pus," Jemison said. Once when a splinter infected her thumb as a little girl, Jemison's mother turned it into a learning experience. She ended up ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=201525 ... Read more

Product Description
The Black and White house in Singapore is the most distinctive and imposing of the island's colonial architectural legacy. Surviving examples are testament to their physical and aesthetic durability - a unique tropical style with a colorful pedigree of architectural influences. Today these beautiful houses continue to serve their original purpose as gracious family homes but with others successfully adapted as restaurants, offices and artisan's studios. Written and photographed with flair and admiration, "Black and White" traces their evolution through the architects and practices that designed them - houses as relevant today as when they first appeared over a 100 years ago. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars don't bother
Don't bother. It's a very amateurish piece. It sounds like it was written for a writing class, with the author using his thesaurus to try to impress the teacher and fellow students. Trying to be too cute, and too clever, the author comes across as neither.

1-0 out of 5 stars I Don't Recommend It...It's Just Plain Bad
I thought I'd buy this book and have a fun read about a young man getting trapped in the dark side of a tortured man's life. Nope. It started off pretty good and then ended abruptly in one chapter. I finished this book feeling completely disappointed. I thought there would be alot more to it. The book sets you up for the young man to be dragged into a world completely unlike his. That happens for about four pages and that's it. I regret spending $10 on this. I could have put my money to better use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gay coming of age fiction written with style and flair
"The Boy With Black Eyes" is tremendously well-written, with a style and flair not often seen in gay coming of age fiction. The almost constant choice of rarely used words combined with an orgy or alliteration make for a fascinating read. This is not so much a novel but a novella. And the suspense based on the title builds to the very last chapter. Just a warning: The descriptions I read of the novel beforehand made the ultimate subject of the book sound literally lethal, and it's not. But it is most heinous and sad. This is a great novella about lust and obsession, and what it can do to change a person in dangerous ways.

1-0 out of 5 stars I Want My Money Back/Don't Waste Your Money
I have nothing against Bryan Lucas...don't know the guy, but cummon! This book is just plain awful and if the rating schedule had allowed me to give it negative-five-stars, I would have quickly and gladly done so.
While I admire the author's attempt to tell a tale, the book is melodramatic, at best-much too "Turn your composition in by Tuesday, or get an F."
If that isn't bad enough Chapter 14 and 15 are actually one chapter-add insult to injury and the break in chapters is in the middle of a sentence! Isn't that what Editors are for? In reading this book, it is clear there was NO Editor.
This book remindeds me of the first gay themed movies, where the film would end and you thought the film makers ran out of money and just stopped shooting-you felt robbed of your interest in a story that had no real ending and most importantly robbed of your time.
To be just plain blunt, save your money and your time and skip over this book-it's none of the good things people write about it, which leads me to wonder how they are connected to the Author. More disturbingly, in looking at the book, the story and the contents over all, it lends concern to either people who publish their books themselves and manage to get a bunch of "great reviews" so they can sell their drivel, or writers who know all the right people to sleep with to get their "term papers" published. Either is unacceptable and should be punishable by imprisonment. It's likened to just right out stealing my money. I would have rather given the money to a stranger on the street than to waste it on something I can't even burn in the fireplace.
Probably worse of all, the story gives gay youth a bad name. The character, which without question was the Author at that same age is young and horny and thinks sex is love-I don't recall making that mistake in my youth. Then suddenly in the story-BOOM-out of nowhere, your drawn into this deep poetic style of ramble that leads you to believe the boy was raped-puhlease! Add to it the repeated nastiness about the only girl in the book being fat and the story is just offensive. Mr. Lucas couldn't have made it any clearer that he HATES fat people-gee, what a lovely picture to paint of gay youth! I mean cummon...if he was merely wanting to describe that the girl was fat, he could have simply said so, but he's gone on and on and on with some rather interesting descriptive words to convey his repulsion of the girls weight. But then again, Mr. Lucas rambles on endlessly about so much in this book, it all just kinda becomes a blur.
May I suggest you all do some real reading-Anything by Michael Thomas Ford has been delightful and well written and Andre Aciman's "Call Me By Your Name" is one of the most touching books I've read in a very long time.
Those who gave this book 5-Stars HAD to be paid by the publisher or Amazon to give a good review to boost sales or know the Author personally. If not, then you dudes need to either get out more or read more. I can't understand how you thought "Black Eyes" was entertaining, much less a good book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice try... but not really
As one of the other posters has already mentioned, I bought the book as a hopeful alleviation to the boredom of a plane ride.I expected sheer genius from the onslaught of recommendations and reviews plastered all over the website, but instead I found a weakly constructed piece. While I'm sure it took Lucas a good deal of effort to bring up horrid memories of the past, it is something we all have and I see no reason that this story should stand above any other romantic disaster.

Overall, there were a few minor interesting pages, the whole of it seemed like it was roughly glued together and stretched in a number of places to reach its rather short 116 pages which as already mentioned was achieved through some creative organization of fonts and chapter titles. ... Sir," ho said, " I take stock in everything that concerns anybody."Mrs. Mainwarino, meanwhile, rumbling along in the closed carriage toward Slowby, was as unhappy as a person supported by a strong sense of accomplished duty can well be. The coachman's livery fitted excellently—it was quite pleasant to behold his back—the horses trotted cheerily along the broad high-road ; the country looked pretty in the afternoon sunshine; the shopkeepers iu Slowby, moreover, would hurry with unfeigned satisfaction to their doors, anxious to supply any quantity of any article that Mrs. Mainwaring might desire, when they saw her carriage stopping in High Street. All these things were wont to yield her a gentle sense of gratification, for, notwithstanding her traditions, Mrs. Mainwaring was fundamentally a very simple-minded person. She enjoyed her own respectable and dignified position, and still more she enjoyed the recognition of her respectability and dignity by others. It is distinctly agreeable to be persuaded that the world in general shares in our own good opinion of ourselves. To-day the worthy lady ought, surely, to have felt even more than usually serene and satisfied, for she had got her own way. She knew that, after their late conversation, Elizabeth's pride would prevent her making anymore inconvenient suggestions respecting a visit froii the Frank Lorimers. Mrs. Mainwaring had fought and won the little battle very successfully. She had her desire ; but, alas ! together with her desire, she had leanness withal in her soul. She believed, and rightly, that she loved Elizabeth more truly than she loved any other human being except her husband, Gerald Mainwaring ; but Mrs. Main- waring was not a very acute thinker, and had never perceived that she loved, not Elizab... ...
