Product Description
To their disadvantage, few Americans--and few in higher education--know much about the successes of historically Black colleges and universities.

How is it that historically Black colleges graduate so many low-income and academically poorly prepared students? How do they manage to do so well with students "as they are", even when adopting open admissions policies?

In this volume, contributors from a wide spectrum of Black colleges offer insights and examples of the policies and practice--such as retention strategies, co-curricular activities and approaches to mentoring--which underpin their disproportionate success with populations that too often fail in other institutions.

This book also challenges the myth that these colleges are segregated institutions and that teachers of color are essential to minority student success. HBCUs employ large numbers of non-Black faculty who demonstrate the ability to facilitate the success of African American students.

This book offers valuable lessons for faculty, faculty developers, student affairs personnel and administrators in the wider higher education community–lessons that are all the more urgent as they face a growing racially diverse student population.

While, for HBCUs themselves, this book reaffirms the importance of their mission today, it also raises issues they must address to maintain the edge they have achieved.

4-0 out of 5 stars Short but good
I love Karen Harper. She provides a great story and wonderful character interaction...she is also one of the few authors I can safely give to my mom to read. :)

3-0 out of 5 stars Well written with a good storyline
Harper's Black Orchid seems well research. I had a hard time putting the book down. Some interesting twists. I'll certainly consider reading another Karen Harper book.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK
HAD ME HOOKED & VERY SUSPENCEFUL. EXCELLENT CONDITION. LOVE HARPERS STYLE OF WRITING.

3-0 out of 5 stars More like three and a 1/2 stars
I won't describe the plot because I think the literary summary says it all. Instead, I will only state my opinions about Black Orchid. I wasn't exactly sure if this book would appeal to me after reading the back of the jacket cover, but I have enjoyed Karen Harper's books in the past, so I picked it up on sale anyway and gave it a try. It was a fast read that held my interest throughout most of the story line. A few of the Seminole aspects were a bit confusing at first, due to the lack of description or explanation. There were plenty of suspects which kept the suspense building until the end. Although predictable for me, it may not be for most readers. Including the twist. The romance was adequate for a romantic suspense where the suspense is more prevalent than the romance, but the author had built up the idea for a great deal of tension and passion between the main characters and then let it all fizzle out.

Is it worth buying?
Perhaps. Look for it on sale or check it out from the library if you can. However, it most likely is not a book you will cherish, or even remember after some time and therefore not worth keeping stored away with other thrilling reads.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great storyline!
I really enjoyed reading this book.Jordon and Seth were interesting characters, and I enjoyed the fact that they were able to find eachother again after all those years and fall in love again. ... Read more

THE IRREVERENT, EYE-OPENING, AND HILARIOUS BOOK THAT DARES TO ASK...

Why do so many high-profile black men date and marry the most ordinary white women?

Why do so many other black men desire and covet the company of white women?

And why does this subject deeply touch so many people of both races?

Are these provocative questions matters of love, sex, revenge, power, or politics? All of the above, asserts Rajen Persaud in this illuminating, no-holds-barred book that will have you laughing with recognition while fundamentally changing the way you see just about everything -- from sex and marriage to your own gender and race in all its foibles, pretensions, and ultimate possibilities.

Challenging every one of our preconceptions about mixed-race relationships, Rajen Persaud's commentary lights up a topic that has only deepened in intensity and relevance in the decades since Sidney Poitier asked the world "Guess who's coming to dinner?" The answers, so deeply ingrained in our fabric as a nation and even grounded in our past, force us to look at ourselves and our culture with new eyes while pondering matters of

CELEBRITY: From Michael Jordan to Bryant Gumbel to Tiger Woods, high-profile affairs and marriages with no shortage of controversy.

SEX: Are black men choosing white women -- or rejecting black women?

RACE: How white male insecurity is the key to understanding racism.

RELATIONSHIPS: Is it more than love that brings the races together?

POLITICS: How fear is used to gain power, from sexual politics to global war.

MEDIA: How movies and television keep black men running to white women.

...and much more. Get ready for Why Black Men Love White Women -- and finally understand the relationship phenomenon of our times. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ouch! This book hurts but in a good way.
I'm not surprised by the backlash this book has caused. The truth hurts and the author is holding nothing back. He takes a neutral stance and merely presents the facts, many of which are uncomfortable. One that stuck out clearly is black men who choose to become effeminate in order to eliminate any white threat, and better assimilate themselves from the burden of black responsibility. "In his mind (the black male) he is no longer black and can socially complement himself with a mate that mirrors his mindset" As a black male myself I witness this sort of thing everyday. The author also speaks of the devastation created in families when a lighter child is treated better than a sibling and the self hatred this creates. He speaks of the sad self hatred so many blacks have against one another, it's causes, and the result it has on black families. Divide and rule racism that was once used against slaves but now used against one another. Last but not least the awful negative stereotypes many films and media continue to foster, and how many within the black community buy into it. I could go on and on. Overall The author is fearless in his writing, the book is both powerful, factual and informative, and Mr. Persaud is a intellectual force to be reckoned with.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book was ghostwritten by TV's George Jefferson....."whitey" hating crap
Maybe black men and white women just like each other. Much the same way that white men and asian women seem to. Maybe there arent sick evil honkey devil forces at work here. The hand of George Jefferson is all over this thing. I really expected her to have a chapter on "zebras" the unholy product of these unions. Yes the white man is out to destroy the black family and this ti me he is using the most tender of traps, white women. GROW UP its 2010 and people just mix it up these days. Deal with it. If you like old fashioned honkey hating drivel and have 12$ to spend on it then go for it.

1-0 out of 5 stars HE NEEDS THERAPY; AWFUL SPECULATION
Awful speculation on his part.Someone, somewhere, told him that this book would invoke some emotional response, and he gets off on invoking emotional responses, without really saying anything much at all.He appears to be UNSUCCESSFULLY working through the issues he has with Caucasian people, and with himself in this book, and his energy would be much better placed in him scheduling an appointment to work through his issues in therapy. In essence he is insulting women and in particular Caucasian women, by generalizing and minimizing relationships to some mere conversations he's had with some insecure and out of touch peers, girlfriends, or ex-girlfriends.Schedule the appointment, you really need it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading
In my practice, I have asked this question to many black men. What I get in response is; I want to steal the white mans women for payback,,white women are naive and fall for the BS that black women wont fall for,,,white women will work and bring us gifts thinking that we love them when we are sleeping with all of her friends,,,the system wants to destroy the black man by interbreeding,,,they are
the trophy, etc.... One thing the book is correct about,Hollywood is pushing race mixing; look at an Ad and you will see the black man and white female in the front while the white man is in the background.

4-0 out of 5 stars You'll Love it!! I did!
"Why Black Men love White Women" is an excellent book dealing with some of the deep seated issues that African Americans have towards one another due to the conditioning of Slavery, Jim Crow, the Media etc... I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone who is looking to explore these issues. He gives an excellent analysis of how Black people are portrayed in movies, in songs, literature etc. Its funny. Its sad. Its informative! It is definately a must read! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great seller, horrible book.
Vendor/seller was superb. Fast delivery, great condition that matched description. However, the book is really bad. Terrible writing, not as professional or polished as I'd expected. It's more gutter-street writing that tries too hard and fails miserably. Terrible book, in my opinion.

4-0 out of 5 stars It wasn't what I expected but very good....
Overall I really enjoyed the book. It brought to light on how I feel that most women should carry themselves. In some areas like on attitude of the lady should have been much more detailed. Some women won't get that concept or percieve what she is saying correctly without having proir knowledge of know how to carry themselves. To me you either have it or you don't but anyone can get to that point. Some of the sexual references and ideas were on point. Good Job Miss T! Looking for your next book!

3-0 out of 5 stars The Guide to Becoming the Sensuous Black Woman...
"Miss T." gives it to the ladies "straight with no chaser" in her manual, `The Guide To Becoming The Sensuous Black Woman'.This tip-filled manual unveils some sexual and erotic tips for women who want to not only become a sensual black woman, but to drive their man crazy in and out of the bedroom! "Miss T." begins by describing the qualities and characteristics of a sensuous black woman; full of confidence, attractive attitude, and body language that will lure a man from across the room to her like a moth to a flame.

This book unleashes some "classic" tips to even the most undesirable woman on how to hook a man like a fish; from putting a condom on using your mouth and perfecting the art of oral sex to masteringanal sex and performing a "hand job". On the positive side, `The Guide to Becoming The Sensuous Black Woman' is a reminder(if not a wakeup call to some) to black women that being sensuous starts with YOU; by exuding an air of self-confidence, tuning into your senses by performing various exercises recommended by "Miss T"." herself, toning your body, and maintaining a pleasurable and appealing attitude. On the negative side, this book lacked structure and read as if the reader were listening to someone lecture. Some of the information provided by "Miss T" might seem unhygienic to the average black woman; for instance placing a Lifesaver in the vagina for the purpose of oral sex and using alum to tighten the vaginal wall (which could lead to excessive dryness and a yeast infection if not used properly)."Miss T." makes a satisfactory approach to aiding black women in their quest to becoming sensuous and hooking a man, however, she loses the readers focus once she begins to venture into the materialistic gain of having a man; advising black women to not only search for athletes and music artists, which semi-contradicts the whole process of becoming a sensual black woman.Good read, but needs LOTS of improvement (spelling and grammatical errors throughout).

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding BBQ party book
This is one of the finest party cook books ever done. The reason is that it gives great ideas and then lists alternative choices of ingredients. It makes cooking flexible and fun. Adler and Fertig are wonderful in their presentations but this book is exceptional and full of fresh ideas and approaches to serving a real Bash!

5-0 out of 5 stars Make Your BBQ Party Perfect With The BBQ Queens
You gotta love the BBQ Queens Karen Adler and Judith Fertig! I first met Karen at the 2007 HPBA Expo in Reno, NV where I interviewed her for my podcast show and then I saw her again earlier this year at the 2008 HPBA Expo in Atlanta, Georgia. In that YouTube video I shot from this year's conference, she told me about this new book that was coming out and now it's here. If you like BBQ (and what low-carber DOESN'T?!), then you will enjoy this very colorful and loaded cookbook. Yes, there are a bunch of recipes (not all low-carb, but all super delicious!), but there are also tips about adding just a little something extra special to whatever party event you are having around the grill. If you wanna BBQ right, then you gotta trust the BBQ Queens. :D

5-0 out of 5 stars Lively BBQ Recipes for Summer
As always, you can count on Karen Adler and Judith Fertig(aka the Barbecue Queens)to remind you not to take cooking so seriously. You can have fun at the grill, and enjoy guests at the same time. The recipes in this latest romp through the back yard will allow you to do both. Some are fresh, some are tried and true, but all are well written, easy to follow and won't have you scanning weird markets to find obscure ingredients for esoteric dishes. In other words, you can find what you need at your neighborhood Kroger or Safeway to serve up dishes from this book, touted as "The Be-All End-All Party Guide, from Barefoot to Black Tie". My only exception to this cookbook is the ladies' advice regarding storing Frozen Margaritas, Frozen Cosmos, and The BBQ Queens' Royal Slush in the freezer. The instructions tell you to thaw them until slushy before serving. Unless Karen and Judith have a sub-sub-zero freezer, these drinks, given their alcohol content, should be pretty much slushy when you take them out. Alcohol simply does not freeze in the home refrigerator freezer. With that said, don't miss this cookbook, it will set your mind for barbecuing all summer long! ... Read more

Product Description

Racism and the Image of God proposes a new direction in Christian thinking about the body. Western Christianity has traditionally taught that the soul or mind best represents God’s image in humans; in the United States bodily differences, especially those often labeled “racial,” have been used to justify hierarchies of worth. This book argues that bodies deserve respect as part of the image of God. From her perspective as a white feminist theologian, Karen Teel dialogues with five womanist thinkers to develop a Christian theology of the body that can compel Christians, especially U. S. Christians of European descent, to actively resist the sin of racism.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buying Freedom?
Equiano is a black boy who has a sister but in the beginning of this story he is separated form her by slave owners. He and his sister would never be able to see each other. Equiano has a hard life while being a slave. His owners are always traveling on ships. Some of his owners were good to him and some owners were bad. Later on in the story he incidentally runs into his sister and the slave owners let them spend the night with each other. But, in the morning when he got up she was gone. He went on as a hard working slave being sold all the time but, one day he decided to start selling things for his freedom. When he would make 40 pounds he would be given his freedom. He also wanted to go back home to England. I did like this book but not as much as other ones I have read. One reason I like this book is because it didn't go on and on about things like special events that happened. It got straight to the point. The second reason is because it was full of information like how it really was back then. One reason I didn't like this book was because most of the time I didn't really want to read it. That is my opinion of the book The Slave Who Bought His Freedom.

Charting the vicissitudes of her own life, and the travails and triumphs of the lives of those whom she knows and loves, Harryman's poems travel great distances, both internally and geographically, from the Kentucky of her youth to the California of her present moment (with a detour in Europe). In this movement we encounter moments of wisdom and insight, the small epiphanies derived from love and loss, grief and celebration, dreams and nightmares, curses and blessings . . . from gratitude and despair. Auto Mechanic's Daughter is a lyrical journey into life's private places and the small joys encountered there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reflecting the author's own trials and challenges
Auto Mechanic's Daughter is an anthology of free-verse poetry by published poet Karen Harryman, whose work has appeared in "Alaska Quarterly Review", "Los Angeles Review", "Poetry New Zealand", and "Cortland Review", among other places. Reflecting the author's own trials and challenges, the poems speak of growing up in Kentucky, moving to California, and the culture shock that accompanies setting out to make a bold change in one's life. An open, heartfelt, and unforgettable glimpse into the hardships and rewards of surviving transition. "At Least": In May and June / there are the jacarandas' / purple blossoms fallen / on green lawns of every block // reminding me of home / how bluegrass isn't blue / until it gives up that flower / until it goes to seed.

Well, a non-poetry guy just loved this book of poetry.I'm genuinely surprised at how many emotions I felt as I read Karen Harryman's poems... and really amazed at how powerful some of them felt, considering how few words she sometimes chose to use. Some of my favorites were "Washing Dishes"... "Anniversary"... "The Truth"... "White Trash Blessing"... and of course, the "Auto Mechanic's Daughter".Many of them have the feeling that they were written by someone who has walked through several different lifetimes, all in the same pair of very worn shoes... especially "White Trash Blessing".I should say here that I'm the kind of guy who thought poetry had to rhyme and usually end in some sort of filthy but funny joke, so I can't emphasize enough how much I enjoyed reading this book... and how much the poems truly touched me... and how I now wished I had parceled out the poems over the course of a month, reading one a night, instead of having read them all in one sitting.I will be sure to not make that mistake on Karen Harryman's next book. ... Product Description
The Black Sea region rarely hits the media headlines until the outbreak of war in Georgia in 2008, yet its importance as a focus of European Union (EU) external policy making had already been growing for several years. The area is fascinating and diverse, comprising both large and small states, with a mixture of democracies and more authoritarian regimes. Traditionally a central foreign policy concern for Russia and Turkey, since the end of the Cold War, the EU and the US have become increasingly involved in the many dimensions of Black Sea politics. This book brings together a broad range of specialists on the region to analyze the challenge of divergent agendas both within and outside the EU. More specifically it looks at how the EU's enlargement to include states on the Black Sea shore has brought about new external policies including the European Neighbourhood Policy, Black Sea Synergy and the Eastern Partnership, all representing subtly different aims and interests. The various sections in the book also examine regionalization, conflict resolution, security, relationships between the Black Sea's states and last but not least, the vital issue of energy which has begun to dominate the discussion of the region. Designed to further the debate on the future of EU policies for the Black Sea region, this book is an essential resource for students and researchers in search for a coherent picture of the inter-relationship of EU initiatives and policies in the region. ... The Marquesses' baptism as Mormons added another important dimension to Effie's life. Her account of turn-of-the-century Mormon missionaries adds to the record of Latter-day Saint attempts to establish a presence in the South. But it is the articulate, observant, vernacular voice of a turn-of-the-century woman from rural Kentucky that is most evident in her narrative."--BOOK JACKET. ... Read more

Effie Marquess Carmack (1885-1973) grew up in the tobacco-growing region of southern Kentucky known as the Black Patch. She married at an early age and, because of economic necessity and religious commitments, moved withher husband to Utah, back to Kentucky, then to Arizona, and finally toCalifornia. Along the way she became committed to preserving the rural, southern folkways she had experienced as a child. She became a folk poetand self-taught artist. In the 1940s she began writing her autobiography.Effie's story is a charming memoir of her spirited childhood on a poortobacco farm. 4-0 out of 5 stars I Heart Suckers
Now I have to say, while Koehler's characters are complex and at times harsh, they are easy to associate with. Now that I've read a few of her books, I think it's safe to say her female characters are always broken women who carry their scars with both pride and shame; shame that they survived, but proud that they can still put one foot in front of the other. Shying away from the trend of gross exaggeration, her female leads are audacious, blunt, and kick ass, but always within the realm of possibility. Nor are they all beautiful, sex kittens. These women are just like the rest of us...wonderful in our own little way. Her male leads are just as diverse and distinguished, but it's her females that shine.

Casually paced, the speed of the book is where my issues lie. Were it not for the interesting characters, my attention would've slowly dwindled after reading a third of the book. While there is a lot of action, it's a little over-described and draws out longer than necessary. The same can be said for the atmosphere. Don't get me wrong, Koehler can set up a Goth scene like no other, but far too often she revels in it a little too much for my taste. I'm all about it was a dark and stormy night, but have to draw the line when said night is described in four paragraphs when it could've been established in one. The issues working against the other, neither helps the book nor does it set the mood the way she intended it.

With all that said, Koehler's style of writing is tight and concise, just not when she's having a good time. The dialog is modern without being clichéd and her descriptions are strong, without smacking you across the face. Written in the third person, the narration is sharp and intense. You will feel what the characters feel, see what they see, and understand what's going on throughout the story. Now that's what I'm talking about!!

Original in the genre, but patterned within the world Ms. Koehler's created, the story is fascinating. Now, maybe I've just been spoiled, but this tale is more serious than The Blackburn & Scarletti Mysteries. I expected the same kind of humor I found in the last one, but it was not to be. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, just that this tale is more severe and a lot less breezy.Maybe it's because the character, Alek, is more introspective and melancholic. Or maybe it's because the trials he must go through aren't a laughing matter. Either way, prepare yourselves for a dive into deep waters.

4-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this one more than the first!
Slayer Black Miracles is an excellent collection of two novellas featuring the Slayer, or rather THE Slayer Alek Knight. Both novellas were well written and took the characters and macro story arc into more detailed chapters.

I think the storyline is original and interesting, the vampire mythology that Koehler weaves is dark and lonely as per usual vamp stories but at the same time, the involvement of the Vatican and the competing worlds of vampires and Slayers, Coven and Hive is unique.

Dragon's Blood brings Alek's blood mate and twin Debra back into the story as he fights to protect a human woman and her son from the Yakuza. The novella has some interesting twists and a few new vampires to keep it moving.Nice chemistry between Alek and Robyn as well as an interesting glimpse into the relationship between Alek as a rogue and other master vampires.

Immortal introduces another dhampir, Phoenix into Alek's life. She is attacked by a serial killer and he takes her into his life and the former covenhouse to train her as he was trained by Amadeus.Again, Alek finds himself wanting a connection and finding one that is illusive.

My only complaint is that this book was simply one of the worst edited pieces I've ever read.Even a few simple reads of a manuscript should have taken care of at least 60% of the atrocious syntax and spelling errors. It became distracting and then annoying by the end of Immortal and I hope that in the future, Koehler can at least have someone read the manuscript a few times before it hits the printer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Slayer Is Back!
And thank the Dark Gods & Goddesses for Karen Koehler's vivid,
razor-sharp Gothic Punk writing style! Mix THE CROW with BLADE,
add a dash of BUFFY, shake well, and get Alex Knight, The Slayer!
I read this novel(as well as Koehler's SLAYER and SCARABUS) and
visualized it as a Dark Anime film. Reading Koehler is like
reading a White Wolf novel, but with one important difference--
she packs more action, sex and violence into 10 pages than
White Wolf authors do in 300!AND her characters are totally
believable. This s the dawn of something great--we've had Anne
Rice, we've danced beneath the dark moon with Poppy Z. Brite,
and now we're stalking the night with Karen Koehler, the NEW
Queen of the Vampyre tale!

5-0 out of 5 stars About a half-breed supernatural and vampire hunter
Slayer: Black Miracles collects two horror novellas by Karen Koehler under one cover and features the adventures of a half-breed supernatural and vampire hunter named Alek Knight. "Slayer: Dragon's Blood" resumes Alek's journey two years after destroying the Coven, when he learns of a new, soul-destroying evil that only his immortal blade can oppose. "Slayer: Immortal" is the fascinating saga of the Slayer's encounter with a lost immortal and predatory Phoenix, as ruthless as she is deathless. Slayer: Black Miracles is an engaging, action-packed double horror and fantasy read. Also very highly recommended is the first of the Alek Knight dark fantasy vampire adventures, Slayer (0967922003, $...) and Karen Koehler's Scarabus (096792202X, $...), the story of a three thousand year old demon who wages war on the cult of mad zealots who created him.

1-0 out of 5 stars More mediocrity
If you've been unfortunate enough to have waded through one of Ms. Koehler's earlier pseudogothic pot-boilers, you can spare yourself the time required to trudge through the predicatable and poorly-crafted "horrors" of SLAYER. There's nothing here that hasn't been done before and done better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I have now lived in this happy place a whole year
I love this book of "The Adventures of Black Beauty: Black Beauty finds a home" and it's about when Black Beauty relates his experiences with a cruel owner followed by his sale to three ladies and his subsequent reunion with his stable boy Joe Green of ten years earlier from Squire Gordon's stables.

This is a great book and all of my favorites.

On page 29, Joe Green's hands are touching the horse's face because he realizes that he once had cared for a horse who had a white star on the forehead and one white foot. Then he knows it's Black Beauty.

I have a little something to say a little something to match that book.

My Last Home

Two sisters who owned the nearby manor house
came to see me. They were the Miss Bloomfields,
and they wanted a horse. They were not sure about me,
especially when they saw the scars on my knees, but they
decided to give me a trial.
The next morning, the second sister spoke and
told Mr. Thoroughgood to let their coachman to have a look
at him first. Then Mr. Thoroughgood said, "Of course, Willie,
you must now run to the stables and fetch the coachman because
there's a good lad." Willie ran off, and returned a few minutes
later with a handsome young man. So when the coachman saw
that horse he carefully looked me over. "Why I one knew a horse
with those white markings. Can it be! I know this horse! He is really Black Beauty!" The other looked surprised. "Black Beauty?" Mr. Thoroughgood asked. Then he threw his right arm around my neck because he was so happy to see me again and my new groom was Joe Green, John Manly's young assistant!
Then Joe told the Miss Bloomfield's all about me. As they knew
Mrs. Gordon, they were delighted and promised that I would never,
ever be sold again.
So my troubles are all over, and I am at home.
Often, before I am quite awake, I fancy and dream I am still in Squire Gordon's orchard at Birtwick, standing with my old friends under the apple trees.

"You're Black Beauty! I almost killed you when you were at Squire Gordon's" said Joe Green, my new groom and...

I have a little something to go with this as well and it would go:

They were delighted to find me a home with three country ladies. Their coachman was even more delighted when he spotted that little sprig of white hairs on my back and recognised me as Black Beauty. The coachman was Joe Green. I wouldn't have recognised little Joe. He was a grown man and had become the best and kindest of coachmen. The work here is pleasant and young Willie and my old friend Joe had mad the ladies promise I'll never be sold. My troubles seem over and I feel really at home -- as much at home as in those far gone days when I stood talking to my friends beneath the apple trees at Birtwick Park.

This is one of the greatest and bestest books ever and that book puts me in mind of the 1986 National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada when Chris Lybbert was the 1986 world champion calf roper.

Well, I loved and enjoyed this book.

I really liked Joe Green because he is the best stableboy ever.

I loved it, enjoyed and liked it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... Read more
